Didn't Change My Mind
on April 5, 2021

As a small business class all-in-one the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e didn't change my mind that one should consider laser before inkjet. Don't get me wrong, for photo grade color printouts inkjet is superior but generally overkill for most businesses. The 9105e represents a top-tier all-in-one from HP within their inkjet line and functions reasonably well. It quickly connected to my WiFi network and I was up and running in minutes on both my MacOS and Windows 10 based machines. It prints and scans wirelessly without a hitch. I didn't try the fax function because that is simply something I don't ever need to do. This model does come with HP+. What is HP+ you ask? Well, simply put, it is a 2-year extended warranty and 6 months of ink. HP provides 700 pages a month of free ink for the first six months of ownership and then will gladly you charge you for the continued subscription. I suppose if you are doing that volume of printing then maybe that is worthwhile, but I am still in the camp that color laser is the better option for reliability and volume. I haven't had this printer long enough to evaluate the overall reliability of the printer, but in the past inkjet printers have been a thorn in my side. Clogged nozzles and dried out cartridges were the bane of my existence and why I ultimately made the switch. Overall, the 9015e does the job and for the list price comes with 6 months of free ink and an extended warranty which isn't a bad deal. If you need to print photos then it is a no-brainer, but for standard office fare I would look at all options.

Finally!

I have finally found my one-stop shop for trimming and shaving. The Philips Norelco OneBlade Pro is what I have been looking for and didn't even know it. It is light, compact, and offers great battery life. The OneBlade is pretty simple and ingenious design. Offers regular straight razor type performance with the convenience of an electric shaver. With the trim guard off I was able to quickly and precisely shave the edges of my beard with absolute comfort. With the guard on and at its maximum setting I was able to trim my beard pretty effortlessly. The guard offers 10 settings with a convenient dial design to easily lock in a setting, but my only complaint is that it doesn't offer higher trims. I trimmed my beard down quite a bit further than I normally do, but I must say the overall quality of the trim was fantastic. My beard was left very uniform and smooth. My normal beard trimmer definitely does not do as good a job, but it does offer increased length. Keep in mind the OneBlade Pro is a replaceable blade and depending on how much one shaves it will probably need replacing roughly every month or so. There is a convenient wear indicator built into the blade to alert you that the blade needs to be changed to get an optimal shave/trim. The shaver comes with a charging base as well which makes charging quick and easy. Overall, the OneBlade Pro is my new shaving best friend and I have put all of my other shavers in the drawer. I highly recommend it.

Near Perfect
on March 15, 2021

The Eufy Smart Lock Touch & Wi-Fi is a a near perfect door lock implementation. It is well built, easy to install, and offers reliable operation. I have been using the new Eufy Smart Lock for about three weeks now and it has been a great experience. Out of the box Eufy provides everything needed to quickly get the lock installed. Took me about 30 minutes to get mine installed as the hole for the deadbolt in the door frame was poorly lined up to the door itself. Of note, make sure to immediately start charging the included battery out of the box as it take about six hours to get it fully charged. Once in place it feels premium and impenetrable. Exactly what you want in a door lock... confidence.
The smart lock offers both fingerprint sensor, as well as, pin code operation. With the addition of Wi-Fi the smart lock can now be operated when away from the home. While traveling recently I needed to let someone in the house and without needing to provide them guest access I simply unlocked the front door from 800 miles away. Worked like a charm. The fingerprint sensor offers fast recognition and has picked up my finger first try each time. Battery life seems to be great and still shows a full charge after three weeks. A good sign for the overall stamina of the battery.
I gave it five stars despite one big caveat in my house.... no HomeKit support. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Eufy will bring HomeKit support to the lock in the future and it does offer Google and Alexa support immediately.
Overall, the Eufy Smart Lock Touch & Wi-Fi is competively priced, trouble-free, and built like a tank. It fills in the big missing piece from the original Smart Lock Touch by adding Wi-Fi to make it fully featured. For my house it is a great automation addition and should definitely be on your short list of smart locks.

