Ghostbusters meets Aliens in Evolution, a sci-fi comedy about ever-evolving extraterrestrials trying to take over planet earth. Dreamworks has done a great job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The detail in the image is crisp, the colors bright, and the black levels very well-rendered and even. No digital artifacting, edge enhancement, or excessive imperfections are spotted anywhere on this transfer. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English, French, and Spanish, as well as DTS Surround and Dolby 2.0 Surround. Both the DTS and Dolby 5.1 soundtracks are very good, utilizing the surround feature to its fullest extent. Creatures and slime swoop and ooze around the viewer as if they are right in their living room. With all aspects of the dialogue, music, and effects sounding clear and distortion free, this is an excellent soundtrack for home theater systems. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Evolution features a very nice section of supplemental materials, starting off with a commentary track by director Ivan Reitman and actors Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott, and David Duchovny. This is a fast and funny track that includes lots of production stories as well as goofy quips and jokes from the actors. "The Evolution of Evolution" is a 15-minute featurette that takes a look at the making of the film and includes interviews with much of the cast and crew. Sadly, this featurette is interesting though all-too-brief. Six deleted scenes and an alternate ending are included in anamorphic widescreen which are very funny, though it's obvious why they were cut from the final film. Finally, there are some storyboard comparisons, a small photo gallery, a few production notes, and some biographies on the principal cast and crew members from the film. This is a great edition of Evolution, and a perfect addition to any science fiction-comedy collector's DVD shelf.

Delivers what it promises

What you have to consider when deciding whether or not to purchase or watch this movie is if it sounds good to you. If it does it will not dissapoint. It is a hilarious film and contains many familiar sci-fi conventions presented in new ways. If the move does not sound entertaining or interesting to you then don't buy it because you probably won't be surprised. That's not saying it's a bad film or you have bad taste, it's just a film that won't fit yours. Trust your instinct on this film. Instinct can lead you wrong in considering many films, but not this one.
What's great about it: Funny, embraces the sci-fi genre while parodying it
What's not so great: not much of a plot

Rob Reiner directed this clever teen-centric comedy, which has been given a solid presentation for this Special Edition DVD release. The Sure Thing has been given two transfers for this disc: a letterboxed version in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which has been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors, and a pan-and-scan version in the full-screen ratio of 1.33:1. The English-language soundtrack appears in its original mix in Dolby Digital Mono, as well as in a version remixed for Dolby Digital 5.1, while this edition also features optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish. Bonus materials include a commentary track featuring Rob Reiner, three short documentaries on the making of the picture, and an optional trivia track which features fun facts about the movie.

Good for many viewings

What makes The Sure Thing a good film and worth purchasing is the ability to rewatch many times over. Some great films (Requiem for a Dream is the first that comes to mind) are made superbly and you love them, but you just don't feel like watching them ever again after the first time. I will say that The Sure Thing is not a great movie. You may be dissapointed the first time you watch it, but each time you watch it the quality does not seem to diminish and it does not seem to get old. I own a lot of movies, and though it is nowhere near the best one I own, I have probably watched it the most times. The movie is worth the purchase because every few months you will watch it and be entertained.
What's great about it: Rewatchable

Richard Linklater directs the romantic drama Before Sunset, a sequel to Before Sunrise (1995). Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) were strangers who spent a loquacious night together in Vienna. Nine years later, Jesse has written a book about the encounter. During his accelerated European book tour, he reunites with Celine in Paris. Before Jesse's flight home, he joins Celine for a picturesque walk around Paris peppered with intimate conversation. Before Sunset was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

A Worthy enough successor

This is a worthy sequel to Before Sunrise but not at as high a quality. This movie has a lot less value if you have not seen Before Sunrise so if you are considering watching this, watch that one first. The character development in the film is not quite complete enough to be drawn in if you did not connect with the characters in the first film. The movie takes the simplicity of only dialogue between two people to a new level since fewer people intervene within the day. This degree seemed almost too far for me and the reason that I loved the first film began to bore me slightly at times. However, I still enjoyed the characters, the background scenery was even more beautiful, and the style for the most part was still interesting. If you did not like the first one stay away, but if you did, then you will certainly find pleasure in Before Sunset.
What's great about it: Great background imagery, dialogue
What's not so great: not enough character development

Richard Linklater's charming romance Before Sunrise comes to DVD with two different images. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and captures the beautiful European setting much better than the full-frame standard 1.33:1 image. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. Supplemental materials are limited to a theatrical trailer. This beautifully photographed, all-talk film gets a DVD release that brings out the strengths of both the images and the dialogue.

