Extend your next-gen AC Wi-Fi connection in hard-to-reach locations of your home such as the backyard, garage, or bedroom, so you can get blazing AC3000 Wi-Fi speeds to Smart TVs, Blu-ray Disc players, iPads, tablets, laptops, and smartphones. Powerful amplifiers and four high-performance external antennas deliver maximum power and range, allowing everyone in your family to enjoy 4K/HD movie streaming, simultaneous online gaming, social media, and more. The Max-Stream RE9000 tri-band range extender helps you get the most out of your home Wi-Fi by delivering faster speeds than dual-band range extenders. Dedicated backhaul technology maximizes Wi-Fi speeds by assigning a single, dedicated 5 GHz Wi-Fi band to your router. This frees up the remaining two bands to focus exclusively on your streaming media players, game consoles, and other connected devices, so you'll enjoy full-strength Wi-Fi without slowdown or degradation.

This REALLY WORKS!
on March 9, 2018

Like many, I've struggled for years with modems provided by Service Providers or purchased myself that simply did not give full house Wi-Fi coverage let alone reception to my separate Garage/Workshop. So, even though it bristled with multiple antennae like many other "powerful" units that I've tried before, I was ready for more disappointment when I installed the Linksys - RE9000 AC3000 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi Range Extender . The difference in Wi-Fi coverage was enormous.
Whereas before the Linksys RE9000 was installed my only reliable Wi-Fi signal was downstairs rooms except the farthest bedroom, After installing and setting it up, full four bar coverage extended to EVERY inch of my 1.1 acre lot from corner to corner. For the first time I can stream Wi-Fi without buffering in my separate garage in the work room which is in the part of the garage that is farthest from the house. The range I'm experiencing only comes if you run a LAN cable from your router to the area that you want better coverage. Otherwise, you can only located the RE9000 Extender as far away from the main router as its Wi-Fi signal will reach. For me this meant mounting it in the garage attic. The added advantage of the attic location is that the extra 2nd story height pushes the signal farther out to the edges of the property. I feel like my W-Fi has a whole new life.
Pros:
- Excellent Signal Strength/Range
- Device recieving the Wi-Fi signal will be switched automatically and seamlessly between the main or the Linksys router (whichever has the stronger signal in that location), as you move around.
- It will beam multiple signals at different frequencies if one frequency has too high a load.
- The set up for wireless comunication between the main router and the Linksys RE-9000 is particularly easy. One button-push if you have a modern main Router.
- Appears on Wi-Fi list with the same password and same name as your primary router (with "_EXT" after the name.
Cons:
- The more effective Wired LAN installation and setup is more complicated, but in my personal experience that was offset by the excellent, patient, phone in Technical Support.

A Great Addition to a Smart Home
on February 25, 2018

This is the Insignia version of the Google Home device in what I think is a more attractive package. Anything Google Home can do, this device can do. If all you do is purchase this "Personal Assistant" and set it on your counter or bedside alone, then you are missing out on the features that make it a powerful part of a home automation system. Most of the home automation devices that use the common "Zigbee" protocol, have Apps that you initially configure this device to use, via your smart phone. Once you've used your phone to integrate this device to your home network, you don't need the phone to control them. For example, I control many of my lights to any percentage of brightness or even colors by saying "Hey Google, light "X" 50%". I can start and stop my Robot Vacuum Cleaner by saying "Hey Google, start Vacuum". I'll shortly be installing a home security that I will be able to arm and disarm as I leave or arrive home without touching any key-pad. I fully expect that in a few years our digital assistant will recognize who has just entered the house and by itself will decide if an alarm is necessary. The future is at least partly here now!