Good, Not Great
on March 4, 2021
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Fort Collins, CO
I have spent two weeks with the new ASUS TUF DASH as my primary machine and have come away thinking it could have been so much more. The build quality is quite good, but the plastic housing doesn't exactly scream premium. Also, the graphics on the display lid make taking it into a more serious setting a tad questionable. If you are buying it for straight up gaming then the looks will be right up your alley. Overall fit and finish feels good though. The machine is also fairly thin and reasonably light; Very portable for the power inside.
Let's talk about what's inside. The quad core processor right off the bat threw up a huge question mark in my head as to how it would effect performance. After running benchmarks and playing some Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Cybperpunk 2077 I determined my concerns may be reasonable. In both instances the RTX 3070 appeared to be the bottleneck (>95%) and the CPU could be seen running 75% with no throttling. This was using max quality settings with both and ray tracing turned on in Cyberpunk I was seeing 45-60fps. Obviously with a less graphically intense game you would see far higher frame rates and be able to see more benefit in the 240Hz display. Despite the sub 60fps average frame rate in both games the variable refresh rate helps substantially in making it feel smooth. It is immensely playable and should fit the bill for all current games. My concern stems more around future titles. The TUF DASH is just barely able to hit 60fps maxed out with current titles and creates real pause for future titles that would be assumed to be more advanced than today's titles. Just don't think the machine has the legs for a long run.
The 15.6" 240Hz 1080p display looks great and offers solid on and off axis color reproduction. Very responsive and only minor flash lighting in the bottom corners of the display. It is a variable refresh rate capable display, but does not directly support G-Sync despite the RTX 3070 inside.
The PCI-E 3.0 1TB nVME SSD is fast and responsive. Nothing of note to say aside from it gets the job done... quickly.
The TUF DASH has WiFi 6 (AX) and a gigabit ethernet port which is a nice plus on a thinner machine. Keyboard has backlighting with adjustable brightness and pattern control, but single color. Keys feel good and I found the typing experience solid (minimal typing errors) with long periods of use. The trackpad is smooth, very responsive, and reminds me of my Razer.
Battery life is decent at around seven hours with medium brightness and running basic applications such as web browsing or Word. If you opt to fire up a game expect less than two hours from the notebook.
Overall, ASUS has built a competent gaming notebook in the TUF DASH. I believe the choice of the quad core 11th gen i7 was a mistake long term, but overall the machine gets the job done. So why only three stars, well, that is what it is. In the very competitive gaming notebook market the TUF DASH is simply average. There is nothing that sets it out from the pack and has a questionable longevity in exactly the market it aims for. Add it to your list if you are in the market for a thin and light gaming notebook, but research the competition first.

Do You Like Bass?
on February 8, 2021

from Fort Collins, CO
This is going to be short and sweet. Do you like headphones with bass? Would you consider yourself a bass-head? If you answered yes to either of those questions then I have the headphones for you. I had the previous Crusher and the Crusher Evo is a further iteration on that design. They are lightweight, very comfortable, well built, and offer prodigious bass. The amount of bass is controllable and can be dialed in if you don't want to feel like you have a subwoofer strapped to your head. When I say a subwoofer strapped to your head I mean exactly that, the headphones actually vibrate on your head from the driver excursion. It is an intense feeling for sure, but can be dialed way back if you aren't in the mood. They can produce a nice balanced sound if you desire and offer great controls on the headphones themselves. The app will let you dial them in further too. Overall, they really are a great wireless headphones with outstanding 30+ hour battery life. Put them on your short list if you are a bassaholic as I have never experienced another set of headphones that come close.

