Great Tablet from an Apple Fan
on March 17, 2017
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
First off, I’m an admitted Apple fan – but not one of the zealots who doesn’t give Android or Google credit where credit is due. With that in mind, I was very interested to hear about Samsung’s new iPad Pro challenger, the Tab S3. It looks to be about the same size and specs of the smaller iPad Pro and I figured that I should learn as much about Android as I could.
For starters, the overall design reminds me of a giant iPhone 4 – the back of the unit is a glossy black glass which looks really slick, but also attracts fingerprints like a magnet. Since the design of the Tab 3 makes it very slim, I found myself at time babying it more than I would my iPad. The weigh of the iPad made it feel sturdier. The Tab S3 felt much safer in the Samsung keyboard case – which is what I’m using to type this review up now.
Another cool point for the Tab was the inclusion of the S-Pen. With the Apple Pencil, you need to have an iPad Pro, sorry iPad Air owners, and it has a battery that needs to be recharged. The Samsun S-Pen made the leap from their phones to the tablet and it’s a welcome inclusion with requires no batteries! I found myself enjoying taking notes in my own handwriting versus typing, correcting and retyping.
Compared to the Apple keyboard case and the Microsoft Surface one, this is about the same class as the Apple one and even uses the same connector. I really think that the Surface has the best tablet-to-keyboard configuration out there today. The keyboard doesn’t require a charge to use, which is nice. The keys are reasonably spaced out and typing I comfortable. Just note, the keyboard is an extra accessory that’ll set you back another $130.
One of the pain points with Android is a minor, but glaring issue to anyone who’s more familiar with Apple’s ecosystem. There’s the Google apps that are baked into the OS but then there’s Samsung’s apps that do pretty much the same thing installed right along side. With iOS, it’s more like a single sign-on process. When setting this up, I felt the signing into Samsung and Google to be redundant and annoyance.
I found the Tab S3 to be snappy and very responsive. The screen is bright and beautiful boasting HDR support. The audio quality in watching movies was superb for a tablet, but it makes sense since Samsung is advertising the audio performance and balancing as a marquee feature. The ability to add additional storage is nice since the Tab S3 only comes in a 32GB option. Not a deal breaker, but when you start adding movies and pictures and apps, you can lose that space very quickly.
Something else to consider is that if, like me, you have a mixed OS environment, you may fin yourself in the position of having to pay for the same apps. Meaning, you can’t really transfer purchases from iOS to Android or vice versa.
If you’re in the market for a slick Android tablet then the Tab S3 is the one for you. I’ve been using it for a few days now and can honestly say that I continue to use it, even after the novelty of it being new wears off. If you’re heavily embedded into the Apple ecosystem, then I’d say invest in the smaller iPad Pro – or wait until the newer ones are released this year.
If you're looking to replace an laptop with a tablet, then I'd say to give the Galaxy Tab S3 serious consideration.

Nice Upgrade from DC-07 Animal
on March 14, 2017
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
I've been a loyal Dyson user since my first DC-07 Animal that I got back in 2005. I dropped $500 on a vacuum and thought it was crazy, but after seeing how much more it picked up compared to our old Kenmore vacuum, I was hooked.
Our DC-07 is a beast that has served us well over it's 12 years, but with the chance to upgrade to a v2 Ball, we jumped at the chance! I'm glad we did too!
Dyson's claim to fame is that the vacuums don't lose suction - and just like the DC-07, I was surprised by how strong the v2 was. I ran a path in our bedroom, which has thick carpet, with the DC-07 and then ran the v2 Ball over the same stretch. Not only did the v2 pick up more debris that the DC-07 left (see screenshot) but it actually took some muscle to maneuver it on the carpet because of how strong the pull of the vacuum was!
Like any vacuum, there's some assembly required, but nothing tedious and no tools required.
The first thing I noticed was how much smaller in size the vacuum and canister were in the v2 compared to the DC-07. While this may deter some users who don't want to stop more often, I was still able to vacuum the house on a single tank.
The v2 also comes with washable filters and a duster, crevice and furniture attachment. Which was nice, since those were really all we used on the DC-07 also.
One thing to be aware of - since the v2 Ball puts all the torque at the connection point, it can be harder to maneuver on thicker carpets than a traditional design like the DC-07. The trade off is how much more debris the v2 collects combined with the fact that the default head also doubles as a low-clearance head. Previously, if we wanted to get under the edges of the furniture, we had to use a different head altogether.
Dyson products aren't cheap - the v2 was $400, but one piece of advice my mom gave me was not to go cheap on a vacuum. I've been a happy Dyson customer for over 12 years and I expect, with the performance of the v2 Ball, I'll be a happy customer for another 12!
Pros
------
Extremely easy to maneuver on solid floors (tile, hardwood, etc)
Lighter weight due to newer build than DC-07
Powerful suction from a low-clearance head
Cons
-------
Ball design can make maneuvering on thick carpet more of a chore
Dyson still doesn't use a retractable cord design for power cord
Older attachments don't fit - not surprised after 12 years of design innovation
Overall
----------
If you're looking for a solid vacuum that is easy to lift, store and use - save your bananas and pony up for a Dyson. The only difference between the v2 Ball and v2 Animal are the attachments you get in the box. We went for the basic figuring we could always get more attachments later if needed.

