WARNING: Display is *not* actually 4K
on November 12, 2016
Posted by: edit1754
from NC
This laptop claims a resolution of 3840x2160. Normally, a screen having a particular resolution means it has that many individual square groups that each have all three components necessary to display: red, green, and blue.
This laptop's screen puts red/green in one square, then blue/white in the next, and alternates. No square contains all three primaries at once, and the purpose of the added white component is to fudge brightness ratings at the cost of color reproduction.
The result is jagged edges and an overall poorer quality picture than true 4K, because of a critical difference *not* stated in the specs. Yes, it looks great compared to a lot of other laptop displays, but you're not getting what you're being advertised.
See attached images. First is false-4K RG/BW pentile structure of this laptop screen, second is true-RGB arrangement of the XPS 15's 4K screen, for comparison.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Awful display: Not true to the ATIV Book 9 name.
on October 1, 2013
Posted by: edit1754
from NC
Samsung had a great thing going with their ATIV Book 9 line of 13.3-inchers, formally known as the Series 9. They kicked off the line with the Samsung NP900X3A, which included a much better than average quality display with its deep blacks and strong colors. Although the 3A's display was still saddled with lowly 1366x768 resolution, Samsung upped their game with the NP900X3B/C/D models using their flagship 13.3" 1600x900 PLS display -- a display that not only let you fit more onscreen due to the resolution itself, also had downright excellent contrast and was able to retain its color fidelity from any viewing angle. They went further with the NP900X3E and NP900X3F whose display offered better color saturation and an even higher resolution of 1920x1080, and most recently blew all competition (including the Macbook Pro Retina) out of the water with their NP940X3G ("ATIV Book 9 Plus") and its 13.3" 3200x1800 display.
However, co-released with the ATIV Book 9 Plus was the major step backwards that is this ATIV Book 9 Lite -- which, as confirmed by my experience with the model, features an absolute piece-of-trash display. First, the ATIV Book 9 Lite goes back to the miniscule 1366x768 resolution of the NP900X3A, but that's not too bad in itself. The worst part is that the LCD panel Samsung chose to use in the 9 Lite is drastically inferior in quality to the one used in the NP900X3A, with a low contrast ratio that brings out grayish blacks and washed out colors, as well as quick color inversion from mildly off-axis viewing. In a day and age where you can get a decent display in a $300 tablet, I should at least be able to expect a somewhat decent display in a laptop costing more than twice as much ($749 as of writing). Many alternatives to this laptop do offer something decent when it comes to the display, but the display in this laptop is not a "decent" display -- it's actually pretty bad.
Now, as for what you should buy, one direct alternative that comes to mind is the ASUS U38N. The U38N is virtually the same as this laptop from a marketing-niche standpoint (13.3" ultraportable form-factor with touch), and has similar performance internals if you've got a need to be concerned with those, but comes with a significantly better 13.3" 1920x1080 IPS display. See if you can find one of those. Best Buy sells it online.
What's great about it: No complaints about performance
What's not so great: Display has 1366x768 resolution and an abysmal contrast ratio
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Excellent Gaming PC
By Ezfp from Colorado
I got this Laptop in Late May 2012 and have been using it daily for both school, and gaming. I havent had any problems with the motherboard or with it shutting down for no apparent reason(i maintain it). The only complaint I would have would be the price but it has been proving its value for nearly the past year, and like most high end laptops, they cost some money. I wouldnt recommend this laptop if you didnt have the money for it, but other than that its great.

Can you confirm that the display was 1920x1080 resolution and not 1600x900? If you can't confirm this, can you confirm that the display has a matte/non-glossy finish? (The 1920x1080 display is matte whereas the worse one is glossy).

