John Rambo is back for the forth time on DVD with this Ultimate Edition of First Blood from Lion's Gate Home Entertainment. What's special about this release is not just the newly added audio commentary from Stallone himself; the disc's producer's have also finally unearthed the never-before-seen alternate suicide ending -- a virtual Holy Grail of film footage long talked about, but rarely seen. Add onto that an outtake and yet another bonus flashback featuring a steamy sex scene (yes, you heard it right), and suddenly this reissue becomes worth the buy. However packed those extras might be, though, that doesn't seem to be enough for the Ultimate Edition. In probably one of the most overblown bonuses since the Blair Witch 2's "The Secret of Esrever" DVD feature, First Blood and both of its sequels have been graced with a "Survival Mode" feature that is every bit as worthless as it sounds. Using branching technology, the disc's producers have outfitted the DVD to give the viewer access to special character information, map recreations, and some rather ridiculous animations that serve no purpose other than to just be "flashy." The fact that they have chosen a name like "Survival Mode" to represent all of these features is fitting, since watching the film like this really is like a game of endurance for people with very little time on their hands. Other than the uneven group of bonus features, the 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen picture looks stunning, with deep contrasts that enhance the gloom of the film, while the 5.1 Dolby Digital audio sports a exemplary mix that pulls you into the action yet still manages to handle the outdoor setting in a natural and absorbing way. As far as the commentary goes, Stallone delivers a fun track that borders on being a little too Inside the Actors Studio at times, but which is full of insight into the scripting and especially the casting (keep your ear open for the Kirk Douglas story). The alternate ending is faulted only because it lived on as a film legend for so long, which says nothing about its quality -- though it is actually quite short. When all is said and done, the disc is worth purchasing for first-time buyers of the series and for hardcore fans who salivate at the thought of the new extras. This DVD is also available in a three-disc Collector's Set of all three Ultimate Edition discs of this blockbuster series.

The first Rambo may actually be a surprise to many, it's more then just a bunch of mindless killing. It's still an action movie to be sure, but the story has a little more depth to it then you might expect. Worth checking out.

Strange in the best way

There is just something about this movie... It has a feel like no other. The sheer oddity, the characters and the surreal world they inhabit, this is pure entertainment. I don't know how many times I have watched this movie over the years, and I never get tired of it.

Although Joel and Ethan Coen's award-winning Fargo was available before on DVD, this special edition from MGM/UA is a vast improvement. Roger Deakins' simply astonishing cinematography is given first-rate treatment on this disc. The monochromatic look of the film, dominated by vast fields of white snow, brought the film many well-deserved accolades. Roger Deakins' commentary track goes into great detail about his artistic process, his working relationship with Joel and Ethan, and some fairly technical talk about how some of the shots in the film were achieved. Rounding out this entertaining disc are a short retrospective featurette consisting of the cast and crew sharing their memories of working on the film, a segment of The Charlie Rose Show with the brothers and lead actress Frances McDormand, an onscreen text trivia track that combines bizarre tangential trivia about events that transpire on the screen with more conventional production information, and a gallery of advertising materials. Ask a character in the film if this DVD is any good, and odds are they will respond, "Oh yeah, you betcha."

As you would expect from the Coen Bros., Fargo is great movie. There is really nothing bad I can say about it, I have watched this movie many times, and its great with every go. Perfect pacing, great performances, razor sharp writing... just excellent.

The Steven Seagal submarine actioner Submerged comes to DVD in a straightforward straight-to-DVD presentation from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. With an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen picture and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound, the movie has a vibrant look to it that benefits the various film stocks, while the sound is pumped out with explosive high-ends and balanced low-ends for the mostly hushed Seagal dialogue. Short on extras, the disc comes with a trailer gallery that highlights more of the action star's recent DVD films.

Hilarious!

Like Out for a Kill, Submerged is more fun then a barrel of monkeys, simply because it is so incredibly bad. The story is so nonsensical, it may hurt your brain if you actually try to understand what is happening. This is filled with ridiculous stereotypes, terrible editing, really weird sound design (there are parts where some random guy, who sounds nothing like Seagal, is doing Seagal's voice), and as I mentioned, an insane story that truly makes no sense. It's like 3-4 different movies smashed together; like the crew said "All right, we watched some 90's action movies, found some scenes we liked. Lets poorly ape them, and then edit everything together and call it a day!" This disaster is, like Out for a Kill, genuinely entertaining. If you like to watch movie making abominations unfold, this is a gem.
(Once again, the 5 stars is for entertainment value, on its own merits, the movie deserves like a -83)
What's great about it: Another shoddy Seagal movie full of laughs

Disney's ninth animated feature Fun and Fancy Free comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1. English, Spanish, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a behind-the-scenes featurette, a DVD storybook, and a trivia game. This is a solid release that should please any fan of classic Disney entertainment.

