This PC is a Beast

Computer evolution isn’t progressing at the scorching pace it was 20 years ago, so we tend to hold on to our computers longer now than we did in the 90s and 00s. However computer features are still improving. Eventually even your favorite old reliable PC begins showing its age as new versions of software appear. I use my home PC for high end gaming and also occasionally bring SolidWorks Engineering 3D models and prints home to modify when things get too busy at work. Lately the new 2018 version of SolidWorks and the latest PC games would only run at their lowest graphic settings on my old PC. The last straw came though when I purchased an Oculus Rift VR headset. My old PC groaned under the weight of the GPU demands of the Rift VR, so I knew it was time to look for a new PC.
I wanted something that was not only a top notch Gaming PC, but also had the capability of Ray Tracing Graphics to speed up Engineering software and reduce pixilation (Stair stepping) of thin straight lines on the 4K computer screen that ran at angles other than straight up and down or straight left to right. Ray Tracing technology is why the video card model in the HP Obelisk Desktop PC 875-0024 is an Nvidia RTX-2080 and not a GTX-2080. Ray Tracing has been used in Engineering software for years to make multiple fine lines in drawings clearer and the lighting and reflections of 3D models more accurate. Ray Tracing will be used in the newest video games to make lighting and shadows much more realistic.
I ran a series of 3DMark PC Benchmark tests on my HP Obelisk Desktop PC 875-0024 and got scores in the top 5% to 9% of all PC submitted for testing. THAT’s impressive. I’ve attached a picture of one of the test results. The Omen runs every game on my Oculus Rift at the highest performance settings. I could go on and on about the amazing capabilities of the HP Obelisk Desktop PC 875-0024 so I’ll shorten it by saying that it is currently “Bleeding Edge” and I’m confident it is future proof enough to capably run the newest software I throw at it for years to come.
Features:
- 8th Generation Intel Core i7
- 16 GB of DDR4 SDRAM Memory
- 256 GB Solid State Drive for rapid access to main programs/games
- 2 TB Disk Hard Drive for storage of Pictures/Video/Documents etc.
- Seven USB type 3.1 Ports
- One HDMI Port, three Display Ports and one USB-C type Video Port
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Graphics Card with 8 GB DDR6 memory
- Will drive up to 4 Monitors Simultaneously
- 5.1 Surround Sound Out for Speakers
- DTS Headphone:X for realistic 3D Sound on any set of Headphones
- 1 Year Limited Warranty on Parts
PROS:
- A Top Spec, High Performance Gaming PC
- Will power the most high end Virtual Reality Goggles with ease at top Frame-Rate settings
- Well cooled with efficient quiet fans
- Glass Side Panel with LED lighting to show high-end interior parts
- Omen Logo on front panel with user-selectable multiple back-lit colors
- LED lighting can be turned off using HP software by user if desired
CONS:
- The stark "Ominous" (thus the name “Omen”) “Gaming PC” look, is not for everyone even though the colored lights can be shut off.
- It is unnecessarily powerful for the great majority of home PC users just cruising the internet and sending emails and thus is relatively expensive.

