Amazing

This film could rightfully be considered Scorsese's opus. Not since Goodfellas has the director made a movie this compelling; this is quite simply storytelling at it's best. Do not miss out on this masterpiece!

A classic piece of animation history
on July 25, 2008

Dumbo is one of many important landmarks of Disney's history, and anyone interested in animation should not miss this. Featuring an all-star cast of Disney's top golden age animators, as well as a great story and many very memorable moments, this is another piece of history that belongs in any comprehensive film collection. The only knock against this disc is the 3D menu, which is absolutely hideous.
What's great about it: Superb animation and storytelling

There was a magical time in music known as the 1980s. It was an era when big hair, tight clothes, new attitudes and killer tracks set the world on fire. Now you have the chance to revisit these legendary days and become an 80's rock superstar just like the greats of the past. Your spandex is tight, your hair is sprayed right — rip off killer licks and jam with all of your might.Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s is loaded with amazing songs from the 1980s that appeal to head-bangers, new-wave rockers and anyone else who loves those wild tunes. Play as your favorite Guitar Hero characters and dress them in outrageous outfits of the past. The co-op multiplayer capabilities allow two players to jam together, with one person on lead and the other on rhythm guitar. If you need to master a particular song or phrase, turn to the Practice mode and even slow down a difficult section until you learn it perfectly. Are you really an 80's bad boy — or bad girl — at heart? Then it's time to hit the stage and take your place in the pantheon of rock legends.

Good, but not great

GH Encore: Rocks the 80's is really more of a stand alone expansion then a full game. You will find several great songs from the 80's, as well as some you probably won't come back to play much. It is awesome to be able to play songs like Holy Diver and I Ran (with the volume cranked up to 11 of course), but it's perhaps when you are playing the songs that you really enjoy that you will be made most aware of one of GH: 80's most severe flaws: the songs just aren't much fun to play. Sure, the music is fine, but the note arrangements just aren't very enjoyable, which really takes a bite out of the game play. Still, that said, it does of course still have the solid GH fundamentals. It's not a bad game by any means, just the weakest link in an otherwise strong line of games.
What's great about it: Some sweet 80's tunes
What's not so great: Watered down presentation, minimal content

Those who may have missed director Sylvain Chomet's charming Oscar-nominated animated feature The Triplets of Belleville during its all-too-brief and limited theatrical run can now witness the inventive feature thanks to this release from Columbia/TriStar Home Entertainment. Presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image is spotless in addition to offering a great presentation of the film's varying color scheme. The only true argument that could be made against the transfer is the ugly intrusion of edge-enhancement. Though viewers with standard televisions won't notice the tell-tale glowing edges that, in addition to being entirely unnecessary, are impossible to ignore after one becomes aware of them, viewers with large, high-definition, anamorphic-friendly televisions will, no doubt, find this distracting. Audio is offered in a choice of English or Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, offering a clean reproduction of the wonderful sound scheme and a great vehicle for the infectious music featured in the film. Though played down somewhat on the packaging, the extra features provided on this release offer some great insight into the film's production. Commentaries are separated into three scene-specific segments: "Opening Sequence," "Restaurant Performance," and "Tuning the Wheel." Viewers are treated to a perfect mixture of technical and fun facts -- with the final segment offering a great showcase for the film's remarkable foley work. A featurette entitled "The Cartoon According to Sylvain Chomet" is a nice (albeit somewhat brief) learning tool for aspiring animators, and an appropriately surreal music video for "Bellville Rendez-Vous" will have Chomet and songwriter Benoît Charest's earworm title tune echoing in viewers' heads for days. A fun theatrical trailer rounds out the features nicely.

2D animation is alive and well

Chomet's animated feature is a masterpiece, hands down. While 2d animation withers away in the US, we are shown by this extraordinary French team that there is still so much life and relevance in the medium. No need to go into the story details here; rest assured that you will be transfixed with this film's strange tale. The feel of this movie is a special one indeed, magical and mysterious, wonderful and bizarre, with each beautiful hand drawn frame breathing with life and character. Excellent designs and incredibly imaginative visuals abound; you will be missing out if you don't see this movie.
What's great about it: Superb storytelling and art direction

For the fans...

The 3rd proper entry in the Guitar Hero franchise (Rocks the 80's doesn't count), GH3 is a game for the fans. The track list is the best yet, and includes a lot of master tracks. The venues are more interesting then ever, though the game’s flow has not changed much, as the career still unfolds in the usual way. However, you will now encounter “Boss Battles” against guitar virtuosos such as Slash, but unfortunately these aren’t much fun. As I said though, the core game is pretty much unchanged from previous entries in the series, so you can still expect a solid, fun game. The new wireless Les Paul controller made for this game is excellent, with a nice strum bar and solid feeling buttons. The main thing I would lodge against GH3 is the extreme nature of the game’s difficulty. Most any practiced player will be able to glide through on the Medium setting, but Expert, and even just the Hard settings are so difficult that only hardcore players will have the patience to get through them. At least now Hammer ons/offs are much easier to do now, and the notes that can be performed with this technique are even highlighted, but despite this, many of GH3’s complicated, dissonant riffs will crush all but the most dedicated players. Still, in the end, GH3 is a great game, and if you like GH, it’s still a no-brainer to pick this one up.
What's great about it: Best GH soundtrack yet
What's not so great: Difficulty will frustrate most players

Jacob's Ladder was released on DVD by Artisan in 1998 as a "special edition." The anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen transfer still shows some age and the Dolby Digital soundtrack is adequate, but Jacob's Ladder is not about state-of-the-art picture and sound; it is about the story. The commentary focuses on the small touches and changes that Adrian Lyne's involvement brought to the film. It's not bad as director commentaries go, but Artisan unfortunately did not consider including writer Bruce Joel Rubin on the track. Rubin comments plenty during the documentary, which seems like it was made at the time of the film, either for cable or a laserdisc release. The story behind Rubin's script is fascinating, the documentary thankfully focusing less on promoting the film and more on gaining a deeper understanding of it. The three deleted scenes are all valuable extensions of the story that were cut to streamline the narrative. They are presented with the choice of director commentary, but Lyne doesn't really go into specifics on the decision not to include them in the film. A trailer, a television spot, cast lists, and production information round things out. This isn't a flawless presentation of the film, but Artisan's commitment to "special edition" DVD makes the disc worthwhile.

Adrian Lyne's film is simply a must see. A masterpiece of storytelling, tense pacing, and shocking visuals. Being of a younger generation, I come in with the unique perspective of seeing this film after having already experiencing the stories that it has inspired. Coming back all this time later to see the source is interesting, and rather eye opening. As an avid gamer, let me just say this: if you are a fan of the Silent Hill games, you MUST see this movie, as it is the main source of inspiration for the Silent Hill series.
What's great about it: Engrossing story

Great Game

Traveler's Tales 3rd proper LSW game is Saga, and it is essentially just a compilation of the first 2 LSW games. This is not a bad thing though, particularly if you have not already played the first 2 games. Saga offers a lot of bang for your buck, and it will take a long time to get everything. The game has a fun co-op mode, which can even be played online, a step up from previous games. This is also a good game for kids and parents to play together, as kids may need help on some parts. That said, I am a mid 20's gamer myself, and still enjoyed the game thoroughly. Some of your enjoyment may be based on how much you like Star Wars/Legos (the game can have a nice nostalgia factor), though if you are even thinking about this game, you probably already like both.
What's great about it: Humor, nice presentation, lots of content
What's not so great: May be too easy for some peoples tastes