Souped up Presenter Remote
on March 13, 2017
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
Initially, I would've rated this remote a 3-star item. As a corporate speaker and facilitator, it's my job to be on stage, in front of people giving lectures, hosting seminars, and training. The reason for the initial "meh" response was due to the fact that without the companion software from Logitech, there's no difference here than a $30 Targus presenter from your local Best Buy.
This is especially problematic since I had to jump through numerous hoops to get the Logitech software installed on my work laptop. Working in the financial services industry, security when installing new apps is paramount, I understood it, but it was a freaking headache.
From a design aspect, it's a brushed aluminum body that's very reminiscent of Apple's products - probably one reason why it's available in black, silver and gold. With the construction of the body not being plastic, the remote feels very solid in your hand and your thumb comes to rest very naturally on the "Next" button that's the largest of the three.
The remote can be paired with Bluetooth or via the USB dongle that's housed in the based of the remote. Since Bluetooth pairing is disabled by a group policy setting on my laptop, I used the dongle and found no issue - the reach was awesome. Not once during my workshop did the remote fail to respond, even as I walked all around the room.
The 4-star review comes after my experience using the remote with the Logitech software - holy cow! I don't think I'd ever go back to a basic presenter remote again.
You can customize aspects of the highlighter to go wide or narrow. You can also add some secondary functions to the "Next" and "Previous" buttons that I used to control the audio levels when I played videos I had embedded in the presentation.
Pros
------
* Sturdy / attractive design
* Wide range reach
* USB-C connection allows rapid charging
* Logitech Software unlocks more customization possibilities
Cons
------
*Price - at $120, this is a presenter remote best geared towards professional speakers
* Logitech Software needs corporate approval before being installed on machine
* Air Mouse function can be a bit spotty depending on the app your using
Bottom Line
----------------
If you're a professional public speaker or facilitator who regularly delivers seminars, workshops and executive presentations, this remote can really help up the wow factor in what you're delivering. If you're a junior facilitator or someone who doesn't give presentations regularly or doesn't have admin rights to install the Logitech software, then this remote is overkill. I was happy enough with it once I got it up and running that it's become my go-to presenter remote and I have no regrets there.

Great HD Video Security Option
on January 14, 2017
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
My wife and I recently invested in a home security system - but unfortunately, it didn't offer a video option. While we were at Best Buy, we came across the Arlo and Arlo Pro. I came home, did some reading and pulled the trigger and I'm really glad we did!
For starters, if you are thinking of the Arlo, spend some extra money and go for the Arlo Pro - you get weatherproof cameras as well as rechargeable batteries. So big bonus points for convenience and adaptability.
We set them up inside our house, one camera covering the front door and the other covering the back - the whole setup was pretty quick and painless. The batteries ship fully charged from the factory, so it's nice to not have to loose a day due to charging or swapping cameras and batteries. The core of the Arlo system is the Hub. During the setup, I found that the Hub requires an ethernet connection - so be sure you have space on a switch our router. There's no WiFi option for the Arlo, but since you're dealing with streaming HD video - that's not really a bad thing.
The Arlo app also has a special setup mode where it helps you point the camera to get the best angle and coverage. The cameras themselves come with really strong magnetic wall mounts, so you can place a wall mount where you want it and then attach the camera and point it where desired. During the setup, you'll need to press a button on the Hub and camera to sync them, and you can only sync one camera at a time - so be sure that you haven't hidden the Hub in a difficult to reach place.
Once you have them up and running, you can put the system into several modes: Armed, Disarmed and Scheduled. We use the Scheduled mode and leave it off while we're home and arm it around the time we normally leave the house. Here's where things get interesting - when my wife worked from home, my phone was blowing up with motion alerts from Arlo - I had over 70 in one day. That's when I realized that if someone was home, I'd have to disarm the Arlo otherwise I'd loose my battery just from alerts.
The video was captured in short, easy to watch clips and was pretty clear to watch. Another cool feature of the Arlo Pro is that basic cloud video capture is included for free - but there's other tiers you can opt in for an additional cost. We've had the system running for over a week now and the cameras still show a nearly full charge in the Arlo app - so it's nice to know that the cameras won't need frequent recharging breaks.
Bottom line - the Arlo Pro is a solid system that you can expand on and add cameras as needed. The Hub also is equipped with a siren, so if you get a video that something's wrong in your house, you can turn on an alarm as well. The Arlo Pro is a solid system so far and I think it's a great addition to our existing home security setup.

