Good, but not great entry-level receiver
on May 8, 2018

from KCMO
I received this product for my fair and unbiased review.
TL;DR - The Sony STR-DH790 is a great start for those who want a home theater but don't want to spend a lot of money. While only sporting a few ports (4 HDMI inputs, NO FRONT PANEL HDMI, 4 analog audio inputs, NO PHONO INPUT, two digital audio inputs, no analog video inputs) and no network connectivity, it does feature built-in bluetooth and HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 and support for the common HDR formats (HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log Gamma). Sound is crisp and clean, though it doesn't as as much power as a midrange or high-end receiver; two subwoofer outs and the ability to bi-amp your front speakers in a 2 channel or 5.1 channel setup is a nice touch, however; the bi-amping feature makes this a good receiver option for a listening room on a budget. On-screen prompts are easy to understand and concise. The only downfall is Sony didn't use banana plug-compatible speaker connectors for every speaker connection, just the front speakers.
All in all, it's a good option for those on a budget that only have a few devices to connect (streamer box, Blu-Ray, cable/satellite box, and game console or living room PC).
------------------------------------------------------------------
Full review:
Setting up the Sony was pretty easy. Being that I currently have a home theater receiver (Onkyo TX-NR717), I just removed my current receiver and connected the STR-DH790 (from here on out known as the Sony) in its place. The first thing I noticed was the lack of HDMI ports on the Sony; being that I was going from a midrange receiver to a low-end model, I did expect that I'd be short a port or two. I ended up moving my NES Mini and SNES Mini closer to my TV and just connecting them to the TV while I was testing the Sony.
Note that you probably don't want anyone home while you do speaker calibration with this receiver; it's LOUD and it takes a little while to do. But once it's done, you find that it's worth it as your speakers will sound great after they're calibrated. I was using Energy Take Classics in a 7 channel configuration, using my rear surrounds as rear speakers and my surround channels (which are mounted over my seating area) as my Atmos/DTSX vertical channels. I also used a pair of Onkyo speakers that came with a HTIB I purchased over a decade ago just to see how it would perform with low-end speakers - it's nowhere near as crisp as it could be.
For testing, I used a few Blu-Rays in the collection (Star Wars - the Last Jedi, Suicide Squad), a couple of movies from Vudu, Amazon, and Netflix (streaming through my Apple TV 4K), and Dolby Atmos and DTSX testing material played through my computer (Core i7 with a Radeon RX550 video card and HDMI set for bitstream audio output). The Apple TV and computer both support HDR10, and the Apple TV supports Dolby Vision, but my TV set (a Sony XBR850C) with the current firmware supports HDR10 and HLG, so the only HDR format I was able to test was HDR10.
(Note - Sony TVs and receivers usually integrate with each other, but I didn't see if this did or not as the TV didn't make it obvious.)
The results were spectacular, however. 4K HDR playback was flawless and the audio had a very encompassing feeling. While watching a streaming copy of Sing, my kid would look around the living room as the sound field fooled him into thinking he was in the Moon Theater. Bass management was also great, as the receiver pulled the audio too low for the Energy Take Classics to play and sent it to my subwoofer. The only complaint - and again, this is to be expected for this receiver - is it isn't as loud as my Onkyo can be, but since it's not as powerful, that's expected.
Bluetooth functionality was also pretty good. While the sound quality isn't as good as AirPlay or direct playback, it's good enough for 90% of people. DSD and 192/24 audio files sounded amazing, considering the price of the receiver.
The changes I'd make this this receiver:
Banana jack-capable speaker connectors for all 7 channels
2 more HDMI ports, including 1 up front
Phono connector
Network connectivity
Analog video conversion (2 composite, 2 component)
Would I make this unit my daily driver? Probably not, as I like it loud. However, for anyone looking at forming the foundation of their home theater, this is a terrific start. The only word of advice I'd give you is don't skimp on speakers - honestly, better speakers make even low-end equipment sound better.

