Unassuming but powerful mouse that does tricks
on September 16, 2020
Posted by: daytonadan

I know what you are thinking. What? Another mouse? What can it possibly do that my current mouse does not already do.
Well as it turns out, quite a lot, despite its somewhat ordinary appearance -- a compact but ergonomic black-on-black color scheme whose only unusual feature in a shiny metal scroll wheel.
Speaking of which, the scroll wheel is somewhat special, despite being a common accessory on nearly every mouse these days. The one on the MX Anywhere 3 is very different in several ways. The first is simply the way it looks. Instead of smooth plastic or rubberized wheel, this one is is a finely carved bit of gleaming metal with fine grooves etched in for fingertip traction. Even more surprising is a button behind the scroll wheel that changes how it feels when you scroll. Pretty slick. If you prefer the "ratchet" feel, with little bumps as you scroll. It does that. But if you are more inclined toward a super smooth roll and scroll, it does that too. The button switches back and forth between those two options with just a touch. Finally, there is a third new function that affects what happens when you scroll. Go slow and the scroll is normal, albeit very precise. But spin the wheel fast and it scrolls super fast, what Logitech calls "MagSpeed."
All this is customizable, of course, using the Logitech Options software, which you must download if you do not already have it. This also makes it possible to correctly setup the mouse and any existing Logitech wireless keyboard you might have. A single unified USB receiver that comes with the mouse will control all such devices. No need for a separate receiver for each device.
Oh, and a few more bonuses. The mouse can be setup as a normal 2.4 ghz wireless device or Bluetooth. It's nice to have that option. And it's rechargeable, via an included USB C cable. No more AA batteries to worry about. A 1 minute charge will last three hours. A full charge: 70 days. A light behind the wheel warns you if the battery is low.
Now comes the "anywhere" part of this new mouse. As the name implies, it is designed to be used anywhere, on any surface (including glass) with up to three different computers at once, or individually. A button on the bottom of the mouse allows you to pair it with each one. But even more impressive is the new "flow" control, which allows you to use the mouse with three computers at the same time. Say you want to drag a file or folder from the desktop of one computer to your laptop. Yep, you can do that with the MX Anywhere 3. You have to set this up first using the software but it is very handy.
Finally, there are a couple of buttons on the left side, which do different things depending on what application you are using. By default, when used with the scroll wheel, they can control horizontal scrolling. In a browser, you can go backwards and forward to web pages you have viewed. All this is fully customizable of course. The options are nearly endless.
In the end, this is a very capable mouse and may be well worth the cost if you need or desire any of the special capabilities built into this thing.

Very capable camera for being so inexpensive
on August 11, 2020

from Daytona
If you are looking for an inexpensive, easy to set up and easy to use home wi-fi security camera, it's hrd to go wrong with the Lorex W261AS.
I have tried several devices of this type and this was the easiest one yet, at least in terms of initial setup. So easy, in fact, I did not really even need to read the instructions. Download the app, create an account, plug in the camera, follow the on screen prompts to add a camera password and connect to your wi-fi network. You will be up and running in a few minutes.
The camera, like most of this type, is managed with a smart phone app, Lorex Home. It gives you options on when to record, whether to trigger video recording with a motion sensor or person sensor, whether to send you alerts and overall sensitivity, etc. Very impressive.
You can even add Alexa or Google support, but in the case of Alexa, will have enable the Lorex Home skill first in the Alexa app. Then add device.. After that you can issue voice commands to turn on and view whats going on with the camera using any Alexa device. Of course you also view and record from anywhere using the Lorex Home app.
The indoor-only camera has a very wide angle lens so can cover almost every corner of any room. But the downside to this is details drop away pretty quickly the further you are from the camera. So if you are hoping to ID a burglar robbing your house, you better hope he or she walks close to the camera. You also better hope that person does not decide to steal the camera too, since that is where all video is stored. Because this is relatively cheap camera, there is no cloud storage. Video goes instead to an included onboard 16BG micro SD card, which should hold about 2 hours worth of footage. The camera will accommodate cards up to 256GB (Class 10) if you need more storage space. The upside to this there are no cloud stoarge fees to worry about.
Video is recorded in HD (1080p) but you can opt to stream at standard def if your wi-fi bandwidth is limited or you do not want to use a lot of data when reviewing video remotely using your phone. A built in microphone also allows for two-way audio or audio monitoring. Night vision mode also is supported to catch those creeping around in the dark.
Lorex gives you lots of mounting options, from simply placing the camera on a table or countertop to mounting it on the wall or ceiling. Just remember this camera requires AC power (A USB charger and cord are included). So that may limit where you can put it.. The camera stand is magnetic so will stick to the included round steel plate that is designed for wall and ceiling mounts. It can be attached with the included two sided tape or screws.
Lorex makes lots of surveillance camera and systems, all of them much more expensive and sophisticated than this one. But despite its low cost, this one probably will do just about everything you will need. Just be prepared to do a little extra work to figure out how to do everything.
Unlike the initial setup, I found it difficult to get to essential settings for determining when and how the camera activates automatically. They are buried pretty deep in the menu. (hint: look under notifications) Once you find them, however, you have the ability to set the camera to turn on only when you are away (geofencing) and even what times of the day or night it should trip, since you don't want it going off all the time when you are at home and simply wandering around the house.
.
You can even set which zones within the overall view to watch so, for example, you can remove floor areas so pets do not trip the camera at night.
The biggest downside is that you must monitor how much of your onboard storage is being used by video and audio recordings and manually delete individual recordings to free up space. If that turns into a big chore, it might make sense to buy an SD card with more capacity so you don't have do the cleaning operations as often.
Except for the somewhat cumbersome software setup process this is a very good little camera and well worth the modest price.

