Cute Chick-Flick
on July 8, 2008
Posted by: fiddler
If you're a young dreamy, ideal girl yearning for love...a very emotional person indeed (usually most girls aged 13-18), you'll love this movie. No doubt about it. Otherwise, 7 times out of 10, you would think it's okay.
I thought it was alright. I'm not too into very predictable movies unless it's a child movie I grew up with or if it's just plain fun. This movie had its cute moments. The couple in it fought hard for love, and the little scenes between them could make even the most callous of man smile. What turned me off was I predicted what would happen 2 minutes into the movie.
I could complain that this movie is too ideal, but when I think about it, there were a lot of struggles to overcome, and the main message trying to be put across by the movie is that love conquers all.
What makes this movie so appealing is the simple pleasures that the couple does to show how they love each other. That always gives a warm feeling.
Would I watch it again? Maybe one more time. I'd recommend it, though. Maybe during one of those emotional phases in your life, you'll need a comforting movie as this.
What's great about it: warming romance, good message, feel-good, great chemistry between leads, girls would love it
What's not so great: very predictable, guys most likely would not care for it, very ideal
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good, but TI 83 Gets Job Done, too.
on July 7, 2008
Posted by: fiddler
A lot of you will buy this for your high school (and it carries on to early college) classes, and you know, as cool and more modern as this calculator looks, the TI-83 is just as good, gets the job done, and costs less.
Let me warn you, if you are in NY state, in order to take a Regents exam that requires a graphing calculator, the proctors will ERASE the memory and all the programs on your calculator before you take it.
It has extra features like the Periodic Table. Now, for college exams, they also clear the calculator, because they do not want any act of cheating.
If you have the extra money to spend, go for it. It's chic and nice. Usually in classes, you are not taught all the different shortcuts through the calculator you can use to solve problems (often the teachers/instructors don't even know them), so unless you are planning to take an extensive course load of medium and upper level math courses in college, most features are unnecessary.
What's great about it: many features, easy to use, clicky buttons don't get stuck, large screen, extra features
What's not so great: most of functions you never usually need to use, costly, color does it matter?
I would recommend this to a friend!

Better than I expected

I'll rank the Saw movies in order of my most favorite and least:
1) Saw
1) Saw II
3) Saw IV
4) Saw III
(I can't decide which one out of the first two is better) The fourth one (this one) is better than the third, in my opinion. Like every Saw movie, there is a twist. The twists in the last two have been no where near as INTENSE and SHOCKING as the first two, but decent.
I like this movie and recommend it because if you've watched this one, 99% likely, you were a Saw fan and watched the whole set so far. You have to watch this one.
You won't be disappointed though. As a Saw fan, I wasn't.
What's great about it: keeping the Saw legacy alive, new ideas, suspenseful
What's not so great: very gory, confusing (two of the main characters look a lot alike)

Mark Rosman's family fantasy film Life-Size comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are no subtitles, but the soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, making this disc almost impossible to recommend to anyone who is not looking for something to watch with the entire family. This is a bare-bones release from Disney/Buena Vista.

Very Fun Movie
on July 5, 2008
Posted by: fiddler
I watched this as a kid and still love it, so I may be biased.
The song "Eve's Great, no matter where she goes" just thinking about it reminds me how juvenile this film may be, but I still recognize it as a fun watch. Its the type I can watch over and over again.
I'd recommend it for girls 16 and under, although, if a girl grew up around this movie, she'd love it no matter at what age. Tyra Banks is just as beautiful as ever, and this was shot during Lindsay Lohan's rising child star time... she was great.
It's about getting over a loss and moving on--the hard, but fun way. While trying to bring her dead mother to life through a book of enchanting spells, the girl accidentally brings to life a doll she got as a birthday present.
A creative mind must have thought this up, though it has some flaws. Oh well, I enjoyed it. It's never too late to give it a try.
What's great about it: funny, interesting/unique plot, Lindsay Lohan-great child actor, Tyra Banks convincing doll
What's not so great: a bit far-fetched, but the point was to be enchanting, don't think boys would care for this movie

You'll Either Like it or You Won't
on July 3, 2008

I didn't really like the movie. It was so-so but I was disappointed. I usually enjoy cross-cultural movies. This movie, I will admit, had its moments of humor, but I felt the movie was degrading to South Asians by harshly portraying them as overly simple and gullable villagers, totally alien to the modern world, needing an update. I'm usually quite open-minded in my views, and found other East Meets West comedy movies like Bend it Like Beckham and Blind Dating quite great , but this one is just too reliant on racial stereotypes, and the plot is very shaky.
The idea about falling in love with a non-Indian partner and dealing with the family is alright-- that's definitely a real-life issue many Indians in the West face, but the whole idea of taking a village girl and making her a glamor girl in a little while is pretty silly. She perfects her English, learns all the trends, works out to have a great body, etc, all so quickly, as if she was like an infant quick on learning. Unrealistic.
I will admit, this movie did try to be unique by not trying to go too deep in the clash between cultures and identity struggle that other cross-cultural flicks focus on, rather, it was more of a superficial--what outsiders may see- ordeal. This oversimplifying may have been the exact factor that made this movie so-so and not good.
2.5 stars on a 5 stars scale.
What's great about it: humorous at times, unique
What's not so great: very very stereotypical
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Tween Kids of Today Will like it
on July 2, 2008
Posted by: fiddler
If you want to get this for a kid 14-15 and under, then be my guest, 8 times out of 10 they'll like it. Very popular tween sensations like Miley Cyrus, cast members from High School Musical (Corbin Bleu, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale), and the popular bands made famous by Disney-- the Jonas Brothers and the Cheetah Girls re-sing Disney songs of their choice in their own style.
Some of them are alright... it's unique alright and a good idea. My favorite if I had to choose one... "Colors of the Wind" Vanessa Hudgens.
What's great about it: popular Disney channel stars re-sing Disney songs, each song has unique style
What's not so great: most of them are not better than the original but kids may like these modern versions better