Cutting Edge Blending
on November 26, 2018
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
At one time blenders were only good at making milkshakes and soup puree. Now they can slice, dice and make delicious smoothies among many other things. The Ninja Smart Screen Kitchen System has control and finesse over the process that old blenders never had.
FEATURES:
- “Smart Vessel Recognition” sets the LCD display and options depending on which mixing apparatus is set on top of the motor base.
- The Touch Screen display lets you select the automatic programs or operate the blender in manual mode. The bright LCD screen resists moisture and is easily wiped clean.
- The 9 pre-set auto programs are calibrated with patterns of pulsing, pausing and various speeds to blend different things like dips, smoothies, juice, pizza dough, shakes and make ice-cream with just one button touch.
- The package includes a vacuum system that can extract much of the air from the container before blending starts. This reduces foaming in finely chopped liquids like juice and also helps stop air currents flinging materials like herb leaves up under the lid during blending.
- Comes with three difference blending containers; a 20 oz. smoothie travel drinking cup, a wide 40 oz. container for slicing items like cucumbers for salads or potatoes for frying into potato chips and a 72 oz. pitcher shaped container for mixing liquids.
- Includes a 10 recipe “Inspiration Guide”.
- 1-year limited warranty.
PROS:
- Attractive styling looks good on the counter.
- Simple controls allow different repeatable degrees of chopping and blending.
- Has a POWERFUL 1400-Peak-Watt motor base.
CONS:
- Has a LOUD 1400-Peak-Watt motor base. Unfortunately, it seems you can’t have one without the other. If you try to make a crushed ice smoothie to take to work in the morning and you’re up before everyone else, it will wake everyone in the house.
CONCLUSION:
I know from years of use that I am a person who will use a blender regularly. The Ninja Smart Screen Kitchen System blender is top notch and I get a lot of use out of it. It has earned the space it takes up on my kitchen counter. However, if you are not the type who uses a blender regularly, the great utility of this blender means it takes up a lot of counter space and storage under the counter as well. It’s overkill for chefs who only use a blender every few months.

When a Single Serving Isn't Enough
on November 26, 2018
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
There was a time when the convenience of a quick single serving coffee maker seemed like the preferable choice. However, as our family matured, we found ourselves needing 7 cups of coffee during the breakfast rush, instead of 2. After looking at the available coffee makers that had the features we wanted, we settled on the Calphalon Special Brew 10 Cup Coffee Maker.
FEATURES:
- Precision Brewing Temperature delivers repeatable flavorful coffee
- Delay Brewing lets you have a carafe of coffee waiting for you when you get up.
- Premium Boiling system and temperature control meet SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) guidelines for brewing coffee that meets their “Golden Cup Standard”.
- Pressing the clock button briefly shows how long ago the batch of coffee was brewed to indicate freshness.
- For a stronger start to the day, a single press of the “Strong Brew” button will raise the level of flavor and caffeine for that one brewing session.
- A backlit programmable LCD display controls all features and gives time of day.
- Side view water reservoir level indicator.
- 3-year limited warranty.
PROS:
- Attractive styling looks good on the counter.
- Simple controls allow different repeatable flavor and strength.
- The temperature control on the ceramic heater base does not burn the coffee in a near empty pot. It turns completely off after 4 hours.

CONS:
- Some have commented that the lower temperature ceramic heater base does not keep the coffee hot enough. However, properly brewed coffee should not be made with boiling water and keeping brewed coffee at tongue scalding temperatures will ruin the taste quickly. It’s a matter of “taste”. However, if you want coffee brewed hot enough to be drinkable from a thermos after a 45 minute commute, the Calphalon Special Brew 10 Cup Coffee Maker might not be for you.
- A relatively short power cord (25 inches) is fine if you have a counter outlet nearby, but be careful if you need an extension cord. Common household 4 to 5 foot two wire extension cords are too light and will overheat. A more robust 15 amp extension cord would be safe if one is needed.
- Water is added through the top rear of the machine. This can be awkward if the coffee maker is located under a low cupboard overhang.
CONCLUSION:
The Calphalon Special Brew 10 Cup Coffee Maker looks good on the counter. It matches both stainless steel and black appliances. It just happens to brew great tasting coffee too.