Very comfortable, good sound, but pricey

I guess you have to give Microsoft credit. The company never stops trying to make hardware that rivals products made by competitors, many of whom are mostly in the hardware business. Which Microsoft is not. Hence there have been some notable flops along the way.
Anybody remember the Zune digital music player? Microsoft's Lumia cell phone? Probably not.
Undaunted, Microsoft is at again, this time with its Surface branded wireless earbuds, which seems odd, since isn't Surface a tablet? Not a music device? But hey, Microsoft no longer makes any music devices. So these are Surface earbuds. And to be fair, they are designed to work with the Surface tablets and MS software (voice control, via Cortana) , although I am not sure how many people will use them that way.
Most people use earbuds for music (and the occasional phone call) so that's the one area where manufacturers must excel to succeed. And fortunately for Microsoft, the Surface earbuds do very well in this regard.
The sound quality is far better than some earbuds I have used, especially using some of the EQ settings that come with the Surface Audio app. The default FLAT settings produce with bright clean highs, and adequate, if not spectacular midranges. The low frequencies are also acceptable. if unremarkable.
But once I switched to the POP EQ setting, I was amazed how much better these sounded. Midrange and low frequencies were much stronger, providing a much fuller overall sound. Everybody's preferences here are very subjective however, so try them all to find the one that sounds best to you.
These are no match for over good over the ear earphones and have no noise cancelling (which they should at this price). So are not a good choice in noisy environments.
Still, t there are good reasons to put the Surface earbuds on your shopping list.
First and foremost is comfort. These ear buds use a unique flat oblong ear pieces that are supposed to be a lot more comfortable than the kind you have to jam inside your ear canal. Three different sizes are provided (small, medium and large) and the soft rubberized pieces can be swapped out fairly easily. Because of the design, these rest inside the ear but mostly outside of the ear canal.
I have yet to find an earbud that I thought was comfortable so I was eager to try this one out. The result: They are much better than all the others I have tried. But even using the smallest earpiece I found they became uncomfortable after an hour or so because the fit is still pretty snug. That may be good for those who use them while exercising since they are unlikely to fall out. But not so much for long term comfort. Still, most other earbuds are far worse in the comfort department so this is a step in the right direction. Perhaps one could get used to them in time.
Be aware that placement is critical to getting the best music quality so take some time to make sure you've positioned them correctly in the ear. The Surface Audio app recommended by Microsoft to use with the earbuds has a little video that explains how best to do this.
Build quality seems quite good, if you can get past the odd circular plastic design that makes them look more like big white earrings than earbuds. One assumes the engineers decided they had to look totally different from the ones made by that other company that starts with an A. For what it is worth, the design makes them easy to grip and the big flat circular surface makes the touch controls easy and intuitive.
Swipe up and down on the right earpiece to control for volume, back and forth on the left for skipping tracks. Tapping either one does different things, like stopping and restarting tracks.. A long press brings up the digital assistant (you get to to choose between Cortana, Google, Siri, Bixby or Alexa) I have found fussy or unworkable touch controls to be a big problem on other brands of earbuds so Microsoft gets kudos for getting this right,
When not in use, the buds rest in small charger that resembles a pillbox. You get a USB A to USB C cable but no charger so you better have one of those if you want to keep these charged up (Pretty inexcusable at this price). Microsoft says they go up to 8 hours on a charge, which should be plenty for most folks.
The buds are magnetically keyed to one side of the case or the other. So if you try to put them in the wrong way, they will be magnetically pushed out and the indicator light will glow red. Otherwise, it blinks white when charging and solid white when fully charged.
Pairing is relatively simple and does NOT require an app, thankfully. Put your music device in pairing mode, the buds in the case and press the physical button on the bottom of the pillbox charger. I even tried this on an ancient iPod touch and it worked just fine.
Ironically, this method actually worked better than than using Surface Audio app, which is what Microsoft recommends in the startup instructions. The app failed to find the buds and I had to pair them manually with the phone.
Overall, this is a good choice for anyone in search of earbuds that are more comfortable than most that have come before it and provide pretty decent sound quality and functionality.

