Jim Carrey classic comedy

This is a great "super hero"/comedy movie. With Jim Carry portraying Stanly Ipkiss, this is truly a funny movie that will leave you wondering and laughing to the very end.
What's great about it: great special features and great effects

The DVD of Jonathon Mostow's underwater WWII thriller U-571 supports the film with an impressive range of extra features, including a widescreen, anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Audio, and a commentary track with Mostow. Featurettes on the making of the film and the creation and construction of the U-571 submarine add more behind-the-scenes insight, but the disc's historical materials are richer and more rewarding. An exploration of the Enigma, the Axis powers' encryption device; archival U.S. naval film of the capture of U-505; anecdotes from a WWII submariner; and a featurette on the British capture of the U-110 (the story of which inspired U-571) are possibly more gripping -- as well as more historically accurate -- than the film itself. At any rate, the DVD gives equal attention to U-571 and the events on which it was based, making the disc worthwhile to action fans and historical buffs alike.

Allan Dwan's stirring World War II film The Sands of Iwo Jima comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. French and Spanish subtitles are accessible, and the soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a trailer and a making-of featurette. This is a fine disc that will appeal to John Wayne fans as well as genre enthusiasts.

Ben Affleck stars as action hero Jack Ryan in the adaptation of Tom Clancy's The Sum of all Fears. The film is presented in a pristine-looking 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Paramount has done an excellent job at making sure the colors, black levels, and flesh tones are all well saturated and represented accurately. Besides the smallest amount of edge enhancement, this transfer appears to be in great shape. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English. This is a very enveloping sound mix that sports directional effects from both the front and rear speakers to maximum effects. All aspects of the mix are free and clear of any hiss or distortion, making this 5.1 audio track a great ride for movie fans. Also included on this disc are Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround soundtracks in English and French, as well as English subtitles. This special "Collector's Edition" of The Sum of all Fears sports a few fine supplements, starting with a commentary track by director Phil Alden Robinson and cinematographer John Lindley, and a second by director Robinson and novelist Tom Clancy. Both of these commentaries should provide viewers with a wealth of both story and technical information about the making of the film. While Clancy often complains about the "butchering" job done to his book, he is filled with a lot of neat information about the script and the events that take place in the film. Seven short featurettes ("Casting," "Production," "Carrier Attack," "A-4," "Hospital," "Motorcade," and "Helicopter") offer a glimpse into how the film was cast, what it was like to work on the special effects, and how many of the visual stunts were achieved. Each of these featurettes focuses on a different aspect of the film, some running longer than others. Finally there is a theatrical trailer for the film.

Disney DVD gives their sprawling swashbuckler a feature-packed release that is sure to give both your DVD player and PC a workout. Presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the film transfer is nothing short of perfection. While some may doubt the ability of such a large-scale film to transfer suitably to television, the sharp image and beautiful colors do so with ease and grace. From the creepy moonlit scenes to the sparkling treasure cave, the colors are bright, vivid, and spectacular. With sound options that include THX-optimized DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, Disney DVD has offered viewers a vivid soundscape that perfectly compliments the visual presentation. The DTS soundtrack, in particular, will have viewers ducking under their coffee tables to avoid cannon fire. It seems only once or twice a year that a DVD comes along that truly redefines what can be accomplished on the format, and this is no doubt one of those discs. This release of Pirates of the Caribbean is virtually overflowing with great extra features, and viewers may need a free weekend just to navigate their way through its wealth of materials. Starting off with three separate commentary tracks, viewers will likely want to start with director Gore Verbinski and star Johnny Depp's amusing and informative recollection of the film's production. Though it may not be the most technical commentary, the two play well off of one another, and the result in an interesting and informative track. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer provides a bit more detailed take on the production, and stars Keira Knightley and Jack Davenport check in with what is definitely the most amusing commentary track. It's obvious that the two stars are comfortable with each other, and hearing them joke around as they recall the exhausting shoot is a blast. Writers Ted Elliot, Terry Rossio, Stuart Beattie, and Jay Wolpert's commentary provides notable insight on how the screenplay changed from draft to draft (and script to screen), though one gets the impression that they're stepping on each other's toes a bit to get a word in, and the result is a bit crowded. "An Epic at Sea: The Making of Pirates of the Caribbean" checks in at about 40 minutes and covers everything from location scouting to the spectacular Disneyland premiere of the film. "Fly on the Set" takes a look at both the director in action and how the filmmakers managed their many cinematic feats and sleights of hand. If one wishes to explore the life of actual pirates they need look no further than the "Below Deck" feature, which actually takes viewers aboard a pirate ship to explore the true-life tales of history's most notorious seafaring scallywags. From Blackbeard to Sir Francis Drake to women pirates and Chinese pirates, this informative feature utilizes interviews with maritime historian David Cordingly and film clips and is one of the most fascinating and insightful features on the disc. The accompanying feature, "A Prisoner's Last Tale," also speaks with Cordingly to provide detailed insight on the day-to-day life of a pirate. "Diary of a Pirate" consists of a "Producer's Photo Diary" (which is also narrated by Bruckheimer), a video journal by star Lee Arenberg and a detailed study of the brig Lady Washington (which served as The Interceptor in the film). Deleted scenes mostly offer a more intimate look at the characters, and a blooper reel collects some of the most amusing on-camera flubs. After viewers take a detailed look at one of the film's most entertainingly frightful scenes in "Moonlight Serenade," an image gallery offers production sketches, storyboards, and production and publicity photos. The vintage promotional short "Pirates in the Park" takes them on a nostalgic ride through the actual Disneyland attraction. If viewers aren't entirely exhausted by this point, the DVD-ROM features are sure to do them in. From an effects studio to a virtual reality viewer and storyboard viewer, these intense interactive features will truly put your home PC to the test (the DVD-ROM features will not work on Macintosh computers). From the serious film student to the curious youngster, this release has something for everyone. A must-have for DVD fanatics and fans of the film alike.

This movie was a terrible disappoitment. The story took way to long to develop, only to leave you with a bad ending. The only reason I would recommend this movie to you, is if you wish to see all three of the Pirates of the Carribean movies.
What's great about it: The second part of the POTC story
What's not so great: the story took to long to develop

This is the so-called final chapter of the Pirates of the Carribean saga. This is one that you must see and if you have not seen the first two, I do not recommend that you see this untill you have seen The Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest! All in all an excellent movie that just leaves you astonished.
What's great about it: excellent movie with a great story
What's not so great: a little too longggggg

The Story of Pearl Harbor told from both sides
on February 27, 2008
Posted by: benjiboy
Very few movies are as true as this one. This is the true story of Pearl Harbor, as told from both sides. The two sides show just how the Japanese got to Pearl Harbot virtually undetected. See why and how.
What's great about it: The story sticks to the true story and is not biased
What's not so great: similiar to the movie Midway

One of the most important World War II films of our time and winner of five Academy Awards, Saving Private Ryan is a seemingly routine DVD, but it packs a big punch. In addition to standard DVD extras such as production notes, cast and crew bios and the theatrical trailer, this disc includes "Into the Breach", a 25-minute making-of featurette that is both an informative history lesson on D-day and a story of Spielberg's fascination with war. "Into the Breach" includes interviews with D-day survivors as well as of Spielberg and his father and spotlights his early student war films Escape to Nowhere and Fighter Squadron. The film itself receives a great transfer in widescreen 1:85, and Dolby Digital or 5:1 Surround.
