This show is hilarious, and it's a shame there are so few episodes. It's great to see this show on DVD, and its special features are good. Highly recommended.
What's great about it: great show, sufficient special features
What's not so great: none

Chucky and Tiffany are back, and this time they've got an extra hand to help out with the murderous mayhem as offspring Glen lends a hand in skewering Hollywood -- quite literally -- in the latest installment of Don Mancini's Child's Play series. In addition to an uncut 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and a selection of either English (closed-captioned) or French Dolby Digital 5.1 audio as well as English DTS 5.1 audio with optional Spanish and French subtitles, this release also offers a variety of bonus materials for the rabid Chucky fan. Follow everyone's favorite psychotic doll in a "Family Hell-iday Slideshow" that must be seen to be believed, and once you've returned safely to the comfort of your couch, take a look behind the scenes at two decades of Chucky movies in the featurette "Conceiving the Seed of Chucky." Fans of sultry Seed of Chucky starlet Jennifer Tilly will no doubt enjoy the inclusion of her video diary as seen on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, and in addition to a written diary, gorehounds can also access "Fuzion Up Close with the Seed of Chucky Stars," in which Chucky and Tiffany speak candidly about life as a Hollywood couple, and a feature commentary track with director Mancini and star Tilly. Bonus materials included in this uncut edition but not available in the R-rated release include "Chucky's Insider Facts on Demand" featuring over 150 trivia facts about the pint-sized killer, a deleted scene, an interview with Chucy that also includes an early screen test, and an additional commentary track in which director Mancini is joined by puppet master Tony Gardner.

This film was a blast, and the unrated version is great (although there are few differences from the theatrical). There are plenty of special features on the DVD. Highly recommended.

Chucky's back and he's got a wife in the horror-comedy Bride of Chucky. The film is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and looks excellent. The image features virtually no flaws (save for a small amount of edge enhancement) with colors and black levels appearing sharp and very pristine. Overall, Universal has done a very nice job on this print. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English (as well as Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround in French). The film features a surprisingly aggressive sound mix that often utilizes both the front and rear speakers. With an ample amount of fidelity and dynamic range, this mix should please fans in possession of a Surround sound theater system. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. Bride of Chucky includes a few well-produced extra features, starting with two commentary tracks -- one by director Ronny Yu and a second audio commentary with stars Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, and writer Don Mancini. Both of these commentary tracks are filled with tons of production information and anecdotes about the shoot, though the cast commentary is far more lively than the director's. A short featurette titled "Spotlight on Location" is included featuring interviews with the cast and crew. This is a very fluffy piece that only lasts a few minutes. Finally there is a fictional diary by one of the characters, some production notes, and some bonus trailers.

This frenetic film comes in widescreen anamorphic (2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratio) and these audio tracks: English (Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround), with closed-captioning and English subtitles. Special or bonus features are confined to a "making of" featurette with cast and filmmaker interviews and two theatrical trailers. Picture quality is sharp and detailed, with interesting mixing and editing of colors such that they look harsh in some scenes and subdued in others. Audio quality is adequate but a bit lacking in the deeper bass ranges. A small glossy booklet within the cover of the plastic DVD case contains a chapter index.

One of the best action films of all time

The extreme edition of T2 is great, even though it only contains a documentary on the CGI and a brief behind-the-scenes documentary. It's still one of the greatest action films of all time. Highly recommended.
What's great about it: great transfer, extended cut of the film
What's not so great: lack of special features

Walter Becker directs the campus comedy National Lampoon's Van Wilder, which comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. The humorous supplemental materials include deleted scenes, outtakes, a featurette that originally appeared on Comedy Central, trailers, television promotional materials, a look at the music in the movie, and production notes. The other notable feature of this disc is that it contains an unrated version of the film that contains footage that was trimmed in order to achieve an "R" rating from the ratings board. This is a strong disc from Artisan.

Bob Sagat directs Norm MacDonald in his first leading man role in Dirty Work, which comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer, and a booklet containing information about the film's production. This is a fine release from MGM/UA.

This movie is very funny for most of its 81-minute duration. The DVD's problem is that it contains no other features than a booklet and the trailer. Highly recommended.

Unquestionably the Animal House for the 21st century (there are too many similarities to count!), Old School has come to DVD from Dreamworks, and they've done a fine job on this title. The 2.35:1 anamorphic image is outstanding in every way. Detail is strong, and colors come across perfectly. The transfer is as close to a direct translation from the theatrical print as you could get. As is common now, there is a chopped pan-and-scan version available separately and both rated and unrated versions for the widescreen version. Both 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS tracks are included, which may come as a surprise. Occasionally there are some directional effects, but for the most part, this soundtrack is centered in the forward speakers. Regardless, these are fine tracks, distortion free, with clear dialogue. This release is further punched up by the addition of a number of supplements. Up front is a commentary from director Todd Phillips and stars Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, and Luke Wilson. Just as with the film, this track is a party and a pleasure to listen to. Also included are eight deleted scenes, some of which could easily have been kept in this short 90-minute film. For anyone familiar with cable's Inside the Actor's Studio, a 21-minute "Inside the Actor's Studio Spoof" with the same group in the commentary will produce additional laughs. In addition to standard biographies and productions notes is a studio PR featurette, photo gallery made up primarily of direct shots from film, the theatrical trailer, and four television spots. It's hard not to laugh at the crude humor of Old School and this DVD simply adds to the experience.

I thought this film was an improvement over "Road Trip" (not a huge one, but an improvement nonetheless). The DVD has some great special features. Highly recommended.

The unrated DVD version of Road Trip is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen, and comes equipped with 5.1 Digital Surround Sound, 2.0 Dolby Surround, and 5.1 Dolby Digital. The only subtitles provided are English captions. The film comes with several special features, including "Road Kill," which consists of eight deleted scenes and production notes which are also included in the DVD's booklet. Also included is an Eels music video for the song "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues," as well as cast and crew biographies on the film's nine principal actors and 11 filmmakers. Two theatrical trailers are included, as well as a five-minute "making of" featurette hosted by Tom Green, and a DVD-ROM feature with a trivia game and screensaver. Finally, the scene index is accessible through the special features index. The sound and picture quality is excellent.