Seemingly Very Good
on January 19, 2021

Air purifiers are a tough category to assess depending on the air quality where it is placed. I live in Colorado and air quality here is generally very good. That said, I have been using the Blueair HealthProtect 7770i for about two weeks and I can honestly say I can tell the difference. I have pretty bad allergies and I suffer from sinus congestions pretty frequently until now. I placed the 7770i in my office where I spend most of my time and it has made a qualifiable difference. My office is open to the living room so the overall space is probably in excess of 900 sq ft which exceeds the models maximum room size, but with it in the corner of my office near me I can absolutely tell the difference. My sinuses are the best they have ever been and I can only attribute that to the 7770i scrubbing the air. Let's talk about the air purifier itself a bit more.
The Blueair HealthProtect 7770i is the fairly large white moonlith, but has just enough style to not look grossly out of place. It has both manual and auto fan modes and I have been running it in auto primarily with great results. It is very quiet in auto, but if manually placed in the highest fan setting it is similar to sticking your head out of a moving car window. It's loud. However, in auto I have never heard it go above a whisper though your results could vary depending on the environment it is placed. It has a screen on the top of the unit displaying three different particulate sizes, as well as, and VOC (gases) being detected. It also has a large LED light bar that can give indication as to what the unit is detecting from a distance. It will change color based on what levels are being detected in the incoming air. It is defeatable when placed in Night mode which blacks out the top panel to make sleeping possible if the unit is placed in a bedroom as the lights are fairly bright, but adjustable.
The unit also connects via WiFi to the Blueair app which I have installed on my iPhone. The app works well and I have not experienced any connectivity issues since installing the unit. The app provides local area air quality statistics, as well as, the air quality where the unit has been placed. All of the controls for the 7770i are accessible from the app which makes throwing it in Night mode when you are already in bed a possibility and a nice quality of life feature. The app also provide filter life information too.
Overall, the Blueair HealthProtect 7770i does a seemingly very good job based on what I can tell in my home. If you live somewhere with worse air quality it might make a more appreciable difference. I can recommend the unit based on my experience in my office.

Arlo Pro 3 now with WiFi!
on December 8, 2020
Posted by: Balthazar2k4

Not a terrible amount I can say about the new Arlo Pro 4 that hasn't been said about the Pro 3. The only real difference is that the Pro 4 can now be connected direct to WiFi without the need for a Hub (it can also be connected to an existing hub). The Pro 4 offers all the same great features of the Pro 3 including outstanding video quality, great night mode and spotlight capability, and awesome battery life. Arlo cameras are still the best wireless camera solution I have found. Yes, they are a tad pricey, but they are fabulous cameras and offer Homekit support which is important in my very Apple-centric home. Frankly, if you want the best then there is really no other.

