A fascinating twist on fim noir
on October 21, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Brick is a film noir mystery story set in a small-town high school The story follows Brendan, a smart loner who finds his beloved ex-girlfriend Emily dead at the entrance of a tunnel on the outskirts of town. This occurs shrotly after she sends him a puzzling phone call that mention cryptic things such as "brick", "tug", and "pin". Brendan decides to throw whatever he must into finding out who killed Emily. This leads him into the darkest pits of the local underworld, including the realm of The Pin, an enigmatic young local drug lord.
What makes Brick great is its faithful adherence to the noir style. Some of the dialogue has actually been borrowed from old noir films, and is integrated seemlessly into the film. The whole finished product is so hard-boiled that it might as well take place in the 30s and feature someone the likes of Humphrey Bogart himself.
This is a unique picture, and I really enjoy it. I recommend this to anyone who likes a good mystery, and as a brilliant nostalgic effort in regards to genre that has changed considerably in recent times.
What's great about it: Excellent dialogue and a mesmerizing plot
What's not so great: None.

The best Batman movie aside from the Nolan films
on October 20, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Batman Mask of the Phantasm was easily the best Batman film of the 90's. Tim Burton's takes on the character were very stylish and dark as well, but had little Batman mythos and although fun and memorable were fairly shallow takes on the hero and his more famous villains. This film, however, even as a cartoon manages to tackle such fascinating aspects of the Batman as whether he has ever loved or how he can deal with it.
The film begins when a series of mobsters are killed by a mysterious cloaked figured with a strange tendency to appear and disappear from nowhere and a large blade instead of one of its hands. This figure is mistaken for the Batman, and it becomes the belief that he has finally gone crazy and is tackling the underworld of Gotham. As Batman seeks to stop the killer and clear his name, Bruce Wayne's old love Andrea returns to Gotham, and throws his private life into disarray. Forced to face a past in which he sought to lead a normal life, Bruce is torn between his desire for happiness and his duty as Gotham's Dark Knight.
This is a very layered story, and the voice acting is top-notch. Mark Hamill of course steals the show as the Joker, who becomes one of the killer's targets, and who gets the chance to push the limits of his psychosis much more in this film than he even did in the television series of which this film was the culmination. There were some lesser spin-offs later on, but this is definitely the coup-de-grace for a truly great show.
I recommend this to anyone who likes Batman. It's fun for all ages, but it's not too childish for the oldeer crowd. Also, if you love Christopher Nolan incredible reboot series (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight), then you will find that the level of darkness and intelligence in this film is similar to that found in those. This is brilliant entertainment.
What's great about it: A really dark story that shows some interesting insight into characters like Bruce Wayne and the Joker
What's not so great: Nothing.

Silly and shallow, but awesome

Con Air is one of those great action films in that its only goal is for most of the scenery to blow up and for you to continually experience adrenaline bursts throughout the film. As such, it's one of the genre's best: an entertaining, frequently humorous and always amusing film with some surprisingly good actors obviously having a good time. That may not be the makings of an Oscar winner, but it does make for some great action entertainment.
This is the story of Cameron Poe (Nicholas Cage, at the peak of his glory days), a convict who's just been released and is hitching a ride with a prisoner transport plan to get home. The trouble begins when a bunch of the convicts on board decide to take over the plane and fly it to freedom. Led by the vicious murderer Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom (John Malkovich. What more can i say?), the group intend to get away clean. However, Poe can't let this happen, for fear that he'll get part of the blame and won't be able to go home to his family. Thus, he helps U.S. Marshall Vince Larkin in secret, hoping that they can stop the criminals before they reach freedom.
Some of the minor characters in the film are a lot of fun as well, especially the ones played by Ving Rhames and Danny Trejo. However, my favorite character is the serial killer played by Steve Buscemi, who actually provides the film's comic relief and turns out to be quite likeable. He also provides my favorite line in the film, delivered while the others dance to Sweet Home Alabama by Lynard Skynard. I won't spoil it for you.
I recommend this to anyone who likes action movies and is willing to forgive one that focuses more on action than plot. As far as Jerry Bruckheimer productions go, this isn't that dumb, and it's loads of fun.
What's great about it: Funny action film with some great actors in the main cast.
What's not so great: If you don't like the style of Michael Bay, this is not for you.