Classic, but not everyone will like it

Another step is Disney animation, Fun and Fancy Free is part of the phase where a full length feature was made by combining two shorter films. The first, Bongo, is about a circus bear escaping into the wild. It is a rather obscure footnote in the Disney studio's history; I cannot recall Bongo the bear being referenced much after this film. An interesting watch none the less, and great looking. The second part, a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk, is a bit more memorable. It is a well paced story, and has the excellent animation and beautiful background paintings typical of the time. If you are an animation buff, another can't miss.

The Steven Segal action thriller Out for a Kill skips a theatrical release to arrives straight to DVD from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment with a widescreen transfer. Presented with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound in English and Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo in French. Subtitles are available in English, French, Portugese, and Spanish. Bad, but in a good way

This movie really deserves one star, but I give it 5 because I have gotten more then my moneys worth from this straight-to-video gem. It is a tradition to watch this movie with my friends, because it is so terribly made it is a non-stop laugh riot. SERIOUSLY. This is better then 99% of the "intentional" comedies out there. The incoherent storytelling, the horrible cinematography, the late night TV quality FX, and the LEGENDARY editing. I DARE YOU TO MAKE SENSE WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS MOVIE!
I honestly recommend this, you WILL be entertained!

One of 2002's most highly acclaimed films, Minority Report, directed by Steven Spielberg, comes to DVD in a two-disc set. Everything is in the right place with this release, starting with the image. Framed at 2.39:1 and anamorphic (a severely cropped pan and scan version is available in a separate set), the washed-out, over-saturated visual style of director of photography Janusz Kaminski is produced with exacting measures. The intentional murkiness and overall cold color patterns are perfectly realized. There are plenty of signs of grain: just as it should be. Equally impressive are both the 5.1 English Dolby Digital and DTS tracks. Each is forceful in all respects, with just enough surround material to accentuate the aural experience, while never sacrificing dialogue or subtle sound effect clarity. The second disc in this set contains all of the supplemental materials (no, as usual, the first disc does not contain a Spielberg commentary, though it would be about time). Broken up into six sections, each contains small featurettes organized by longtime collaborator Laurent Bouzereau. These range from two-and-a-half up to nearly ten minutes, and while that may not seem impressive, the overall total runs around 90 minutes. Sections include detailed looks at the visual effects of ILM, locations, stunts, extensive art galleries, trailers, biographies, and much more. Numerous interviews from those involved, including actors Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell, production designer Alex McDowell, costume designer Deborah Scott, composer John Williams, and many others, flesh out this detailed look behind the scenes. While maybe not quite up to the standards of other two-disc sets, there is still a wealth of information on making this impressive film. Coupled with outstanding visual and auditory elements, this DVD deserves as much praise as the film itself.

Another quality Spielberg film, certainly worth checking out. Intriguing story will keep you interested, and the sets and FX look great. Ultimately, this boils down to being a very classy popcorn movie, but it's still good stuff.
What's great about it: Great art direction, interesting plot

Disney's amalgamation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The Wind in the Willows, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1. English, Spanish, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a DVD storybook, a trivia game, a cartoon, and a singalong song. This is a very enjoyable family title from Disney/Buena Vista.

Classic piece of work

Ichabod and Mr. Toad comes from a point in the Disney studios history were they were trying the idea of making two shorter stories back to back and combining them with a narrative bridge, as also seen in Fun & Fancy Free. Though both short films on here are entertaining, there is no question that the adaptation of The Wind in the Willows is the star here. Toad's adventure and quest for red motor cars is a better paced and more memorable then the slower Sleepy Hollow. Once again, this is another piece of Disney animation history, and features work from many of the studios top Golden Age animators, so any animation buffs won't be disappointed.

The wait is over!

You should know just what to expect from this if you have played the past games, and rest assured SC4 lives up to it pedigree. It delivers pretty much everything you could hope for; fantastic graphics, perfect control, an epic musical score, and the excellent gameplay the series is known for. SC4 also introduces some new gameplay elements, such as armor breaking, and new types of Guard Impacts, and these work great and are awesome additions. The character roster is better then ever, and the game also has some fun RPG type elements that allow you to build up characters stats in various ways, which adds a lot of life to the single player aspect. As with past games, there is lots of stuff to collect, and SC4's take on the "adventure mode" comes in the form of the "Tower of Lost Souls" game, which offers a series of challenges similar to what was in SC1 & 2. This mode is fun, and is compelling enough to keep you playing and digging for the games many unlockable secrets. Of course, as everybody knows, Yoda is in the 360 version, and he is a bit unbalanced, as no one can throw him, nor can he perform throws, but this is a minor point, as you can just as well treat him as the novelty he is. The roster of "proper" characters is huge, and excellent, so there is no need to complain. This is a no-brainer purchase, go get it now!
What's great about it: It's Soulcalibur!

Great Movie

Stephen Chow continues the martial arts excellence with Hustle, his follow up to Shaolin Soccer. This is not your typical Kung Fu movie, and is loaded with wonderfully bizarre moments, interesting characters, and some little easter eggs for the fans. If you like Kung Fu movies and have a sense of humor, or just like good directing, this is definitely worth checking out.