Solid WiFi with solid compromises
on January 13, 2017
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
I've been following the idea of mesh WiFi for a while now and when Linksys announced they were coming up with Velop, I was equal parts intrigued and excited. Mesh WiFi is different from a traditional router-and-extender setup because each node communicates on a dedicated 5GHz channel, so you're not dealing with degraded WiFi strength if you're being routed through the extender. Sadly, that excitement was short lived.
The first thing I noticed about the Velop's nodes was how tiny their footprint was. These are slimmer than an Apple AirPort Extreme, more like the size of a desktop speaker. I currently have a Linksys EA9500 powering the WiFi in my house and if you've never seen it before, it's a beast of a router.
The first big disappointment with the Velop came when I noticed that each node only has 2 ethernet ports and no USB ports. That meant that I'd have to try it out while giving up all of my wired entertainment hardware and mapping them all, the ones with built-in WiFi, to the network.
Once I had decided what device would get the super-special ethernet port, I set up the other nodes, one in the master bedroom and the other in the garage.
The setup was simple, but there didn't appear to be any way to pick the IP address range during the initial setup - not sure if I missed a step somewhere.
When it came to WiFi service, the mesh system worked great - there was solid WiFi throughout the house. But with so many devices demanding WiFi, I did notice that the Velop couldn't handle the traffic my house generates compared to the EA9500 - my guess was because I wasn't able to run as many devices off ethernet connections.
I was also able to link up my Velop to my Amazon Echo - but there's not really a whole lot of wow factor there. We don't broadcast a guest WiFi signal, and I remember our WiFi password from near muscle memory.
Another thing with the Velop is the cost. The 3-node set is $500 - that's a huge amount of money to plunk down on a system that doesn't allow as much customization and ethernet options.
In the end, I ended up switching back to the EA9500. Sure it meant that I wouldn't have a strong WiFi signal in the garage, but it's January and I'm not out there all that much right now.
The Velop line does show some really cool promise - I'm thinking the next generation of it will be the way to go. If you're looking for a device with solid WiFi connectivity, easy setup and don't have many hardwired devices then the Velop could be the system for you - especially if you have a bigger house and use extenders.
If you're looking for more options, than the EA9500 or WRT line might be more your speed.

Great Audio / Charger Splitter
on January 10, 2017
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
Like pretty much everyone else I was a little miffed that Apple dumped the audio jack in favor of the Lightning-only option in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.
I was a little irritated that I had to turn to a $50 accessory in order to be able to charge and use my headphones at the same time. The splitter works perfectly as advertised. An added bonus is, due to it's size, I don't have to worry about accidentally yanking out my earbuds from my ears - it doubles as a bit of a cable extender.
Pros:
* Works as advertised - can charge and listen at once
* Construction is sturdy - device doesn't feel cheap
* Extends reach of headphones by about 4"
Cons:
* $50 is a bit much to be able to charge and listen to audio
* Doesn't work with cradle / dock configurations
* Not a true, multi-signal splitter
Bottom Line:
If you're just dead set on listening to audio while charging, then the Belkin RockStar is a great accessory for iPhone 7 and 7 Plus owners. If you're open to the idea of using wireless, Bluetooth headsets, you might be able to spend the $50 and get a bargain headset. Also, I really feel like this could've been made into a true splitter - dual audio, video out, etc - but I'm sure there's some reason in the technology that makes that not as simple as splitting and analog signal.