A Hardcore Athletic Training Watch
on February 20, 2018
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
Compared to others on the market, the Suunto Spartan Trainer gets a lot of things right, but falls short in comparison to other fitness watches on some of the more casual features.
Pros:
- The Suunto Spartan Trainer is noticeably more comfortable than for example the Fitbit Charge 2. The Spartan Trainer, being more of a traditional watch form factor fits the wrist better and the strap material is more pliable and pleasant feeling than the Charge 2. Its overall design is very similar to a traditional watch. It’s more attractive to look at and fits in with day-to-day and business attire.
- The user interface on the Spartan Trainer uses physical buttons rather than a touch screen which makes scrolling between function screens easier and more consistent.
- The actual user interface is crisp and clean with simple bold colors which you can change to your taste. The intuitive control layout is used consistently throughout the entire experience.
- This is a fitness watch aimed squarely at the hard core Iron Man, Alpine Skiing, Tough Mudder Running, etc. Athlete.
- The GPS mode is accurate and makes getting lost on longer off road runs less likely since it allows you to retrace your steps using a “bread-crumb” mechanic.
Cons:
- The Phone App is not great. Though very attractive, it lacks the Social Motivation and positive feedback from other fellow Suunto Spartan users that you get with the Fit Bit App user experience.
- My personal experience during the initial syncing of the device via Bluetooth seemed unnecessarily frustrating. Using an Android OnePlus 3 phone, I went through the normal Android steps to pair the Spartan with my phone. According to my phone’s Bluetooth settings it was paired with the Spartan. However, the Suunto App on my phone refused to recognize the Spartan watch. I ended up removing and reinstalling the App at least five times before finally getting it to pair using the Suunto Moves App. This finally allowed the App to recognize the Spartan device. Because of this experience I ended up not using the Suunto Spartan App for several days and only using the Spartan watch itself to view my data.
In summary, the watch's hardware is fantastic and if it was compatible with Fitbit software I would drop my Charge 2 in a heartbeat. As it stands I have a difficult decision to go with a better device (the Spartan) and be by myself or go back to my Charge 2 and enjoy the superior Fitbit ecosystem and social interaction/motivation. When it comes down to it, I’m not personally a hardcore Iron Man, Alpine Skiing, Tough Mudder running athlete. So, I’m not the primary target for the Suunto Spartan Trainer. I prefer the more informal social competition and motivation of my friends and coworkers who all use Fitbit devices. That's why I can't recommend it to one of MY casual fitness sports friends. They'd have the same problem of great device but no social interaction. While the Fitbit is definitely less comfortable and less attractive than the Suunto Spartan Trainer the Fitbit ecosystem is a different type of draw. HOWEVER, if you and your friends are into hardcore personal sports, the Suunto Spartan is the watch for you.

The Upgrade to HDR is Worth IT

4K TVs have been around for a couple of years now and I honestly couldn't see enough of an improvement from 2K and 4K to make me upgrade from my 5 year old "HD" TV to any of last year's 4K TVs. However, this year's addition of HDR to available specifications and to a lesser extent UHD, makes a difference I can clearly appreciate. The Sony - 75" Class (74.5" Diag.) - LED - 2160p - Smart - 4K Ultra HD TV with High Dynamic Range produces a dazzling picture from a suitable source, such as my Xbox One X through a Denon AVR-S730H receiver. I know the big trend this year is OLED because of "the incredible deep blacks". However, I find that how deep the blacks look, is as much a function of how bright the lighting in the viewing area is, as it is the current technology. I was MUCH more impressed by the difference in price per screen size, than I was the difference in blackness between OLED and the Sony Bravia LED BACK-LIT screens, under the lighting conditions of my viewing room. I was able to afford the 75" model and the visual impact of that large screen size compared to similar priced 55"-65" OLED screens, made the Sony - 75" Class (74.5" Diag.) - LED - 2160p - Smart - 4K Ultra HD TV with High Dynamic Range the right choice for me. Add to that the reputation for Burned-in residual images that OLED displays are notorious for and it was a "no-brainer".

You can MAKE it work

Mounting a Cable Pass-through box like this, with one box low enough to be out of sight and the other box behind the middle of the wall mounted TV to be out of sight, is a good way to hide the clutter of Power, HDMI, LAN and USB cables to make the wall mounted TV seem to float on air. The trick is to do it with minimum damage to the dry wall and flexibility to pass different cables between the upper and lower box when new technology and cable types require cable replacement over the years. A traditional home/office electrical outlet box is designed to clamp cables or wiring firmly which makes wiring upgrades difficult and beyond DYI. As you read other reviews of these Legrand - In Wall Cable Access Plates you'll see that this is not the perfect solution out-of-the-box (so to speak). The directions included are typical of today's shabby instruction books, which are made primarily to satisfy legal government warning requirements in six languages (DO NOT eat parts of this box because they MAY present a choking hazard and they WILL cause cancer if you eat them in California). There are two things you need to know before installing these Legrand - In Wall Cable Access Plates. First DO NOT make the hole in the wall as big as you would for a standard electrical outlet box. This Wall Cable Access plate does not mount INTO an electrical outlet box. It has its own dog-legs that grip the back of the dry wall, to clamp itself into place when you insert it and then tighten the top and bottom clamping screws. You can see from the picture I uploaded, that I initially ASSUMED it needed the same sized hole as a standard outlet box, so I traced the outline of a standard outlet box on the wall to make the hole-saw cut in the dry wall. If I had proceeded with making that large a hole, the Legrand - In Wall Cable Access Plates would have wobbled around loosely without side support. Instead, trace the hole to be the size of the actual Legrand - In Wall Cable Access Plate. In the uploaded picture, I left off the final trim plate that comes with the box to let you see the size of the opening in the wall. When the included trim plate is installed, the total instalation looks much nicer. Secondly, to make the passing of new cables between the upper and lower box possible, TRIM THE EXCESS MATERIAL off of the Legrand - In Wall Cable Access Plate. Best Buy only allows a total of two pictures with each review, so I hope you can see what needed trimming from the boxes, by looking at the single before-and-after picture of the trimmed parts. I know the makers of this box designed it so cables could not fall in from the top box, to the area inside the wall, if the cables were not connected to the TV. However, all of this extra flange material makes installation of the new cables for the first time too difficult, to make the extra material worth it. All this being said, this kind of modification I'm describing is only an option for the Do It Yourself Home Owner. From inside the wall, it looks pretty rough when you trim it like this. Someone paying a professional installer would not be happy if they saw it. Professional installers or renters would have to go with a much more expensive and hard to install set of boxes. My method described is to make the cheaper alternative work. I dropped one review Star because of the typical lousy instruction manual and the trimming necessary to get the box to work the way I wanted it to. However, once I got everything in place, I am perfectly happy with the look and performance.