Stylish, functional,inexpensive but cheaply made

If you are one of those people who needs your mouse to make a fashion statement, Logitech has you covered.
The new Fresh Clicks design collection includes four low-cost pop-art designs that are smaller than a standard mouse but provide all the same basic functionality. That means two buttons and scroll wheel as well as a wireless USB connection. The transmitter is included, stored away inside the mouse next to the battery when traveling.
The sides and scroll wheel both are covered with a soft rubberized coating for good grip.
This geometric teal is arguably the most conservative of the bunch. Built around a two-tone white and teal color scheme, it features a geometric cross hatch on top. Other designs include a wild multi-color swirl (Cosmic Play), pop art flowers (Spring Meadow) or a purple to hot pink color fade (Blue Blush).
They all run on a single AA battery (included) which is supposed to last a year. Hard to complain about that.
One nice touch is the packaging, which appears to be the usual impossible to open heavy plastic molded clamshell. But look closely in the back and you'll discover pre perforated panel that pops open with just a light pull. Easy!
If you have had Logitech mice in the past, you know what to expect from this one. It has the same smooth accurate tracking, comfortable scroll and decent hand fit, assuming you have medium to small hands. This is a pretty small mouse, designed to be carried around in your pocket.
Be aware this is a low cost mouse, so it has a bare-bones build quality that reflects that. Which is to say it is made of very light, molded plastic. There is no heft to it all, which some prefer for better balance and more accurate tracking. It gets the job done but don't expect to be wowed by the construction or any extra functionality. It just does the essentials.
The only issue I had was getting my new mouse to work with my old Logitech unified receiver, which I was using with another Logitech mouse and keyboard. It turns out you need to run the Logitech unifying software and follow the on screen instructions to pair the receiver with the new mouse. . Pretty simple. You have to go the Logitech Web site to get it if you do not already have it. (Not included with the package). Check the downloads section.
Otherwise, its a decent low- end mouse for the money, especially if you yearn to for something small with a little more fashion sense.

Unremarkable old tech device
on April 18, 2020
Posted by: daytonadan

I know what you are thinking. A CD player? In this day and age? Are you crazy?
Well, you certainly have to be old school to go this route. Many folks younger than 40 probably regard this bulky gadget as something akin to a dial telephone, assuming they even know what that is.
Oh, sure. Memorex has updated it a little -- adding Bluetooth so you can stream your dusty old CD colletion to your wireless speakers or headphones. (if you can get to work... more on that later.) But that's about the only thing that feels new about this portable Memorex CD Music player. Everything else screams the 1990s.
Which is to say, this is a very bare bones affair. Cheap plastic construction. A small black and white LCD display on top that is pretty much impossible to see most of the time since it is not backlit. Tiny mechanical push buttons to control the mechanical battery-powered motor that drives the CD (two no-name AAs included) . Tiny text on the controls that make them impossible to see. All wrapped in a hideous black and dayglo green color scheme that only the Grinch could love. Nearly invisible slide controls on side open the device so you can insert and remove the CD and activate a bass boost system, which did not seem to do much of anything.
It's fairly lightweight at least. No much bigger around than the a music CD itself. And about an inch thick. But compared to a modern memory-chip based music players, it is laughably huge. Not something you would ever take on a jog, or even out of the house. Just way too big. Those who want to try, however, will be happy to know there is a 100 second skip protection built in! (Recall this a mechanical device and prone to skipping when being bounced around, which this feature is supposed to remedy.)
If you still have music CDs, it would be far easier to simply rip them into MP3s using your computer and dump the music onto a compact memory-chip based player (or cell phone) . Or easier yet, use a streaming service to listen to the same music. Why mess with this archaic mechanism?
Well, how about better music quality? You might think so since this music is coming directly off the original CD, in all its uncompressed high bit rate glory. But I didn't find the sound any better than compressed MP3s or a streaming version of the same content. Even worse, the only "new" feature, the aforementioned Bluetooth, proved to be flaky at best. It was difficult to set up (look for the tiny ant-sized flashing icon to pair!) and would sometimes cut out mid-song for no reason.
About the only good thing you can say about this it does not cost much and it works if all you want to do is listen to an old CD collection in the old school way. One song after another, or skipping the ones you do not like. Plug-in ear buds with lightweight ribbon wire are included for those with no bluetooth speakers or headphones. Or you can use your own corded headphones.
This is truly a blast from past. And not a great one at that. For nostalgia buffs only.