The Billiard Ball Navigation Method
on November 21, 2018
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
When so called Robot Vacuums first came out, they were a novelty at best with short range, extremely small capacity dust bins and poor pick-up and cleaning performance. Their main utility was scaring the family cat and making amusing YouTube videos. They have improved tremendously since those early days. They are now a practical home floor vacuuming appliance with enough dust capacity and range to handle a fairly large floor plan. There are two general types of Robo Vacs today, defined by their navigation method. The more expensive and complicated designs (NOT THE SHARK ION) use sonar arrays which the Vac uses to create a map of the entire floor plan and every barrier in the rooms. This map has too much information for the on-board memory in the Vac to store by itself and therefore the map must be uploaded to a dedicated server on the company’s website. Once stored, this mapping allows the Vac to do a very logical cleanup of the rooms traveling in straight lines that rarely cross each other. It’s pleasing to watch in action, but the off-site storage of map data is often it’s Achilles’ Heel, since a momentary drop of the internet can leave the Vac lost and confused. The sonar mapping navigation method OF THESE OTHER ROBOT VACS leaves a straight lined square shaped pattern on the open areas of carpeted floors.
The Shark - ION™ S87 App-Controlled Robot Vacuum uses the second common navigation method, the random billiard ball bounce. It has no RAM memory and every trip from the charger is a new adventure. It has bump/contact sensors and a computer program that tells it to proceed in a straight line for at least 10-15 seconds or until it bumps into something or senses the edge of a stair drop-off. It will then rotate clockwise about 95 (never exactly 90 or 180) degrees about 5 times in a row and then counter-clockwise the next 5 times in a row. This simple program EVENTUALLY randomly covers most of the open spaces in the rooms it travels through. When the battery begins to run low, it will start seeking out its charging station. The Shark Ion’s navigation method leaves a diamond shaped pattern on the open areas of carpeted floors.
PROS:
- The Shark - ION™ S87 App-Controlled Robot Vacuum does a good job of vacuuming the floor. However, because it uses the random billiard ball bounce method of navigation, it is much less complicated, has fewer ways to fail and is less expensive than sonar models.
- No Robot Vac can get into tight corners, so the addition of a separate hand vac in the charging station is a handy bonus. The hand vac comes with several attachment wands that make vacuuming under stoves and refrigerators as well as cleaning wall vents easier.

- The Shark - ION™ S87 App-Controlled Robot Vacuum has a lower profile than most Robo Vacs, which makes it more likely to be able to get under beds and sofas.
- The free phone app gives the option of three different speeds which can make the Vac either quieter or able to complete its job in less time.
- The phone app allows the owner to start the Shark - ION™ S87 App-Controlled Robot Vacuum and see its battery's charge state from anywhere in the world with an open internet connection. The app also has a simple to program scheduling function, that allows the owner to have the Vac do its job when no one is home.
- The dust collection bin is relatively large which will usually allow the entire floor to be cleaned in one run.
CONS:
- The dust collection bin does not have an automatically closing intake opening when it is removed from the Vac (see the included photo). This and the opening's location on the bottom edge of the bin, often results in dirt being spilled out of the bin onto the floor when the bin is removed, unless care is taken to keep the bin level.
- The random navigation method can sometimes make it difficult for the Vac to find its charging station when the battery gets low.
- The fan and motor on the separate hand-held Vac create a loud high-frequency scream that is unpleasant to be near. It is so loud (even for my old ears), that I was prompted to use noise cancelling headphones when using it. Other than the noise however, the hand vac does a good job.
CONCLUSION:
The Shark - ION™ S87 App-Controlled Robot Vacuum is not a toy. It is a legitimate house cleaning appliance. If you had a Robot Vac a few years ago and found it wasn’t worth the effort, the current generation of Robot Vacs like the Shark-ION is worth giving a second look. They have really improved. Personally, I’m looking forward to the future generation Robo Vac that will climb and vacuum stairs as it does its thing in a multi-story home! In the meantime, I’ll keep my Shark Ion.

