Fantastic! Performance, look and value...
on June 1, 2018
Posted by: skylog
Great TV! I am moving from a recent mid-range Samsung 4K and I think this outshines it in nearly every way. From looks, to performance, features and finally value, I think Vizio brought the goods here.
For starters, I like the look and design. It is a fresh, sleek, and metallic bezel-less appearance on three sides with a solid feel that rests on sturdy aluminum legs. It is a very modern edge-to-edge, yet not over-the-top look. Beyond the looks, it comes with quite a few connection options. Further, all 5 HDMI ports support 2.0a which help with 4K HDR connectivity. Another nice feature is built-in ATSC tuners, for those not tied to a cable plan.
Once you are up and running (set-up is an easy process), you get a look at that picture. The picture is clear, crisp, bright, and detailed while the colors are brilliant, pop and are both rich and alive. It is a VA panel, so there is a little distortion when at extreme viewing angles, as opposed to an IPS, but it is a tradeoff, as the VA brings better blacks and much better contrast levels. For my money, that is what one would prefer. The TV also has full array local dimming (FALD) (Vizio calls it Active Full Active Array) with 56 local dimming zones which is crucial for HDR. It is not perfect, but it is much better than edge and nice to have at this price point. As for HDR, Vizio has most of the current formats covered with this set. Dolby Vision (with UltraBright 1000), HDR 10 and HLG are all there. Beyond that, they offer something they call Ultra Color Spectrum which brings more accurate color detail and a wider range of the color spectrum. What does all this mean? As I said, it means a great picture. 4K content is out of this world. Details, colors, blacks all look outstanding. Up-scaled content also looks great, which is important, given I watch a lot of non 4K content. There are countless options and calibration settings to fine tune everything. I spent a great deal time of time here, but I think it is time well spent. You can absolutely get the most out of your purchase/experience.
The speakers are acceptable to good. They should be good enough from most people, but if you are looking for immersive sound for theatre etc…you will probably want to turn to a surround system or sound bar. Not really a knock, as they are good for everyday use, but just something to think about.
Given it is 2018 and streaming is so important, it is nice Vizio brought quite a bit to the Smart TV aspects of this set. They offer their Smart Cast OS, with apps already on the TV and their Smart Cast mobile app. In addition, Google Chromecast is built in. Honestly, Smart Cast can feel a little slow at times, and I did not have the best experience with the mobile app, but things worked great with the pre-installed apps (Netflix and VUDU are what I use) and while using the Chromecast. I will have to give this more time to see how it plays out. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration are also nice smart features. While I found they work fine, it is just something I am not used to doing in my day to day with regards to my media consumption. I will also have to give that some time, but I like that it is there.
Lastly, the included remote works well enough, but is a little basic. There are buttons for several streaming services (Netflix/VUDU/Amazon…) and it does what you expect, but it doesn’t have any advanced features and lacks any backlighting, which would have been appreciated.
Ultimately, I really like this TV. Most importantly, it has a great picture, with clear and brilliant details, great black levels and fantastic HDR performance. Its specs hold up, if not shine, and it has a nice design. If you are looking for a large 4K display with all the HDR formats and full array dimming at a great price you can’t do much better than this TV.

Simple. Retro. Loads of Fun.
on May 30, 2018
Posted by: skylog
This is a fun point and shoot with a retro feel that is perfect for those ‘in the moment” moments. The OneStep2 is all about fun. It has a simple design (so very reminiscent of Polaroids of the past) that is white, chunky, vintage and plastic. While it looks as if it is from the 70s, it does charge via micro USB and comes with a LED indicator for power as well as one that shows how many shots you have left. There are few buttons, they are all basic, nearly everything is automatic, and operation is a simple process. This is the point.
Since it is essentially an automatic, it takes a few snaps to get yourself accustomed, to how everything comes together, to how pictures will look, but after some time you should have it down. That said, do not expect the crisp, over-saturated pictures we have become accustomed to these days. These are simple, quick snaps with a vintage feel. The magic comes in being able to snap a pic and have a hard copy nearly instantly. I think it is great! I have found that the black and white film takes “better” pictures, but that is just my opinion and I heavily slant towards monochrome, so take that for what you will.
Now, for all that I like about this camera, my one issue is the film. Perhaps this is because I am not used to, well, buying film, but while it is not “expensive,” it is not “cheap” either. You only get 8 shots per pack. They do offer a few types, color, monochrome, and some special colored film variants. Adjusting oneself to not endlessly snapping is tough, but, maybe it is better in the end.
Ultimately, I think this camera is a blast! It definitely has a place for people looking to capture some fun moments as they happen, getting that hard copy, for the moment, to keep or to give…as well as for those with a little love for retro photography. Just know what you are getting!