Best of breed cordless vac. Powerful and quiet
on March 31, 2020
Posted by: daytonadan
from Daytona
Dyson is a company not known for making radical changes in the design of its products.
The company puts a lot of effort into producing elegant functional products. So as new models emerge, it is usually all about refinement and nuance.
So it's no surprise that Dyson's new V11 Origin cordless vac reflects that approach.
At first glance, it may not look much different from the models that came before it. A big stylized motor housing with clear dirt chamber, A long extension tube painted in Dyson's trademark hot rod colors (a reddish purple in this case) which attaches to a well-designed powerhead. Just pull the trigger to make it go.
But look more closely and you will see there are quite a few improvements. The dirt chamber is much larger than some earlier models so you empty less, a big plus. The motor is a new, and noticeably more powerful version that includes a slick new baclklit control panel to show motor speed, charging status and alert you to problems with the filter and clogging. And most notable of all, this Dyson has a new brain that tells the motor to automatically change speeds on the fly to deal with different conditions.
Some earlier models relied on a manual three-speed slide switch. The Origin has three settings too but one of them is the new AUTO mode, which allows the motor decide how fast it should run based on what's going on a floor level. The other two, for those who prefer the manual approach, is the slowest ECO setting for best battery life or the full time fast mode, BOOST, for really tough jobs. Changing speeds is done a single push button instead of a slide switch.
Speaking of the motor, the company says this vac has the most powerful one it makes, and I believe it. I have a couple of cats that shed more cat hair than one would think possible. The new "Dyson Hyperdymium," which runs up to 125,000 RPM, did a great job of getting that off bare floors and carpets. And made short work of scattered kitty litter and kibbles, which means it sucked them up instead of scattering them around. Perhaps most amazing of all, it is a bit quieter than before.
Which is not to say it is perfect, As before, this Dyson works best, or is at least easier to use, on hard floors of all types. Easy to push. Great suction. Perfect. Carpet with anything beyond a very low pile, requires MUCH more effort since the motor powers up (on AUTO at least) increasing the drag considerably. Yes, it still cleans well, much better than you might expect for a cordless vac. But it it is a lot more work . Those who are not up for that kind of workout would be well advised to opt for the slower ECO mode, which makes for an easier push -- while perhaps not cleaning quite as well.
Dust? Not with the Origin. Dyson's excellent filtration system means vac day is a mostly dust-free affair. You can keep it that way by making sure the single reusable filter gets a regular cleaning under running water. If you forget, the control panel will remind you.
All in all, it's a pretty versatile vac. In addition to normal chores, you can switch up the configuration to clean stairs, furniture or car interiors. Just remove the extension tube and attach the powerhead directly to the motor. Or remove that and plug in the (included ) unpowered crevice tool or spot brush.
The attachments are designed to attach to the included wall mount, which doubles as a charging dock for the vac. Dyson even gives you the screws and anchors to mount it. Or if you prefer, you can keep the charger separate and manually plug in the vac when the time comes for charging. That takes about 3 hours if the batteries are very low. Run time is advertised as 60 minutes but that is in ECO mode. Expect less using AUTO or BOOST power settings.
Overall cleaning performance is about as good as it gets for a cordless vac. Dyson's claims it has the power of a corded vac and I would be hard pressed to dispute that. It certainly has more power than previous generation models. But I still have to admit that if you have a house full of wall to wall carpet, a corded vac is much less work since they are all designed to glide easily over carpet.
If you have the money, this one is a winner. Four stars. It would have been five but for the extra effort required to vac carpets.