While nobody believed that a parody of Scream (itself a parody) could ever work, Keenan Ivory Wayans, along with brothers Shawn and Marlon turned the concept into mega-bucks at the box office. The DVD version, while somewhat skimpy, is sure to please the film's legion of adolescent fans, while winning some new ones in the process. The picture is a solid 2.35:1 widescreen anamorphic transfer that has excellent depth and clarity. The sound is also done well, presented in Dolby Digital 5.0 with good use of surround in certain sequences. Extras are where the disc falls short. There are six deleted scenes, which are well worth watching, as well as a theatrical trailer. Those without a DVD-ROM drive, however, miss out on an interactive guide to the film, the script, a quiz, and character profiles. These are all interesting extras, and should be available to everyone. Scary Movie is a funny movie and is given decent treatment on DVD; but the lack of extras is a sore point.

One of the better spoofs out there
on October 18, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Scary Movie was the first film in a new wave of send-up films that, thanks to two of this film's writers, have now degraded to the point of the latest of the genre, such as Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, and Meet the Spartans. Those films are monstrous abberations and are completely unfunny, but Scary Movie does succeed in being humorous a good portion of the time.
The plot is a direct copy of the first Scream film (ironically itself a satire of the slasher genre, created by Wes Craven, who has characterized much of the slasher genre since it was first created), in which a group of teens are being stalked by a knife-wielding killer in a black cloak and white ghost mask. This film also mocks another slasher film of the same year, I Know What You did Last Summer, so this film includes a sub-plot lifted from that film in which the killer is aware that the teens killed in a drunk driving incident (sort of, in this case) and subsequetly covered up for their own sake.
The plot isn't the point here. The plot is just the loose framework upon which jokes are hung, and some of them, though FREQUENTLY crude, are actually quite funny, and the Wayans Brothers (Keenan Ivory Wayans directs and his brothers Marlon and Shawn act) successfully give the slasher genre a good grilling. They even find some time to poke fun at a few other things on the side, and the ending is a pretty fun, if totally non-sensical parody of The Usual Suspects.
I don't recommend this to anyone who hates crude or simple-minded comedy, but if you like stupid humor, this will likely work for you.
What's great about it: An often fuunny but shallow comedy that set out the new age of spoofs (not a good thing)
What's not so great: As stupid as you expect it to be

The first film to be officially co-credited to Joel Coen and Ethan Coen as directors, The Ladykillers debuts on DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. A French soundtrack has also been recorded. French and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a reel consisting of co-star Irma P. Hall slapping around Marlon Wayans, a pair of featurettes about the gospel music heard in the film, and a script reader that allows those with a DVD-ROM drive to read the script -- and allow the viewer to see any scene in the film by clicking on the corresponding line in the script. This modest box-office hit has been given a modest, effective DVD release by Disney.

A really fun dark comedy
on October 17, 2008

This is the story of a gang of robbers led by Goldthwaite Higginson Dorr Ph. D (Tom Hanks, in what may be his only villain role, who really has fun with it), a silver-tongued, calculating, and ruthless man who dresses like an anachronistic Southern plantaion owner and is unafraid to do (or at least order his minions to do) anything it takes to get away with his plot to heist a casino in a small town in the South. Dorr takes up residence in the home of the elderly Ms. Marva Munson, who is fooled by Dorr's claims that he and his friends are an orchestra band who frequently need to practice their craft in the basement. In fact, they are tunneling their way to the casino they are robbing. Their crew comprises Gawain MacSam (Marlon Wayans), a foul-mouthed young man whose ill manners are frequently corrected by Ms. Munson, Garth Pancake (J.K. Simmons, who along with Hanks steals the show), an explosives "expert" with an unfortunate case of irritated bowel syndrome, The General (Tzi Ma), a quiet but lethal man, and Lump Hudson (Ryan Hurst), the token mentally challenged youth. These are Coen Brothers characters at their most ridiculous, and their antics and eventual (unsuccessful) attempts to eliminate Ms. Munson after she becomes aware of their schemes are a source of great amusement.
This isn't the Coens at their strongest, but there's really no such thing as a bad Coen Brothers film, so I really recommend that you see it if you're looking for a bit of fun dark comedy.
What's great about it: Great performance from Tom Hanks and a great mix of clever dialogue and slapstick humor
What's not so great: None.