Stylish, well-built, feature-rich and great coffee
on May 14, 2018
Posted by: skylog
I have had a few coffee makers since I discovered, ok, realized is a better word, all the wonders of coffee. That said, this is the first one that I have had that goes beyond “entry level.” This Breville is far, far beyond that. It is a premium machine.
Included is the coffee maker itself, stainless steel thermal carafe, cone filter basket, mesh reusable filter basket, plastic measuring spoon, 10 flat bottom paper coffee filters, water hardness testing strip and manual. Everything is packaged well, so I would not be concerned with damage if you are having the unit shipped.
Moving to the unit itself, the Breville is well-designed, well-built and looks fantastic. Their reputation for quality is earned here as the unit has a good weight (it is a bit tall) and is solidly built with a nice blend of metal and plastic (where needed). Further, this is a great looking coffee maker. The brushed stainless steel, which matches that of their other appliances, gives it a sleek look that should work it anyone’s kitchen.
Now, the coffee. Honestly, I could not be more pleased. The Breville seemingly has everything. It is all controlled via a clear LCD screen, a nob and a couple of buttons. There are settings for several brewing modes: Fast, Gold, Strong, My Brew, Over Ice and Cold Brew. This is where it gets cool. Fast and Strong are self-explanatory, but Gold (and I had to look this up) produces a coffee that meets certain industry standards for a cup of coffee (temperature, contact time…) Over Ice is similar to strong, but it compensates for the dilution of the coffee in ice to give you the right flavor balance. My Brew allows you to take control and customize several aspects of your coffee. You can control the bloom time, brew temperature and flow rate. Cold Brew gives you the ability to, well, have cold brew. This is one of my favorites. It takes a lot of the acidity away from the coffee. Lastly, as if all that is not enough, the machine does have the ability (in the My Brew options) to do pour over (although you need to purchase a $30 kit). It is wonderful to have a machine that gives you options.
The operation is typical of any coffee maker. Once you pick your brewing mode you can choose from single serve up to 60oz. There is a programmable/timer setting that allows you to have coffee ready in the morning. I have found it brews quickly, so I have not used the timer much, but it is nice to have. The thermal carafe is well-designed (it collects the coffee with its lid on) and keeps the coffee warm for a couple of hours without giving it a poor taste. Since it is stainless steel, however, you can’t see or easily tell how much is remaining. A minor trade off, but some do prefer glass. Finally, I have found cleanup relatively easy. The stainless is a breeze, the shower is easy to remove and with a little work the carafe can be kept clean. The only rub here is that you cannot remove the water reservoir.
Ultimately, there is a lot to like about this Breville machine, and I do. Designed well. Works superbly. Looks stylish. That checks a lot of boxes. Beyond that, it is great to see a machine that gives you so many options AND can just give you a great cup of coffee with the press of a button. I think this is a great machine for both the casual drinker as well as the connoisseur.