Great on the PC, just OK on game consoles
on January 12, 2020
Posted by: daytonadan
from Daytona
Lots of headphones claim to provide surround sound but few can boast the kind of sonic magic managed by the Corsair HS45, a least when when listening to certain content.
You have to jump through some hoops to get there, since surround mode only works on a PC and and you must download special software and use the a special USB attachment (included) to realize the headphones' full potential.
But once all that is in place, the sound quality is amazingly good, especially in 7.1 surround mode. (Plain old stereo is supported but does not sound as good.) The depth and clarity and separation provided by this surround sound process was beyond my expectations for headphones that are so modestly priced.
Be aware, however, you will NOT get this souped up sound quality if you are simply plugging the headphones into your game console controller. In that mode, these thing are OK. About on par with similar priced headphones that plug into controllers. Adequate but unremarkable.
The game console is where I first used these headphones and I was not overly impressed, initially. Which is perhaps why I was surprised by how much better they sounded once I hooked them up to my PC.... at least when listening like music.
What about PC gaming? I am not sure because my computer lacks the horsepower for most PC games. But there are presets for a big collection of current games.
As for movies, streaming via the PC: The sound quality was quite good but not the not as good as they sound with music. Which is a little surprising since these are sold as gaming headphones. Go figure.
For generic content, the iCue software package offers a bunch of EQ presets from "Pure Direct" to "Movie Theater" to "Bass Boost." I liked the Movie Theater mode best since it boosted the low and mid-range frequencies. Very solid sound. But you can also create your own EQ settings.
As for the overall ergonomics of the headphones, they are , again, adequate but unremarkable. Mostly black plastic construction (or "carbon" as the Corsair calls it) with soft nylon mesh covering the cups for the ears and a nice cushy pad on top adjustable band which rests on your head. Comfortable but not the most comfortable headphones I have ever used. And if you wear glasses, as I do, there is a good bit rub- squeak from the ear pads on certain frames.
A detachable boom mic, with end-to-end flexibility, plugs into the left ear cup (or you can leave it off if you are not into the kind of gaming that requires it.) Unlike most other gaming headphones, the controls are on the headphones themselves, not on the cord that plugs into the controller or PC. A wheel type volume control and on/off button for the mic are on the left ear piece.
The cord that plugs into the PC or game console controller is an extra long, six feet. Great for the PC, which may be some distance away, but all that extra cord t just gets in the way when using a gaming console controller.
Overall, though, these are good headphones for the money, providing decent (sometimes excellent) sound at a good price.

Lacks power for serious work, but an OK design
on December 17, 2019
Posted by: daytonadan
from Daytona
Add one more tool to the list of those going cordless. The shop vac. In this case, the Hoover ONE PWR System Utility Vac, which promises wet/dry versatility and and the ability to do big shop cleanup jobs without the cord.
As with many of these battery powered devices, the promise is only partially delivered -- at least compared to higher-powered brethren that plug into the wall. The ONE PWR vac will do the job sometimes, but it lacks the suction power of many corded models and is severely limited by just 20-30 minutes of go-time before the battery dies.
That's long enough to do most quick cleanup jobs but not enough do large scale projects, especially since it takes about three hours to recharge the somewhat anemic 20-volt, 4 amp lithium-ion battery.(Which can be used on a big family of ONE PWR tools)
Given the PWR ONE vac's high price, I was also disappointed by the dearth of included attachments -- just an 8-inch wide general purpose sweeper and a crevice tool. And even those are limited by some odd design choices.
The sweeper tool, for example has large notches all the way around the bottom, where it makes contact with whatever you are trying to clean. And therefore cannot make a tight seal, which makes it nearly worthless for common jobs like vacuuming the carpets in your car, truck or SUV. The already limited power of the vac is further reduced by this design, and therefore the vac can't really pick up ground in dirt or sand. Just bigger lighter stuff on the surface.
If you want to pick up loose dirt on a concrete floor, other hard surface, or sawdust, or spilled kitty liter, the ONE PWR vac delivers. Anything else, eh, it may or may not work. Leaf litter, for example, is a no-go except in very limited quantities. And even then I found the dried leaves tended to clog up the extension wand between the sweep attachment and the hose leading to the vac's dirt chamber. Not enough power to get them through. Pretty disappointing.
If you can live with those shortcomings, this vac is otherwise mostly well designed. The main canister has big wheels on the side and small spinner type wheels front and back, which makes it very maneuverable. Big handles on both ends make it easy to pick up and empty when the cleanup job is done.
It comes with a long, rather stiff plastic hose and two friction-fit extensions. When put together with the sweeper attachment, the two extensions are about the right height for vacuuming the floor, while standing up.
Elastic plastic loops on the top of the unit are for storing the extensions when not in use but are a bit of a pain. It's Hard to get the pieces in and out of them
Like most shop vacs, the top is held on with four latches, which makes it easy to remove when emptying. The motor is top mounted and battery slides in conveniently from the top. And the battery has a push-to-test button on top so you can determine remaining power. (A charger is included)
The big depression in the top of the lid is for storing the hose when not in use, a good idea since it makes the unit more compact and easier to store.
Overall, it's a decent design and adequate for small jobs that involve picking up lightweight debris. If you have more heavy duty work to do, look elsewhere. Nearly every corded model is much less expensive, has much more power and does not suffer from the limited run time of this one.