Miller's Crossing is the Coen brothers film that few are familiar with, which is a shame, since it's one of their best works. For the most part, this DVD does justice to an amazing work of art. The high point is unquestionably the image. Framed at 1.85:1 and anamorphic, it's impossible not to recognize Barry Sonnenfeld's gorgeous cinematography. Of particular interest are the browns, which permeate the film. They are warm and full of detail, as is the remainder of the color scheme. The darkness of the film is obviously part of the Coens' master plan, and it comes across spectacularly here. It's refreshing to see that this film wasn't give a lesser treatment. The 4.0 Dolby Digital soundtrack can't match the visuals, but that doesn't mean it's not noteworthy. Though surrounds are rarely heard, there is some separation up front, giving the film extra life. Sadly, the supplemental features are rather thin. Though good, an interview with Sonnenfeld on a number of subjects related to this film just isn't enough. It seems clear there is so much more that could have been discussed, but simply isn't. Brief interviews from Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden, and John Turturro don't have the time to add much either, though the actors' love of this film is quite obvious. Finally, along with a photo gallery of meager proportions, are trailers for this film, Raising Arizona, and Barton Fink. While lacking in some ways, Fox has done just enough to satisfy the fervent legion of fans that adore this film.

The Coens take on the gangster genre admirably
on October 16, 2008

Miller's Crossing is the result of the Coen Brothers, legendary writer/directors, taking on the gangster genre. The result is a complex and brilliant tale of betrayals, deception, and the bitter toll that a man's mercy can take upon him.
This is the story of Tom Reagan, a lieutenant in crime lord Leo's mob during the Prohibition era. Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito, who is always brilliant in Coen Brothers films, giving what I believe is his finest performance here) is an up-and-coming mobster, who asks that Leo kill Bernie (John Turturro, brilliant) who crossed Caspar. Leo refuses, however, because Leo's girl Verna (Marcia Harden) is Bernie's sister. Reagan disapproves of Leo's choice, and when it is revealed that Reagan and Verna are together, Leo casts off Reagan. Reagan chooses to go join Caspar, but when he is given his first assignment, to kill Bernie, Reagan chooses to secretly spare him. Caspar's right hand man, Eddie Dane (J. E. Freeman, another brilliant presence in the film) keeps a suspicious eye on Reagan, particularly as Reagan continues to maintain contact with Verna and Bernie, forcing Reagan to play a fine line between the many different factions at work.
This is a great gangster film, and really has nothing too much in common with other popular films in the genre, which along with the Coens's brilliant screenplay makes this a very unique film. The resolution is particularly excellent, and like many of the better Coen films, it's a very grim film, but not to the extent that it overwhelms the story. This is a great picture.
What's great about it: A great story of betrayal and the hazards of showing mercy in the mob
What's not so great: None.

A genuinely thought-provoking techno-thriller
on October 15, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Enemy of the State was made in the late 90's. Nonetheless, ten years later it hasn't lost any of its significance. It's the story of Robert Dean (Will Smith), a big-shot lawyer who finds himself in the midst of a government manhunt when a former friend runs into him at a store while running from NSA agents and places a tape in Dean's bag, unbeknownst to Dean. As it turns out, the tape contains evidence that Reynolds, a top member of the NSA, killed a congressman who stood in the way of a bill that would allow the government greater power to track civilian communications. Dean is forced to go one the run, but the enemy is behind his every step, because of how overwhelming the governement's ability to track Dean's every communications is. Dean is eventually helped by the mysterious Brill (Gene Hackman, terrific as always), a former government communications expert who now lives as a sort of techno hermit and is none too happy to get dragged into Dean's mess.
This can easily be viewed simply as a fun bit of entertainment. Director Tony Scott keeps the pace of the film more-or-less breakneck without losing control of it at any point, and the result is edge-of-your-seat entertainment (a severely overused phrase that actually fits in this case). Also, the film is a surprisingly interesting critique on the extent to which communications technology has overtaken our lives and how in some ways, it has made us slave to our own advances. Luckily, the film doesn't drown itself in an attempt to become a message film, and as entertainment, this remains top-notch.
What's great about it: Solid action and a tense, interesting plot
What's not so great: None.

The first season of this sleek spy series mixes plenty of action with sex appeal and a dose of wry humor. While on a covert mission in Nigeria, spy Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) discovers he's been burned, which equates to being fired in the world of espionage. After escaping the immediate danger of his assignment, he wakes up in Miami with no memory of how he got there and discovers his accounts have been frozen and his contacts cut off. Forced to fend for himself, Michael recruits the help of the only friends he has: Sam Axe (Bruce Campbell), a former intelligence contact whom the FBI has tapped to gain intel on Michael; Fiona Glenanne (Gabrielle Anwar), a spunky ex-IRA operative looking for closure after being dumped by Michael several years earlier; and Michael's meddling mother Madeline (Sharon Gless), who's thrilled to have her son back in her life. Despite the often uneasy state of these alliances, Sam, Fiona and Madeline each bring their own skills to the table to help Michael find out who burned him and why. In order to fund his investigation-not to mention more mundane expenses like rent-Michael picks up a side job as a private investigator helping Miami citizens obtain justice. Each episode chronicles a different case, opening the way for notable guest stars like Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) and Richard Schiff (West Wing). But Michael's main goal throughout the season is following the convoluted trail of betrayals and double-dealings that led to his burn notice.