Exactly what I was looking for
on April 29, 2018
Posted by: skylog
This soundbar was the perfect solution to my audio dilemma. I recently made the move to a 4K TV and I was really looking for a way to enjoy the improved sound and enhance my consumption of media. I did not want to buy a receiver and my small space was not optimal for the corresponding wires and speakers that would be needed.
Enter this Samsung sound bar. It is a much simpler, compact, and more elegant alternative. It comes with the sound bar itself, wireless sub, remote, optical cable, power cables, power adapter and wall mount kit. The sound bar is well-built, feels sturdy and looks like a premium product. The design is unlike sound bars I have seen, with an almost wedge-like shape. According to Samsung, this is function meeting form, as it allows for their “Beam Forming” technology to throw sound in all directions. The wireless sub is something else that I am quite pleased with. As I mentioned earlier, space is at a premium for me, so having some flexibility with its placement is a great bonus.
Setup is, simply, a breeze. Power the units, plug in your source. There really is not much more to it than that. Depending on your equipment and needs, there are a few ways to go about it, with an added detail here and there, but in the end, you should not have any major issues.
So, how does it all sound? Honestly, I am quite pleasantly surprised. The sound is loud, filling my space, crisp, clear, and deep. Highs, mids and lows are all covered. The sub does not throw “earth-shattering” bass, but it is there and brings that welcome punch to your content. Further, as an avid movie watcher, it Is great that dialogue is clear with ample volume. As I have more time with this, I am confident it will all only get better as I tune the settings more to my liking. Lastly, I am very impressed with the directional sound this throws out. Action ebbs and flows across the screen and the sound absolutely follows it. It adds an immersive quality to my content that, quite honestly, made me wish I had moved to something like this much sooner. The ability to add more speakers to this system is welcome, and something I am very much considering.
Ultimately, I think this is a great system. It checks all my boxes…well-built, looks great, performs well, has some flexibility, is a great value and, perhaps most importantly, because of all those things…allows me to enjoy my screen time more. That is what is all about.

Good overall headphones, great value
on April 5, 2018
Posted by: skylog
As a whole, I like these headphones. They are a nice, well-rounded pair of cans that would be a solid pick for most people. I found the noise cancelling good, though not perfect, as there were a few instances where I felt they could have done a better job. That said, I still feel Sony hit the mark there.
Beyond that, they are comfortable, have outstanding battery life, look good (in black), and sound great. Connectivity is not an issue, the microphone worked well for me and the app/assistant features were a nice bonus. The headphones are solidly built, and I think they will hold up over time, but it would have been nice to see some metal in the construction. That does make them quite lightweight, but time will have to tell. Further, some type of case would have been appreciated.
All in all, a solid set of features, good performance and a great value. Sony lives up to its name.

Great brush! Improves your oral health
on March 25, 2018
Posted by: skylog
I have some prior experience with Oral B electric toothbrushes, although the last one I owned was several years ago. I did not expect that much of a different experience with this new model, but I was wrong. Not that the ones I used in the past were bad, but this one clearly is improved.
The build quality is excellent, feeling light, yet sturdy and solidly built. It feels good in the hand. You definitely have a sense this is a product that will survive your bathroom with all its moisture and hard surfaces. This can be said for the brush itself as well as the charger. As for the battery life from that charger, it is also excellent. The brush is rated for 2 weeks away from the base, which is a nice convenience, when needed, but I do find myself simply keeping it on the charger. It works best in my bathroom setup.
Now, how does it, well, do its job? This is the most impressive part to me. In an age when there is an app and a gadget for everything, perhaps too many things, I feel this brush performs more than well enough to justify its use and cost. My teeth feel nearly dentist clean after every use. With how important, yet neglected, dental health is these days, having a product that improves that on a personal level is a wonderful thing. Between brushing aides, timers, modes, tracking, pressure feedback and simply the technology used in the brush itself, using this brush will absolutely lead to improved dental health.
Yes, there is an upfront cost. Yes, there is the cost of replacement heads (which I find to be reasonable). That said, do you know where there are plenty of other higher costs? At the dentist, when you need work done due to improper care of your mouth. This brush is a small investment that pays for itself many times over and in many ways.
Ultimately, this is a great toothbrush. It is well-built, has a very rich feature set, performs well (and intelligently), and is a great value. I can confidently recommend this brush to those looking to move from a manual, upgrade their electric or simply, anyone looking to improve their oral health.