Great Sound
on November 27, 2020
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Fort Collins, CO
I have owned countless mid- to high-end audio systems in the last 20+ years. Among those systems were a couple Bowers & Wilkins (B&W). B&W has been a mainstay in audio and is known to produce speakers that produce fantastic midrange. The B&W 607 S2 Anniversary Edition (AE) follows in a long time tradition of trickle down loudspeaker economics. Much of what makes up the 607 are lessons learned and technology shared from B&W's higher end lines. Make no mistake, while the 600 Series is considered the entry point to B&W loudspeakers that isn't to say they sound like entry level speakers.
The 607 S2 AE is the smallest bookshelf speaker in the 600 Series line. Upon unboxing one is met with a small, well-crafted speaker with exemplary fit-and-finish. The cabinet material is a pretty standard wrap, but that is expected at this price point and very well executed. Each speaker is fairly weighty for its size which indicates solid internal bracing and they do pass the 'rap' test. Knocking on top of the cabinets produces a non-resonant thump. Certainly doesn't sound like a hollow box. The 1" metal dome tweeter and 5" woven fiber "Continuum" cone look great and the tweeter has a non-removable metal grille over the top for protection.
I placed the speakers approximately 8' apart and 4' off the back wall to eliminate any prominent 'reinforcement' of the bass from reflections. I gave them about a 5 degree toe-in to improve imaging. I connected them to a Sony ZA5000ES receiver using BetterCables bi-wire cables. I broke them in with approximately 100 hours of pink noise.
I listened to a variety of music ranging from rock, rap, EDM, vocal, acoustic, and orchestral. I was immediately greeted with the characteristically warmer sound B&W speakers generally offer with fantastic midrange composition and imaging. I do not classify B&W speakers as a neutral speaker. If you are looking for something that provides minimal coloration of music then B&W may not be your cup of tea. That said, the sound that emanates from those very diminutive speakers is intoxicating. They offer a fantastic balance of bass and midrange coupled with a more subdued high frequency finish. They can provide incredible detail at low volumes, but are a tad more difficult to drive than my larger Martin Logan Motion 40i floor standers. They can play moderately loud, but cone breakup is a problem when pushed. The 5" cone simply gets overwhelmed if driven hard. At low to moderate volumes the cone coupled with the ported cabinet do a great job of providing a great foundation for bass. Not overwhelming so unless you back them closer to the rear wall, but you may create a boomy sound if one isn't careful. Imaging is pinpoint. I would say it is better than my MLs referenced above. Of course, the conventional metal dome tweeter and crossover network play a large role in that perceived difference. All music played sounded great and further proves why B&W has the great reputation it does.
My only real complaint regarding the 607 S2 is the lack of stand mounts. I have several sets of stands and all offer mounting points at the bottom to screw down the speaker for security. I do have kids in my house and bookshelf speakers have always been a gamble as kids will be kids. I would love to see B&W add a mounting point on the bottom of the speaker in the future.
If you are looking for either a small speaker set for a bedroom or office then put the Bowers & Wilkins 607 S2 Anniversary Edition on your shortlist. If you are interested in moving up to a more refined sound for music than what that home theater in a box can provide then give the 607 S2 AE an audition. They are a great sounding all around performer for smaller applications.

Great Cordless Vacuum With One Flaw
on November 1, 2020
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
from Fort Collins, CO
Full admission, I had never heard of Tineco before giving the PureOne S12 EX a whirl. That said, I am glad I know who they are now. This vacuum gives my Dyson V11 a serious run for its money. The Tineco PureOne S12 is very different than the Dyson in that it is a 'smart' vacuum. The vacuum connects to your WiFi and phone or tablet via an app. It displays how much dust you are collecting between runs, battery life, filter wear, and how full the dust bin is. What I have found is that it is at best something 'fun' to check out, but serves little real world purpose.
The PureOne S12 does have Tineco's iLoop technology to allow for a pretty great auto mode for controlling the suction power. iLoop monitors the dust being collected and will ramp up or down the suction power to ensure great vacuuming with the battery in mind. I have been using the S12 for the last week on carpet, hardwood flooring, and tile with a house consisting of three kids and a dog. The S12 does a great job. For a test I vacuumed the living room carpet where the dog lays and sheds quite a bit. I made a single pass in auto and then went back over it with the Dyson V11 to see if the Dyson might pick up more. The Dyson came up empty. A great sign for the S12 and a full dust bin made a pretty convincing argument.
This leads me to my one big problem with the S12.... the dust bin. The dust bin is super easy to open with a small button on the side which pops open the bottom. The problem is that unless you are only vacuuming up dust I couldn't get it to empty without sticking my hands in and pulling out the contents. This happened every single time I used the unit. This is not a problem I face with the Dyson and it makes what is a pretty great vacuum into a bit of a pain to use. The dust bin isn't that large to begin with and so emptying it multiple times during a cleaning becomes a chore when I have to get dirty to empty it each time. Most likely this is an issue thanks to the pet hair. I am sure that if you are in a house without pets it is far less of an issue. Just keep this in mind if you do though.
Battery life has been great and I can easily vacuum the main floor of the house (2200 sq ft) on a single battery. Which reminds me, the unit comes with an extra battery which is super handy if you have a very large house or forget to put it on the wall charger (like my kids have done). Another great thing is that the power head has a light on it. That is one thing I have sorely missed on the Dyson and am very pleased to find on the S12. Having one again was a revelation when doing the hardwood floors as it highlights the dirt versus just using the overhead rooms lights. Really boosts the cleaning satisfaction as I feel like things are actually getting cleaned up.
Overall, the Tineco PureOne S12 EX is a great competitor to the Dyson V11. I can easily recommend it with the one caveat being the dustbin. Don't get me wrong the S12 does a great job with pet hair it just takes a little more work to empty it. If you don't have pets I would say this is a super easy recommend. Show up for the great suction power and solid battery life. I just wouldn't consider the connected 'smart' features as a reason to consider it.

