Joel and Ethan Coen's screwball comedy Intolerable Cruelty, the first film they have ever made that did not originate with them, comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and does a fabulous job of capturing the film's bright color scheme. English, French, and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, and a second English soundtrack is accessible in DTS 5.1. French and Spanish subtitles are accessible, and English captions are optional. Supplemental materials include a humorous blooper reel personally approved by Joel Coen, a ten minute making-of featurette containing interview clips with the brothers as well as stars George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and a featurette concerning the work that went into the film's excellent costume design. This is a solid release from Universal.

Fantastic Comedy

Some claim that Intolerable Cruelty is not one of the Coen Brothers' better films, however I disagree. Though more polished and upbeat than films like Fargo or Millers Crossing, it still provides and unique and hilarious look into the bitter world of divorce. George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones have great chemistry as smart, driven individuals playing each other in a mutual game of cat and mouse. The witty dialogue is as good as it gets; paired with strong performances from supporting cast, this movie deserves a spot in any collection.
What's great about it: Coen Brothers never fail to entertain
What's not so great: I liked it all

Gus Van Sant's Oscar-winning psychological drama Good Will Hunting gets the deluxe treatment from Disney/Buena Vista. The disc offers a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by the director as well as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, 11 deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, television promotional spots, a montage of images from Oscar night (the film captured Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor), and a music video. This is the definitive home video release of this well-regarded film.

With outstanding performances from Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Minnie Driver, and even an acceptable job by Ben Affleck, this is a movie well worth watching several times. The story is touching, the writing is clever; this movie makes it cool to be smart again.

Not Great

West Wing began its life as a positive witty show that gave a fascinating and scintillating look into Washington politics. However, in this final season, it becomes consumed with darker drama focus primarily on the barely interesting presidential election. As characters turn on each other, the camaraderie that once was so endearing is now gone. This show is only valuable for its look into election year politics.
What's great about it: Informative, Alan Alda
What's not so great: Dreary

Deteriorating

In season six, West Wing becomes a very dark show. The writing is much less witty, and simply begins to document the Bartlet administration's problems as it tries to deal with one crisis after another. New cast members have little chemistry with the original crew.
What's great about it: Original Cast Members
What's not so great: Not Funny, More Drama, New Cast Members

The Last Season
on October 26, 2008

The fifth season of the West Wing is the last one worth watching. In this season, as it begins to become much darker; with less humor and more tension and drama. New cast members such as Will add little to the show, possibly detracting from it. With a few episodes still memorable, I would advise watching this season, but it'll never move you like those first few seasons did.
What's great about it: Original Cast Members, A Few Powerful Episodes
What's not so great: New Cast, Darker Plot, Not as Funny

Great Show Continues

In this season, the first few pebbles begin to slide in the avalanche of writing that destroys the later seasons. However, this season is still certainly worth getting. It sees the tragic loss of a major character and the even more unfortunate addition of Will Baily. Bartlet will continue to deal with his MS and the fallout from assassinating Sharif, but in the finale, he will face a crisis much greater than he has ever faced before.
What's great about it: Writing continues to be good
What's not so great: Will Baily

The third season of the Emmy-winning drama The West Wing started with a special episode that addressed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, titled "Isaac and Ishmael." This set contains that program as well as every other episode from the third season. Major storylines during the course of the year included the ongoing political fallout from President Bartlett hiding his health issues from the American public, and a series of international incidents that series creator Aaron Sorkin created in order to comment on the volatile real-life situations transpiring at the time.

The show continues its winning formula of wit and intelligence with the third season. It provides a look into the beginning of Bartlet's run, and Bartlet must struggle with serious moral issues in regards to terrorists. If you are a fan of this show, rest assured, this season will not disappoint.
What's great about it: Good Writing, Plot still fresh,
What's not so great: Nothing

All 22 episodes from the second season of the Emmy-winning drama The West Wing are collected on this four-disc set. Each episode is presented in its original broadcast aspect ratio. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include commentary tracks from various cast and crew members on four of the episodes, a documentary about the cast members attending the annual correspondent's diner, a pair of featurettes, and a blooper reel. This is a solid release that maintains the quality established by the first-season set released the year before.

A Surprisingly Good Movie

This movie features some pretty funny rivalry between Pierce Brosnan and Woody Harrelson. It's even got some half decent plot twists.
What's great about it: Woody Harrelson, Funny
What's not so great: A bit contrived at points
