Outstanding Release!

I bought The Silent Circus when it came out, and to be honest I was pretty dissapointed with it. The reviews I had read seemed way off base, and the cd was just not what I was expecting. I skipped Alaska for this reason. I heard Colors in a friends car, and had to ask what was playing! I was really impressed by the skill showed by the musicians. It ended up being this cd, and I purchased it the next day. The band flows from one genre to another seamlessly. Songs like 'Sun of Nothing', and 'Ants of the Sky' run well past 10 minutes without getting repetitive or stale. You can definitely hear a Mike Patton influence on this cd, and that's probably why I like it as much as I do. I almost hesitate to call this a "metal" cd, because of the musical ground that is covered with this release, but it really is an outstanding release!

This is not your mother's AFI.

Blaqk Audio is comprised of members of AFI. Davey Havok's familiar voice is probably the only similarity to that band. Not that that's a bad thing. This album was mainly written by Jade Puget (guitar for AFI) and is electronic based. Synthesizers, drum machines and sampler loops. The vocals were written and sung by Davey Havok, and really works well over this poppy dance club style of music. Most of the songs on this cd are absolutely outstanding, and the people I've showed this to have positively responded. We've all bought tickets to see them when they come to town. It really is a great album, but a few of the songs fall a bit short, thus the 4 star review. If you're an extreme AFI fan, you'll want to pick this up just for that - but if you're into alt. club music (think Depeche Mode meets VNV Nation) you'll like this cd.

Strong Release
on August 23, 2007

The Con is the newest release by Canadian identical twins Tegan and Sara Quin. They stray slightly from their "folk rock" roots, and add a touch of slick production with some synthesizers and rather nice bass work from AFI's Hunter, and Matt Sharp who plays with Weezer and The Rentals. This is a welcome advancement to listeners like me, but some fans might object. The album opens with the short and quirky "I Was Married" which is very familiar. It serves to open the album, but with its lighthearted melody, and bouncy rhythm, almost fools the listener into thinking this will be the mood of the album. "Relief Next To Me" extinguishes those thoughts, and serves as a real testament toward what you're getting into. The lyrics are serious, and more mature than some past Tegan & Sara songs. There's a sense of atmosphere in this song that I haven't heard from these girls yet. Definitely a stand-out track. "Are You Ten Years Ago?" is my favorite track on the album, and coincidentally the farthest departure from their older work. It's a synth filled, electronica-pop song with many vocal overdubs, and an extremely catchy and likable chorus. "Nineteen" is another notable song, most people can relate to the feeling of ending a relationship with someone you once thought was so right for you. "Like O, Like H" fights very hard for "Best Song" and really gets close. It really builds you up, and then completely surprises you when it just drops out. This keeps the "predictability" out of the track. "Dark Come Soon" is a stripped down track with a simple acoustic guitar riff, and an honest subject. The twins say "Everything I say, I say to me first" and challenge you with "So what I lied? I lie to me too..." All in all, it's a must have for fans, and a recommendation to anyone who might be interested in something new. I've personally shown this to a few people, with very positive feedback. Check it out!

Always in the mood...

For this CD! This is a really stripped down album. There's not a bunch of fancy recording tricks, 62 tracks of backing noise, or thousands of session players. There's Damien. His Guitar. Backing vocals on some tracks by a delightful girl named Lisa Hannigan (she no longer plays with Damien Rice) a bit of cello, and the occasional drumset. The songs are raw, rough, and sometimes he misses a note or two. But the end product is a very real recording of some very powerful songs. If you've seen the movie "Closer" you'll recognize quite a few of the songs on this cd, as they used much of the instrumental passages in that movie's score. This is overall a pretty sad themed record, but I seem to always be in the mood to listen to it. And if I'm not, by the time Damien sings the chorus of the first song, I am.

I love this guy!

I was introduced to Peter Murphy (his music, not himself) in the spring of 2006. I haven't been able to get enough since then. He's got a huge catalog, and this CD is an excellent way to get a lot of his (poppier) great songs! Although, I can't seem to find any of his CD's here in Michigan Best Buy stores... Such a shame. I wouldn't even know what genre to place this album, but as the vocalist from the band Bauhaus, Peter is often called the "Godfather of Goth" I wouldn't use that label on this compilation. He's got amazing tone, an admirable range, and best of all, very interesting song arrangements. If you find yourself at a club that happens to play, uhh... "alternative" music, request something like The Sweetest Drop and see if you can stay still!

Their best yet.

If you only purchase one Lamb of God album, make it this one. While releases like 'New American Gospel' and 'As the Palaces Burn" have some great tracks, the production, and poor mastering will have your ears bleeding (and not in a good way) after you play the whole disk at volume 11. No bass, screeching guitars, piercing cymbals... Ashes of the wake shows Randy (vocals) growing as a vocalist, and has some stellar production. The rock solid timing (and interesting rhythms) of Chris and John is really showcased in this super clean record. Guitar Duo Willie and Mark tear it up (as usual) and paired with their rhythm section really break the mold of the "blast beat" metal band. Lamb of God is a killer metal act, and this is a great introduction record. I highly suggest picking up their other work as well.

Great Show!

As someone who watches little to no television, this show actually held my interest. Of course, I can never seem to catch it when it's aired, and so the DVD is perfect for me. While each show can stand on it's own, easily, there is an ongoing plot that is hard to follow when you only see 5 episodes per season on the original air date. This show really is something, and in case you didn't know, Hugh Laurie (the actor that plays Greg House) is a British actor, and is doing an "American" accent for the role of House. THAT's acting!
