simply beautiful

i'm not quite sure why best buy categorizes this cd as a holiday cd but i hope that will not deter potential listeners. certainly the cd does have songs which could be construed as appropriate for the holidays depending on what personal beliefs or faith one may follow. shushan is simply a beautifully constructed album of classic hymns given siberry's royal treatment. this album unlike previous works tends to avoid the eclectic or idiosyncratic & focuses on simply being what it should aspire to be. shushan is comforting, inspiring, & uplifting in every sense of the word. you will surely want to purchase copies for family & friends in addition to one for yourself.

Nicolas Roeg's stylish psychological thriller Don't Look Back comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the theatrical trailer. This is a fine release from Paramount, and it is safe to say that the film has never looked better on home video.

all-time favorite thriller

there is nothing like a good thriller to curl up with & don't look now gets my vote. julei christie & donald sutherland are simply terrific & the films never fails to give me chills down my spine. nicolas roeg struck gold with this lesser known film in my opinion by taking an old du maurier short story & cranking out a full length nightmare. what makes don't look now so incredible is the sense of dread & fear it instill without the use of gore or excessive violence. the atmosphere here is enough to give one bad dreams for days & to even leave paranoid for a few nights. although films like this that have the incredible subdued quality & the twist ending are more popular today, it's a shame more folks didn't latdch on to the one back in the day. thank god for dvd!

The Monty Python troupe's irreverent religious comedy Life of Brian comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. Neither subtitles nor closed captions are accessible on this release. Supplemental materials are limited to a theatrical trailer and biographies of the Monty Python members. This is a decent disc from Anchor Bay, but true Python enthusiasts should seek out the Criterion release of the film that is loaded with extras.

monty python in all it's fine glory

although there is a somewhat superior version of this film o dvd released by criterion, you could save a ton of money if you just want the bare bones edition made available by anchor bay. fans of python in general will find themselves falling on their hands & knees with laughter. the greatest, wackiest story never told before remains one of the funniest films in history. i don't really think of this film as sacreligious. i think the film makers are simply poking fun at how quickly humans are apt to follow anyone for any reason. well, some don't really need to have a reason to seek leaders. brian, unfortunately isn't a leader but a very naughty boy as his mother will tell you.

Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg, who has long been fascinated by the ways new technology shapes and manipulates the human beings who believe they are its masters, is in familiar territory with eXistenZ, a futuristic thriller which combines elements of science fiction, horror and action-adventure. What is eXistenZ? According to the glossary Cronenberg put together for this film, it is a new organic game system that, when downloaded into humans, accesses their central nervous system, transporting them on a wild ride in and out of reality. What's more, it changes every time it is played, by adapting to the individual user -- you have to play the game to find out why you are playing the game. More than one person can plug into the same game and set out on a series of bizarre and surrealistic adventures together. The narrative takes place sometime in the near future, when game designers are worshipped as superstars and players can organically enter inside the games. Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the goddess among computer game designers whose latest invention, 'eXistenZ,' taps deeply into its users' fears and desires by blurring the boundaries between reality and escapism, is subject to an assassination attempt and forced to flee. Her sole ally is Ted Pikul (Jude Law), a novice security guard sworn to protect her. Persuading Ted to play the game, Allegra draws them both into a phantasmagoric world where existence ends and eXistenZ begins. Jennifer Jason Leigh, who is supposedly something of a computer nerd in real life, is hip and sexily alluring as Allegra Geller. When she and Pikul make love and are transported to the bizarre setting of a trout farm which has been converted to an assembly line production plant for games, they delve deeper into the dangerously intriguing game. Soon the forces of Anti-eXistenZialism will close in on Pikul and Allegra. eXistenZ marks the first time since Videodrome that Cronenberg has written a completely original screenplay. eXistenZ was inspired by the tribulations of the fugitive writer Salman Rushdie, author of the Satanic Verses. After interviewing the author for a magazine article in 1995, Cronenberg was struck with the idea of an artist who suddenly finds himself on a hit list for religious or philosophical reasons and is forced to go into hiding. The idea of a game came later on, for which he created a new vocabulary. According to Cronenberg, eXistenZ thematically connects to Crash, Videodrome, Naked Lunch and even M. Butterfly in terms of exploring the extent to which we create our own levels of reality and the idea of a creative act being dangerous to the creator. This is the second film on which Alliance Atlantis has been associated with Cronenberg, after Crash, which won the Special Jury Prize at the 1996 International Cannes Film Festival. On the occasion of the presentation of eXistenZ, Cronenberg received a Silver Bear for his outstanding artistic achievements at the 49th International Berlin Film Festival in 1999.

one of a kind

cronenberg's classic film existenz is definitely a must have for fans of sci-fi/fantasy & would likely appeal to gamers as well. this film is not a sequel to videodrome (another cronenberg classic) however. the film focuses on a game creator on the run after she discovers that someone wants her dead. the film viewer is still not sure whether the creator is trapped inside one of her games or if she actually is in great trouble. ofcourse, that's the fun concept behind the entire film. you can never be to sure of anyone or anything & everything is subject to change at some given point in the film. while not excessively violent, there are some scenes of carnage here or there. if you liked the matrix but were kind of put off by the special effects & wanted something a tad bit less formulaic, you might find yourself a great fan of existenz. i wish cronenberg had made a sequel to this one although i'm not sure what more you could do with the story.

