A+ Gaming Microphone
on September 28, 2023
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
I am of two minds on the Logitech Yeti Orb. My son who plays competitive e-sports gave it a thumbs up and I am slightly more middle of the road with it. I believe the Yeti Orb is the first fruit of the newly acquired Blue Microphones by Logitech early in the summer. Not to say Logitech may have had much to do with the internal design, but it is clearly Logitech with the external G branding and tie into the G Hub gaming Software. It has a certain gamer vibe with the glowing G emanating from the back of it, but thankfully it is a tasteful design that doesn't scream look at me. Also, the lighting is controllable from the Logitech Gaming software so it can be set to your liking or even turn off if you want to be more innocuous.
The mic comes with a short tripod stand that doesn't chew up a terrible amount of desk space and for most people will probably fit the bill. I used it in this manner and my son replaced his Snowball mic with it on an adjustable mic stand attached to his desk. I found the mic had great pickup and possibly a little too sensitive as it picked up everything I was doing with my mouse and keyboard. I am little surprised it doesn't mask noise a tad better, but it no one complained about the noise and everyone could hear me intelligibly. That said, placement is key. If you try to tuck it away or move it further away from you people may struggle to hear you. So while sensitive I think your voice gets masked as background noise if you don't meet a certain threshold. I have it just to the left of my keyboard and I have received no complaints during online matches.
Microsoft Teams on the other hand was a real mixed bag. This one stumps me as it really shouldn't be different, but for whatever reason when I have tried to use the mic in more business situations I have found colleagues asking me to repeat myself unless I have the mic nearly shoved up to my face. Could be a gain problem in the application itself and I haven't played with it more to test that theory as it really isn't the point of the mic. I only bring it up for those that might be considering the mic for dual purposes.
My son loves the mic. He has told me several times he believes it to be a step up from his previous Snowball. Evidently his team mates say he is much clearer and easier to understand than before. Not really a true metric of any kind, but it is a good endorsement from a crowd that this mic aims to entice.
I believe Logitech has achieved what it set out to do here and that is create a mic for gaming, live streaming, and maybe podcasting purposes. I think it is reasonably priced and the Yeti brand of mics lives on for more continued success. My only negative is really the weirdness in Microsoft Teams which could be important if you are looking to work and game with it.

Solid Gaming PC With Future Flexibility
on September 20, 2023
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
Acer is not usually the first company I think of when I am considering a gaming PC. In fact, I usually build my own but sometimes the convenience of a pre-built is just worth it. Let me just state upfront that Acer has a quality gaming PC in the Predator Orion 5000. It is a great balance of hardware coupled to thoughtful design decisions to manage heat and noise.
Right off the bat when you take it out of the box you are immediately greeted with a case design that screams gamer. Now that could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how your tastes run. As soon as you put power to it you are hit with the lights… lots of lights. If you are an RGB fan Acer has designed something with you in mind. The large intake fans are both quiet and potentially bright. Fortunately, Predator Sense software allows one to reign in the RGB goodness if it isn’t your thing. The system is very quiet under load which is great when you put the system in a common area. I have it in my living room tied to my living room TV. I have been playing Starfield on the system at 4K with DLSS (using the mod) and am hitting 45-60fps on ultra settings. With G-Sync enabled it is very smooth and highly playable despite Starfield not really being optimized to either the Intel processor or the RTX 3080. I also gave Cyberpunk 2077 a go at 4K with DLSS & RT and saw 50-60fps. It felt great as well and was highly enjoyable on a big screen with better visual fidelity of either of the current gen consoles. The best part was the system was quiet during gameplay. My bigger system sounds like a blow dryer running when playing games so this is a welcome change. The Windows 11 install is thankfully light on bloat and quickly setup out of the box. The case itself is tool-less and one could quickly swap out the video card or processor if they needed. The processor is great and frankly see little reason to change it, but the RTX 3080 will only last so long before one will need to upgrade to stay competitive. Acer has made the whole process easy and really little different than building your own system. Really my only complaint is the cost. If you find it on sale go for it, but at list you could probably build something higher spec for the money. That said, sometimes convenience is king and you just want to play games. Give the Acer Predator Orion 5000 a look. I think you will be quite surprised as to what they deliver.