Great range, flexible placement and usage options
on April 15, 2018
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
I was given this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
TL;DR - The Moho Sail is the antenna that guarantees you get every OTA channel in your metropolitan area, and a few that should be considered out of range. I was able to receive signals transmitted about 60 miles away from my home when using the amplifier, which also didn't cause signals being transmitted within 10 miles from home to be overpowered while in use. Thunderstorms didn't cause too much signal loss compared to non-amplified antennas or small amplified antennas. All in all, an easy to assemble, high-quality product.
Assembly - This couldn't have been any easier to put together. A couple of brackets, some screws, wing nuts - the only tools you'll want for assembly are a phillips screwdriver and maybe a pair of pliers.
Installation - This can be as simple (single TV) or as complicated (multiple TVs and fancy wiring) as you'd like it to be. I went for simple and non-permanent for now, and the only thing that made it more difficult than installing an indoor antenna was getting into my attic (I already had a cutout and cable passthrough for the TV I tested with). If you can cut rectangular holes, screw things into walls or ceilings (depending on where you want wires running from and how comfortable you are with wire fishing , and screw cables into your TV set (or a tuner box), this won't be a problem to install for you. The worst part is getting into your attic or on your roof.
Usage - screw in the F connectors to the antenna, power injector, and your TV, connect USB power (either from your TV, a STB or network tuner if the device can provide 5 watts/1 amp over USB, or the included power adapter), and program your TV or tuner to receive OTA channels. That's it. You'll find that you're able to receive all your local channels clearly (any transmitter within 25 miles), and even some distant stations should work (I was able to receive a signal with very little breakup from a TV transmitter approximately 60 miles from my home). One thing I noticed with severe weather in my area is lightning did very little to interrupt the signal.
Drawbacks - the power injector has to be placed between the antenna and TV or splitter (determined by how you do your installation) and both the signal output lead and USB lead from the power injector are permanently connected. A nice option would be a power injector with F connectors on either side (so the end user isn't stuck with a short lead) and the option for a longer power lead (which would be useful with more advanced installations that lack nearby power connections). Also, keep in mind that if you do decide to install this antenna on the exterior of your home, you'll need a grounding block and solid copper grounding wire to ground both the mounting arm and the coax (I believe 8 gauge is the bare minimum) and meet the NEC requirements. Because of this, I'd recommend an attic installation.
All in all, this is a terrific antenna. The power injector problems can be fixed later (and I'd even pay $10 for a power injector of that style should one become available. This is also perfect for households that are "cutting the cord" and use network TV tuner boxes, network DVR systems, or computer and STB-based solutions for viewing live TV.

Great range, flexible placement and usage options
on March 21, 2018

Disclaimer - I received this device in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
TL;DR - The Linksys RangeMax RE9000 AC3000 range extender is a no-compromises device with several usage scenarios. Beyond its intended functionality as a range extender, it also works as a wireless-to-ethernet bridge, an access point, and a gigabit network switch. Range is terrific, speed is terrific, and the fact that it doesn't plug directly into the wall addresses the shortcomings of many other range extenders, including other models from Linksys.
If you've ever set up a Linksys device before, this should come naturally to you. It works with both the Linksys Smart WiFi app on Android and Apple devices, and using a web browser on your desktop or laptop computer. The Linksys Smart WiFi app makes the process somewhat easier and more automated, but it's still easy either way you go.
If you have a Linksys RangeMax router already, you can configure this range extender to seamlessly extend your network. It will use one of the two 5GHz connections to pair with your router and connect as quickly as possible.
If you have an older router you want to keep using as your primary router (Apple AirPort Time Capsule, for example) or a wired-only router solution that you want to add wireless connectivity to (an unit that doubles as a VPN endpoint, for example), this is a great solution as it adds three wifi connections with fast wifi speeds (2.4GHz 400mbps N, 5GHz 867mbps AC, and 5GHz 1733mbps AC). It's also great for large homes and wanting to add a secondary access point over a wired network connection.
Probably the only drawback to this device is the design, but large external antennas are better for signals than more stylish solutions that lack external antennas.
All in all, this is a step in the proper direction for range extenders.

