Great Comedy for Everyone

We went and saw this in theaters, and both my girlfriend and I had a great time. This movie had some great acting to move it along, and although the plot wasn't all that special and somewhat predictable, it didn't ruin the movie in the least bit. Most of this was due to the humor that Carrell provides the entire movie. It worked well with the other characters he surrounded himself with since he was the bumbling idiot while everyone else were the top in the field. The action was alright, nothing special, but its a comedy and not an action film in the least. Definately a movie everyone can enjoy.
What's great about it: Acting, Humor
What's not so great: Somewhat predictable

Don't get this movie if you're expecting lots of punching and throwing of heavy things. This movie has a few parts where you witness what Superman can do, but overall, this isn't an action movie. If anything, it's a love story that carries on from the original film where Superman II left off. Routh does a good job capturing the Reeves version of Superman, though i can't say that Lois had the same luck in the recasting. Spacey did an amazing job as Luthor, if not better than Hackman did originally. The plot was subpar and the ending was pretty much weak. There's a lot of loose ends they could tie up in a followup movie, but apparently they are just going to redo the entire thing. It's a beautiful movie (one scene with Superman above Earth in particular), but it's definately more of an emotionally driven film than an over-the-top action movie most were hoping for.
What's great about it: Beautiful cinematography, good acting
What's not so great: Plot, low action

Trick or Treat

Halloween is one of my favorite movies of all time. The original at least. This movie has many things that the original left out for good reasons. The origin in the Zombie film made Michael more human which was a good reason Carpenter left it out. When you don't know Michael's reasoning, when you don't know what he's like, when he is nothing more than a "shape", that's when he is scary. The origin in this film really weakened Michael Myers and made him less threatening and creepy.
The second half was also pretty much taken from the original film. However Zombie added much more too it, though it seemed a bit too much. As much as I liked to see a ruthless Michael, and I know Zombie was trying to end the movie in one film, it still felt like they just tried too much with the last half.
There was also one scene in the uncut film that made me uneasy. There was a scene while Michael was in prison that seemed unnecessary in any respects. Why Zombie filmed this was beyond me. Maybe it showed that he didn't care about anyone else but his masks, but the overrall scene felt completely out of place and somewhat perverted. It wasn't in theaters, and I'm glad it wasn't.
This movie was...ok. Nowhere near the greatness that was the original, but I have to give Zombie props for trying to touch a movie of the originals caliber. He gave it his all, but he tried too much with it and I felt he failed. So if you're a huge fan of the original, you probably won't like this one. But if you haven't been exposed to the Carpenter version, you might enjoy this one.
What's great about it: Cool mask, ruthless Michael, nods to past movies
What's not so great: Origin, crammed second half

A Tinker

This movie involves the creation of Tinkerbell, how she came to be, and the world she is born into. It's her trying to find her place in the world, her doubting the roll she was put into, and trying to battle out of it. Of course how it turns out is completely predictable, but it was a pretty entertaining story although there were some story elements that seemed a little out of place. Otherwise, the kids will love it, and the adults will feel just meh.
What's great about it: Great for TInkerbell fans
What's not so great: Not for me

Easily the most accessible Metallica cd you can buy. It's a good mix between their heavier stuff and more mainstream material. From here, you can go backwards to the faster metal material, or afterwards with the more progressive bluesy music. As my first Metallica album, I thought it was great, but I can see why longtime fans might be turned off with this album. After the brutality that they unleashed in the 80's, having this mainstreamed-toned down music can be a bit saddening. However, for those new to Metallica this album has a wide range of songs that you won't be able to get out of your head, catchy riffs, heartfelt lyrics, and songs everyone can enjoy on an unbiased level.
What's great about it: Easy access
What's not so great: Fall from grace

Leading to a Trilogy

Hellboy 2 was a great movie. It had a lot of action in it, and the story starts right away. It was definately humorous and there were lots of things dropped that sound like a third movie might be in the possible future, and hopefully del Toro decides to do it if there is. Del Toro should definately be praised on the cinematography, because this was some beautiful work and some of the creatures were absolutely remarkable. My only complaint would be that the character moments that helped make the first movie so enjoyable (mainly the Hellboy moments) weren't there as much. The movie almost seemed like an Abe Sapien movie in a way. Although there were some funny scenes between characters, the wittiness and comedy of Hellboy from the first movie didn't have the same impact that it did in this film. Otherwise, I definately think this movie should be checked out.
What's great about it: Acting, Action
What's not so great: Not as great character moments

Having heard how gross and vulgar this man, I was curious on how Mr. Tanner could be like this and how well he was at being a comedian. Unfortunately, I was disappointed...greatly. There's nothing intelligence about his comedy at all. He's vulgar...that's it. And to play with the idea that he's Mr. Tanner saying these dirty things, after every joke he has to go something like "WHAT?! HUH?!" with a stupid face to show surprise. So if you're looking for something intelligent and funny, go check out George Carlin. If you're looking at something stupid and lame that plays off a gimick and is a waste of money, feel free to pick this up.
What's great about it: It's...different
What's not so great: Not funny

Take to the skies

This is an enjoyable movie if not slightly overrated. However, the title Iron Man is a bit misleading, since Iron Man is only in the film for like 15 minutes. "Tony Stark: Iron Man" would have been a more fitting title.
The acting, although enjoyable, can be pretty bland sometimes. Paltrow's character is loveable, but somewhat boring. Downey can go a little over-the-top sometimes, but is still amazing, and the villain comes off less than threatening. However, it's not enough to ruin the movie for anyone.
The action is great, but pretty sparse. Lots of explosions, just not enough for what I was expecting. The last seen in particular reminded me too much of Robocop, but that was apparently the idea behind that scene.
The plot in general is pretty straight-laced with nothing too out of left field. It hints at possible villains (if your familiar with the comics) and at the end there's a nice scene that begins to connect other Marvel movies together. However, the plot seems to stretch out in parts (especially Stark making the Iron Man armor takes almost the entire film and tweaking it) and the big villain is hardly a shock.
Besides some minor complaints, it's a great movie and is very enjoyable.
What's great about it: Action, acting, fun
What's not so great: Plot in points, acting in parts, lack of Iron Man

Why So Serious?