The Technics SA-C600 is another in a long line of Technics products that punch above their weight. I have been into two channel audio for decades and I can say this about the SA-C600, don't let the conservative power rating fool you. I have owned storied electronic brands such as McIntosh, Rotel (Michi), PS Audio, Rega, and Naim, as well as, more elusive brands such as Norma, BAT, and Gryphon. I paired the Technics with my Rossi Fiorentino Certaldo II as they are my current preferred flavor. I am finding I am really into the laid back Italian sound (which is probably why I have owned numerous Sonus Faber speakers).
The pairing of the Technics with the Certaldos was a superb match indeed. The Certaldo are relatively efficient speakers (~90db) and therefore a good watermark for the average speaker out there that one might pair with this unit. Let's just say that the 40w the SA-C600 delivered allowed the speakers to sing. They provided punchy, deep bass, organic midrange, and just a touch of air in the highs. I never detected the edginess that sometimes digital amplifiers can project. The sound was very fluid and offered better PRAT than I would have expected. Not quite the warm, analog feel one might get from a Rega amplifier, but certainly better than a lot of Class-D I have heard. Now, the rub here is that I have no idea what this unit sounds like with speakers that are more likely to be paired with it as these are in the $10k class and probably not what Technics imagined. That said, the JENO amplifier technology inside the SA-C600 is a trickle down from their state of the art SU-R1000 integrated amplifier albeit with less output. What Technics is doing here is no joke. It is legit Hi-Fi and I don't care what anyone says to the contrary.
The SA-C600 comes with a variety of options for streaming including AirPlay 2, a built in CD player, and numerous digital and analog inputs. This is truly a Swiss Army knife integrated amplifier. It was quick and painless to get connected to my Wi-Fi and CD playback has been awesome. I am not going to put it in the same class as some of my MUCH more expensive transport/DAC combos, but it holds its own better than I could have possibly imagined. It is also controllable from the Technics app, but I really use it more for setting up the SA-C600 than straight control. The only real knock I have with the unit is that lack of Roon Ready certification and why I docked it one star. This seems like a big miss given the target audience I feel like Technics is trying to entice. That said, I added a WiiM Pro to it and I was off and running with Roon streaming.
It is a powerful combination and the Technics paired to my Rossi has won me over. I prefer the Technics sound to the Cambridge Evo and even the NAD M33 (which is five times the price) and it is now my main system in my bar area of my home. I will be enjoying it for many years to come. Do not hesitate to check it out if you are in the market for a compact streaming amplifier with CD capability. That is a pretty rare combination and the Technics is quite possibly the best... especially in this price range. Just keep in mind if you need Roon Ready you will need to add a transport.

Another Great Ninja Blender
on September 1, 2023
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
I have been using Ninja products for many years and they have never failed me. They always put out a quality product that lasts. The new Detect Duo Blender is no different and another great addition to the Ninja family. Previously, I had been using the Power Blender & Processor System for all of my blending needs. In my house it is used primarily for making smoothies and milk shakes. The new Detect Duo ups the blending ante by upgrading the motor to 1800 watts of power. The previous Power Blender was 1400 watts and while always seemed adequate for my purposes I can see the difference in power on the Detect Duo. Using either the pitcher or the smaller personal blend cup it works magic on fruits, vegetables, ice, and ice cream. Even my youngest son who is the purveyor of milk shakes commented on how smooth the final product was. Needless to say he is a fan.
Overall, the Detect Duo does a great job of auto-sensing the necessary blend and gets right to it. The controls are fancier than the previous model, but really I feel like it is more a cosmetic change than anything. The overall unit is handsome and will look good on a counter. One catch for me was that it is a bit taller with the pitcher on and will no longer fit underneath my cabinets. Certainly not a deal breaker, but be aware the unit combined is 17 1/4" tall versus the Power Blender at 14". Guess that is the price you pay for the extra 400 watts. Additionally, the new Detect Duo only has two suction cups on the base as opposed to the four on the previous model. I originally thought this might be a problem with more power and less grip to the surface, but I was wrong. No issues with stability and it is much easier for me to get the base loose from the counter and moved elsewhere in the kitchen. Nice call Ninja!
Simply put, there are a lot of high end blenders out there for a lot more money and unless you need to blend a phone I can whole heartedly recommend the new Ninja Duo Detect for all your blending needs (and it might be able to do a phone too but I am not going to test that). It is a great value and should be another reliable Ninja product. Do not hesitate to put it on your list.

My oldest son has been bugging me for a glass mousepad for his Finalmouse for months. When the opportunity came along to give Razer's new Atlas Tempered Glass Gaming Mat came along I jumped at it. When it arrived I was surprised by the size. It's big... in fact, it might be the biggest 'hard' mouse pad I have seen. Being that is glass does mean it needs to be handled with care, but it seems pretty sturdy and once on a solid flat surface it shouldn't have any real stress on the glass. The experience of a tempered glass mouse pad is unlike any mouse pad I have used before. It was actually hard for me to use as the mouse wanted to get away from me it was so slick. Now my son on the other hand thinks it is incredible. He plays a lot of first person shooters online and raved that it offered improved precision for him. He also likes the oversized pad as it allows him to make big moves without worrying about running off of it. Just be aware you are going to need some serious desk real estate for it, but if you are serious about gaming the Razer Atlas should be on your shortlist. For me it was just too slick and made casual use tricky as even double clicks in Windows wouldn't necessarily get registered unless you had a very firm grip on the mouse. It is clearly meant for gaming and excels in that area.