The Sound of Silence
on November 12, 2018
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
There are many different brands and models of wireless Bluetooth earbuds available. A relatively rare feature for this price point though, is ANC (Active Noise Cancellation). The components necessary for ANC are the reason for the two lobes that drape on either side of the wearer’s neck. Similar Plantronics earbud models without ANC use the same earpieces as the 410 and give similar sound dynamics at a lower price and slightly lighter package. However, part of the reason we sometimes use headphones or earbuds is to separate ourselves from the annoying noises in public places on the ride to and from work or in the gym. Again, for this price point the Plantronics BackBeat GO 410 earbuds deliver not only good voice and music but some peace and quiet too. You can have slightly better ANC for double or triple the price, but the ANC on these earbuds is reasonably effective.
PROS:
- For the less technical among us, the BackBeat GO 410 earbuds seek out and pair with a Bluetooth device like a Cell Phone when they are turned on the first time, out of the box. For that reason, it’s a good idea to have your phone within 20 feet with its Bluetooth transmitter turned on, before opening the BackBeat GO 410 earbuds box and turning them on for the first time. If you forget, or you want to pair them with a second or third device, there is a button pushing procedure outlined in the owner’s annual to follow for Bluetooth pairing.
- The Active Noise Cancelling is effective and produces a noticeable reduction in background noise particularly droning (steady rhythm and frequency) noises like lawn mowers and aircraft engines.

- ANC does require extra power from the batteries, so it’s important to shut the power down when the earbuds are removed, even temporarily. There is a handy feature that shuts the power off just by removing the earbuds from your ears and clicking them together around your neck with the internal magnets in the earbuds.
- The foam of the earbud insert is sweat resistant, to stop premature deterioration.
- The BackBeat GO 410 earbuds use the latest Bluetooth 5.0 protocol. That means a solid stable connection as far 30 feet between the earbuds and your phone, as long as the phone is up to version 5.0 of Bluetooth too.
- The flat rather than round cross-section wires of the BackBeat GO 410 earbuds, resist tangling and knotting.
CONS:
- The BackBeat GO 410 earbuds use the older Micro USB connection for charging rather than the more current and versatile USB-C connection. That sometimes means carrying around two different types of charging cables for your equipment.
- The frequency response and battery life of the BackBeat GO 410 earbuds is only average. However this is the feature price we pay, for Active Noise Cancelling.
CONCLUSION:
- In the end, you have to decide if Active Noise Cancelling is an important feature for you. If it is, I highly recommend considering these earbuds. If you have no need for ANC, then you can get lighter less expensive earbuds with the same sound quality and longer battery life. It’s your choice.

You Actually OWN this Software
on October 29, 2018
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
Most people are familiar enough with MS Office through years of use, to know that it’s the premiere Software Suite for any size business. The long successful run of MS Office gives you reliable and feature compatible access to old archived documents that may have been written or created decades ago by people long retired. It’s also powerful and up to date with the latest features and codecs that allow creation of documents that interface with the most complex cloud based multinational intranet and internet systems around today. However, it’s both blessed and cursed by this history of spanning decades. It’s has become somewhat bloated with the code necessary to handle so many legacy file types and documents and it is so feature laden that the dashboard looks like the panel on a fighter jet and every switch is many layers deep. Personally, I find it does everything I am capable of remembering or doing with word, finance, communication, presentation or data processing, but I suspect that my co-workers and I are taping into less than 20% of what it’s capable of doing.
For this reason, the biggest downside is not that there is anything that MS Office can’t do, it’s that in the quest to make it desirable enough to cause users to ditch an older version and switch to a new one, Microsoft has a tendency to fiddle with the functionality and methods of getting the job at hand done, just for the sake of answering the question “What’s NEW?”.
Microsoft has millions of customers who are perfectly happy with the version of MS Office that they own, know and love and it’s become harder and harder to generate MS Office sales. Thus Microsoft and many other software companies have pushed, prodded and shoved their loyal but unprofitable customers into the “Subscription Based” model. All companies would rather have a steady (even if slightly smaller) steam of revenue each year than a gigantic glut of business every 5 years or so with almost no money coming in in the years between that don’t have a major version upgrade. Thus, Office 365 was born. If you read the fine print of the Office 365 ULA when you clicked “I Agree”, you’ll notice that you don’t own the software you just paid money for, you’re just renting it. If you ever stop paying the rental fee and retire the computer registered to that software and then activate the computer years later to use it again, the software won’t work. Most people won’t care about that and they probably lease their cars, furniture and apartments with no worry, but for a cranky few like myself, it just doesn’t seem acceptable. For we paranoid few, MS Office Home and Business 2019 is worth the cost. It doesn’t do anything better or faster than MS Office 365, but it will continue working in its current form for many years without the operator interface changing radically.
(Some of the) New Features:
Outlook – View up to 3 times zones simultaneously to schedule meetings and events.
- Easily play received email text-to-voice audio, to listen to emails while you multitask.
- Many new ways to sort In-Box emails to organize priority.
Word - Book-like Page Navigation
- Improved Digital Pen Integration
- Easily insert a 3D model into a Word document, and then rotate it a complete 360 degrees. Readers with Office 2019 will be able to rotate it too.
PowerPoint - Use 3D models to increase visual and creative impact in presentations. Easily insert a . 3D model, and then rotate it through 360 degrees.
- When you export a presentation to video, 4K resolution is now an option.
- Use a Surface pen, or any other digital pen with a Bluetooth button, to advance the slides.
Excel - Many new advanced math functions available
- New world and individual country maps available to automatically chart onto.
- New tools for selecting, deselecting and removing extraneous cells.
Office 2019 PROS:
- Features and tool locations never change unexpectedly due to mandatory updates.
- High functional power and compatibility