This show is really awesome!

Burn Notice is a really fun show about Michael Westen, a spy working for an undefined agancy who learns that he has been burned and is now blacklisted and quarantined to Miami. Westen wants more than anything to learn who burned him, but it's not as simple as it sounds. His unknown opponent generally seems content to just keep him stuck in Miami, but as Michael gets closer to the answers he seeks, people occasionally do try to kill him.
That is just the overarching storyline, however. The bulk of the show involves Westen trying to deal with ex-girlfriend and former IRA agent Fiona, old friend Sam (a frequently show-stealing Bruce Campbell who is perfect for the role) and his mother and brother, who, though incredibly annoying to Michael, are trying hard to bring together a sort of family feeling and bring a greater depth to Michael and to the show in general. Each episode involves a story in which Michael is somehow recruited to help someone in trouble. Each of these cases involves the use of Michael's finely-honed espionage skills, which is really great because as he does anything relating to spy tricks-of-the-trade, Michael provides a cheeky voice-over that explains what's going on and gives spy tips. It's a lot of fun, and although the cases are resolved by the end of the episode and could be looked upon as a sort of gimmick, they don't overwhelm Michael's search for who burned him and are in fact quite compelling and unique.
Overall, this succeed as both a great spy show and detective series. Seeing Michael and his pals evade danger and discover the solution to each case is really interesting, making this one of the better shows on television.
What's great about it: Great characters, frequent humor, compelling stories, and dead-on casting, just to name a few
What's not so great: Some people might get sick of the jobs that are dealt with in each episode. I didn't, but some might.

A hilarious comedy about frienship
on October 13, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Superbad is an interesting type of romantic comedy: it centers less on the boys' attempts to get with the girls they like than on their close friendship. Thus, it becomes a sort of genre of its own: the "bro"mance.
The story revolves around Evan and Seth, two high school seniors who are going to different schools next year and are getting ready for their last chance to get girlfriends before college. Even, the skinny quieter kid likes Becca, who is a sweet girl in some of his classes, and Seth, an overweight loudmouth, likes Jules, who he has known for a while and who is in his Home Economics class. They find their chance when their geeky friend Fogell gets a fake ID. THey off-handedly tell Jules about it, and she asks Seth if he could be the alcohol provider for a party she's hosting. Seth sees this as his chance to score with Jules, and Evan hopes to do likewise with Becca at the party. Thus begins a veritable journey to get liquor and bring it to the party before it's too late.
This is a very funny film, peppered with highly quotable lines (none of which are appropriate for this review) and amusing characters. Fogell in particular is very funny, with his fake ID declaring his name to be "McLovin" and the series of misadventures he gets into with a pair of goofy cops who think he's 25. What makes this film so winning is the fact that the friends stand by each other through thick and thin, and by the end of the night they've really learned something about themselves and their friendship.
This is a really fun movie, and if you have yet to see it I recommend that you pick it up.
What's great about it: A well-written, dialogue-driven comedy about high school, friendship, and even "love"
What's not so great: People who dislike crude homor will likely want to give this one a miss

Tim's Burton's brilliant first live-action film
on October 12, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Beetlejuice was Tim Burton's first directorial and live-action effort, and in pretty much every way it defines the style he continues to use today. It's delightfully offbeat and weird, while maintaining a firm stance in the gothic realm that Burton is so famous for. Above all, it's extremely funny.
The story begins with Adam and Barbara, a young newly married couple who live together in a large old house in a small town. They accidentally drive off a bridge trying to avoid hitting a small dog, and are both killed. Along come husband and wife Charles and Delia and their rebellious daughter Lydia to buy their house. Unfortunately for them, Adam and Barbara have returned as ghosts, and although they get along quite well with Lydia, they want their house back. Their solution: Beetlejuice, a "bio-exorcist" who tells the couple he can solve their human problem, but has some schemes of his own.
Keaton steals the show here. In the 80's Keaton was known for roles that portrayed him more as a wacky comic character or as a deranged sociopath. In this film, he gets to combine both of them to some extent, and the result is an unforgettable, classic performance. Keaton sets the screen on fire whenever he's on it (and occasionally even when he's not). There's a reason why Beetlejuice is the main character here.
I really suggest that you see this movie if you haven't. It's a classic, and it won't soon go out of style.
What's great about it: Fantastic sets and an unforgettable role by Michael Keaton
What's not so great: None. None whatsoever.