An okay choice for cord-cutters with Sling TV
on February 18, 2018
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
(Please note that I received a review unit in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.)
TL;DR review - The AirTV Player is an interesting choice when it comes to cutting the cord. Unlike every other device on the market, it doesn't have to be completely dependent on the internet to provide you with live entertainment choices, as it can directly receive OTA broadcasts. The hardware performs well, all things considered. However, the lack of RAM and storage, no DVR capability with broadcast TV, along with the lack of compatible apps in Google Play that are available on competing Android TV devices limit the appeal of this device at this time.
Full Review:
The AirTV Player by isn't the first Android TV device I've owned, but it's certainly the most promising to what the platform is capable of when it comes to being a media streamer. It's a very capable playback device, with 4k video output (likely HDR capable after an update). It supports a wide range of apps from the Google Play store, from additional video sources beyond what's included to games and a wide range of things in-between. It also does something no set-top box - and a growing number of TV sets - don't do - it functions as an over-the-air TV tuner, with or without a subscription to Sling's TV service.
First, the hardware. Inside the package, you'll find the AirTV Player, the remote, the AC adapter, the USB TV tuner, and a short USB extension cable (which you'll need). You'll also find a credit for $50 toward Sling TV service and instruction manual. Everything is packaged well and, other than a sticker that feels out of place, it has an Apple-like experience to opening the packaging.
Some of you may not like the aesthetic of the AirTV - white with light-blue trim and a dimly-glowing orangish light to indicate that it's powered on, I get that. Personally, I'm not a fan and would love to see it in black with a user-selectable color for the LED indicator. On the backside of the box, you'll find power, ethernet, 2 USB ports, HDMI, and optical audio output, the last of which is something that most competitors in the streaming media player space now lack and can be useful for those who either want to use this box as a target for audio playback (Chromecast, Pandora, Spotify, and others are supported either natively or with apps) or that have older home theater setups with receivers that lack HDMI and/or TVs that can't pass through Dolby Digital audio. One thing it's sorely lacking, and I'll get into that later, is a SD card slot; it could also benefit from additional USB ports. I also would like to see the power supply built into this device instead of the choice they went with (which can block outlets on some surge strips).
I'm also not a fan of the remote - white it's width and soft, rubbery texture feels good in my hand, the off-center buttons that control the device with a column on the left side for power/standby, volume, mute, and a button marked with a diamond that sends you to Android TV's home screen (not a very intuitive design choice, btw) is something that takes a bit to learn and get used to. It does have one feature that every remote with RF or Bluetooth connectivity should have, however - a remote finder function.
In terms of performance, The AirTV gets it in spite of its limitations - it's snappy through through the menu system, boots quickly, loads apps quickly, and doesn't seem to have too many problems streaming media (I tested using Netflix, Crackle, YouTube, and the Chromecast Receiver feature with 2.4GHz wireless N, 5GHz wireless AC, and a wired connection, and all performed very well). The box also has HDMI and two USB ports, one of which you'll lose to the USB-connected TV tuner (which happens to be manufacturer by Hauppauge - probably the best decision made with this entire hardware package). The best part of having a TV tuner that isn't integrated into the AirTV directly will become apparent when ATSC 3.0 starts hitting the airwaves; if Sling TV allows it, you'll be able to upgrade the tuner that comes with this box with a 4k-capable TV tuner as the next switchover occurs.
The limitations of the hardware are silly, however, especially for the price of this device - 1GB of RAM, a Cortex A53-based processor at 1.2GHz, and 8GB of internal storage (of which you only get 5GB as user storage). These stats would have been justifiable for the price two years ago, but even with the TV tuner included, this device is now more expensive than it should be.
Second, the software. I'm going to give you the perspective of someone who isn't interested in SlingTV, because I'm really not interested in the service. I will say though, that the AirTV Player is HEAVILY SLANTED towards subscribers of Sling TV's service; you could say it's the set-top box they've been waiting for. You can bypass the Sling app, but you'll have to disable it to do so as I haven't found any root exploits for this device yet that would allow you to change what it starts up with. (Maybe an option of starting in Leanback or Sling would be nice.)
Sling TV's software handles the TV tuner with the sort of ease that you'd expect it to. As you go through the channels, you'll find that it tunes as quickly as any TV set or digital TV tuner does. It also makes it easy to change through sub-channels; where TV sets and many digital TV tuners require that you punch in which subchannel you want (41.1, 41.2, etc) or they default to the now-defunct analog channel, you just highlight the channel you want and click the OK button. What's very surprising, however, is the lack of DVR functionality - recording, time-shifting (play/pause), and things of that nature. I would happily add an external hard drive to this box in order to pause live TV and make recordings, and if Sling offered upgraded tuners (2 or 4 channel) or compatibility to other USB and network tuners already on the market (Hauppauge and Silicone Dust units among others) along with room-to-room communication for these boxes to share DVR recordings (and possibly allow them to sync to devices or stream OTA away from home) they would have a real alternative to competing services like DirecTV's Genie, Comcast's X1, and other multi-room DVR services that cost far more for the monthly fee.
Android TV proves itself to be great once again in my eyes. Though a Nougat update has been promised, this box shipped with Marshmallow. While it doesn't feel as snappy overall as Nougat on my Sony XBR850C, it's still fairly quick and easy to use. Bluetooth pairing is straight-forward and supports most standard Bluetooth devices. I'll add a reply to this review when Nougat finally hits.
The disappointing things are the apps that work with my Sony TV but don't work with the AirTV Player, the biggest one being Amazon Video. Also, the aforementioned lack of USB ports and storage options isn't great, especially since the 8GB of built-in storage can be filled very quickly with apps and games (which many of you will undoubtedly add to this box). The current lack of HDR video output is also disappointing; after doing some research, this is a hardware limitation. The Play Store software issues will sort themselves out as more developers test and certify this device runs their apps.
All in all, the AirTV player, for me, is a start toward something good. However, it's needing a hardware refresh at this point because for what you're getting, you're paying too much for the hardware.
I can only recommend this to friends that use Sling TV service. If you want Android TV as your smart TV platform, either go with a Sony TV set or there is a competing Android TV box from another manufacturer with similar performance and half the cost.

