This is so amazing. Imagine James Dean as a Japanese hit man with more women and no care in the world. This is the coolest film I can think of. Classic world cinema right here.
The widescreen Mystery Train DVD offers very little in the special features department. Aside from a picture disc and 24 optional scene selections, there isn't much to it. Most of the items that would normally appear on the DVD are included in a "Collectible Behind-the-Scenes" booklet. The back page offers a list of scene selections while the center spread has a cast list, film trivia, and a few short paragraphs about director Jim Jarmusch's vision for the movie. The DVD features Dolby Digital Stereo Surround Sound and offers French and English subtitles.

JIM JARMUSCH'S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT

A very enjoyable film for anyone interested in Elvis or deadpan humor. I love Jim Jarmusch, if you loved any of the following films check this out: Down By Law, Stranger Than Paradise, Dead Man, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, or Broken Flowers (not my favorite).
What's great about it: The first story is one of my favorite film history contributions of the 80's
What's not so great: A tad bit slow, the other two stories are a little boring
Jim Jarmusch's landmark independent film Down By Law comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.78:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include reflections from Jarmusch, an interview with cinematographer Robby Muller, footage from a 1986 Cannes Film Festival press conference with the director and his three lead performers, the original theatrical trailer, and other extras. This is a superb release from Criterion, showing once again why they are one of the most respected names in home video.

CLASSIC JARMUSCH

I am a huge Jim Jarmusch fan. This is another must have for any fan of Jarmusch or Modern classic New Wave films and or deadpan humor. The characters are great.
Emulated but never equaled is Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1954 suspense-filled Diabolique. Criterion has done a decent job on this 1.33:1 full frame transfer (the film's original aspect ratio). Shot in black-and-white and culled from an original 35 mm fine grain composite master, the image looks very bright and dark with only a few instances of grain, dirt, or scratches showing up in the picture. The audio is presented in Dolby Mono in French. This soundtrack lacks any true surround sounds, though on the plus side the bulk of the dialogue, effects, and music are all clear of any nasty distortion or hiss. No alternate audio tracks are included, though there are some English titles for the majority of Americans that don't speak a lick of French. Sadly, there isn't one single extra feature to be found on this disc. Maybe someday this classic thriller will see a better DVD edition; until then viewers will have to be content with this bare-bones Criterion disc.

FOREIGN CLASSIC MASTERPIECE

Henri-Georges Clouzot is a classic Cinema master. This paved the way for future thrillers. An ending that still haunts. Criterion Collection does a great job on the transfer.
What's great about it: It's time very original
What's not so great: A plot that has been robbed for many modern thrillers
George Stevens' classic American Western Shane comes to DVD with a standard full-frame 1.33:1 (as should any film produced before 1955). A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track by the director's son, who was a production assistant on the film, and a theatrical trailer. This package will please all those who have fond memories of this film, while offering a great way to introduce Shane to a new generation.

WESTERN AT IT'S BEST

Such a beautiful film. It makes me feel loved when I watch it. Another film I could watch over and over again and still want to watch it again. Please see this movie if you haven't.
What's great about it: At $6.99 this film should be in everyone's collection, I paid near $20 two years ago for it.
Samuel Fuller's brilliant and audacious drama about a reporter who discovers the madness of the world reflected in the patients of a mental hospital has been given a simple, but effective, treatment in this Criterion Collection release. Shock Corridor has been given a letterboxed transfer in its original widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono. The dialogue is in English, with no multiple-language options included. As a bonus, this DVD features the film's original theatrical trailer as well as the color sequences featured in the picture's initial release.

Almost as good as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in regards to similar content. I adore this film simply because it has a feel that relaxes as it drives you mad.
Peter Bogdanovich's award-winning Paper Moon comes to DVD with a fabulous widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Laszlo Kovacs' gorgeous black-and-white photography is presented beautifully. The film has never looked better on home video. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. There are neither subtitles nor closed captions on this release. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Bogdanovich. He discusses the making of the film, the allusions to other films he was making throughout the movie, and he explains in layman's terms how the exquisite look of the film was achieved. Three featurettes offer much of the same information as the commentary track, but the deleted scenes that appear during those featurettes are very entertaining. Considering the inexpensive list price of the disc, this Paramount offering is a true value.

SOOOOO GOOOOOD!!!!

Another film that I can't get enough of, it has everything you could ever hope for: comedy, drama, and enough memorable lines and scenes to have you reciting for months.
In the rush to flood the DVD market with titles, Paramount Pictures released several of their classic older films with very little fanfare and very few extras. Unfortunately, the Harold and Maude DVD is one of them, with no extras save for two theatrical trailers and a grainy, scratchy widescreen transfer. Though the disc is released in Dolby Digital 5:1 Surround, there is no isolated track for songwriter Cat Stevens' brilliant music. Even the setup options offer only English subtitles for the hard of hearing. This Harold and Maude DVD is merely for those fans who simply must own a widescreen copy of the film. Other moviegoers would be satisfied watching this classic film on video or cable.

Incredibly Dark and Morbidly Beautiful

I love this movie. The suicide gags for attention are so good, a remodeled car that is now a hearse and the replanting of the tree, this is a comedy that will live on forever.
I could go on and on about this film. I can watch this film a million times and still love it just as much. Everyone should be required to see this. I can't wait for this to come out on Blu-ray. I hope they make it look pristine, if ever a film deserved the love and care that goes into the Blu-ray transfers of Warner Brothers, this is it. BUY IT. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY COPIES OF THIS FILM!!!
What's great about it: Everything, it is a perfect film, to think they might have filmed it in black in white is tragic.
Anthony Quinn's con brio performance as a life-loving Greek laborer drew appreciative audiences to this classic drama, which has been given a loving presentation on DVD for this release. Zorba the Greek has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which is also enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The original English-language audio is presented in both a new Dolby Digital Stereo mix and the original single-channel version in Dolby Digital Mono; alternate dubbed Spanish and French tracks appear in Dolby Digital Mono, and optional subtitles in English and Spanish are included. Among the bonus materials are a commentary track from director Michael Cacoyannis, a biographical documentary on Anthony Quinn, an alternate opening sequence, a gallery of production stills, and more.

There is something about this film that makes me feel warm inside. It has been awhile since I've seen it, but the two times I watched it, I loved it. Anthony Quinn is terrific.