Game Changer

My three kids are some of the pickiest eaters I know. The Crock-Pot Slow Cooker/Pressure Cooker/Air Fryer has changed dinnertime in this house. After unboxing the Crock-Pot and unpacking the pressure and crisping lid(s) it is pretty much ready to run. Three meals prepared and three kids satisfied. Operating the Crock-Pot is dead simple. One bank of buttons for slow cooking and another for pressure. The bottom buttons enable air frying and simmer/heat modes. There is a big display in the middle to help keep tabs on progress.
It is as easy to use as prep the food, throw it in Crock-Pot, throw the appropriate lid on and select what you are cooking. The results have been tremendous. Out of the gate we made BBQ pulled-chicken using the pressure cooker. The BBQ pulled-chicken was great and was a hit with all three kids (and the adults too). Next, we slow cooked some chili. Brown some meat, throw the other ingredients in the pot, stir and wait. Another great pot of chili made and thumbs up from everyone. Last, but not least, we tried a recipe from the included cook book, parmesan crusted chicken nuggets. Cut up a chicken breast, egg bath, roll it in a parmesan bread crumb mix, and drop it in the Crock-Pot. Throw the crisping lid on and wait. Results were a healthier, tastier chicken nugget than conventional oil frying. We decided to get crazy and give some fried pickles a whirl. Same method as the chicken minus the egg bath. Voila! Great tasting fried pickles. Resounding win for the evening. Once the meals are made and everyone is happy the clean-up of the unit is pretty easy. Pull out the cooking pot and scrub. Wipe down the lids and you are good to go.
All I can say is this Crock-Pot wields magical powers as we have never had three meals in a row that all the kids agreed on. The 8-qt Crock-Pot is now a counter fixture for the foreseeable future. The Swiss army knife of cooking and an indispensable tool in our kitchen.

Serve nutritious and easy home-cooked meals at a fraction of the time that conventional cooking requires. Enjoy all the same benefits you love about Express Crock—one-touch settings for quick pressure-cooked meals—now with a Crisping Lid that adds a delectable crisp to chicken, ribs, and more!

Does it have a removable liner for washing?

Yes, the internal cooking pot is removable for easy cleaning. It is also dishwasher safe, but the manufacturer recommends hand washing to preserve the non-stick coating.

is the jbl free earbuds waterproof?

No. They are sweatproof which is barely on the cusp of water-resistant. In other words, if you are working out they will be fine, but don't expect to use them in a downpour outside.

Are these noise cancelling for gyms that play really loud music?

They do not offer active noise cancellation. They do however provide pretty decent passive noise cancellation if you can get them snug in your ears.

Which adapter would work for this monitor if I wanted to mount it to a standard Vesa stand

Pretty much any non-VESA to VESA mounting kit will work that is designed for a display this size.

is this a matt or gloss finish?

Glossy with an anti-glare finish. Does a reasonable job with reflections, but is no match for a matte screen.

How much are the Satlelites and are/when they available? My home is 4200 square feet. W/2000 square feet of finished basementnd I need all 3 floors covered. I know 2 cant cover 6200sqft. But one on each floor might. Also can each work being cat6 wired in

Three units (including the router itself) should have you covered assuming you can place them roughly center on each floor. Unfortunately, the satellites cannot be wired in at this time, but I do believe Netgear is looking at the situation. I am using the router and a single satellite in a ~4000sq ft home with a finished basement and it works great even with the satellite being connected wirelessly. Keep in mind the Orbi system uses a dedicated 5ghz channel as a backhaul so it does not work like a conventional router/extender combo.
