the most underrated & overlooked album of all time
on September 11, 2007

you've heard the name. you've heard the voice. you probably never heard this cd or even knew it existed but you have definitely missed something amazing. many thanks to whomever thought to re-release this album as it deserves a second chance. most of us probably remember linda when she fronted the defunct band 4 non blondes in the early nineties. after parting ways, she hooked up with producer bill bottrell to produce this masterpiece which was released in the latter 1996 on the interscope label. sadly, very few people knew of the release &eventually the album went out of print. linda perry was forced to go independent. doesn't this just kill you? if there was ever any question as to how talented or innovative ms. perry was, this album is a great reference point. forget the albums that she produces for everyone else. this was the real mccoy. in flight is a grand example of the energetic world ms. perry encompasses with grace. hear it for yourself before it goes out of print again.

another reason to seek out out independent artists
on September 11, 2007

anyone could see why the music industry is currently stagnant when everything on the radio sounds about the same. one could even go so far as to say that it's rather saddening when there are so many talented artists out there making great music who may never be acknowledged by either mtv nor your local radio stations. after listenint to artists like ani difranco & dar williams for years, i grew to dislike the radio offerings more & more. jonatha brooke is another example of underrated independent brilliance. from the opening track, she kicks off a ear grabbing song entitled linger. ok, great track. good voice. hold on! it just gets better & better. by the time you arrive at the last track of steady pull, you are simply hitting the repeat button on your cd player to relive the experience again. while ms. brooke could easily be classified as a folk artist, her music toys with pop rock & even a hint of reggae or torch music. this album could easily have garnered some crossover appeal radiowise if only someone knew about it. buy one for yourself or someone you love. in fact, buy two!!!

david lynch's latest masterpiece
on September 10, 2007

first of all, this may not be your film if have not enjoyed any of david lynch's other films or if you are just a casual film. also, you may wish to try blue velvet or elephant man if you are just exploring lynch works for the first time. others will know exactly what i'm talking about when i say this is david in all his glory. inland empire isn't exceptionally violent but it will disturb & take you out of your comfort zone. this is a 3 hour assault on the senses & you may even feel a bit drained when the credits begin to roll. having said that, i loved it but it helped me to have seen almost all of david's other work first to appreciate this one. this is perhaps one of his most avantguard, surreal pieces of expressionism to date. there is almost no middle ground here either. you will love it or you will hate it. however, be prepared that the film isn't formulaic in any sense of the word & all bets are off not unlike lost highway or mulholland drive. once the film takes off, many viewers may be left in the dust. as with just about any lynch films, there are no simple answers or explanations for the things that happen in the film & are best left up to the viewer's interpretation. laura dern gives one of the finest performances of her career. if there were any justic in this world, she would've received atleast an oscar nomination for this brave performance.

easily the best of mario bava
on September 10, 2007

boris karloff narrates this film which features three fantastic tales of the macabre. black sabbath is colorful, entertaining, & downright frightful. what more could one ask for in a horror film? many could even argue this is the best film of mario bava's career. i would dispute that either although he made many great films in his lifetime & inspired many a director. for those looking for a spooktacular flick, look no further. this one is very light on gore & violence but delivers on the suspense level. there is even a tad bit of dark humor displayed in fleeting moments making this one a sure keeper in your dvd collection. from the opening scene to the final clip, you won't be able to keep your eyes off the screen nor will your friends or family. if you absolutely can't wait for this be released next month, go ahead & buy the mario bava box set which features four other of his classics all for less than $50. while black sabbath is still my all-time favorite, the other four aren't a waste of time either. unpleasant dreams, my friends.

After years of waiting for a video release of any kind, the fans of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls have had their prayers answered with this fantastic double-disc set from Fox. The first disc presents a pristine letterboxed, anamorphically enhanced transfer of the film that offers eye-popping colors and razor-sharp detail. The audio is equally sharp, offering Dolby 2.0 stereo and mono mixes of the film; the stereo track has the edge, but the reams of campy dialogue and killer psych-pop tunes come through loud and clear on either track. The first disc also offers a pair of commentary tracks, one from co-writer Roger Ebert and the other featuring a collection of cast members. Ebert's track offers an all-around combination of historical detail, behind-the-scenes material, and critical perspective on the film, while the cast commentary offers plenty of dishy stories about the making of the film. The second disc offers just over an hour's worth of featurettes that discuss the making of the film, its context within the era, the film's catchy pop music score, its enduring cult following, and the somewhat controversial lesbian angle to its storyline. All of the segments are well-produced, offering plenty of interviews with cast and crew as well as authorities like Russ Meyer biographer Jimmy McDonough and various film critics. These featurettes also make imaginative use of computer graphics to bring the tales of the participants to life. Elsewhere on disc two, viewers can find "Z-Man's Far Out Party Favors" (a collection of trailers and screen tests) and a comprehensive series of image galleries that include stills, ad materials, and countless on-the-set photos. In short, this is the dream package that all Beyond the Valley of the Dolls fans have been waiting for and a must for anyone with a serious interest in classic cult cinema.