Japanese filmmaker Wilson Yip directs the horror comedy movie Bio Zombie, in which a biological weapon has the power to turn people into zombies. Woody Invincible (Jordan Chan) and Crazy Bee (Sam Lee) are two kids who work at a video store in a mall. While driving their boss' car, they crash into an agent carrying the deadly weapon in a tainted soft drink. Putting him in the trunk, they go back to the mall. However, the dead guy gets loose and the mall eventually gets filled with zombies, with Woody, Bee, and their friend Rolls (Angela Tong Ying-Ying) trapped inside.

this is just too cool

if you want to impress your cool friends or you simply want something fun to watch, look no further. biozombie is easily the most delightful zomedy right next to shaun of the dead. fans of dawn of the dead or bill & ted's excellent adventure will most likely adore this film. it's funny, it's romantic, & it's even a bit tragic. the film involves two clueless asian teenagers & your typical day in the mall. throughout the course of one day, several unfortunate things will transpire leading up to a flesh hungry zombie attacking/infecting the entire shopping mall. forget the cheesy jacket cover & the b-movie title because this one is truly clever & deserves it's own cult following if it doesn't already have one.

shuggie rules

hands down, this is one of my favorite albums of the seventies which hardly anyone remembers. long before prince made his way into the music industry, shuggie otis was making psychedelic funk/r&b/rock which would've made many heads spin. many of you will probably remember strawberry letter 23 as covered by brothers johnson. while that is certainly an outstanding track even on otis' cd, there are so many other tracks here which are phenomenal examples of what music could be if musicians were a bit serious about their craft. shuggie otis blended several genres together to create the ultimate sonic experience for his listeners & information inspiration still sounds fantastic after all these years. if you love classic seventies music, you deserve to have this in your collection.

one of seal's absolute best

for some reason or another, this album didn't fair as well commercially as the first two but is equally astounding when compared to the previous efforts. seal maintains his charisma, deep thoughts, & softer than silk voce on human beings. my favorite tracks of his are usually the ones he does against an acoustic guitar but the whole album in it's entirety is worth your time. seal manages to captivate his fans with yet another round of political songs & love songs sure to please crowds. it's just a shame that more people haven't heard of this release or didn't have the chance to hear it on the radio stations. for examples of the album's greatness, check out the title track or colour.

one of the better recent horror films

ok, so the horror film industry isn't what it used to be. sadly, we keep hoping that a few films will give us hope that the genre may have a ghost's chance of surviving. unfortunately, there are few films to speak of with the exception of anything alejandra aja has made. this being the first film of his to make it's way into theatres in the states, i would say the kid has a promising career. the film takes the old grindhouse/slasher film formula & toys with it's audience for a good half of the film or more. you actually will believe just about everything you see before the twist ending. high tension pull out all the stops & give it's viewer what they are begging for. there is plenty of suspense, brutal violence, & several interesting death scenes. if you love the horror/suspense thriller, you wouldn't want to skip this one. should you enjoy high tension, also check out the hills have eyes remake. surprisingly, aja actually did better this time around than the original wes craven classic.

After years of obscurity, Just Jaeckin's R-rated adventure The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak is released in its American theatrical version to DVD. Newcomers on the block Severin Films deliver the goods with an interview and special extras that help explain the film's troubled history. Much of the backstory can be found in Jaeckin's interview segment of the disc, where he explains both his involvement and some of the cuts that were demanded of him when bringing his original French version of the film to the States. Also included is a steamy LUI magazine photo spread featuring star Tawny Kitaen in the film's sleek costumes in addition to the U.S. and international trailers. Technical specs are impressive on this disc, which includes a 2.0 Dolby Digital track accompanied by a stellar anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen picture. Severin also released the original cut in a separate release as Gwendoline, which reinstates almost 18 minutes of missing footage and adds more features to the disc's weight (including two 5.1 Dolby Digital audio tracks). To be fair, the extra running time actually doesn't heat up the screen as much as it adds to the silly vibe of the picture's first half, though one comparison of the two releases should give the viewer an easy idea on which to go with.

forget indiana jones

perils of gwendoline was said to one of the most expensive films to ever come from france. hmmm, how about that? the props & sets didn't look to be of a high budget to me but i still enjoyed this film anyway. the creator of emmanuelle & the story of O brought us this cute adventure in the early eighties. rather than picking up where he left off on those two films, jaeckin gives us a film with more of a jake speed or indiana jones atmosphere. tawn kitaen plays a nun who is searching for her missing father in the land of yik yak. she hires a man to lead her & a friend through the wild jungles in hopes of finding the lost father & a butterfly which is said to be extinct. if you were searching for this film, you probably already know the rest or have a basic understanding of the film. gwendoline is campy, cute, & silly all at once but it makes a great film if you are serving nachos with jalapeno velveeta sauce. have fun with this one.

classic bjork
on September 14, 2007

after leaving the quirky sugarcubes, bjork went completely solo & gave us her first masterful endeavor entitled debut. how appropriate. as always, bjork manages to keep us smiling while astonishing listeners with her unique sense of style. there is obviously no one else like her. she can go from a sweet whisper to a primal growl in just a matter of seconds. rather than sounding scratchy or unnerving, the sounds she makes are rather pleasant to be truthful. some of them even borderline being a bit relaxing. so as not to have her listeners falling asleep in the course of the album, she does the occasional upbeat song just to remind one that she is in complete control & one may never doubt her musical intentions. see why everyone has been talking about this amzing woman for years & start here if you have yet to buy any of her other works. if you already have this cd, continue spreading the word about bjork & move on to another cd in her discography. you simply can't go wrong with bjork.