Great All-in-One Battery
on December 23, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
My biggest gripe with portable battery packs has come down to a bulk / use ratio. They're either really small, but don't provide much oomph, or they're bigger than the phone they're supposed to hold a charge for.
When I saw that Belkin had made a battery that also included a puck for my Apple Watch - I had to try it. I've had great luck with Belkin accessories for my iPhone / iPad / Apple Watch from their Lightning Dock that I've had since my iPhone 5 to their new charging stand for iPhones and Apple Watches.
From a design stance, this thing is slick - follows the same black and grey/aluminum look Belkin seems to lead with in their Apple accessories. From that stance, I appreciate the visual continuity in their products.
I let it charge overnight in a small USB brick that comes with an iPhone. I then let it sit in my work backpack for a few days - still showed a full charge. Then, I left my watch on it overnight to charge instead of using my cradle to see how much battery life would drain - still showing nearly full the next day.
So now, I can dump the 6 ft. Apple Watch cord I carry around all day and stick with a single Lightning cable for my iPhone. I've also used this thing to charge my Watch and iPhone at work while streaming music - that's when I started to notice the battery pack start to drain - but as expected. A recharge that night and it was back to full power the next day.
Bottom line - if you're looking for a small battery that packs a punch and can also charge your Apple Watch securely with a built in magnetic puck - then pick this up. Belkin rarely disappoints with their Apple accessories.

With Great Blow Dryer comes Great Price Tag
on December 5, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
I have several Dyson products - and my wife has mixed-race, crazy thick curly hair, so when I saw this I thought we'd give it a shot.
She currently has a CHI blow dryer right now and honestly, it's too big and unwieldy for me to use as well. I was interested in the Dyson because, putting aside its price, I've had great experience with Dyson products - you definitely get what you pay for with this brand. I've been using the same Dyson Animal vacuum since 2004.
It did a fantastic job on my wife's hair so much that I was tempted to try it - it looks very similar to the Dyson Air Multiplier fans - no visible blades.
This thing is awesome - it dried my wife's hair in nearly half the time as the CHI without leaving her hair frazzled, wiry or with typical blow dryer fatigue. Since my hair is nowhere near that long, and much more fine, it had my hair dry in a matter of seconds.
It's also lighter and more manageable than typical blow dryers. The attachments that came with it are of little benefit for me, but my wife seems to appreciate them.
The biggest drawback for the Dyson is it's cost - it's a $400 hair dryer. For someone like me - that's more than excessive, but it's also worked great for my wife's hair for now, so I'll rate it a 4. My wife is a picky person, so if she likes something, then it's pretty good in my book.
Pros:
Speed and heat control
Size and weight
Portability
Attachments
Cons:
Cost - the $400 price point makes this not an average user's hair dryer.
Bottom Line:
The Dyson SuperSonic Hair Dryer delivers typical Dyson-quality performance with the typical Dyson-price tag. If you're serious about hair - or maybe a hairstylist - this is a great hair dryer. If you're an average joe, then you're probably better off with a traditional type of hairdryer at a fraction of the Dyson cost.

Excellent All-Around Device
on November 20, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
I've been using the beard trimmer on my old Phillips Norelco electric shaver for years because it's easier to have a 5-o'clock shadow than shave every day. My facial hair is such that most electric shavers won't get it all - and I hate the cost of traditional razors.
I was curious to try this out too because I've been starting to get more into swimming, and wanted a trimmer that could help with some manscaping efforts, if you catch my drift.
I've used this for trimming the hair on my arms, chest, legs and face. I haven't been brave enough to try the groin area just yet. First off, this device is quiet when using the default trimmer - even with the various guards. It's actually quieter than my older Norelco shaver, even when I kick in the turbo-mode that shaves faster.
The turbo option is awesome too - when you want to mow through a lot of hair, it has an option to engage or disengage turbo speed as needed. I use the base speed on my face, but the turbo speed on my body grooming.
The only downside, that's not really a downside, is the base trimmer doesn't get my facial hair as close as my older beard trimmer did - but since it's quicker and quieter, that's not really a deal breaker.
It's handled my body and facial hair just fine - I also appreciate that it's water proof and can accompany me into the shower. I've also used the nose hair trimmer - it's a bit louder than I expected, but it also did the job.
If you're looking for a great all-in-one for the guy in your life with various types of hair and hair care needs, I highly recommend this! I've been using it for several days now and I love it!