we knew eventually beyond the valley of the dolls would make it's way to dvd as most of the russ meyer films already had. ironically, it did make it but all of the other russ meyer films appear to be out of print at the moment. how can this be? anyway, let's thank our lucky stars for this release. not only is it affordable but it looks fantastic. in fact, way better than the vhs copies we've had for several years. trust me, you will never be able to get these songs out of your head or will you be able to compleely erase the ending of this film from your mind. be sure to check out all the extras too when you're done with the film. there is just too much fun here to pass up! let it be known however this is not a sequel nor a prequel to the infamous jacqueline sussan story named valley of the dolls which was released a couple of years later. no, this is far more original & even more campy. surprisngly, robert ebert had written the screenplay for this one too.

azam sends shivers down my spine....

this cd was actually recommended by a friend & she evidently knew my tastes better than i do. all i can say is wow! azam ali has one of the most remarkable voices i've ever heard & she has quite simply amazed me!! whether you love new age or world music shouldnt matter as elysium something for both worlds. oh, let's not forget the fans of electronica. azam ali has sent us a torpedo which straddles these worlds giving us the best from both sides. my complaint is the mere fact elysium is only nine tracks of bliss which lets us get our fill but leaves us a bit hungry. ok, fine. that's what a good cd is supposed to do but this material is beyond just good. it's great!!! whether she is singing in english or indian/ persian, you are in for the sonic thrill of your life. so here's hoping she continues making albums & that best buy will always carry them.

metal the way it should be
on September 10, 2007

if you are anything like me, you probably love heavy metal or simply don't mind heavy guitars. however, we are deeply saddened that most talented bands would rather waste their talent than make music which is enjoyable & listenable. in fact, most bands believe that true heavy metal music involved a great deal of growling or screaming. they couldn't be farther from the truth. within temptation has a terrific lead vocalist who actually has a beautiful voice which may remind one at times of evanescence, lacuna coil, or nightwish. yes, she actually has an incredibly strong voice which demands your undivided attention & gives us all hope that heavy metal is not on it's way out. ofcourse, the band can hold their own too! each song is a powerful statement that metal can be positive & shouldn't rely on unnecessary lyrics containing explicit lanaguage. within temptation has my vote for one of the most innovative metal bands to have come along in quite sometime & it's good to see bands like this this get the recognition they deserve. i only hope the united states will see more of this band in the near future & some of their earlier cds will be released domestically at considrably lower prices. silent force is indeed a force to be reckoned with.

sinead like you've only dreamt of...

ok, we all know she is a beautiful girl indeed who showed the world that hair wasn't necessarily all it takes for a woman to be beautiful. we also know she angered a few people by tearing the pope's picture but that's about all the general public knows. well, some may remember the top 40 track that garnered much radio play back in the early nineties. but that's it, right? sinead doesn't have enough material of her own to warrant a greatest hits album let alone an album of collaborations, right? wrong. just one listen to this cd & she will make you eat those words. anyone who hears this album will be determined to re-examine their own thoughts & seek out almost every album in this woman's catalog. yes, it is that good. while by no means a greatest hits album, this album rather focuses on the collaborations which have become increasingly difficult to find over the years but nevertheless were fantastic songs. whether you are listening to the stripped down folk sounds or the reggae-tinged melodies, you can't help but be impressed. not to mention she lends impressive vocal styles which will have you begging for more. if you are new to sinead or never really paid enough attention, this is the album to get. collaborations should be every serious music fans dream come true.

best techno/trance album i've ever bought

if you love to dance in the clubs or chill out with your friends from the club, you must already own this cd. great wall is full of electronic surprises guaranteed to give you your money's worth on two discs to boot. from the opening to the last track, you won't want to miss one single second of the fun paul oakenfold mixes as well as all the other known/unknown gems here. you won't find yourself skipping tracks even when your heart is set on hearing that bjork or madonna remix. in fact, you may find that there are so many other tracks which are just as addictive as the ones you are familiar with. i might even suggest oen definitely check out the motorcycle remix entitled as the rush comes. this is a very hard to find track but i've been listening to it for years on this album. happy listening techno fans!!!