They're decent, but not my first choice
on January 17, 2018
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
(Disclaimer - I received these headphones in exchange for a fair and honest review.)
TL;DR - Plantronics BackBeat 505 headphones: for the price, I expected better sound quality and overall fit, especially after my experience with the earbuds that are also part of the BackBeat series. They're not bad headphones, but they're just not great headphones.
With the BackBeat 505s, it's not that they're bad headphones. The fit and finish of the set is rather nice, the build quality is impeccable and matches something twice its price thanks to metal reinforcement. Soft touch materials cover the entire pair of headphones, and the subdued graphics are a very nice touch. On-headphone controls are logically laid out and have the right amount of responsiveness. They're comfortable to wear once you figure out your fit - more on that later. Voice quality while taking calls is actually the bright point here - HD calling, skyping, FaceTime, and other services that can take advantage of HD voice sound better than any other headphones I've heard, and many sets of ear buds and hands-free devices that normally clip to your ear.
These are also marketed as "sport" headphones. I can definitely see these being used for being active. Once you find the right fit, you can move around and they don't go anywhere. While the fit is a little tight for casual listening, you'll appreciate it while getting another set in on the bench, getting another half mile on the treadmill, or another 30 seconds of thrashing motion while using the battle ropes.
In my case, the biggest problem I have with the 505s is the sound quality. I tried them both wired and wireless with my iPhone 6s and my Moto Z Play using different sources for music (Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon, Pandora, and SoundCloud). It's not bad sound quality, but for what these headphones cost, it should be better. Vocals are terrific, as they should be for a Plantronics product - after all, they built their brand on being the company that makes call center headsets and hands-free ear clips. The problems are a lack of oomph behind the bass throughout the entire volume range and a harshness in the higher volumes. This isn't isolated to wired or wireless, either; it's drivers that should be better than they are.
On fit - I have a large head. While I love cans and generally detest earbuds, I have a problem finding cans that allow me to be more active without moving around on me too much. I have a couple of pairs that fit well from other manufacturers in both the proper orientation and in the "behind the head" style. While the 505s fit wearing the headband behind my head, I couldn't get them to fit properly while wearing them with the headband going over the top of my head. The issue for me is the shape of the headband arcing instead of going straight down. So while competing headsets come down in a direction that allows for a great fit flat against my ears, the 505s come out and the ear pads rest against my ear canal instead of my outer ear. It makes it very uncomfortable. Your head is likely smaller than mine, so these headphones will probably fit you much better than they do me.
Other pack-in things include a 3.5 to 3.5 audio cable with no mic, a short micro USB cable, and a mesh carrying/storage bag. The bag is definitely a nice touch, as many headphones in this price range don't include storage of any kind. The short micro USB cable is alright, but you'll want a longer cable for charging. The audio cable is longer than I expected, which is a nice touch, but lacks a mic, a control button, and is "I feel as if I'm going to break this" thin. Since it uses the industry-standard connection, however, picking up a thicker headphone cable isn't a problem.
All in all, the Plantronics BackBeat 505 headphones aren't bad. They just don't stand out in a crowded price point with several much better choices.
(Note that my recommendation to buy them is for those with smaller heads. For those with larger heads, I'd say these would be a hard pass.)

JBL sound quality and Google's answers
on December 11, 2017
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
At first glance, you'd think the JBL Link10 bluetooth speaker with Google Assistant would have some sort of compromise. A wireless speaker with good battery life and the Google assistant.
Sound quality? Stellar for its size. While bass isn't as deep as you'd get with a large speaker, it's still very deep for something not much smaller than a "tall boy" beer can. Everything I threw at it, from Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" to the soundtrack to Disney's "Moana" to Eminem's "MMLP2" sounded great, with a nice, full sound I've come to expect from James B. Lansing and Company.
Google assistant? Works well. The mic array works from other rooms without a problem, in an echoey basement without a hitch, and outside on a windy day from 15 feet.
Battery life? I didn't drain it all the way but 6 hours was nothing for it.
Another thing this speaker has is an IPX7 rating. I wasn't willing to throw it under water.
All in all, great speaker.

