Great Directors Cut
on September 25, 2008
Posted by: Moviewolf
James Cameron is sort of the king of the three hour movie. This one does not disappoint. The plot is sustained well through the length of the film. For the time, it had some really cutting edge FX. This film would probably look spectacular in HD. I highly recommend it to everyone (not just Sci-Fi fans).

Pretty Good

This was the big popcorn movie of summer 07. For some diehard Transformers fans, it was a let down and in some ways it was. The director could have spent a lot more time developing the characters of the Transformers themselves but overall it was fun movie with lots of giant robots beating each other up and even some pretty good one liners.

Best in Years
on September 23, 2008

This is the best Batman movie to come out in years. The franchise was dying horribly before Chris Nolan came along. The price for this DVD is a little bit high and doesn't seem to be justified but it's still a great movie.

Alex Proyas' striking virtual reality/film noir hybrid Dark City comes to DVD with a pleasantly surprising amount of extra features, including two audio commentaries -- one with Proyas, writers Lem Dobbs and David Goyer, and production designer Patrick Tatopoulos and another with critic Roger Ebert, one of the film's biggest supporters at the time of its release. The disc also includes comparisons to Fritz Lang's classic Metropolis (which inspired Dark City's angular, retro-yet-timeless look), set designs, cast and crew biographies/filmographies, and the theatrical trailer. Along with the film's widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, these bonuses make the Dark City disc an exciting addition to the collection of any fan of intelligent sci-fi films.

Underrated

Dark City is probably one of the most underrated Science Fiction movies ever made. It does have a loyal following but never got very much press. It's an excellent movie and I recommend it highly to anyone who likes Science Fiction.

This six-disc set contains all 22 episodes from the first season of the cult science-fiction series Babylon 5. The episodes are titled "Midnight on the Firing Line," "Soul Hunter," "Born to the Purple," "Infection," "The Parliament of Dreams," "Mind War," "The War Prayer," "And the Sky Full of Stars," "Deathwalker," "Survivors," "By Any Means Necessary," "Signs and Portents," "TKO," "Grail," "Eyes," "Legacies," "A Voice in the Wilderness Part 1," "A Voice in the Wilderness Part 2," "Babylon Squared," "The Quality of Mercy," and "Chrysalis." Each is presented in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include audio commentary from series creator J. Michael Straczynski on two of the episodes, a smattering of making-of featurettes, and background information on the world of Babylon 5. This is an outstanding set for fans of the series and genre enthusiasts.

And so it begins
on September 21, 2008

This is first season of one of the best shows on TV. If you haven't already seen the show, I advice you to buy it right now. It will seem slow and the beginning and you'll wonder why I recommended it. The first season is marred by some bad acting (by one actor in particular) but for most of the people it just took them some time to understand their character's. And the plot will carry you through the overly hammy scenes.

A relatively bare release of the second in the Superman series, with just a theatrical trailer, some cast and crew notes, and an extra language track to spice up this dual-layer, single-sided disc. The main menu includes music and has an autoplay function built in, but no animation. The movie has been given an anamorphic transfer at 2.35:1 from a fairly low-contrast print. No attempt was made to restore the material, and while the print seems to be without scratches and major flaws, it also appears a little washed out in places; most of the print is well balanced in terms of color, however, though with somewhat cool flesh tones. Blacks are nice and solid, with good detail. The print is fairly sharp throughout, with some moments of softness. The transfer also seems to be free of artifacting and edge enhancement. Bitrate hovers around the 5.5 Mbps range. The Dolby 2.0 Surround is solid work, with some nice effects, though not very much directional and atmospheric effort. High end seems a little limited, and it's a bit weak in the bass end (and there is some audible distortion in the lower mid-range in a few scenes), but overall it works well. The French-language track is mono and features a good voice cast with poor-quality matching; overall, this track is a bit harsh. Subtitles are available in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. The trailer looks good, but sounds terrible. The feature has 37 chapter stops, and the disc is packaged in a snapcase.

Not as good as it could have been

This release of Superman II I felt could have been better. They included the deleted scenes in the Superman the Movie version of the DVD but this one was lacking in that respect. I'm not talking about the Richard Donner cut of this movie either (there's a different version for that). There were just some added scenes that were aired on the TV releases years ago that could have added to things. In any case, it could have been better.

Glad for new cut

I was happy to see that the new "director's cut" was included with the release of this DVD. It added to the plot of the film and gave us something new to see on a movie that many of us have seen several times.