Bright, Portable and Great Overall
on March 21, 2018
Posted by: skylog
After spending a little time with this Epson projector, I can say with conviction it is a nice piece of tech and extremely, for lack of a better word, practical. It may not have countless bells and whistles, and the specs may not be jaw-dropping, but do not let that turn you away. It does what it is designed to do and does it very well.
To begin, it has several video inputs that should meet most people’s needs: HDMI, component video, S-Video and Composite Video. In addition, it has RCA audio inputs. These should handle most scenarios you deal with out in the wild. Further, since it is wireless, you can also use your cell phone, laptop, tablet, or other wireless input to share content. I really appreciate that versatility and flexibility, even though I experienced some lag when using my phone. Still, a great option, but something to keep in mind.
The picture quality is very solid, and while it “can” be used for home media/theater use (do not expect high quality theater sound), that is not truly what it is designed for. I would turn to another solution for that. The resolution is “only” 720p, and while the brightness is absolutely fantastic, and the picture vivid, where it really shines is in presentation and office use. To further enhance that value, its relatively small size and light weight make it quite portable. Epson also tosses in a carrying case to sweeten the deal. A nice touch.
Ultimately, I really like what Epson has done here. As a whole, I think it is a fantastic, compact, lightweight and capable projector. It offers quite a bit of versatility, ease of setup, a rich feature-set, and solid performance. You have to know your use case, but if it fits what this projector is designed for, you won’t be disappointed! Easy recommendation.

Great wireless headphones...
on March 11, 2018
Posted by: skylog
I was really looking forward to getting these headphones, and I can happily say they are everything I was looking for in a set of cans for my home set-up. I consume a ton of media and was looking for a set of headphones that had great sound as well as the versatility and convenience of being wireless. These deliver in both areas.
They are slightly unique as they are really intended for dedicated purpose home use. They do not connect via bluetooth, but rather an RF system. As such, the phones come with a dock that not only serves as a charging unit for the headphones themselves (battery life is fantastic), but also as an “in” for your audio source and finally as a “base” for your signal. I guess a lot of people expect bluetooth here, but the 185’s are not really designed for that kind of experience. What you may lose in connection options is made up for by better range and better sound due to uncompressed audio. For me, that is a win-win.
Design-wise, the headphones are full-size, open-back, and comfortable; however, given said design, they do not offer noise-cancellation. Something to consider, as you will hear outside noise. They offer a fair amount of padding and the felt cups feel quite nice. After a few hours, I did not feel any fatigue, as they did not seem tight on my head. As always, this could vary from person to person, but I do not think it will be an issue.
The wireless is rock-solid, has a great range and only ran into some small issues when I was really testing the limits, trying to see if I could cause problems: no line of sight, multiple floors, sets of walls…etc. In “normal “use, I suffered no signal break-up, had no range-issues and they sounded great.
As for sound quality, they deliver. I mean, they are not perfect, they are a little light on bass, and as always, you can get better sound wired for less money, but the main reason for these is to get better audio from a wireless product…and you do. Audio is loud, clear, and clean.
Ultimately, I really like these headphones. They have a lot to offer: good audio, great wireless, a comfortable fit, extended battery life and Sennheiser quality. All of that said, understand what these are intended for and know your use case. If these fit your use case, as they perfectly did mine, I think you will really like and enjoy these headphones.

Simple. Functional. Capable. Tremendous Value.
on February 11, 2018
Posted by: skylog
Whenever discussing a Chromebook, one must account for what it is meant to be and what it is. Chromebooks, in general, and on the value end with this model, will not offer the shiniest and best specs, but honestly, they are not supposed to. It is simply about allowing you to accomplish the most common everyday tasks. After some time spent with this Acer machine, I can say that it does those very things well.

The machine is a solid device, especially for the very affordable price. It has a nice look (with a brushed metal dark gray plastic design), is solidly built and relatively light given the 15” inch screen. There is a nice selection of ports, fast 802.11AC built-in WiFi, a pair of “decent” speakers, and a keyboard that I rather like. Battery-life has been impressive, and I think that will hold over time.
Performance-wise, I have no complaints. Boot times are just about instantaneous, and initial set-up is ridiculously quick and easy. You are up and running in no time. Once there, I just love the simplicity the Chrome OS provides. Let’s be honest, most of us…check e-mail, watch videos, spend some time on social media, buy a thing or two and browse the web. There is probably (and hopefully) some writing, spreadsheet, or other productivity in there as well. When we go to buy a computer, we buy more than we need. Obviously, there are exceptions, but generally, this is the case. For “most” people, I think this Chromebook is all they need. It does those things we do and does them well.
All of that said, if I had to pick this machine apart for one thing, it is the display. It is large, does get bright, and I like the matte style (although this is personal preference), but after being on so many high-resolution screens for so long, the 1080p does not look very crisp, is a little washed out, and given the price point is understandably not touchscreen. Is it a deal breaker? Given the value provided, no, but it is something to keep in mind.
Ultimately, if you understand what you are getting, keep your expectations in line with the intended use case for this machine and are a typical user, this machine should meet all your needs. It is no beast, but it never sells itself that way. Rather, it is a simple, functional and capable machine that gets stuff done and offers tremendous value.