Works best on old PCs with mechanical hard drives
on November 25, 2019
Posted by: daytonadan
from Daytona
AVG TuneUp is one of many software packages out there that promise to breath new life into older PCs by getting rid of the junk that slows them down.
That would be a raft of programs that run in background, but you may not even know are there, tons of old unused files on your hard drive and an even larger of number of small graphics from web sites you visit in your day to day Web browsing.
If you have an older PC that sill uses a mechanical hard drive (vs the newer and much faster solid state drives, or SSDs) it may be well worth the investment. This collection of junk truly does bog everything down. So do errors in the drive itself. AVG Tune fixes them all in pretty sort order without a lot of drama.
It will also rid your registry -- which gets more bloated with every passing day -- of similar bits of old unused stuff, all of which will make your PC boot faster, launch programs more quickly and generally give you more speed in the course of daily activity. Plus it removes pesky tracking cookies.
The differences can be dramatic in very old PCs where no routine maintenance has ever been done to fix any of these problems. Or barely noticeable at all on modern PCs with very fast SSDs.
Setup is fairly simple and automatic. AVG TuneUp does a quick scan once it is loaded and tells you exactly how many problems it has found. These are broken down into four categories called Maintenance, Speed up. Free up space and Fix problems. In each are you can pick and choose what you want the program to do, in terms of fixing issues. Which is good since you may not, for example, want to turn off background programs (in Speed Up section) that are slowing down your PC. Cause you use em all the time and there probably want them running in background.
In the old days, programs that cleaned old registry items could be dangerous since they might erase something important, making a program, or the PC, unusable. AVG seems to have solved this problem. It found more than 500 problems in my registry and fixed them all with no ill effects.
One other bonus. AVG TuneUp will take a look at your installed programs and advise you when updates are available -- at least among a list of commonly used ones . Better yet, it will install those updates for you.
All this can be done regularly by the user or, if you are lazy, you can set the program to do automatic maintenance.
One license is good for one year on 5 PCs,phones and tablets in your household (PC, MAC, Android) . AVG Tuneup worked fine on my two Intel PCs but seemed to have issues with an AMD Ryzen based laptop. Those are not widely used though so this should not be a concern for most users.
Overall, AVG Cleanup is a inexpensive and easy way to rid your devices of unwanted junk and maybe even make then run a faster and/or more smoothly. But it's most useful on older PCs with regular old HDDs.

Sturdy race track for mice with cool lighting
on November 23, 2019
Posted by: daytonadan

If you are a avid computer gamer looking for another gadget to trick out your rig, this just might be the ticket: The Lexip B5 Touchcontrol Mousepad.
The French company best known for making gaming mice now makes a racetrack for them to run on. And even better, the edges glow with all the colors of the rainbow. It's the perfect accessory for the avid gamer who has already tricked out his or her gaming PC with lights.
The big appeal to gamers, aside from the cool lighting, is the mousepad surface: a hard black textured affair that allows you to run the mouse around with the least resistance possible, ie, very fast.
That's essential in the gaming world, where speed is the difference between winning and losing.
Unlike most mouse pads, it is pretty huge to boot, about 10 by 14 inches. So there is plenty of room maneuver without running off the pad.
The LED lighting system (power provided by one of your computer's USB ports) can produce one of seven solid colors. Just touch the white fingerprint at the top of the pad to cycle through the choices. There also are several multicolor animated modes, in which the lights either pulse or race around clear plastic outside edge. Perhaps too distracting while gaming but cool the rest of the time. (You can turn it off too.)
Unlike the soft spongy mousepads some people use, this is a very sturdy ridge device, with an integrated metal frame and big rubber feet to mask sure it stays put. But this mousepad is also a bit clunky, with a big black metal block at the top of the pad where the fabric wrapped USB cord connects. It's a little too easy to crash your mouse into it when making fast gaming moves. Not the most elegant design.
My biggest gripe is the brightly lit edges of the pad are sharp, instead of rounded as they should be, for comfort. If your hand or arm hangs off the edge of the pad, the sharp edge can cut into it. Not good.
In the end, this pretty pricey for a mouse pad. But if your gaming rig is all about style and speed, it's hard to go wrong with this one.