Party In A Box!
on June 14, 2023
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
The new Sony XV800 Bluetooth Party Speakers is my first experience with a large portable, party speaker. When it arrived my first impression was that it was pretty heavy. Fortunately, Sony had the foresight to put wheels on it. So I wheeled it into my living room and plugged it in to charge the battery up. While it was charging my curiosity got the better of me and I turned it on. Immediately I was met with lights above and below the speaker indicating to me this was designed with a very specific intent.... to PARTY! The lights aren't so bright as to be brash or light up a room, but if you turn off the lights in your room or use it at night outdoors it certainly makes a statement.
Next, I paired the speaker to my iPhone and began pumping some music into the speaker. Let me just state this, it isn't going to win sound quality of the year in Stereophile magazine, but it is clear and can play extraordinarily loud for something battery powered. It has great bass and solid highs, but the midrange does suffer with MegaBass turned on. When I switched it off the thumping in my chest became more subtle, but vocals were able to better escape. The sound just seemed more balanced with MegaBass off. This speaker puts out a wall of sound so large that you can easily throw a rave in the front yard, back yard, garage, or just about anywhere you want save an empty warehouse.... you might need two then. I played electronic, hip-hop, and heavy metal through it all with great results. When I took it outside and cranked it up I was sure my neighbors were going to call the police. Yeah, it can play LOUD.
It also has a mic input and guitar input as well so you can take the party to the next level if you desire. I'm not much for karaoke myself, but the feature is there. The Music Connect app is Sony's gateway to music playback, but I preferred using the Apple Music app myself. The companion app Fiestable attempts to be the jack of all trades. The Fiestable app allows one to dive further into the lighting, karaoke, and voice controls. It can definitely turn the speaker and you by extension into a Bluetooth DJ.
The battery life seems great. Sony rates the speaker to 25 hours, but I haven't been able to verify that. All I can say is that I charged it once when it arrived and I haven't charged it again since.
The only real drawback I have with the speaker is the lack of weatherproofing. I would like to place this speaker on my back patio and not drag it in after each use. I know Sony's smaller speakers offer this and maybe this speaker is too large to do cost effectively. The simply facts are if you are looking to take a party on the road or just have a backyard BBQ with some tunes Sony has done a fantastic job with the XV800.

I have been using the new HP Dragonfly Pro for about two weeks now as my business machine. I own several Windows laptops and a 2021 MacBook Pro 16 as a basis of my comparison. Let's get the elephant in the room out of the way right from the get-go. The AMD processor/GPU combination in the machine is plenty powerful for most office/casual computing tasks. At no point was speed an issue for me as I ran multiple tabs of Edge and the Office suite of products simultaneously. It worked and it worked great for those tasks.
The touchscreen display is bright and vivid with no flash lighting or weird back panel issues. It is a great balance of resolution and battery life savings since higher resolution panels generally come at the cost of battery life. After all, it is a 14" display so do you really need 4K? In all my usage I never once thought to myself that it needed more resolution.
Battery life is commendable, but still doesn't touch my MacBook. I saw 8 hours on battery on average and the deep sleep functionality worked better than most Windows laptops I have used only losing a small percentage after long stretches of sleep.
The keyboard and touch pad is responsive and well built. Keys are very tactile and typing felt assured. I had no issues with WiFi and speed was solid with my WiFi 6 router. The storage is fast, but not set the world on fire fast. There was clearly a choice of power savings over brute speed, but for office use it was great.
Overall build quality is fantastic. HP has done a great job of making the laptop feel premium, but I think some of that quality does come at a cost of weight. It doesn't feel light given its size, but it is still very manageable and nothing like a full desktop replacement or gaming laptop.
The only real caveat is that is you plan to do any gaming you might look elsewhere at this price. I dropped Assassin's Creed Valhalla on it and it struggled. Sure, you can turn the settings way down or even render at a lower resolution to get something acceptable out of it, but at native 1200p resolution with highest settings it barely cracked 20fps. This machine will not be confused as a modern gaming laptop, but it could work in a pinch for something casual.
Overall, HP has done a nice job with this laptop, but I do think the price is excessive for what you are getting. I would certainly audition others though this model should be in the conversation. Battery life and size is why you want to consider this, but today there are many options to choose some of which are cheaper and even better built.