Perfect for Semi-Pro Users
on November 11, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
I've used Adobe's Creative Cloud products since before they were Creative Cloud products. That being said, I didn't want to drop that kind of money on Premier Pro or Photoshop for home use... but, as a Mac user, there are times when Aperture (yes, I still have it) / Photos / iMovie don't cut it.
So I was excited to try out Adobe's Elements line - which is basically a watered down version of the Pro products. These are perfect for people who want to do more with their videos and pictures while not requiring the horsepower or features of the Pro products.
If you've ever used an Adobe Creative Cloud product, then you'll already be familiar with the interface. If you've never used an Adobe product before, then get ready - there will be a learning curve.
I was able to install Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements on my Mac without too much of a hassle - it came as a physical disc which, for some reason I couldn't get to work in my external disc drive. Fortunately, it also comes with a download link. Once I pulled the images off Adobe's servers, which was faster than a Flash update for some reason, I was up and running.
I edited a few images in Photoshop and some videos using Premier - like I said, if you've used Adobe products in the past, then you'll pick these up really easily. There were a few times I found myself searching the web on articles to fully explain the differences between the programs from a capability aspect, but I couldn't find anything that would make these a no-go for a home / semi-pro user.
For all you Mac users - just know that I had to export a photo out of my Aperture library to get Photoshop to use it - there didn't appear to be an API that handled the handshake between Photoshop and Aperture.
All that being said, if you find yourself being frustrated with iMovie, Aperture or Photos on Mac (or Windows Movie Maker, you lucky kiddos) then I'd suggest springing for these. They cost more than free, to be sure, but they're a heckuva lot cheaper than the pro versions.

Many of those particles are 1000x smaller than you can see.Give yourself some peace of mind with a sleek Filtrete™ Smart Air Purifier that automatically monitors, reacts and purifies air in large rooms.

Can you use the air purifier with the windows both open and closed?

I’ve had mine running and have opened the windows in my home office a few times during the day - I think it’ll depend more on the air quality outside. I wouldn’t try to have my windows open during an Ozone Action day here in Texas to see how this thing fairs - but during temperate days, it’s been fine.

Shark AI Robot VACMOP combines powerful vacuum suction and hard floor wet mopping for a complete clean, all in one robot. Features include: Shark suction power, Sonic Mopping that delivers 100 scrubs per minute for stuck-on stains, and AI Laser Navigation for precision cleaning.

"We would like to let you know that this Robot also works to vacuum carpets." This is the response that I got when I asked "Does it work on carpet?" Sounds to me that it doesn't work on carpet but they want you to buy it anyway.

The beater bar on this doesn't look like it's meant to get into the fibers of the carpet. I don't have it vacuum mine, I have it only for the hard floors.

I'm trying to confirm if this connects directly to WiFi and no Arlo hub or base station is needed to use the camera??

I paired mine with my existing Arlo hub - but it does appear to indicate you can use it without one.

This Belkin CONNECT USB-C audio and charge adapter delivers up to 60W of pass-through power and supports fast charging for compatible devices.

I need to know : it works like sígnale splitter ?

No - it won't split a signal to 2 USB-C devices. One USB-C port is for charging only and the other is for audio output. The device has picture indicators on it identifying which port is for charging (lightning bolt) and for audio (headphones).

Expand connectivity on your Apple MacBook Pro or Air with this gray HyperDrive DUO seven-in-two USB Type-C hub. Two USB Type-C ports support Power Delivery for charging mobile devices rapidly, while the HDMI output lets you connect a UHD display. This HyperDrive DUO seven-in-two USB Type-C hub has USB Type-A ports and microSD and SD card slots for fast data transfer.

Will the adapter fit comfortably if the computer is in a protective hard case/skin?

User submitted photo
It will - but I found it to feel a bit shaky. I was worried that I'd break the USB-C ports on the hub off inside the MacBook.

IS THIS EASY TO PAIR? IS IT NECESSARY TO PAIR EACH TIME THE TV AND HEADPHONES ARE TURNED ON, OR ONCE THE PAIR HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED CAN YOU FORGET ABOUT THE TRANSMITTER HANGING ON THE BACK OF THE TV? AND WHAT KIND OF RANGE DOES IT TRANSMIT?

I've never had an issue with mine losing / forgetting connection. I can't speak to range since I've only used it within a few feet at most, but I've had no issues.
