The softer side of system.

I'm sure many will disagree, but that's the beauty of a lot of music. You make up what it means to you. For me this isn't really that big of a leap from System of a Down. Obviously Serj wrote and performed for that band, and it's audible on Elect the Dead. Not to mention that John Dolmayan (drummer for System) plays on this album, so you're getting a lot of the same grooves. Of course that's not a bad thing, but it's there. A lot of the songs will stick in your head for days, and there is some beautiful textures in this release. I can't give this a 5 star review because while crazy lyrics, and playful melodies worked in System of a Down, this album has a much more serious tone so a lyric like "find the evil little perpetrator and feed him to a hungry alligator" just doesn't feel right to me. But then after that line Serj erupts into a haunting chorus and makes up for it. He does this a few times on Elect the Dead. Overall it's definitely a solid effort, and fans of SOAD won't feel alienated, just as fans of Serj will feel some growth.

This is a holiday tradition!

The Marley's were dead to begin with. I have been watching this movie every year with my mom since I was a kid! The story is a classic, and while the addition of Muppets adds a lot of comic relief Michael Caine's performance as the stern and serious Scrooge makes sure that the film doesn't stray too far from it's roots. The Ghost of Christmas Present is of course my favorite of the three spirits that visit Mr. Scrooge, and most of the Muppets make an appearance in this movie. If you like "A Christmas Carol" or you're a big fan of the Muppets this will be a treat for you!
What's great about it: Timeless story, Michael Caine is an awesome actor.

DJ Pooh directs rapper Snoop Dogg in the comedy The Wash. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a trailer, interviews with the cast and crew, and a music video. This is a fine Trimark release for those in the market, but the film is also available in a two-pack that include the soundtrack for the movie.

Bought as a joke, but...

A movie featuring Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre didn't give me high hopes for a night of gripping acting, but as a Snoop Dogg fan, I bought it. I had anticipated a "so horrible it's hilarious" movie, but what I got was a ridiculous movie that was actually pretty watchable with a decent story. This won't win an award for anything, but with no expectations there's really no place to go but up! I liked it.
What's great about it: Funny movie, actually decent
What's not so great: None really, keep your expectations low!

Roadrunner recording artists bring their hardcore-style heavy metal home in this release which offers the band's sold out performance at the Worchester Palladium in its entirety, as well as a few other fan-friendly surprises. In addition to a breakneck song set that includes "Fixation on the Darkness," "Numbered Days," and "Life to the Lifeless," a one-hour retrospective documentary and a hearty helping of music videos by the band will keep the rock rolling in until the break of dawn.

An informative release

Set This World Ablaze has an incredibly detailed history of the band as a documentary, along with some hidden easter eggs about the greatest band in the entire universe "Mr. Robotron" There is also a 70 minute concert (which was mixed and mastered by Adam Dutkiewicz - guitar for KsE) as well as music videos. There is certainly a lot of video on this one disk, and at this price it's a must have for even casual fans of the band. The documentary (featuring members of Lamb of God, God Forbid, All That Remains, Shadows Fall, and more!) is funny, entertaining, and enlightening. The concert sounds amazing, and the guys have a lot of fun with it (as does the crowd, who knows they're being recorded!) The music videos are extras, and it never hurts to have them on a disk somewhere. In any case, if you're looking at this, you're somewhat interested in KsE, so go pick this up!

One of the best music DVD's I've seen!
on October 7, 2007

This is one of the best DVD's that a band has released that I've ever seen. On top of the fact that Lamb of God plays incredibly well live - you get to watch what they're like off the stage as well. The documentary follows the guys as they tour for their album "Ashes of the Wake" (check out my review for that album as well!) and the concert footage is all taken from a show at the Trocadero Theatre in Philadelphia (thus the title of the DVD/CD.) Without ruining it for anyone who hasn't seen this, this DVD shows you a very real look at what it's like to be on tour for a long time, with the same people on a bus. Be ready to see some footage that not very many bands would allow to be released on their movie. It's great!
What's great about it: Concert footage with a documentary running between songs!
What's not so great: Sadly, the film does eventually have an ending...