The Blueair Blue Pure 411a isn't the first Blueair product in my home. I have a larger unit in my bedroom that has served me well for the last several years. Only real maintenance is changing out the filter once a year and it has done a fantastic job keeping my allergies under control. When the opportunity came up to try the new Blue Pure 411a I jumped at the possibility of placing a unit in my home office. I have been using it for about a week now and I have started to notice the difference. I am saddled with terrible allergies and taking medication for it. Even then I found myself sniffling all day long. The Blueair Pure 411a has done an exceptional job in my 150 sq ft office. I spend most of my day there and find I am not suffering as severely from my sinus issues and watery eyes. It seems to be making a real, honest difference.
The reason I am docking it a star is due to the lack of feedback from the unit. My larger unit operates through the Blueair app and provides details about the air quality, as well as, the status of the onboard HEPA filter. The smaller 411a does not connect to the app which is a disappointment. Not a deal breaker by any means, but a quality of life feature I do miss.
The unit has one button and six lights showing the fan speed, mode, and general cleaning status. The unit is attractive and fairly compact and I am running it in auto mode which is very quiet. Overall, the filter does a great job at its core task.... filtering. Blueair makes solid, dependable products and I have no qualms recommending them. If you have a relatively small room in need of improved air quality put the Blue Pure 411a on your short list.

My son has been using the HP Omen 27" 240hz monitor for about a week now as a replacement for his 25" Alienware 240hz G-Sync monitor. He has it coupled to a 3090ti and plays Valorant extensively. Long story short is that he has decided to keep the monitor over the Alienware it replaced. He noted the size and resolution coupled to the 240hz G-Sync compatible refresh rate sold it. The IPS panel offers great color and good off-axis performance at the cost of contrast. This is not a local dimming monitor so black levels aren't going to blow anyones mind. Color reproduction is very good at 95% DCI-P3 and it is VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified. Unfortunately, the HDR10 output really doesn't give a real sense of proper HDR unless in a dark room. Ghosting and overshoot is minimal which is great and makes this a monitor competitive. The only real con is the flimsy stand. The monitor easily wobbles, but it also has a standard VESA 100 x 100 mounting compatibility for third party stands. For the cost though I would have expected something a little sturdier. Overall, a solid monitor that has at least one fan! Take a look if you need a 27" 1440p 240Hz display!

Whether you’re growing the perfect stubble, a handlebar ‘stache or a full beard, this trimmer cuts through even the thickest of facial hair. Yep, even those stubborn stubbles. Great Trimmer for Shorter Beards
on February 13, 2023
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
Manscape has decided to branch out and do beard grooming. They make quality trimmers so I was excited to see what they would come up with. I grow a medium length beard (in other words, I am not going to win any Mountain Man awards for my beard). The Manscape Beard Trimmer is larger than I was expecting straight out of the box. Has a nice robust, well-built feel despite its plastic frame. There is a dial in the middle to allow for beard length selection which offers 0.5mm increments to 10mm. This was the biggest issue and why I can't use the trimmer anymore. I grow my beard at least twice that length and there are no additional guards with it. That said, it did a great job in my testing and the guard is easily removable for cleaning. I can't testify to the battery, but it seems like it would last for several rounds of full beard grooming before needing a charge. It also comes with a pseudo hard-side travel case which is a nice touch too. Overall, the trimmer seems great, but it really needs some longer trim options. Hey Manscape how about a second, longer guard in the box!

Are these noise cancelling for gyms that play really loud music?

They do not offer active noise cancellation. They do however provide pretty decent passive noise cancellation if you can get them snug in your ears.

Pretty much any non-VESA to VESA mounting kit will work that is designed for a display this size.

is this a matt or gloss finish?

Glossy with an anti-glare finish. Does a reasonable job with reflections, but is no match for a matte screen.

How much are the Satlelites and are/when they available? My home is 4200 square feet. W/2000 square feet of finished basementnd I need all 3 floors covered. I know 2 cant cover 6200sqft. But one on each floor might. Also can each work being cat6 wired in

Three units (including the router itself) should have you covered assuming you can place them roughly center on each floor. Unfortunately, the satellites cannot be wired in at this time, but I do believe Netgear is looking at the situation. I am using the router and a single satellite in a ~4000sq ft home with a finished basement and it works great even with the satellite being connected wirelessly. Keep in mind the Orbi system uses a dedicated 5ghz channel as a backhaul so it does not work like a conventional router/extender combo.