Great laptop, but annoying bits of it.
By latvianxpert from Shakopee, MN
This is a fantastic laptop, but there's little bits of it that make it worse.
First of all, the hard drive really bottlenecks the speed. When booting up and trying to jump onto my browser or Steam, the hard drive slows the entire system down to the point where I have to wait like 5 minutes before I could actually use it.
Next, the resolution is kind of awkward considering the screen size. 17.3" really should use 1920x1080, not 1600x900.
Then, the battery life. It's pretty bad, since I get only around 4 hours before it has around 20% left (even on battery saver or Dell Recommended).
Finally, the graphics card. The main reason I bought the laptop for for heavy gaming and school, with games like Battlefield 3 and Far Cry 3. The graphics card is amazing, of course, but I constantly have the clock go from the default at 725 to like 150 when I'm in the menus or just randomly in-game. It really hurts my performance, even if I have it on low (even up to maxed!). I can play any game (except Crysis 3 of course) at maxed with like 10-20 frames, so I turn it down a bit.
I'm still using it to date, but I have tried returning it with incorrect information from a Best Buy representative. I walked in store being told I can wait up to 3 months to return it, and if it's past Best Buy's warranty they can send it to Dell. I told this to a representative and he instantly said that's not correct and told me he couldn't do anything about it. Disappointing and enraging.
I don't recommend this laptop because of all my problems with it. It might be just me, but I honestly regret buying it.

1600x900?

Did you buy this specific model, or a different model? There are different variants of the Inspiron 17R SE, some of which come with the decent display, and some of which do not.

Forget the Core i7. Avoid 1366x768.
By edit1754 from NC
The Display
- The 1366x768 resolution doesn't let you fit much onscreen, and in a 15.6" display it makes everything onscreen rather large. A lot of laptops offer 1920x1080-resolution IPS displays, which are less limiting as well as have immensely-better picture quality. This kind of a display difference I think will affect you a whole lot more than the differences between most other specs. My attached image compares screen realestate on 1366x768 versus 1920x1080, using the start menu.
The Processor
- This laptop might sound like a good value because it has a Core i7 at a lower than average price. But most normal computer use isn't affected by the differences between most processors, i3/i5/i7/whatever. And even if you do need CPU performance for something like video editing, you need a quad-core CPU. This is a dual-core CPU, it just happens to share the Core i7 branding with the others.
The GPU ("graphics card")
- Look up benchmarks online and you'll find that NVIDIA GT 920MX isn't much better than the Intel HD 620 that comes built into all 7th gen Intel GPUs, and in some cases is worse. If you're not gaming, you probably don't need a dedicated GPU. And if you do need a dedicated GPU, you probably need a better one than this. The 920X is just as good as not even having a dedicated GPU.
Overall, not a good value, in my opinion. Get a good display before you worry about the other stuff, you'll notice it more. My recommendation is to buy one of these instead. All have 1920x1080 IPS displays with touch.

Oh, my mistake! Guess I saw the 7 in 7200U and misread.
Rest of it still applies. And even for the current discounted price ($549) I still think it should include a better display than 1366x768.

I order this computer the other day through dell because I wanted the next model up.Plus they offer a 10% discount for anyone in the armed forces. It was a no brainer.
I was however concerned about the complaints about the screen. I contacted dell and they confirmed they are now being built with the IPS screen instead of the TN panel. Very excited to get this laptop and very happy with Dells customer service for listening to their customers.

Yeah I'm not sure if this is a misunderstanding on the reps part, if one rep told somebody that, the customer posted it online, then the rest of them found it on Google, or what.
I'm keeping track of these instances in this Reddit post, on the top: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/63pz2u/the_dell_inspiron_7567_tn_panel_facebook_page/

Great laptop for the price.

This laptop is by far the best deal in the whole store. This laptop comes with a gtx 1050 or a gtx 1050ti. And it is a great deal. It has a very nice 1920x1080 that some people call a tn panel but it has great viewing angles and it is just a good looking screen in general. Vert fast and responsive. There is a good amount of bloatware by dell but that is it. I would recommend this laptop to anyone that is looking for good budget gaming.

Can the screen be upgraded to 4k screen?

Assuming it's possible on this mobo version, you'll need at least:
- 4K panel
- 4K cable
- Likely different lid. The LCD mounting brackets are different I believe.

Is this the best gaming laptop under 1.2k? No two in ones they overheat break easly and have no dvd

For gaming, look at the GPU. The GPU (not the CPU not the RAM) is the main thing that makes games run faster. The 960M isn't bad, but you can easily get better, for 1.2k, if your main focus is gaming.

These will give you better game performance:
