Wes Craven's Scream became a box-office blockbuster and breathed life into the nearly dead slasher genre. This DVD of the film is an improvement over all previous editions. The disc offers a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials include a pair of commentary tracks (one from the director and another from writer Kevin Williamson), interviews with the cast and crew, theatrical trailers, television promotional spots, cast and crew profiles, making-of footage, and a special effects gallery. No matter what one thinks of the film, this is a superb DVD from Disney/Buena Vista.

A great slasher movie/satire
on November 15, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Scream is Wes Craven's satiorical look at the genre he helped create (with the making of the Nightmare on Elm Street series): the teen slasher flick. Scream works quite well as both a slasher and a satire, and the result is definitely a contemporary classic.
It's the story of Sydney Prescott, a high school girl whose mother was brutally murdered a year ago, allegedly by a man named Cotton Weary who is now on death row. Now, Sydney suddenly begins to get threats from an unknown person who mentions her mother's killing. Soon, a string of murders comes out, and the small town that Sydney lives in is in an uproar. Sydney must stop this killer before he has the chance to kill her.
It's a straightforward enough idea, but there are penty of twists in the plot throughout the film, and a pretty good twist at the end that will likely shock those who haven't seen the film or its spawn of spoofs and copycats (especially Scary Movie). this is a good slasher film, but it's also something more than that, and if you enjoy the genre, then you shouldn't miss out on this.
What's great about it: It's satire/homage to the great teenage slasher filcks, and it really works as both a horror film and a satire
What's not so great: About this film, nothing. However, the million or so knock-offs it has spawned are not so great

The complete 22-episode first season of the award-winning drama The West Wing is compiled in this special box set, which treats the material with care and respect. All the episodes have been transferred to disc in the original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and the audio is mastered in Dolby Digital Surround. The dialogue is in English with optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish. Bonus material includes commentary tracks featuring members of the cast and creative team; two documentaries on the production of the series; a behind-the-scenes look at how an episode is produced; outtakes, bloopers, and unseen footage; and interviews with the cast and crew.

One of the best shows I''ve ever seen
on November 13, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
This show had the best pilot I've ever seen. I realy can't list all of the shows I've seen in my life for you to compare with, but they include the likes of "The Wire", "The Sopranos", "The Office" and many other quality programs. I'm not saying that this show is necessarily better than those; I'm merely stating that with the very first episode I saw, I was hooked.
The West Wing follows the trials that must be overcome on a daily basis by the President and his staff, including his Chief of Staff (John Spencer, incredible. Actually, everyone in the lead roles is phenomenal, so I'll no longer comment on that from this point forth), his deputy (Bradley Whitford), the Communications Director (Richard Schiff), his deputy (Rob Lowe), the White House Press Secretary (Allison Janney), and the President's personal aide (Dule Hill). They live through the daily trials and necessities of being in the White House.
The show and its characters are fascinating, as is the shows intricate explorations of the democratic process in the United States and the duties of its President. However, it must be noted that the administration in this show is Democratic, thus all of the issues and events raised in the show are seen from the point of view of a liberal administration, and therefore may not appeal to conservative viewers. This is a decision that each viewer must make themselves, to be sure, but the show's political content must be taken into account. That aside, this is an excellent show (which won record numbers of Emmy Awards) and a landmark of network television. I recommend that you avoid missing out on it.
What's great about it: Every character is fascinating, the stories are frequently touching, and the show gives great insight into politics
What's not so great: Conservatives beware: This is about a Democratic administration, and thus the issues of the show are liberally-slanted

An off-the-wall action fantasy
on November 9, 2008

Wanted's writers scrapped over 90% of the graphic novel's original storyline, which would never have worked onscreen because of its pure debauchery. What's left is the story of Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), a cubicle drone who resents his meaningless life and who's best friend and girlfriend are sleeping together behind his back. Things change, however, when he learns that his father, who left him and his mother when he was very young, was part of a secret society of assassins, and that he was just killed by a renegade member of the group. Now Wesley, who unknowingly shares his father's extraordinary abilities with firearms, must join the society and be trained to take on the renegade with the help of the deadly Fox (Angelina Jolie, as beautiful and deadly as always) and the society's leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman).
The movie splits audiences generally between those who embrace it's blatant comtempt for the laws of physics and any sort of realism, but if you accept the fact that nothing on the screen is remotely possible, then this becomes a thrilling effects actioner, and as such it's hard to resist. It's brutally violent and ruthlessly kinetic. Director Timur Bekmambetov, who became famous for his Russian Night Watch series turns his unique skills with special effects and reality-bending to this film, his first American feature, and it's a marvel to gaze upon. If you like action and you're not a stickler for realism, I recommend you give it a shot.
What's great about it: It's coompletely unashamed of how ridiculous it is, and as a result it's pure, glorious escapism
What's not so great: Some people will dislike the lack of realism. Just be warned, there is absolutely NONE here

Everyone's favorite vigilante serial killer returns with a vengeance in season two of the hit Showtime series Dexter. In this season, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) begins to experience the sting of self-doubt while contending with a particularly dark chapter from his distant past. Meanwhile, the FBI launches an investigation into a series of murders committed by the "Bay Harbor Butcher", causing Dexter to take serious pause in order to protect his dark secret.

Another great season for this excellent show

Dexter Season 2 continues along with pretty much everything that made the first season great, although of course there are some new plot twists. This plot summary is incomprehensible if you haven't seen the first season, just to warn you.
The Ice Truck Killer is gone, and now Dexter looks ahead to getting his life together and moving onward. However, the bagged bodies of his victims are uncovered at the bottom of the bay he uses as a dumping site. Also, dexter is dealing with Sergeant Doakes, who now follows him everywhere he goes, making it impossible for Dexter to fulfill his murderous duties. As Dexter seeks to divert the police away from finding out about his other life, the final straw comes as Rita comes to the (incorrect) conclusion that Dexter is a heroin addict and forces him to join a recovery program, where he meets Lila, a strange, free-willed woman who leads Dexter into dark territory.
There a lot to keep you interested this season, and if you liked the first season, you definitely shouldn't skip out on this one.
What's great about it: THe story is again very interesting, and the acting remains top-notch
What's not so great: Fans of the novel will find little in common with the source material this season

The original slob comedy, which is still the best
on November 6, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Animal has spawned several knock-off, such as the recent Old School, largely because it set the standard for college slob comeides, or just crude humor in general. Some of this film just seems downright offensive, even by today's relatively lax standards. One can only imagine how people felt about this when it came out. But with that said, this movie is glorious, and remains one of the funniest comedies of all time.'
The story is that of Delta House, a fraternity so bad in terms of behavior and academics that the stiff-collared dean of the college it's located at has declared that he will finally get it shut down. Meanwhile, the Deltas go about their slovenly and raucous business, wreaking havoc on the campus and just generally having a grand old time. Eventually, they are forced to try to salvage their frat by proving to the school board that they are worthy to continue at the school.
The point isn't the plot. Not that it's poor, or even negligible, but it's just that this movie is REALLY funny, and that's really the reason to see it. The formula has been copied a million times. The results were just never this good.
What's great about it: Funny, crude, rude, and full of classic scenes and lines, not to mention the timeless performance of John Belushi
What's not so great: If you don't like crude humor, even when it's done this well, this might not appeal to you

Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a bright and charming high-school student who also has a dark and willfully eccentric side; he does little to mask his contempt for many of his peers and enjoys challenging the authority of the adults around him. Donnie is also visited on occasion by Frank, a monstrous six-foot rabbit that only Donnie can see who often urges him to perform dangerous and destructive pranks. Late one night, Frank leads Donnie out of his home to inform him that the world will come to an end in less than a month; moments later, the engine of a jet aircraft comes crashing through the ceiling of Donnie's room, making him think there might be something to Frank's prophesies after all. The rest of Donnie's world is only marginally less bizarre, as he finds himself dealing with his confused parents (Mary McDonnell and Holmes Osborne), his college-age sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal), his perplexed analyst (Katherine Ross), a rebellious English teacher (Drew Barrymore), a sleazy self-help expert (Patrick Swayze), and the new girl at school who is attracted by Donnie's quirks (Jena Malone). Donnie Darko was the first feature film from writer and director Richard Kelly; Drew Barrymore, who plays teacher Karen Pomeroy, also lent her support to the project as executive producer. A director's cut played in select theaters on a limited basis in the summer of 2004, featuring original music cues and trimmed scenes originally in Kelly's first cut of the film.

A film you should definitely see in your lifetime
on November 5, 2008

Donnie Darko is genuinely a film you should see at least once in your life. It may not turn out to be your cup of tea, but nonetheless it is a cinematic creation that you should experience. It is both shockingly weird and gloriously original, and it's manipulation of time and space is a subject that few films have tackled as boldly or as well.
The story is that of young Donald Darko, a troubled high schooler in a dysfunctional family. The year is 1988, and the presidential election between George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis is fully underway. This is just one of the many things putting tension on the family, who are struggling with a number of issues, including Donnie's mental problems (which are hinted to be schizophrenia, making all of the events in the film highly questionable). The night that the film begins, Donnie sleepwalks to a nearby golf course, where he has a vision of a giant demonic rabbit-man named Frank who tells him that the world will end in 28 days and some hours, minutes and seconds, down to the exact second. That night, as Donnie is asleep on the golf course, and airplane turbine falls through Donnie's room, where he would have certainly been killed were it not for Frank. Thus begins a dark journey to the end of existence for the protagonist, and as Donnie's new collaboration with Frank will changed donnie forever, so will it change the lives of everyone who is close to him.
There is no easy summary for the events in the film, or its narrative, so I suggest you see it for yourself. Whether you like the film or not, surely you'll agree with me that there is really nothing like it.
What's great about it: The story is jarringly original and will leave you thinking
What's not so great: Not all viewers will "get" it

A fun shooter with surprising humor
on November 4, 2008

Battle field Bad Company involves you playing a guy named Marlowe who is put into a rag-tag platoon called Bad Company, which is basically the miltary bottom of the ladder. The squad is assigned the worst of the worst, and in the midst of your current mission, you find out that a group of mercenaries is carrying massive quantities of gold. Your group, which includes the Seargent, know-it-all Sweetwater, and the undereducated but enthusiastic Haggard, is about as far from professional military as it can get, but you all band together and decide to go into restricted territory to find to loot, thereby being declared AWOL and abandoned by your army.
The game's a lot of fun, and the destructible environments never really get old. There's a lot of ways to play this, and one of the great aspects of the game is that you can play it straight through fast to get through it, or you can try to collect all of the items along the way. Also, the humor of the game itself makes it a really enjoyable experience all around. It's a long enough game, about 15 hours if you rush through it, or more if you take your time. The graphics are quite good, and while this isn't an entirely groundbreaking experience, it's likely one that you won't regret taking part in.
What's great about it: It's funny and all of the environments are destructible
What's not so great: When you die, no progress is lost, making the game rather unchallenging. This does make the game very leisurely, though.

OPne of the greatest films ever made
on November 3, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
The Dark Knight is the start of a new era for comic book films, and even for summer blockbusters. A smart, dark, realistic film, it seems like an antithesis to the flashy, shallow entertainment that generally fills the multiplexes in the hot summer months. This is the kind of film that you go out of your way to refer to as a "film".
The story begins about a year after the events of Batman Begins. Batman (Christian Bale) and Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) have formed an unofficial alliance and are hard at work to take down the Gotham mob, who are weker than ever. Along comes a mysterious bank robber known as the Joker (Heath Ledger, in the final performance of his career, and one of the most memorable ever) who has spent the last year stealing mob money for fun and now comes to the crime bosses of the city with an interesting proposition: he will take out the Batman for half of their loot. They mock him at first, but soon are forced to accept his deal. However, as the Joker's crimes become deadlier and more out-of-control, everyone in Gotham realizes that the only one who can stop this menace is Batman, who in the Joker finds his deadliest foe: a maniac without fear who obeys no rules and will stop at nothing to bring chaos upon Gotham and take the very souls of its citizens. Meanwhile, Harvey Dent, the new District Attorney of Gotham joins Gordon and Batman in their quest to stop the mob, but is soon forced to make terrible sacrifices and must even risk his relationship with Rachel Dawes, who is Bruce Wayne's childhood friend.
If the story sounds complex, it's because it is; wonderfully so. Never before has a summer action film has such varying layers of depth. It thrills and engages the mind. The performances range from good to great; Ledger's turn as the Joker will likely net him an Oscar nomination or victory for Supporting Actor.
The Dark Knight is the farthest thing from disposable entertainment, and its high level of accessibility to a mass audience merely adds to its greatness. This really is the Godfather II of graphic novel adaptations.
What's great about it: Everything, from the acting, to the direction, to the breathtaking cinematography
What's not so great: It ends. Seriously, this is my favorite movie ever!

A no-holds-barred, hilarious comedy/satire
on November 2, 2008
Posted by: CrimsonKing42
Tropic Thunder is a comedy that will offend a lot of people. In fact, it'll most likely offend everyone at least a little. Which is what makes it great.
It's the story of a crew that's shooting a war movie called Tropic Thunder, based off a book written by war hero Four-Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte, doing the best Nick Nolte parody I've ever seen) who lost his hands in combat. Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller, who also directed) plays Tayback in the movie. He's a washed-up action star who's one flop away from being done forever. Then there's Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), an Australian method actor who undergoes a skin pigmentation procedure to play the platoon's African-American Sergeant, Lincoln Osiris. Finally, there's Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black at his funniest since School of Rock), a comedian who's sick of doing toilet humor and has an unfortunate drug addiction.
There's a bunch of great supporting characters, including Danny McBride and Matthew McConaughey, but the real scene-stealer is Tom Cruise. I won't give away his role, for those who have yet to see it, but it's absolutely brilliant. Downey Jr. is also incredible. His mockery of how far an actor will go for a role is the most memorable thing about this very funny film.
Comedy is the most relative of genres, so naturaly some will not like this film. All I can say is that I saw it thrice in theaters and laughed every time. This is good stuff.
What's great about it: Hilarious and unflinchingly offensive, with great performances from the cast, especially Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise
What's not so great: Nothing.

A fun comedy that's surprisingly strong on action
on November 1, 2008

Get Smart is a really fun movie. It certainly feels like a summer movie event, and the production values go in accordance to that. The actors and the overall goofy tone may the film a really fun action-adventure-comedy.
The story is that of Maxwell Smart (Steve Carrell), an inetlligence analyst for CONTROL, a government agency that opposes the evil forces represented by KAOS, led by the villainous Siegfried (Terence Stamp). When the list of CONTROL agents is compromised, and only the unbeatable Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) remains. She is partnered unwillingly with Max, who has always wanted to be an agent, and together they have to stop KAOS ans make the Chief (Alan Arkin) proud.
It's definitely a goofy film, and the comedy is never overlooked. Max definitely bumbles his way through some situations, but surprisingly he knows what he's doing quite a lot of the time, which was refreshing. Also, the humor and the action both work, which made the whole experience wuite a bit of fun.
Overall, though I can't compare it to the popular series, which I unfortunately never saw, this is an enjoyable film which I recommend to both lovers of comedy and action.
What's great about it: It's funny, charming, and action-packed
What's not so great: Some may not care for the romantic subplot, but I did.
