Excellent music
on June 24, 2009

This CD is the soundtrack to 'Rising', the pilot episode of Stargate: Atlantis.
The soundtrack starts of with one of the finest opening themes ever recorded, a fantastic piece that features an impressive orcehestra and even a chorus. A fitting anthem for a lost civilization.
The rest of the score sets the tone for the TV series with some very nice orchestral compositions. Where Stargate SG-1 based its music on Egyptian motifs, Atlantis creates its own musical environment. From excting action-driven tracks to music that has the feel of some of the great composers of the past.
This is truly one of TV's best musical scores. Highly recommended for anyone who likes great music.
What's great about it: More great Stargate music
What's not so great: I'd like to see more Atlantis CDs

This CD collects some of the best compositions from the first season of Stargate SG-1.
This collection features the usual symphonic and Egyptian elements that can be heard throughout the TV series, as well as some great action themes. In addition to these pieces, there is also some more etherial music associated with the more mysterious events in SG-1.
Every composition on this CD is outstanding, the soundtrack of Stargate SG-1 features some of the finest compositions of any TV series. The tracks on this CD range from exciting and breathtaking to etherial and mysterious. Each one complements the particular episode it is taken from perfectly.
The liner notes included in the CD booklet give some insights into the process of making the music for Stargate SG-1 and have some nice color pictures.
If you are a Stargate fan, you know you audio collection will not be complete without this CD. If you like symphonic scores, check this out.

An excellent start

This CD is the soundtrack to 'Children of the Gods', the pilot episode for the long running TV series Stargate SG-1.
The score captures the soaring feel of the soundtrack to the orignal Stargate movie and establishes the score for the rest of the TV series very well. As with the movie soundtrack, this CD combines Egyptian musical motifs and more modern symphonic elements very effectively creating a dramatic and exciting musical experience.
The opening theme is based on the opening theme for the movie, but where the movie theme was like the overture of a classical concert, the TV theme is an exciting action theme that captures the sense of adventure in Stargate SG-1.
Most of the music on this CD is used throughout the entire SG-1 series, and helps to make the action even more exciting.
Stargate SG-1 boasts one of the best musical scores of any TV series and this CD is essential for any sci-fi fan's audio collection.
What's great about it: Outstanding compositions
What's not so great: Nothing really

Stargate forever!
on June 15, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
Both of these movies take place after the TV series 'Stargate SG-1' and resolve two major story arcs left unfinished by the TV series.
'Ark of Truth' follows SG-1's efforts to find a weapon to defeat the O'rii, an alien army bent on wiping out all life in our galaxy. 'Ark of Truth' gives us some glimpses into the history of the O'rii and of the Stargate itself. As with the TV series, there is plenty of intergalactic action and some very impressive visual effects.
In 'Continuum', Ba'al, the last of the Goa'uld System Lords, awaits execution. Using the Stargate's time travel capabilities, he alters history and uses his knowledge of future events to dominate the Goa'uld and launch a campaign to conquer Earth. SG-1 escapes into the new timeline and has to work to stop the invasion and set things right. 'Continuum' also features a guest appearance by Richard Dean Anderson'. This features the exciting action that is the series trademark.
If you are a Stargate fan, this set will complete your collection.
What's great about it: Two great Stargate adventures in one set

Top notch Sci-fi TV
on June 13, 2009
Posted by: XAvenger
Stargate SG-1 is one of the longest running, and one of the best, sci-fi series on TV. SG-1 ranks among the likes of Twilight Zone in terms of quality.
The series picks up where the movie left off (an ancient alien device called the 'Stargate' is used for interstellar travel) and expands on the universe created in the movie. Stargate was a good movie, but SG-1 takes the concept and improves on it. All of the actors do a fantastic job as their respective characters, Richard Dean Anderson's portrayal of O'Neill and Christopher Judge's Teal'c are partcularly noteworthy.
As in the movie, SG-1 works Egyptian mythology into the story very effectively, and also incorporates Norse and, in later seasons, Arthurian mythology as well. All very well tthought out.
Most Sci-Fi TV tends to be cerebral, SG-1 focuses more on action. There is no shortage of action scenes in Stargate SG-1. The action scenes are exciting to watch and feature some of the best visual effects ever seen in weekly TV.
The music complements the series nicely. As with the movie, the soundtrack features a mix of symphonic music and Egyptian motifs and even some great choral arrangement.
The DVD extras feature in-depth looks at the production of the series, from set construction and costume design to the amazing visual effects. There is even an interview with Christopher Judge where he relates his exeriences at his first Sci-Fi convention appearance.
The pilot episode, 'Children of the Gods' is outstanding and serves as both a sequel to the movie and a pilot to the TV series. It takes a few episode for SG-1 to hit its stride, but it hits its stride about midway into the first season and is really one of the most consistently outstanding series on TV.
If you are a fan of Sci-Fi, then check out Stargate SG-1, one of the best franchises in TV history! And this collection gives you the whole series in one set.
What's great about it: One of the best series on TV in one set
What's not so great: Takes a few episodes to get up to speed