Excellent because of it's simplicity

What makes this movie so great is that it tells the story by focusing only on dialogue and characterization. It is simply the story of two people meeting on a train without any artificially added conflicts or effects. It is told completely through the dialogue and manneurisms of the main characters who both perform admirably. A few other characters are added in but only momentarily before the story catches on. This simplicity makes it thoroughly enjoyable as does the spectacular background imagery. I think you would be hard pressed to find a more perfectly designed date movie and one that's still thoroughly enjoyable to watch alone.
What's great about it: Unique

David Fincher's controversial Fight Club has had a few incarnations on DVD. This release offers a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include four different commentary tracks. David Fincher performs one of the tracks solo. He is joined by actors Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter on another track. The screenwriter Jim Uhls can be heard with the author of the original novel, Chuck Palahniuk. Lastly, a technical commentary track consists of many of the people who worked behind the camera. This is a great disc from 20th Century Fox.

This a good movie and certainly worth seeing. I do favor the book by Chuck Palahniuk and would recommend that anyone read it first, but the movie is also very good in it's own right.

Terrible

Words cannot explain how bad this movie is. Just stay away. It provides nothing to society and just leeches off those that do. There are plenty of good parodies out there that actually contain a real storyline and character development. Look in to Mel Brooks films or The Princess Bride, but stay away from this useless piece of trash.

Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan star in this remake of director Wim Wenders' landmark film Wings of Desire (1987), arriving in an extra feature-intensive DVD release courtesy of Warner Home Video. Warner is well known for its DVD-friendly releases, and City of Angels is certainly no exception; loaded with an extensive list of exciting and informative extra features in addition to a beautiful transfer of the film itself, Warner has once again proven its diligent dedication to the format with this must-have disc for fans of the film and film fanatics alike. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1, English Dolby Digital Mono, or French Dolby Digital Surround with optional English or French subtitles, this disc's extra features start where most recent DVD releases stop. Featuring two documentaries (one a "making of," the other "Inside Special Effects"), two feature-length audio commentary tracks (featuring director Brad Silberling and producer Charles Roven), deleted scenes with commentary, cinematography commentary, production design commentary, interviews with Alanis Morissette and Peter Gabriel, an isolated music-only track, music videos from the Goo Goo Dolls and U2, five theatrical trailers, production notes, and the standard interactive menus and scene access this disc is certain to make a film geek out of even the most casual viewer.

One of the worst movies I've seen

It's been a while since I've seen this movie, but I can remember clearly the painful boredome of watching it. This movie is not worth your time or money. There are plenty of much better romantic movies out there. Check out Before Sunrise if you're interested but stay away from this one.

A Worthy Adaptation
on July 15, 2008

This a good movie and I think would have been a better one if it had been left live action. However, it is still more faithful to the Philip K. Dick original work than any of the other films based on his writings and as such is special. It does lack a few key scenes and does not convey the same feeling of paranoia as the novel, but if you liked the novel than you'll enjoy the movie.
What's great about it: Rather faithful to the book
What's not so great: Matt painting seems unneccessary/gimmicky

Watching a $60,000, black-and-white indie movie in a format devoted to video and audio clarity may seem like swatting a fly with a Buick. True, there isn't much to be gained from Pi's non-anamorphic, matted presentation (at least it's letterboxed). More importantly, this disc offers a glimpse into the low-budget world of what director Darren Aronofsky calls the "Pi family," and the driving techno soundtrack sounds at least $60K worth of decent in 2.0 Dolby Surround Sound. The behind-the-scenes montage takes about two seconds to demystify the film's special effects secret: hot glue. But viewers will also see the director's mom, Mom's best friend (who had a small acting part), and the low-rent set in low-grade color. The two commentary tracks -- one from the director and one from his college buddy and lead actor Sean Gullette -- reveal the budget- and sanity-stretching hoops the cast and crew jumped through, including shooting illegally on the New York subway and handling a real brain. Four deleted scenes with commentary, film-geek production notes, and home-video footage of the Pi family's trip to Sundance round out this fuzzy, but still fun DVD.

Great Film

If you want to see just how great of a film can be made on a small budget check this one out. The work contains compelling characters and story that will keep you watching. It doesn't have the special effects of a summer blockbuster but it certainly doesn't need them. This is pure filmmaking at it's core.
What's great about it: Uses small budget incredibly well
