Supurb Batman Movie
on November 13, 2008
Posted by: 71Percent
Taking a very dark approach to movie, Batman Begins easily outstrips its predecessors in quality. Christian Bale excels as both Bruce Wayne and Batman, but it is his supporting actors that really make this film great. Morgan Freeman and Michael Kaine are masters of their craft and they do not disappoint.
What's great about it: Acting, Action, Approach
What's not so great: very little

Dreamworks continues to produce fine DVDs, with this one being no exception. The image, framed at 1.85:1 and anamorphic (of course, a full-frame version is available separately) is a wonderful translation from the theaters. Colors are warm and detail is exact. The transfer looks a bit soft at times, but it's far from a distraction and seems suited to the light nature of the film. As for sound, both 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS tracks are offered. Each is a fine compliment to the visuals, and each especially highlights John Williams' breezy jazz score. The surrounds aren't used to any great degree, but overall these tracks are top-quality all the way. Certainly nothing less would be expected. While the first disc is devoid of supplemental material (sorry, don't expect the first Spielberg commentary), the second disc in this set has a number of interesting tidbits, though they do look like more as a whole than the individual parts. Laurent Bouzereau, a frequent documentarian for Spielberg's films, has put together an 80-minute documentary which is broken up into a number of separate pieces, so it can't be played through in it's entirety. Still, each segment is quite nice. The first, "Behind the Camera" is just that: a 17-minute featurette on making the film. Next, at around 30 minutes, is "Cast Me if You Can," a look at the main players. Shorter (six minutes), is "Scoring Catch Me if You Can," which obviously discusses John Williams' work on this film. "Frank Abagnale: Between Reality and Fiction" is a multi-part segment as Abagnale further discusses his incredible story. Finally, "The FBI Perspective" briefly looks at the realist nature of the FBI as portrayed in this film and "In Closing" (four minutes) sums up the experience from the main cast and crew. As a whole, these featurettes make a fine documentary, but it all seems a bit light for such a high-profile film. On the other hand, the film itself is rather lightweight, so maybe it's the perfect accompaniment. Beyond this is an archive section with numerous photos, cast and crew biographies, and production notes, much of which was covered in the documentary. Spielberg has repeatedly called this his "bonbon of a movie." It's a very enjoyable, but insubstantial film, and in many ways, this disc echoes that sentiment.

A pretty good movie with decent performances from both DiCaprio and Hanks. The movie has a sense of humor and makes you sympathize with both sides of the chase.
What's great about it: Decent Acting, Pretty Funny

This is an excellent controller. As far as performance, its no different from the basic white that comes included with the system. I am a fan of the wireless to keep the mess to a minimum, also my dog won't eat or get tangled in the cords.
What's great about it: Not to heavy, but solid, responsive
What's not so great: i've had no problems

The vengeful Bride returns to cross a few more names off of her rapidly shortening list in Miramax Home Entertainment's release of Kill Bill Vol. 2, and though it feels like only a precursor to the inevitable feature-packed release that will follow soon after, this release does offer a few choice gems in addition to a solid presentation of the feature attraction. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image offers even skin tones, solid blacks, and vivid colors. Though the occasional intrusion of edge-enhancement may prove somewhat distracting to some viewers, the overall commendable visual presentation is generally solid. Audiophiles will be happy to note the inclusion of both an English-language Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 track, both of which are accompanied by closed captioning and provide a rich, full-bodied listening experience without any notable distortion or hiss. In addition to an alternate French-language audio track, Miramax has also seen fit to include optional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish subtitles. Of course, fans of both Kill Bill films are no doubt aware of Miramax's plans to release them at first separately and then with a super deluxe combo package following at some point in the near future, and though the extra materials provided on this disc are indeed satisfying, they do seem more like an appetizer than a hearty meal. A three-and-a-half-minute deleted scene in which Bill faces off against a vengeful gang of thugs whose boss he previously killed finds Tarantino's Shaw Brothers fanaticism in full effect. A 25-minute behind-the-scenes segment offers interviews with Tarantino, Uma Thurman, Daryl Hannah, and David Carradine in which they discuss the appeal of the characters and the manner in which Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2 compliment one another. Though those looking for in-depth details regarding the production may walk away with a slight pang of disappointment, viewers simply looking for a little fun will surely enjoy the featurette. Rounding things out is a solid performance by Chingon at the Kill Bill Vol. 2 premiere, in which the band (featuring director Robert Rodriguez on guitar) strums one of the tunes from the film's soundtrack.