Brilliant Score
on June 12, 2009

This is one of the best scores I've heard. Stargate was a solid sci-fi action movie and featured a breathtaking soundtrack. This deluxe edition has all the fantastic music from the movie.
The soundtrack is an outstanding mix of Egyptian musical motifs and a rousing symphonic score.
For fans of the TV series Stargate SG-1, the movie soundtrack forms the basis for much of the score used in the TV series (particualrly the opening theme).
Highly recommended.
What's great about it: Stirring music
What's not so great: nothing

Is the third time really the charm? It may just be with 1994's Stargate, released for the third time in this "Ultimate Edition." Artisan is known for continually updating their discs, but this two-disc set is still impressive in many ways. Both DVDs have the film -- the first with the 128-minute director's cut and the second with the 121-minute theatrical version -- and, for the most part, they look fantastic. The 2.35:1 image, finally anamorphic, really shines. Colors are represented as they should be and detail is constantly strong. The predominant gold tones really stand out, and distracting elements are kept to an absolute minimum. While that is good, the sound takes this set a step further. Both Dolby Surround EX and DTS 6.1 ES tracks are offered, and they are intense. Surrounds are used extensively, and to great effect, as is the thunderous bass that will surely test any good sound system. At the same time, the quieter moments, including dialogue, are never drowned out. Where the film falters is the supplements, which are good, but it's questionable whether they're "ultimate." The director's cut does include a good scene-specific commentary track from director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. These two have a history together and enjoy the work they do, as is obvious from their comments on this track. Also on this disc is the brief featurette "Is there a Stargate?" consisting of an interview with Chariots of the Gods? author Erich Von Däniken. For a popcorn movie, his theories are treated all a little too seriously, though it's still enjoyable to watch. The second disc, with the theatrical cut, doesn't have a commentary, but it does have a 22-minute documentary, entitled "The Making of Stargate: Creating a Whole New World." Other than a very annoying narration, it does offer some insight into the production, though it never goes too far in depth. Interviews with a number of crew members are included, but oddly enough, not the main two, Emmerich or Devlin. Finishing things off are two theatrical trailers and a fairly extensive biography and filmography section, as well as some lengthy production notes. Ultimate Edition may be something of an overstatement, but fortunately, the pluses outweigh the minuses with this release.

The beginning of a legend
on June 12, 2009

Stargate is a very good sci-fi action movie.
The story involves an ancient alien device (the Stargate) used to travel to other worlds. A special forces team is sent through the Stargate on a recon mission. They come out of the gate on a world dominated by an alien calling himself 'Ra' after the Egyptian Sun God.
The story is well thought out and works with Egyptian mythology very effectively. If you are thinking this is another cerebreal science fiction movie, think again. Stargate features some exciting action scenes and a host of fine visual effects that still hold up (impressive when you consider this movie is more than 10 years old).
Stargate's main contribution to the sci-fi world is that it was the basis for the TV series Stargate SG-1. While the cast in the movie was good, the TV series cast was better. Kurt Russel did a good job as Col. O' Neill in the movie, but Richard Dean Anderson (TV series) gave the character more depth.
The extras are kind of skimpy, I would have liked a featurette on the possible physics behind the Stargate. And there are a few very minor source material problems here and there.
All in all, this is a much better than average sci-fi movie. If you are curious about Stargate, this is the starting point.
What's great about it: Nice sci-fi actioner
What's not so great: I liked the SG-1 cast better

