One of the most successful fantasy films of 2001, The Mummy Returns gets the deluxe treatment on DVD, with a sharp transfer and a bevy of bonus features. This edition of the film has been given a letterboxed transfer at 2.35:1 (it's also enhanced for widescreen monitors), as well as a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in both English and French (sorry, but no subtitles). Director Stephen Sommers adds a commentary track, and there's also a bonus featurette on the making of the film. An interview with famed professional wrestler the Rock (who appears in a supporting role) is included, as well as short features on Egyptian lore and legend and the creation of the film's elaborate special effects. The rock group Live appears in a music video for the song "Forever May Not Be Long Enough", featured in the film's soundtrack, and consumers whose computers have DVD-ROM drives can access additional online information on the movie and how it was made. There's also a pan-and-scan DVD available of The Mummy Returns with most of the same bonus features, but true fans of the film will want the widescreen edition, which truly makes the most of the film's striking visual effects.

Universal has released the Ultimate Edition of The Mummy, but the original Collector's Edition DVD still stands on its own, a disc that other studios still should look to for inspiration. This disc has a fantastic picture; the golds of the desert sand and the dark blacks and grays of the Egyptian catacombs are perfect. The anamorphic transfer is no doubt part of the reason it looks so good. The disc is framed at its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 (the same Collector's Edition disc is available with a pan-and-scan transfer). The 5.1 Dolby Digital English track takes advantage of the large action scenes and the smaller, dramatic moments. While the sound is centered, for the most part, in the front and front-side speakers, there are liberal uses of the surround speakers and the subwoofer. Dialogue is squarely in the middle and is never distorted. In addition, there is a 4.0 Surround track in French along with subtitles in English only. Universal rarely skimps on extras with the Collector's Edition and this disc is a perfect example. The "making of" documentary, with cast and crew interviews, focuses on the visual effects created by Industrial Light and Magic. At times it's a highly complex discussion of their work, maybe more than the layperson can fully grasp; nevertheless, it provides fascinating information. There is also a director/editor commentary track, six trailers from this and other Universal films, deleted scenes, an interesting section on Egypt (Egyptology 101), and DVD-ROM features.

The first season of the critically acclaimed Alias comes to DVD with anamorphic widescreen transfers of all 22 episodes, including the uncut 65-minute pilot. The series was shot in the HDTV format, so the picture quality is excellent, far surpassing that of the original standard-definition television broadcasts. Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound is available, as is a Spanish-language option. Notable extra features include six deleted scenes, a gag reel, a production diary, and a ten-minute documentary focusing on the show's stunt work. There are also commentary tracks on four episodes: "Truth Be Told," "So It Begins...," "Q and A," and "Almost Thirty Years." The high quality of the picture and sound make this set a must-have for fans, and newcomers will find it to be the perfect entry point into an enthralling series.

The second season of the top-rated espionage series Alias has been given a quality presentation for its release in this DVD set. Alias: Season Two has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format, at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The images have also been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The audio, in English, has been mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1; optional English subtitles have been included, but there are no multiple language options. Bonus materials featured on this set include audio commentaries featuring members of the cast and crew; two short documentaries on the production of the show's second season; a selection of deleted scenes; a blooper reel; a look at the creation of the Alias video game; and a parody of the show created for ABC's Monday Night Football.
