Horrible ending
on November 15, 2008
Posted by: irishpink86
This would be an alright movie except that it writes itself into a corner that it can't escape from and ultimately ends up with endings that make no sense and are not actually derived from or foreshadowed by preceding scenes. If you're willing to completely shut off your brain this might be decent, but otherwise, don't see the movie.

Joss Whedon attempted to follow up his successful series Buffy the Vampire Slayer with the science fiction-themed Firefly. Although the series failed to garner a mass audience, it did have a loyal following. Those fans will be pleased by this box set that contains every episode of the series that aired, as well as three never-before-seen episodes. All 15 episodes are presented in anamorphic widescreen. English, French, and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Commentaries are available on four of the episodes. Production featurettes, a blooper reel, and a tour of the set with Whedon round out this solid package that should be of interest to genre enthusiasts as well as Whedon's fans.

Classic show
on November 14, 2008
Posted by: irishpink86
This is a classic show that got canceled way too soon. The characters all seem real and well developed, and the plots are entertaining. The mix of comedy, sci-fi, and drama is brilliant. If you have not seen this show, don't hesitate to buy it because you won't be disappointed.

John Woo directs the sci-fi action thriller Paycheck, based on a story written by Philip K. Dick in 1953. Waking up with his short-term memory erased, engineer Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) learns that he has been doing highly secretive work for the last three years in exchange for billions of dollars. But when he tries to get paid, he finds out that he himself had previously exchanged the money for an envelope of random clues to his life. Chased by an FBI agent (Michael C. Hall) and his old boss Rethrick (Aaron Eckhart), Michael uses the clues to find out his identity and prove his innocence. Uma Thurman appears as his love interest and partner, Rachel.

Better than you've heard
on November 12, 2008

This movie is probably better than you've heard it was, but that obviously doesn't make it good. The story is compelling, but the acting is not up to par. Even Aaron Eckhart whose work I generally respect just does not do a great job in his role. If you notice this movie on TV sometime it might be worth flipping to, but it's ultimately not worth the cost to buy or rent.

Kenneth Branagh's charming, all-star rendition of Much Ado About Nothing comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer, and a making-of featurette. This is a fine release from MGM/UA that should please Shakespeare fans as well as romantic comedy enthusiasts.

Good adaptation
on November 10, 2008

This version of Much Ado About Nothing is a good adaptation, and as far as I'm aware the best one. If you like Shakespeare and this play in particular, this film is certainly worth checking out. If you don't, there is still plenty to enjoy here even if the horrible acting of Keanu Reeves almost ruins the whole thing.

Another torture film
on November 8, 2008
Posted by: irishpink86
This was just another torture film that helped launch the genre into popularity. It has no real suspense, and an only mildly intriguing storyline. The plot is better than those other movies like it, but it is still the type of film that is peeling away any chance the horror genre will have at respect and true greatness.

Great fantasy series
on November 7, 2008
Posted by: irishpink86
This was a really good series. It's not entirely faithfully to the characterization created by the books, but the changes it makes adds something without subtracting much. If you enjoy good fantasy works check it out because fantasy doesn't make many appearances on television anymore.

The complete first season of The Dead Zone comes to DVD from Lion's Gate Home Entertainment with this four-disc set. Each disc contains three episodes in anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital Stereo Sound. Includes interviews and commentary with writer and creator Michael Piller, director Robert Lieberman, along with cast members Anthony Michael Hall, Nicole deBoer, and Chris Bruno. The featurettes involve the series' creation, writing, music, special effects, and guest stars. Also includes an alternate ending, trailers, promos, and closed captions.

Good show
on November 6, 2008

This is a good show that tells individual stories that really speak out. It has the feeling of an old science fiction show, which is actually a good thing in my opinion because they don't make shows like they used to. Check this show out especially at the cost it is going for now.

Interesting adaptation
on November 5, 2008

This adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew was actually pretty good. If I had any love for the play, I would probably have rated it higher. The Commedia dell'Arte influence, which is more accentuated in this performance than any other I've seen, really adds an interesting and entertaining dynamic. If you actually like The Taming of the Shrew, certainly check this out because I think you'll enjoy it. If your like me and don't, then you probably won't want to spend your time or money watching it.

William Shakespeare's comic tale of 16th century male chauvinism gets the royal treatment as Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor star in this delightful adaptation of one of the Bard's most comically delightful works. Presented in the original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for widescreen TVs) and featuring a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack, this release also offers alternate Spanish and Portuguese Dolby Digital Mono tracks in addition to English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, and Thai subtitles. Extra features include production notes, theatrical trailers, a bonus trailer, and talent files.

Interesting adaptation
on November 2, 2008

This is an interesting adaptation because it is mostly through Katherina's point of view instead of Petruchio's. This slightly dulls the dispicable level of chauvinism present in the play, but it is still certainly there. If you like Taming of the Shrew, you might like this production. I just hate the play.

One Crazy Summer comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but this title does boast excellent picture quality.

Good for what it is.

This is a good film, but Better Off Dead is a better one that is in the same intentionally corny style. If you have not seen Better Off Dead, I would suggest you get that first. If you have seen it and really liked it, then you should certainly get this movie too. The movie does have it's funny parts and certainly gives a nostalgic feel even if you've never seen it before because of it's ridiculously corny style.