A great action movie
on April 14, 2009

This has become one of my favorite movies!
It ranks among the best sci-fi action movies ever made. Transformers does what many would say was impossible, namely doing Transformers in live-action and making it believable.
The effects are jaw-droppingly good. From the transformations to the Transformers moving and interacting with thier enviroment. It is quite literally impossible to tell where the real ends and the CGI effects begin.
The story is well written, the Autobots and Decepticons are seacrhing for the Allspark which is thier source of life and we get caught in the middle of thier war. Lots of exciting action scenes keep the intensity at maximum. The movie boasts some fine performances, from Hugo Weavings Megatron to Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime.
Highly recommended!
What's great about it: Lots of action, great visual effects
What's not so great: Nothing

Kickin' it old scool

This is easily one of the best retro collections ever. I owned a Sega Genesis many years back and this collections has most of my favorites. It's gret having Sonic the Hedgehog, Columns, Streets of Rage, Shinobi and Vectorman all in one collection.
The controls work very well, which I am thankful for. I have played some retro collections where current controllers were not taken into account, but Sega has worked these games so the PS3 Dualshock 3 works perfectly with all games.
The graphics may be dated, but the fun is not. Many of these games still hold up alongside the current generation of games and are still a lot of fun to play.
It's also interesting to see how the graphics of the Genesis games evolved over time as technology improved. Play an earlier game like Alex Kidd or E-SWAT and then play Vectorman 1 or 2 to see what I mean.
There are a few minor bugs in terms of sound and graphics in a very small number of areas, but nothing that will have any real effect on your enjoyment of the games. These were probably in the original games and may be fixed with future operating system upgrades.
Also, the original Genesis cartridge for Sonic & Knuckles had a feature that let you play as Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic 2 and 3, but that is not in this collection for some reason (maybe it will be a future download).
Despite these two minor issues, I would recommend this to anyone who ever had a Sega Genesis or who has an interest in retor gaming.
What's great about it: Lots of classic Genesis games
What's not so great: Some minor bugs and no Knickles in Sonic 2 and 3

Transform and roll out!

This movie rocks!
The animated movie follows the classic TV series of the same name and features all the great characters longtime transformers fans know and love.
In this movie, the Decepticons have conquered Cybertron and a new menace named Unicron lurks on the horizon. Transformers; The Movie features some brilliantly animated and exciting actions scenes with more Transformers than you can shake an Energon cube at. The pulse-pounding rock score makes the action even more exciting. Watching this movie once is not enough (I've lost track of how many times I've seen it).
Unlike the live action movie, which I am a big fan of, this one features more of that Transformers themselves than Human characters. If you have a favorite character from the TV series, he's probably in this movie.
The voice cast features Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, who played also played PRime in the live action movie. Other cast highlights include Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle and Orsson Welles in his final big screen performance.
The action is fast and intense, and may be a little too intense for some children. If you plan to buy this for a child, I'd recommend watching it yourself first, then decide.
Essential for any Transformers fan!
What's great about it: Generation One at its best!
What's not so great: May be a little too violent for children
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good Movie If You Don't Have A Sony or Samsung
By Enchanter from Trenton, MI
Lots of talk with the First Class movie not working with Sony. It would not work with my Sony BDP S350. Which is NOT 3D. I had to disable the internet connection "Do not allow disc to access internet" or some such. Then I had to delete the data file the Xmen movie had already installed when I tried to watch it the first time. This isn't easy either as it normally doesn't display the stored data in the setup menu. I had to do this by inserting an invalid disc. In this case the digital copy. Then I got the menu to delete the First Class data file. What a pain, I'm watching this now and it BETTER be good, lol. If your not up to this then get the DVD. Hope this helps someone.

Good value for the money. One BRD issue.
By burrisd from Fredericksburg, VA
As a Star Wars fan I find this a good value for the money. I have a problem with the blu-ray discs, which is in no way a fault of Best Buy. Every single disc seems to enter a pause mode during the movie and then speeds up without audio. I have to stop playing the disc and restart it again. This happens regardless of which blu-ray player I use. Other than that, I would recommend this product.