What a great game. I was unsure of how the lego games are, since I've never played them before, but I was very happy with this game. It's extremely cute with characters from the comics (a lot too) with things you would expect from the old 60's era Batman. Seriously, villains get away by tripping Batman and him going facefirst into the concrete. Has me cracking up.
It's a fun game that allows you to play with tons of characters (that you have to purchase in the Batcave) and lots of gadgets and suits that you can wear for them that provides you with different abilities. The fights are pretty basic, just lots of punching and whatnot, but doesn't really ruin the game. At times you build different things to help you get farther in the level, or build a set to get a new suit.
It's a very straightforward game, but with lots of fun to it. As kiddy as this game feels, it's a game that everyone can enjoy.
What's great about it: A good batman game
What's not so great: perhaps too kiddy

Rebirth

Being a huge Metallica fan, I am going to try and do my best to give an honest review without feeling somewhat biased to give them a good review. You have some people who will love whatever they throw out, and you have some that will hate them for whatever they throw out. So here's my best to describe this album on a neutral ground.
This album is jam packed with riffs, solo's and an intensity that Metallica hasn't shown in a long time. There are rarely any moments on this cd that let up any, and when they do, they decide to shove the music down your throat with the heaviness before the song is over.
The album starts out with a heartbeat before blowing into THAT WAS JUST YOUR LIFE and END OF THE LINE. The music is relentless with the get-go and shows a new type of Metallica that is hard to compare to previous albums. There are various riffs and something that fans missed on the last album, solos that shred your mind as if Kirk has wanted to get them out for a long time.
BROKEN, BEAT & SCARRED is very reminiscent of St. Anger in a way that it's repetitive in both music and lyrics. Now don't get turned off hearing it's similar to St. Anger, because it's probably one of the best songs on the album. It's brutal and catchy, although the lyrics are probably the weakest on the album with lines like "What Don't Kill You, Make You More Strong". Definately has you singing and banging you head by the end of the song.
THE DAY THAT NEVER COMES is one people know. It starts off very "One"-ish from the "...And Justice For All" album, but is hands down probably the worst song on the album. Not saying that it's bad, cause it's not, but it seems to lighten the intensity of the album a bit. The lyrics seem to revolve around child abuse within homes, and lines like "Love is a four letter word, and never spoken here" have a strength in a poetic way, then the music busts out in a faster pace, but nothing too fantastic IMO.
ALL NIGHTMARE LONG is one of Metallica's catchiest songs, and one of the best on the album. It starts off with a great bassline courtesy of Robert Trujillo before everything comes to a stop....then a blistering riff comes in and drums chime in in an almost ominous tone. This will be one of Metallica's best songs of their career, and will probably be one of the following singles which will more than likely, be a huge hit for the band. The chorus destroys like you wouldn't believe.
CYANIDE is also another song that's not terrible, but not necessarily the best. The solo brings me back to the ending solo on "Fade to Black" in a way, and James shows his creativity with the lyrics bringing great imaginings with metaphors like "concrete angel". THE UNFORGIVEN III, as hesitant as I was about this song, has slowly grown on me. Its' completely different than the previous two, and it has a beautiful melody. Some parts of the song seem a little out of place, and if shortened, I think this song could have been great if it just stuck to the slower tune of the song.
THE JUDAS KISS is without a doubt, the best song on the album, and one of the best of their career. It also, yet again, starts out with a furious riff and the lyrical content that was similar to "Jump in the Fire" involving the devil. The chorus is going to be a major hit with live performances, and will be something great like the "Die" chanting during "Creeping Death". The solo reminds me a little of the Load era, but it's hardly a bad thing.
SUICIDE & REDEMPTION is the instrumental of the album, but doesn't quite keep on par with previous instrumentals. It's a total riff-fest, but for the most part, seems more like a jam session. Not bad, but don't expect it to blow your mind.
MY APOCALYPSE is the thrash song on the album that finishes it like Damage Inc finishes "Master of Puppets". It's in your face, metal up your @$$, take no prisoners and will leave you wanting more. Great finish for a great album.
GOOD POINTS: Tons of riffs, better production, solos, catchy songs
BAD POINTS: Lars's drumming doesn't do much for the album, songs can be a bit long, album weakened by moments here and there
To point out, some people have been complaining a lot about the production. Apparently to them, the distortion is a problem along with "clipping". Personally, I barely notice anything. I think these are people who have some personal vendetta against the band, and strive to find anything wrong with them and get nitpicky with their albums to the point it's just annoying. Many others have not noticed many problems with the production, but others make a big deal of it (thus it being newsworthy on yahoo and whatnot). The thing is, there are points here and there where production seems weaker. Drums seem louder than anything else in places, music in general sounds a bit "muffled" (would be the best word to describe it, such as the beginning of THE JUDAS KISS), but other than that, I don't think it's as big of a problem as everyone makes it out to be.
So take this, and any review for what you think it's worth. Many think this is the missing link between "...And Justice For All" and "The Black Album", and it very well may be. If you like Metallica, this is an album to own. If you're not so big of a fan, you might go to their website and check on the songs streaming there, but I highly recommend that this album be a part of your collection. I think you'll be greatly pleased.
What's great about it: Here and there
What's not so great: Here and there
