I am a big fan of Bergman's work, so I took a risk and bought this one sight unseen. Boy was I glad I did. The plot concerns a famous ballet dancer who receives an old diary in the mail. The diary takes her back to the island where she spent her summers as a youth. Through a series of flashbacks, we see the summer that she fell in love with a young man and the effect the affair would have in her for years to come. In the end, the movies asks a question that I still haven't been able to answer for myself: By confronting our past, can we improve our future? This is filmmaking at it's most hopeful. My only quarrel is the nonexistent extras. This is not considered one of Bergman's greatest works, and Criterion has priced the DVD to reflect the lack of extras. Still, as many consider this a turning point in Bergman's career, I'm disappointed they couldn't add something to this package.

I really enjoyed this movie. Only being familiar with Hitchcock's darker, Hollywood thrillers, I did not expect something so light and fun. It's a great mix of comedy and thrills. Margaret Lockwood is great in her role as the socialite convinced what she saw was real, and the characters of Charters and Caldicott are wonderful.
Since this is Criterion, there are a bunch of extras, so many that I haven't gotten through all of them. There is a full length Charters and Caldicott movie included, which I am looking forward to,
This movie surprised me, as it was different than the trailer presented it as. The trailer made it out to be a lighthearted romantic comedy, which it was at the start. What develops is a slightly darker, but truthful, look at relationships and the very real challenges couples face. The chemistry between Jason Segel and Emily Blunt is perfect for the roles and the side characters keep the movie light. The movie could have used some further cuts as scenes run too long, and sometimes the comedy feels forced, but overall I appreciated the fact that it went beyond rom-com cliches. This copy includes every format you could possibly want - blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy, and UltraViolet download. It also includes more bonus features than the DVD, which was a plus for me.