Tremendous Value. Well-rounded Machine.
on January 17, 2018
Posted by: skylog
This HP Envy is great choice for people looking for a well-rounded laptop that checks all the boxes. In this mid-level class, it is hard to beat the value HP brings to the table with this laptop.
The machine looks good (a dark grey/black look with silver accents), is well-built, with sturdy construction, and feels good in the hand. It is a little “hefty,” if you are used to ultra-lights, but the weight is what I would consider normal for this type of machine, at least in the laptop configuration. When in tablet mode, the weight is noticeable, but for me is a non-issue. Despite any comment about the weight, it does come in at 0.8 inches thin. A nice form-factor. There is a full, backlit keyboard that has the smallest amount of flex, but has a nice feel and is easy to get used to. Somehow, there is also a number pad. It is amazing how much you miss the pad when it is gone. I am glad it is here.
The 15-inch IPS screen is 1080p, looks good, has nice contrast and colors, and scales well. There definitely is some light bleed, which is more noticeable in low light situations, but it is something that I don’t notice in daily use. The touchscreen works very well, in both laptop and tablet configurations. Tablet mode is achieved by simply flipping the screen over. The screen is quite responsive and does work with the Microsoft Surface Pen. At this price point, it is not included, which is understandable, but it is worth considering as it only enhances this laptop.
HP did some nice things performance-wise, using DDR4 (8GB), and choosing the Ryzen line from AMD (Ryzen 5). Unlike most of the AMD chips in the recent past, the Ryzen line performs rather well, and it shows in my use. I can run a few tasks at the same time, keep tabs open in my browser and not feel drag or slowdowns. Graphics-wise, the machine is good, about right, or better for this price point. You can play some games, but not the most intensive, and not at very high settings. Take note, the fan will really start moving when you do. Overall, I like what they did here. Perhaps 16GB of RAM would be preferred for future-proofing the machine, but 8GB is enough to get things done. The only change I would say is “needed” would be swapping out the mechanical hard drive for a SSD. It is great having 1TB of storage, but the drive is slow relative to a SSD, a little noisy and drags startup time quite high. No “instant on.” For many, perhaps this is not an issue, but as one who accustomed to SATA and even NVME SSD, this is the one real letdown I have with this machine. Luckily, a user upgrade can be done once you have the machine. That is added cost, and time, but it is nice to know it is at least an option. Perhaps in the future HP will make the change.
Given where it seems we are heading, it is nice to see that HP gives a nice selection of ports. There are 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB 3.1 (Type C), a headphone jack, a full-size SD card slot, a full-sized HDMI port and the power jack. A little of the past, the present and the future. Variety. Convenience. A great move on their part.
Whenever I’m on a laptop, sound is almost always an issue. As someone who loves music, I can say adding B&O to the equation made quite a difference. Sound quality, across the board, is rather good. Be it music, video, or games, the sound is crisp, quite loud and does not suffer much distortion. Granted, bass reproduction was not stellar, but it was nice and about all that can be expected from a laptop.
Lastly, as for battery-life, it seems to be hitting the typical marks, as I have been getting anywhere from 5 to 7 hours. That said, I need more time to get a true idea how this will hold up over time. Of course, it so very much depends on your use case. Work. Movies. Gaming. They will all drain the battery at different rates. I do not think there will be an issue here.
Ultimately, I really like this laptop. It may not have the best of any one thing, but it has many very good things. Put it all together, especially in this mid-level class, and it is a tremendous value. Those with a specific use case may want to look elsewhere, but for most people this would be a great choice. I personally have an issue with the hard drive choice, which is my only reason for a knock on my rating, but even with that caveat, I can easily recommend this laptop.