Great for a Sequel!
on June 30, 2008
Posted by: fiddler
Like most people, when I watch the a sequel to a movie I like, I expect something great for the sequel and end up walking out disappointed or unimpressed (i.e. it was so-so). Saw II is a different story. I loved it.
It's different from the first movie in that the main story line (that of the protagonist) is equally balanced with the story of the other tortured victims... but nevertheless, everything in the movie is done for a purpose. To continue to saga and absorb the irony.
I'm not too fond of the human torture, which is a main feature of the movies...what makes it so frightening/disturbing, however, in this movie we learn more about Jigsaw, the serial killer's, past and his twisted but somewhat understandable ideology. The mystery feature to the movie is just as good as the first.
Watch it and you secure your place as a Saw fan-- you won't be disappointed!
(Note: I still like the plot of the first movie better than the second, however, overall the first and second movies are both comparable in terms of a quality watch)
What's great about it: not a disappointment as many sequels are, huge twist in the movie, suspenseful, better acting, good script
What's not so great: more grisly and bloodier than the first, too many victims to follow at the same time

Excellent CD! Very Intense!
on June 29, 2008

I found Bond through youtube, and I was instantly mesmerized. The video for Explosive is so exciting and emotionally stirring, I felt like I was preparing for battle.
A group of four talented women playing string instruments blend classical music with a pop twist to create unique musical melodies everyone can enjoy. The songs are wordless, and even so, my Hannah Montana-loving younger sister really enjoyed some of the Bond songs.
My favorite tracks: Explosive, Fuego, and Shine...
Like I said before, you'll either love it or just not feel it. It's an interesting experience, so check them out on youtube, and if you like what you see, buy the CD! Good background music for while you're busy doing other things!
What's great about it: unique style, intense musicians, 4 beautiful girls, classical and modern blend, exhilarating
What's not so great: either you'll love it or it's not your thing. that's basically it.

Memorex offers a full line of DVD RW recordable blank media. The 4X DVD RW media packs can reliably be rewritten up to 1,000 times and can store up to 4.7 GB of data, approximately 120 minutes of video. Consumers can transfer home movies from VHS or 8mm cassettes, back-up computer hard drives and large files. The new 4X media is backward compatible with a firmware upgrade, which can be downloaded at www.dvdrwservices.com. With larger storage capacities on DVD media, users can store at least 6.5 times more than on a CD-R/RW. DVD media allows the preservation of favorite videos, precious photos, valuable data and an entire music library. The DVD RW disc was developed for DVD RW/ R drives.

Good Buy for a Good price
on June 28, 2008

This was my first DVD-RW buy, and I was satisfied. None of discs were unusable, and my only concern is burning files onto the disc took longer than I had expected (keep in mind my files were hovering around the 4GB capacity)
I also have this okay quality DVD-VCR recorder combo for my TV, and the recording and dubbing mode for the DVD-RW worked
And for someone who has not used a DVD-RW before, if you have big files you want to store, I recommend it. One disc can be reused many many times. You should be wary if you were to burn a DVD format movie on the disc, because some DVD players cannot play RW's.
No problems so far... give it a try!
What's great about it: gets the job done, reliable storage, works on DVD recorders well
What's not so great: can be slow, when formatted can hold ~4GB

A Twisted Delight
on June 27, 2008
Posted by: fiddler
Critics have never seem to embrace the Saw movies as the consumers do... I have found that people who at least somewhat enjoy horror/thriller movies come to LOVE these movies for all thrill. The critics seem to find all the bloodshed and human torture displeasing. I keep up with all the Saw movies because it becomes an addiction, even though the 3rd and 4th cannot live up to the first 2.
Now, yes, it is excessively bloody... although I believe Saw (the first one) is the least bloodiest so far, however, I think that's what adds to the scariness. Other horror movies rely on the supernatural to strike fear into our hearts, while this movie startles us by testing mortality... How fragile we are as humans, after all! It can get to be a bit uncomfortable. I watch it for the mystery.
It's a great interactive movie, watch it with friends at night for a spook.
Basic plot:
A serial killer meticulously chooses his victims, who have specific problems in life, to play a game with him... a game of life and death. The victim has to overcome his problem in order to live, but most end up dying a bloody and torturous death. The police are on the serial killer's tail, but Jigsaw (the killer's nickname) has such an ingeniously twisted plot against any who threaten his plans that viewer's at home don't know what to expect.
That's all I can really say. Confusing? Yes.
The plot is GREAT! The problem is, the film was made on a low budget, so they could not hire great actors for the part. The movie is excellent but could be better if they had more natural/convincing actors.
If you haven't seen it, give it a shot! The movie is getting old now, but with a Saw V coming soon, new Saw fans are always welcome! Start with the first one!!
What's great about it: excellent plotline with a great twist, very unique, thought-provoking
What's not so great: human torture, quite bloody, not suitable for children at all, decent to poor acting
I would recommend this to a friend!