If you liked Kill Bill Vol 1, you will likely enjoy Vol 2. The same artistic touch and style of music is present. Like the first, not good for kids.
What's great about it: Same good acting, Artistic touch

The first installment of Pulp Fiction director Quentin Tarantino's hyper-violent revenge epic makes its DVD debut courtesy of Miramax Home Entertainment. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image sports even skin tones and bright, vivid colors, offset by deep, solid blacks. Some unfortunate evidence of moderate edge-enhancement seems to be the only drawback to an otherwise near-flawless visual treatment. Sound is presented in English Dolby Digital 5.1, English DTS, and an alternate French-language track, with optional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish subtitles. It is in regards to sound that this disc truly excels, with Tarantino's exhausting, eclectic soundtrack offering an ideal auditory backdrop to the onscreen mayhem. Limbs are detached and swords clash with resounding fury and clarity, while the roar of motorcycle engines and airplanes push the low-frequency capabilities of one's home-theater system. As The Bride makes her final decent into the House of Blue Leaves, it's hard for viewers not to be seduced by the slick sound editing and driving score that accompanies the eye-popping battle. If there's one aspect of the disc that disappoints, it has to be the lack of extra features. Though the promise of a massive special edition DVD release when Kill Bill Vol. 2 hits the home-video market looms on the horizon before the concluding chapter has even hit theaters, it's hard not to feel slighted with the sparse offerings here. Despite the offering of the occasional interesting tidbit, "The Making of Kill Bill Vol. 1," when all is said and done, is little more than a cog in the ever-present hype machine -- an extended, 20-minute commercial for the film that is similar to the brief previews shown in-between movies on pay cable. A pair of bonus songs by infectious House of Blue Leaves rockers the 5.6.7.8's at least entertains, though it's all-too-brief, and aside from the intriguing "Bootleg Trailer" for the film (also included on the soundtrack CD), the trailers offered here are nothing that Tarantino fans haven't already seen a million times before.

Great Movie

Tarantino's Kill Bill can be excessively violent at times, and I would not recommend it for children. Ruthless retribution lies at the heart of this movie, but with Tarantino's keen eye for the artistic and catchy soundtrack, it turns out revenge can be quite entertaining.
What's great about it: Artistic, Good Acting
What's not so great: Excessive Violence

An action packed adventure series that never takes itself too seriously, The Mummy, the Mummy Return and the Scorpion King will keep you interested and laughing for hours. The acting is perfectly over-the-top for what the movies intend, especially in The Mummy.
What's great about it: Acting, Action, Humor
What's not so great: Special effects sometimes lacking

Solid Spy Movie
on November 5, 2008

This movie is actually a fairly decent spy movie compared to its later sequels. With from dark allies to CIA headquarters, quiet paranoia to helicopter explosions, this movie has something for everyone while maintaining originality. Its not an amazing movie, but its pretty solid and deserves a spot in all but the most discerning collections.
What's great about it: Interesting Plot
What's not so great: Mediocre Acting

Mel Gibson's lush, savage Revolutionary War epic is given the royal treatment in this DVD from Columbia-TriStar. The film is shown in an anamorphic widescreen presentation, which preserves the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. In addition, the digital mastering makes for a clearer picture with crisp, vibrant colors. The sound is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, so viewers won't miss one thundering musket or crunching cannonball. As for extras, The Patriot does not disappoint. Director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin offer a feature-length commentary that offers some good insights into the making of the picture. The commentary at times seems to be improvised, however, occasionally leading to some distracting asides and in-jokes. The Patriot also offers a host of deleted scenes, which feature an optional commentary and serve to expand some of the film's subplots and characters. Viewers are also treated to three behind-the-scenes featurettes. The first of these offers a tutorial on the creation of the film's gorier special effects, while the other two provide an interesting look at the filmmaker's painstaking efforts to bring American history to life. For fans of the film, this is a must-own. For the uninitiated, it offers an excellent chance to experience The Patriot.

Decent War Movie
on November 4, 2008

In The Patriot, Mel Gibson does a decent job of playing both father and warrior. Heath Ledger prefers to play an unremarkable love-sick teenager rather than actually contribute to the movie, but he doesn't detract from it either. The action is solid, and provides an interesting look into warfare at the time.
What's great about it: Revolution, Decent Acting
What's not so great: Heath Ledger, A bit unrealistic

Duwayne Dunham's live action animal movie Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer. English, French, and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are neither subtitles nor closed-captions on this release. Supplemental materials include the theatrical trailer. This is a by-the-numbers release from Disney/Buena Vista.