Surprise!

I saw Shiny Toy Guns almost two years ago, and I thought they were pretty good live. Then I started to hear 'Le Disko' - and never really put the two together. However the song was ridiculously catchy, and when I looked it up I realized this was the same band. So I bought this cd, and was pretty much floored. 'Shaken' is one of my favorite songs (and currently the ringer on my phone) and 'Starts With One' is another killer track. Of course 'Le Disko', and 'You Are the One' are both on here - and you've probably heard both of those. This album sounds more like 'You Are the One' so if you liked that song more than 'Le Disko' chances are you'd like this CD a lot. There's not a track on this release that I don't like.

With OK Computer, Radiohead created the classic modern concept album. Meeting People Is Easy is a band-commissioned documentary detailing the commercial and critical onslaught that ensued. The film expresses the alienation of five shy fellows coping with the capitalist, dollar-controlled world that so slathers them with acclaim. Punishing, existential montages display their inner turmoil. Mixed-media, artistically stylized segments present the band's disaffection. If things sometimes aren't focused, it's not a flaw in the encoding of the DVD; it's Radiohead's worldview. Whether the band is giving interviews or performing live, or director Grant Gee is inserting strange sound effects, the audio is a fine, moody mix. All in all, the sound is a bursting, surly beast, often disorienting, and always interesting. The Scott Walker song about 20 minutes into the film is a perfect example of the clean audio presented throughout. There are zero supplemental features, and anyone who has seen the band's minimalist product packaging probably can figure out why. On the main menu, viewers are told in large letters, "You are a target audience" -- a conceit worthy of Michael Stipe that continues the band-as-outsiders motif. This sociopolitical theme continues in the implementation of the DVD itself; it is one big chapter, making it very hard to find specific scenes in the film. Radiohead: Meeting People Is Easy is an interesting, claustrophobic experience on DVD; if it puts viewers to sleep, it's a testament to the band's sensibilities.

Certain people would love this!

I love Radiohead. I watched this documentary on Sundance channel years ago, and I was captivated! Grant Gee does an excellent job with this film, and the audio is almost just as good. Ominous, creepy tones play under interviews with a seemingly miserable band. Some concert footage is shown, not usually an entire song at a time. News footage and articles are shown, and it really follows a band as they are triumphed as the "best band" and how they react to it. Very honest dialogue, and great visuals. I wouldn't imagine very many people will watch this unless they are fans of Radiohead, but even if you're just interested in the music business you should check this out.
What's great about it: Exceptionally artful documentary about what some call "the greatest band in the world."
What's not so great: If you're not interested in Radiohead, this could be the most boring video you've ever watched.

Great concert DVD.

This is just a straight up concert performance DVD. There are some hidden short films by the guys in the band that are very strange on this disk, and they interview fans in the bonus features. Overall this is a well shot, high energy show that AFI plays very well on. Definitely a must have for the AFI fan out there. The sound is well recorded and mixed, sounds excellent on a good surround system. The picture (albeit a bit grainy at times, but it looks artful - so no complaints here) is colorful and sharp!

I liked it...

If I recall correctly, I listened to this album somewhere around 5 or 6 times the day I bought it. The problem with this CD is that some of the songs are so good, that a few of the other songs just don't compare. 'How I Disappear' and 'Sleep' are some of the best songs they've ever put out, and 'Cancer' is a brutally honest look at what it's about. (Also a really strange feeling if you've seen them perform it live) There is some growth from "Three Cheers.." to this CD, and as the other reviewer says, it's about the music on this release. And they do quite a job of it. The songwriting and arrangements are great.

Relief!

I would consider myself a large fan of HIM. But let's be honest with ourselves, 'Dark Light' was far from the album we were anticipating. After their American exposure, I wasn't really expecting much from Venus Doom either. Luckily the CD didn't disappoint! I've been listening to this in the car for the last couple of days, and it's a pretty catchy cd. It's easily not their best work, but at least they improved over their last album. I do recommend this cd. Especially for HIM fans.