Great prosumer photo and video editing suite
on December 11, 2017
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
I've been a user of Adobe Products for a while now, before CS Suite was a thing. Premiere wasn't my preferred video editing program, though it did some things better than its competitors. Photoshop, however, is a program that's in a class by itself when it comes to image editing.
When the Elements series of programs came out years ago, I did obtain copies to see what was missing and what wasn't. At that point, Photoshop Elements was okay but Premiere Elements wasn't something I could recommend, especially for Mac users.
Fast-forward to today, and I can recommend both Photoshop Elements 2018 and Premiere Elements 2018. Both programs no longer feel like cut-down versions of their CC suite counterparts, though some features are missing that professionals would miss (especially high bit-depth photo editing in PSElements). However, it more than makes up for this for the prosumer with automation, file organization, and a much more shallow learning curve.
Two things I can recommend with this software, however:
1) RAM is your friend. Both programs can run with 4GB of RAM, but they're much more usable with 8GB (Mac) or 12GB (Windows 10).
2) Quality source material. Your phone likely has a good camera, but the stock camera app likely isn't great at handling things like ISO, white balance, and shutter speed. Find a camera app that allows you to fully control your camera. Or if you can afford a high-quality dedicated camera, go that route instead.

Really good bass for buds
on November 14, 2017
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
Disclaimer - I received this product in return for my fair and unbiased opinion.
TL;DR -
If you're like me and you've worked in a call center or three, you automatically associate the name Plantronics with telephone headsets. However, bluetooth headphones is another category of product that you should consider Plantronics as one of the first brands you'd look at. In the few days I've had them, the BackBeat FIT 305 headphones have proven to be a capable set of buds for anywhere you're active. They definitely stay in place, they seal out most of the ambient audio in any environment, the wires from the control module to the buds themselves feels very sturdy and well made, and I was able to get around 6.5 hours out of a battery that was supposed to be good for 6 hours. They're better than some wired buds I've had in the same price class, and they're better than some Bluetooth buds that are twice the price. All in all, they're a great value for what they are and I recommend them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unboxing experience and design -
Inside the package, you'll find the BBFit 305 headset, a short micro USB cable for charging, three sizes of earbud tips (medium tips are preinstalled on the headset), the instruction and warranty information, and a carrying pouch for when you're on the go.
The headset itself has thicker wires than I'm used to seeing on earbuds, complete with a woven sleeve with reflective material over the wires.
All three pairs of earbud tips have "wings" on them to help hold them into your ears. I found these a little annoying at first, but soon got used to them.
Setup -
Pairing is the same as on most other earbuds of this style - press and hold the multifunction button until red and blue lights flash back and forth. I was able to instantly pair these with an iPhone 6s, a Moto Z Play (2016), a Windows 10 PC with Bluetooth 4, and a Mac with ease. The charge port is easy to get to, and the size of the control module makes this set of earbuds easy to deal with for people that have problems holding onto smaller control switches.
Performance and audio quality -
Music across most genres sounded decent enough. Treble was strong, midrange was slightly under-represented but vocals were still clear, and bass was surprisingly strong. Metal, hip-hop, pop, and classical all sounded pretty good overall. In particular, Muse's "Knights of Cydonia" was one of my favorite listens with these earbuds, coming very close to the level of a pair of full-sized headphones at twice the cost that I reviewed earlier this year.
Using a tone generator on the iPhone 6s, I tested to see how low they can go. Using a sine wave, I registered 18.5 hz in the app before the audio became totally inaudible. Not just that, but this was bass you could feel in your ear canals, where many earbuds
Voice quality is awesome. HD Voice (LTE Voice, carrier WiFi calling, Apple FaceTime, and Facebook video chat) all sounded as if the other person was in the same room, and the other end had no complaints on my voice versus using the regular handset or speakerphone on either the Moto or the iPhone.
I also had a marathon session of Portal 2 on the Mac. Using Apple's Wireless Keyboard (A1314 or the 2 AA version) and Magic Mouse (2 AA version) as input devices, I didn't experience audio skips or connection dropping on all the Bluetooth devices. This gave me the chance to test the battery out - after 6 and a half hours of gaming, the little voice finally came up warning me that I had a low battery.
I also tested these out at the gym, and no matter how hard I was working myself (battle ropes anyone?), these earbuds were not coming out. They also stood up to sweat as if it were nothing. Ambient sounds were also nearly drown out by these headphones.
Summary -
All in all, these are great earbuds. Plantronics proves that they're more than just a good headset for a call center with a pair of buds that sound great, no matter what they're doing. Especially for the price. You can spend the same money on wired earbuds and get something with both lesser build quality and audio quality. You can spend twice as much on Bluetooth earbuds from other brands that don't sound as good and aren't made as well. Or you can be smart with your money and get a pair of ear buds that have both great audio quality and build quality.