I hate I bought this
By TechLover12
Do NOT buy, this item worked great for the first 5 to 6 months then the main adapter stopped working and would not power on. I called customer service who advised me that I would have to pay to ship it back to get a repacement. I thought it was stupid but I did it anyway. It took almost a month to get the replacement and now the replacement has gone out within less than 4 months. I hate that I bought this thing. If I could give this thing 0 stars, I would.

I agree there is an issue of reliability to be considered here. The first set of these I bought lasted four or five years before they suddenly died, a few months apart, as yours did. They worked great until they quit for no apparent reason. I bought a replacement set. One of them died in a few weeks. You might get lucky. You might not. Quality control seems a to be a problem with this company.

Problems updating the map
By Kenny
We have had Garmin Nuvi's before, and love them. I bought this one today (June 26), and it worked right out of the box. But then I went through the online download process through Garmin Express to get the latest map, it appeared to successfully download, but got the message "There was an error installing the update." And now the Nuvi says the map is locked! I tried several more downloads, and kept getting the same error. I will try to contact Garmin tech support, and if they can't help me I will have to return it.

Problem may be Garmin USB cable
December 8, 2016
I had a raft of problems updating maps for many years. It would stop mid update. Lose connection between computer and the GPS. On offf on off. For no apparent reason. Then the map would be corrupt. After many years, I finally discovered the problem was a defective USB cable, the one that came with the Garmin! Hard to imagine how one of these could go bad but obviously a broken or lose connection somewhere inside the cable (defect in manufacturing) , where it is invisible. When I switched to another USB cable, I never had another problem. If you have this issue, throw away the Garmin cable and your problem will be solved.

My 6 year old nuvi is better than this.
By zhadum
I decided to get a new Garmin because my old model didn't have life- time maps. The avoidances on this model don't work well. I had selected to avoid unpaved roads. Not only did this Garmin try to get me to turn on to every unpaved road from my home to my destination. It also wanted me to make a U turn to take a unpaved road. Also it's guidance isn't very good, it had me take a off ramp only to have me immediately get right back on the same highway that I just got off. Also it tried to get me to cross several bridges that haven't been there in years. I contacted technical support and was told that a new map update was released and that would help with the problems so I downloaded the update which said that it would take 3 hours to update but instead it ended up taking 48 straight hours to download the update.

Fast internet essential for map updates
December 18, 2016
If it took that long for you to update maps, you must have dial-up speed internet, ie, less than 1MB per second. That's just not usable in my view but some people limp along on it. But since these mapset updates on the order of about 3 gigabytes in size, it will take forever to download them at that speed. Buyers should be aware that doing map updates is not very practical if you have low speed internet at home.

Great Laptop for beginner
By MikeV
This laptop is very good design and light weight. Internal battery last for a period of time if full charge. Doesn't produce a lot of heat, you barely feel it. Very quite laptop. I gave it 3 stars due to lack of 5Ghz wifi. My 6 yrs old sony vaio even have 5Ghz and this 2016 Lenovo doesn't ?. I just don't understand why this IBM company is doing this. I did a lot of research and found out that IBM puts only 2.4 Ghz card to the laptop. I ended up buying an external wireless adapter to get 5Ghz. Hope this help...Good luck.

Does support 5ghz
January 4, 2017
.....but only if you go into the wireless adapter settings and turn it on. I too was puzzled why wireless connection was so slow. I have no idea why the stock configuration is with 5ghz turned off but it was. Once I fixed that, I got a strong 430mbs connections with my AC wireless router. On 2.4mghz, it was 150 max I think. Look for the advanced properties settings on the laptops wireless adapter settings.