HDR Actually Requires Better HDMI Cables
on January 29, 2018

I was always thought of anything but the cheapest HDMI cables as a rip-off. My attitude was changed when I installed my a new Home Theater System with a 75" Sony Bravia UHD, HDR TV, a Denon AVR-S730H and an Xbox One X. I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out why even though I had all three components on their highest videos settings, the Xbox would not send HDR10 to the TV. The Xbox came with a "High Speed" HDMI cable. The instructions were adamant that this cable be used, but again I thought that was just hype. With the Denon in between the TV and the Xbox, I needed two HDMI cables. After a lot of switching things around and borrowing my son's Xbox One X "High Speed" HDMI cable, I finally realized that the Cheap HDMI cables I had been using for years weren't up to HDR standards. I went to Best Buy and purchased this this Rocketfish 4K UltraHD cable. Lo and behold, everything thing worked to the highest video settings. I'm not saying that "medium" quality HDMI cables won't work for HDR, but if you've been cheaping out on HDMI cables for years like I have, and your new HDR system won't work properly with your old cables, definitely try the this Rocketfish 4K UltraHD cable. It might be all you need to get your new system working.

Impressive Tech

For a long time, voice recognition has been more frustrating than helpful. The Insignia Voice Activated Speaker is part of a new generation of voice activated Home Automation devices that is worth the time and effort of integrating into your home and life.
The hardware is an attractive device that is blank black when not in use, but glows with symbols and numbers when you ask it questions or give it commands. One thing you don't have to ask it is what the local time it is, since even in idle mode it displays the time in pale white numbers. If you Say "Hey Google, What temperature is it in the house?" it will tell you that you don't have the required home automation device installed for that and it will recommend where to buy one. She's quite a sales lady.
PROS:
- Very handy in the kitchen answering questions about cooking recipes, times and temperatures as well as setting multiple timers without touching it with food covered fingers.
- It will control home automation devices like Phillips QUE Lights and various door locks.
- It will take spoken questions and speak the answers it receives after searching the internet.
- The sound quality is pleasant enough to listen to internet services like Spotify and Pandora.
CONS:
- It's a little creepy since it is listening all of the time. For example, if you have a conversation with another person about flights to a certain destination and later ask it to check general flight costs, it will tell you the price of the flight between cities you were talking about minutes before with a human.
- It requires opening a Google Home and Gmail account to use it even if you don't care to use Google. You also have to install a Google assistant App on your phone to activate it.
- You have to have a good Wi-Fi signal in the location you use it and you have to provide the password to that router.

Just the right amount of Functionlity

Wall mounts range from simple static mounts, to full swivel articulated arms that swing the TV on every axis. They only thing I haven't seen is fully motorized arms with remote controls, but I'm sure they are coming. I bought the Sanus - Premium Series Advanced Tilt TV Wall Mount to fasten my 75" Sony 900E TV to the wall. This mount allows the TV to be extended out from the wall far enough to install the necessary wires and cables and also allows a slight left-right deflection of 5-10 degrees. More importantly though once the TV is pushed back to the wall, because of its relative simplicity there is a relatively small gap between the TV and the wall compared to mounts with full articulating arms. For me the most important motion is up and down tilt and this mount allows enough defection in the vertical axis that the screen can be perfectly perpendicular to any seating in front of the TV. Fastening the mount to the wall and TV is a simple DYI proceedure. One section mounts to the wall, the other section mounts to the TV. All necessary fasteners for multiple types of walls (wooden stud, metal stud, concrete block, etc.) and multiple makes and sizes of TVs (Up to 100", various screw hole patterns, lengths and thread sizes) are included in the package. Once the sections are mounted, it is a simple operation to lift the TV in position and hook it over the top of the wall mount. A 75" TV requires two people, but a hooking motion and then a downwards click and the TV is safely in place. The two extended plastic pull-release straps are very obvious in the pictures, but they are simple to push upwards into the frame and they disappear from view. They'll never be needed until years later when you need to remove the TV to replace it with a new 10K model.