Premium speaker with a lot of tricks up its sleeve
on October 27, 2017
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
(Disclaimer - I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.)
Overview - The Sony Wireless Speaker LFS50G would be a pretty decent product by itself as just a network-connected music player for the kitchen. Add in Google Assistant with all of it's neat tricks, however, and you have a speaker and all the answers you could ever need. Audio quality is very balanced - no overpowering treble, bass you know is there but doesn't drown out everything, and clear vocals. The microphone array is very powerful - it can understand me from across the house. Also, every facet of this product is premium, from the unboxing experience to the way it looks wherever you place it.
----------------------------------------------
Unboxing:
You know the experience Apple gives us for unboxing their electronics? Well, Sony copied it perfectly. It's not a complaint, it's a compliment. It's also gives you the feeling of the "BIG REVEAL" as the box it comes in separates out.
The product itself:
You have the typical Sony build quality - it looks high-end, it feels high-end, it has some heft to it, and the materials used both look and feel great. Plastics are soft and smooth, the ring along the bottom of it feels like actual metal and not plastic, and it's actually using speaker grill cloth and not a hard plastic that looks like speaker cloth. One really cool thing about the speaker cloth is it's also somewhat transparent to light, which allowed Sony to put a LED display onto this speaker to display things like the volume level and the time.
Setup couldn't be easier. I used my iPhone 6s, since Google tends to prefer making the experience easier with Android devices. Went through without a single hitch, the device found my network very quickly and connected with ease. Note that this speaker does connect to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.
The sound quality is pretty good, especially for the size of this device. While it's not going to have room-shaking bass, lows are rather punchy. For example, The Weeknd's "The Hills Have Eyes" bass line came through clear, even at full volume. Classical music sounded great through this device as well. Avenged Sevenfold's "Nightmare" also had clear vocals, Mike Portnoy's drum work was punchy, and everything was balanced in terms of overall sound quality.
Google Assistant is really the star of the show, however. You can tell it what you want to listen to on Google Play Music, YouTube Red, Spotify, and Pandora, and it queues up your choice nearly instantly. If you have home automation devices, such as light bulbs, switches, thermostats, and more, Google Assistant can control any of that stuff with ease. It pairs very easily as long as you follow the instructions for how to do so.
One other feature of this speaker is the ability to MUTE the microphone. Don't want Google Assistant listening? Do you have friends over that fear AI assistants? Hit the mute button and it doesn't listen to you.
My only annoyance with this device is, while slightly intuitive, the touch controls are somewhat annoying to learn. While you can use Bluetooth or the Google Home to control the device volume level, you may not always have your phone handy to do so.
All in all, the The Sony Wireless Speaker LFS50G is a good product. Lots of features, good sound quality, and the ability to control home automation with your voice are all things that make this a winner.

One word - WOW.

Disclaimer - I received this product in exchange for my fair and honest opinion.
I'm going to make this review short and sweet, because the Philips-Norelco OneBlade Pro is just nothing short of awesome. It does a great job of not only trimming and grooming facial hair, but also shaving facial and other body hair.
The Pro version has several advantages over the standard version - a quick-charging lithium ion battery with twice the battery life of the standard version, a display to show how much battery life remains (by percentage), and less tacky device styling. It also comes with a removable blade guard that's adjustable from 0.4mm to 10mm and actually locks into place.
It also comes with a docking station to make charging simple and keep the OneBlade Pro close at hand, as it looks at home on your bathroom vanity top. For travel, it also comes with a handy pouch that you can toss into your suitcase or carry-on.
Replacement blades are also inexpensive and long-lasting - two blades normally run about $25 and last 4 months with daily use.
There's nothing bad I can say about the OneBlade Pro. It's one of those things that just lives up to the hype that surrounds it.
I don't just recommend this - I whole-heartedly recommend this. If you want one tool that can shave and trim, this is it.