Great idea, Not 100% solution for me though
By RobWLINY2
I was really hoping to write a short positive review, but there were some issues which I had to share.
I love that this has taken my 3 separate router/access-points each of which had two network names, and managed to put it all on one network name. Unfortunately, for example, my android-based tablet always seems to connect on the (slower) 2.4GHz network and there is no obvious way to fix this (without perhaps forcing the whole network to use 5GHz, which is not an option).
The signal seemed excellent in some areas that had weak signals before.
A few times while using it, it seemed to disconnect wifi, but after 5-10 seconds it would reconnect. This was in a location with 95-100% wifi signal.
Also, Transfering files on my DELL laptop from network drive -- On Velop i was maxing out around 7MB/sec. Compare that to my previous Linksys Router (wired wireless-access-point) which was getting 27MB/sec peak.
I slightly dislike that i needed to buy network switches because the Velop system only has 2 ethernet ports. On the other hand, now that is done and i don't have to think about the number of available ethernet ports on future devices.
My old access points were "wired" to ethernet, and the secondary nodes here don't seem to work that way (other than as bridges maybe?). This has potential performance implications.
The nodes not being wired i perhaps have more freedom to more optimally place them, so there are potential advantages in using this in areas a wired access point cannot be placed..
As per setup, it was "easy" but twice i had to restart setup on a node after it seemed to hang for more than 5 minutes, and one of those times i needed to factory reset a node..

Same issue. Slow speeds within the network
January 11, 2017
I had the same problem. My old Linksys router was much faster in terms of raw megabits per second speeds (sometimes twice as fast) between devices than the Velop system, which seems tuned mostly for streaming internet. You rarely need speeds much above 50mbs for that and Velop can easily handle that If you are moving big files around within your own network, and have AC devices that are capable of 400mbs or more, Velop is NOT a good option.

Deal if its on sale for $200 or Less, Basic Users!
By ItsAdeal from San Jose, Ca
There are lots of 27" monitors to chose from, I chose to replace 2 older 28" lcd monitors with 2 of these primarily for price and use. At the time of purchase this was the best deal I could find anywhere on the web for a 27" monitor. Acer is a good name, I've been using their products for decades with no problems. always out last the warranty. so far!. there's nothing special about these other than the 3 most common inputs included. its few that support DVI, VGA & HDMI in one monitor these days. Mac users can use a Mini display Port adapter to connect. I tested all three inputs with the same source and found both the DVI and VGA performed well and identical in appearance. The HDMI input did not, the image was washed out compared to the other DVI and VGA inputs. Even though I could have tried to adjust the hdmi to match it did not make sense to do so since it performed well with no adjustment on the other 2 inputs.Since I'm using this in a 2 monitor W7setting I chose the DVI and VGA inputs since my graphics card supports all three. So far all is nominal, steam games look fine, basic use is fine too. The one disappointment for Me was when I opened the box and found the external power supply. Its a personal choice but I prefer internal power supplies on monitors (No power brick, Direct from the wall AC plug to the monitor).
I almost returned these due to this, but after looking at the market again I found it would have cost $100 more each to get that feature. I decided to install and test them. I wall mounted these on 2 vesa 100x100 arms with ease. They phyically lok great, thin bezel, thin depth, non glare. I'm Happy! My advice is if You are looking for a 27" and need multiple inputs and can find this for $200 or less its a good deal at this time. Things change so fast however, so look around at the entire market before chosing this monitor, there may be a better deal out there. The next monitors I buy will be 4K once the price comes down. For Now, these will do.

Thanks for the tip on HDMI
February 27, 2017
I was running my monitor on HDMI and worked for days to get the muddy washed out cast off the screen. Impossible. Then I saw your review, switched to DVI and -- instant improvement!. This is how a monitor should look! Muddy cast gone. Black blacks, white whites. good contrast. No reason this should be but there is no question HDMI connection is the pits. Avoid at all costs. Otherwise, a spectacular monitor for the money, assuming you get in on sale as I did.

I had this same problem. Maddening. Muddy picture. Milky blacks. No contrast. I spent weeks trying to adjust it with only slight improvement. And then I read another reviewer say, "Don't use HDMI." I though he was nuts. Digital is digital right? Apparently not. I switched to a DVI connection and image quality improved 100 percent. Muddy cast disappeared. Black blacks. Decent color saturation. It's not top of the line....still lacking compared to the best monitors. But pretty good. Great for the money if you get it on sale.

Not good for PS VUE
By ates
For most apps and the Amazon prime tv service it works fine. But if you want this strictly for PS VUE then look else where. There is simply too much lag in navigation and using the guide for the true PS VUE experience. It still works but is very slow in operating and navigating. PS VUE is also capped at 30FPS which is noticeable if you watch sports as the video quality is not as smooth compared to the PS4. I would suggest the newest FIRE TV, or NVIDIA SHIELD but that cost $90 and $200, respectively. I would only recommend this if you're not using it for PS VUE.

I have the stick on one set and the regular Fire TV on the other, which is much much faster. The lag times following commands on the stick are just unbelievable, five or ten seconds sometimes. Unacceptable. If you use PS Vue, pay the extra bucks for the box. A much better option.
