By far, "Battle Royale" is one of the best movies you will ever see! Though it differs from the novel, it is still good in it's own right.
If you have not seen this, the simple description of the movie does not seem like much: kids being forced, by their government, to kill each other off.
However, the movie is not just about senseless killings; there is a lot of character development going on. You get to know who these characters are and what they are about. To me, that's what really makes a movie.
I should not need to say much more, as you probably already have searched about this on the internet.
With that being said, I do have to down-rate this due to this particular Anchor Bay release. The supposed "Director's Cut" is not a true "Director's Cut". The additional scenes were filmed after the movie's initial release, to capitalize on the film's success. This Anchor Bay release is also not the true "Special Version" (as it is properly called). This release was actually re-edited, using scenes from the original theatrical release, because Anchor Bay did not want to deal with some of the color corrections the "Special Version" required.
Another issue, though this "Directors Cut" is the first release to feature an English dub version. Though, the only way to see subtitles for the written Japanese text is to turn on the entire movie's subtitle track, which do not match up with everything spoken in English.
If it is easier and cheaper for you to get this version, then, by all means, get it. Otherwise, I would recommend looking for another country's release, as no one else tinkered with it.
My Best Buy number: 0398546203
What's great about it: "Battle Royale" finally available in the U.S., after 12 years!
What's not so great: Anchor Bay's effort in this release.
I would recommend this to a friend!

- The inclusion of "Battle Royale 2" is a nice addition to the set. However, there is a greatly extended version of this movie that is non-existant in this set, despite calling itself a "Complete Collection".
- Despite a bonus features disc, very few features are offered. There are hours of behind the scenes features out there that are nowhere to be found in this Anchor Bay release.
If it is easier and cheaper for you to get this version, then, by all means, get it. Otherwise, I would recommend looking for another country's release, as no one else tinkered with it.

Prepare for the ultimate Battle Royale experience with this comprehensive 3 disc Blu-ray set featuring an additional bonus DVD collector's set and over two hours of special features. In addition to offering both the Theatrical Cut and Director's Cut of Battle Royale, this release also features the sequel, Battle Royale II, and English-subtitled bonus materials.