This TV has an ATSC tuner.
August 27, 2015
There's no guarantee that ATSC tuners will work with ClearQAM cable channels, and even so, the greater majority of cable providers now scramble all cable channels. Including OTA channels. Because the FCC changed the rules and they're allowed to do this now.

Big Time 3-D problems
By Mike
I am writing to review the “XBR-55X850C”. HOWEVER, I have read multiple web pages that state this problem is happening with all Sony 3-D televisions, in the United States AND Europe, and that customers are not receiving ANY customer service, or any help from Sony whatsoever.
I have called 3 times and have been hung up on each time.
So, if you are looking for a great 3-D experience and excellent SONY customer service, LOOK ELSEWHERE. Sony rolled out an update for this television at the end of November of 2015. After the update, when viewing 3-D content, the display mode function of the current screen is continuously showing the current screen mode of the television. ALL THE TIME. Coming in and out up to 7 times a minute.
So, while watching a 3-D movie, every 5 to 60 seconds, the words “Wide Mode Full” flashes on the screen in the lower left hand corner. It NEVER stops. Sony is aware of this problem, unfortunately, Sony customer service is rude & unhelpful with this issue. They claim that “Sony is aware of this and is working on an update”. When I asked when the update would be released, Sony representatives claim they do not know when this update will be available.
Every Sony representative has hung up on me after not being able to satisfactorily answer the simplest of questions.
Anyone looking for a great 3-D experience, look elsewhere. Sony does not care about this problem. After all, they already have our money.
If you think this is the same old Sony with great products, high standards, and great customer service, THINK AGAIN! This is not your father’s Sony. This is the new, corporate Sony that just wants your money.
Everyone out there looking for a good 3-D T.V. should stick with Samsung. I wish I did. I thought I was “upgrading” from Samsung to Sony.

...things get fixed after they get broken. I have this TV as well, and customer service people have no idea when Android Marshmallow will hit this TV set, let alone any of the other 2015 Sony TVs. Considering the Google Nexus Player got borked by the update though, that's probably a good thing the update hasn't hit yet.

Hard To Program
By FortFun2 from Illinois
Found it is difficult, not intuitive, to program. Others have said if you loose power all your programming is lost, but we haven't lost power yet so can't confirm. I just wanted it to run when I left the house without a set program and contacting Bissell just led to more confusion. But, once I got it working I was impressed with the amount of pet hair it removed.

if your Blu-Ray player isn't connected to the internet, connect it to the internet and update its firmware. That should fix all your issues.

This is the future of WiFi
By neio11
I threw (recycled) away my wifi extenders plus I am now able connect a device with an ethernet cable without having to run cables through the walls because each node has 2 ethernet ports. So for instance, I have one node connected to my modem and an ethernet switch. My 2nd node in another room is connected to an NVR for my security cameras. The speed through the nodes is surprisingly fast. The NVR is capturing HD videos from 3 cameras and it seems to capture fine. The 3rd node is in my living room area. The whole house is covered! Please put a password on your wifi otherwise you'll be supplying FREE wifi for your neighbors. I can have full internet access from 3-4 houses away from my house. I thought installation would be a pain considering you have to setup each node. Well, I shouldn't say "have to" because you don't have to use all 3 nodes. You can use only 1 or 2 and give the 3rd to me. haha. No but setup is a breeze! The only thing is that you have to use a smart device such as a tablet or phone, to do the setup. Velop currently doesn't support PC-based setup but I hope Linksys changes that especially for us "techies"!!! It works with Alexa. You can ask #Alexa what the wifi password is... so they say. I haven't had much success with it yet. It looks clean and neat. It doesn't all those antennas sticking out of it which makes it aesthetically pleasing.
I'm loving so far!

The setup process basically forces you to put a...

...password on your WiFi network. In fact, it's one of three things it asks when you set up the parent node, the other two being "Do you connect directly to the internet or through a modem/router device provided by your ISP?" and what to call your wireless network.