I've had a Sony 10" vented, self amplified woofer for several years hooked up to my Home Theater. The room is fairly large (~20'x20') but the main challenge for my sound system is that it is quite open to the kitchen, dining room and foyer. I knew that something was coming from the Sony woofer, but it had no real "impact". I installed the 12" Klipsch Reference R-12SW subwoofer in the right corner of the front wall opposite the Sony and hooked both of them up to the Subwoofer outputs of my Denon AVR-S730H receiver. The effect was dramatic to say the least. There is no longer any doubt whatsoever that there is "something" coming from the subwoofer. Not only do the thumps and explosions from action movies make themselves known with authority, the sustained low frequency notes in the music soundtrack are clear and impressive. I am very satisfied that the cost of this subwoofer was money well spent to enhance my home theater experience.

For the Technophiles
on December 20, 2017
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
As a person who appreciates Tech for Tech's sake, I can understand the enthusiasm for substituting walking over to a light switch/dimmer and just flipping or sliding a switch, with opening a phone App to get basically the same result. If Tech is your thing, then these are your lights. When compared to incandescent lamps plugged into a dimmer and timer, here are the Pros and Cons.
PROS:
- Quick and accurate response
- After a Kit like this one with both the "Bridge" controller and 4 bulbs is purchased, you can buy up to a total of 50 bulbs without needing to buy another controller.
- At 10 watts power consumtion each, the bullbs are about the eqivelent to old tech 60 watt incandecent bulbs in lumen brightness.
- You can program each individual bulb to change both its white color temperature and it brightness on a repeating schedule.
- The bulbs will save you money on both your electrical lighting bill and your A/C bill since they run much cooler than incandescent bulbs.
-These lights can be controlled by voice commands using Google Home, Amazon Alexa, etc.
-You can impress your friends with a demo of your "Connected Home".
CONS:
-These bulbs are relatively pricy when compared to some brands. However, "Cheap" LED bulbs are notorious for failure and I assume that a name brand like Philips is likely to build more quality and endurance into their products than no-name companies that are competing only on price.
- Setting mood lighting with an App is fine, but if someone flips the wall switch off and on again, they will default to full brightness until the App is run again. Not everyone will have access to the App and this could spoil the "mood".

Does it work with a i Robot clean base?

Yes, it will after you add an evacuation port to the i6. That plastic piece comes in the box when you buy the charge base that sucks the dirt out of the i6's chamber when it docks to re-charge.

Does this include virtual wall?

Yes, after you send it out for the first-time to map all of the rooms, you can look at the map on your phone app. There you can create virtual barriers that the i6 will not cross. You can also name the rooms and create square "Do-not-go" zones in any of the rooms or halls. With this information you can instruct the i6 to clean just one or more of the rooms or throw-rugs you named and avoid the rest of the rooms.

Can the vacuum mop??

No, the i6 does a good job, but it's just a vacuum for hardwood/tile floors and carpet. Roomba has another model that squirts water on dirt and pulls it up with a "Swiffer" like disposable pad. You can see it on their website.

Would this work in a house with a guinea pig? I.e. be able to pick up poop and some hay (that’d be a huge bonus)

I owned a guinea pig MANY years ago so I'm sure it will pick up its poop as long as it's normal (for a guinea pig) and not diarrhea. The hay is another matter. As you can imagine, it all depends on the length and consistency of the hay. If it's too long or piled too high, almost no household vacuum can take stiff hay in. In this case, if the hay is relatively short (up to 1.5" or so), it should pick it up.

Do you have to have internet for it to work?

Technically it will vacuum without an internet connection, but it will never create a map of your floor plan or cover the rooms logically. Instead, it will bounce from wall to wall like a billiard ball until it runs down its battery. You can do this to cover a room or floor of your house that you don't intend to do again, but you would be wasting all of the advanced features this model has to offer.

Does this one map a grid to use each time like the robot one? Thanks

No. The Shark Ion is the less complicated type of Robo Vac that uses the Billiard Ball Navigation method where it goes more or less in a straight line until it bumps into something. The "Map a Grid" type has advantages, but they are larger, more expensive and if the home's entire floor plan doesn't have really good Wi-Fi coverage, it can get lost an confused in a far back corner of the house. I have both types and they both have their advantages and disadvantages.