Blazing Speed, Best In Class Performance!
By gadgetguy11
The Linksys - Velop Tri-Band Whole Home Wi-Fi System (3-pack) is packaged in a beautiful & functional box with magnetic closure - it exudes quality! Each Node is protected individually. Just looking at the box, you expect a premium, esoteric product... & Linksys delivers that & more in spades! The shapely Nodes are beautiful & blend with any decorating style.
Simple set-up via the Linksys iOS or Android App. Within minutes, you are ready to go online.
As shown in attached photo, I have 90 wireless devices utilized over 5,000 sq feet / 3 floors: this is a challenging application for high speed Wi-Fi that includes: connected major appliances; BAS ceiling fans & Haiku Wi-Fi connected lights; Wi-Fi Thermostats; Netatmo Wi-Fi Weather Station; 65 Hue Lights; Connected exterior door locks; Wink Wi-Fi connected devices; connected iDevices, Nest & Arlo cameras; iPads; iPhones & computers. Finally, Streaming from 4) Apple TV's; Nixplay Wi-Fi Photo Frames.
And now the Results:
Velop delivers the fastest Wi-Fi speed I have ever experienced and does so consistently! The attached screen capture shows 349 Mbps Download / 23 Mbps Upload. These are WIRELESS speeds!! I pay for 300 Mbps Download / 30 Mbps Upload & our internet service provider generally delivers 300 - 360 Download & 22 - 32 Upload.
Velop is the only Wi-Fi System I have found to date that actually delivers this sustainable speed and does not randomly disconnect the many devices.
High power Wi-Fi requires a high current source. Each of the 3) square white power supplies produce 12 Volt, 2 Amp output! 24VA (Volt Amps) is the highest output of any router I have tested. Better yet, the cable that plugs into each Velop is perfectly angled at the plug so the wire routs neatly through the cable management feature at the base. Brilliant design!
PRO's:
1- Fastest Wi-Fi Speed
2- Easy approximate 10 minute Set-up per hub
3- Velop Nodes are very attractive & blend with any architecture
4- Robust infrastructure yields dependable performance
5- 24/7 Support
6- 3-Year Warranty
7- Easy to use App with great diagnostics
8- Wire Management at the base is excellent & offers a wire free appearance.
9- Three Velop Nodes establish fast Wi-Fi speed across the house on any floor.
10- Expandable: Add an additional Node any time you prefer.
CON's:
1- IP Address range cannot be changed from: 192.***. My 2) existing Apple Time Capsule / Routers had IP addresses of 10.***, but they can be set to different ranges. A different IP Address range requires individually resetting a few devices that previously connected to the other range. For example, each Nixplay connected frame had to manually "Forget" the old Wi-Fi name of the previous SSID, then set up the same name with Velop, even though the Wi-Fi name and password are the same. On 13) Apple Airport Express devices, I had to power down each device to reset it from 10.*** to 192.***
2- IPv6 is not supported as of product release. This is surprising, as my three year old Apple Time Capsule / Router supported IPv6.
3- The first unit set up in under 10 minutes; however the remaining two hubs froze at the same exact place midway every time during set-up. After 6 failed attempts, I held each Node horizontally and kept my hand around it. Surprisingly, this procedure resulted in a virtually immediate set-up! Then I set each Node vertically & it continued to work great.
4- Only one Node can connect to the internet via ethernet. The other Nodes connect to the first Node via wireless mesh connection. I would prefer the option of connecting each Node to a wired ethernet connection. Linksys Technical Support indicated this may be added later as a software update. This would prove beneficial because the Nodes must be located fairly close together (my tests showed less than 40 feet apart at most).
CONCLUSION: My search for the "Ideal" Whole Home Wi-Fi System that consistently delivers 300 Mbps over 5,000 square feet with 90 devices ends here!! I am THRILLED with Velop & give it my highest recommendation!! It has proven to be the BEST ROUTER available for 2017!

It stores data on the camera itself and not on a Homebase module. However, you still access the video like you would with Homebase-connected cameras - via the app.

All antennas that work with ATSC 1.0 work with ATSC 3.0. In fact, all TV antennas that work on the standard UHF range (which means nearly every antenna, ever) work with ATSC 3.0 receivers and TV sets.

Can this be used with IPad Pro 10.5 inch

It can if you used a Camera Connection Kit and a Powered USB 3.x Hub. The lightning port by itself doesn't output enough power to run this drive.

For newer iPad Pros with USB-C connectors, you could just use a USB-C to USB 3.0 Micro B cable.

Either way, you'd need to format this drive using a computer first to a supported format (I believe that would be either ExFAT, HFS+, or APFS).

Does this need a 3.0 slot to work correctly on an xbox series x? Will it work in a usb hub on the xbox series x with only 2.0 slots available?

It can work with a USB 2.0 hub, but it will run at approximately 1/3 the speed you'd get with a USB 3.x connection (40 megabyte per second transfers on USB 2.0 versus 120 megabyte per second transfers over USB 3.x).

Will it work with a Xbox 360 E console?

It should, but you'd be better off with a less expensive external drive as the Xbox 360 series of devices do not have USB 3.0 connections and even the slowest of external drives currently available can saturate a USB 2.0 connection.