- Can fully utilize the power of the newest computers.
- Communicates and works with users of Office 365 when necessary
- Does not need internet connection for most functions and files if desired
Office 2019 CONS:

- More expensive in the short and midterm compared to Office 365
- Needs more hard drive space than Office 365 since almost nothing resides in the cloud.
CONCLUSION:
- MS Office 2019 is not for everyone, but those who prefer the function stability of pre-365 MS Office will appreciate it. Microsoft promotes and sees financial advantages in subscription services, so don’t be surprised if buy-to-own Office versions like Office 2019 become unavailable in the future.

The Ying and Yang of Wireless Earbuds
on October 16, 2018
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
We humans thrive on input beyond our immediate surroundings. In the old days if you wanted to hear a symphony or play, you “went to the concert or theater”. If you wanted to hear politicians speak or enjoy a sports game, you “went to see the event”. With the advent of the electronic devices, we now can bring everything to us. Many years ago we had to sit around a 50 pound assembly of wood, tubes and batteries, but then things became “portable”. At first that meant hefting a 10 pound boom box on our shoulders, but later we could fit everything into a pocket. The problem today remains that last 10 inches from our pocket to our ears, if we want private discrete listening we need to use ear-buds. Until that day comes when we can get devices that connect directly with our audio and visual cortexes (and it’s coming), we still have to stick vibrating device into our ear canal and hope that the weight of the device doesn’t pull it out of our ears at an inopportune moment. I apologize for this lengthy intro, but it is necessary to describe both the strengths and weaknesses of the Master & Dynamic - MW07 True Wireless In-Ear Headphones. Cell phone designers have more of less forced us to drop the wire between the device and the ear-buds by eliminating the 3.5 mm audio jack. The plus we gained was eliminating the main wire and the tendency for the ear-buds to be pulled out of our ears if the wire got caught. Also some people didn’t have pockets for larger phones and wanted to leave the phone in their purse. The negative we gained was that now the ear-buds needed to carry their own batteries and transmitters. These were called “wireless” ear-buds, but they still had a remaining wire between the left and right ear-bud to share one set of batteries and a transmitter. The single remaining wire could be looked at as a plus because like two mountain climbers tied together with a safety rope, if one ear-bud fell out, it would not be lost because the wire to the ear-bud in the other ear would make it easily retrievable. The last wire could also be considered a negative though because it can be awkward to run behind the head through long hair and also simply because it’s there. So, along comes TRUE Wireless Ear-Buds. The plus is that the last wire is gone, but the negative is that now we have to make the ear-buds large enough to accommodate two different type of transmitters and two sets of batteries making the ear-buds larger and heavier that their wired counterparts. YOU have to decide if the compromises outweigh the features gained.
FEATURES:
- No wires.
- Can be undetectable if the ears are covered by hair or a hat.
- 1 year limited warranty on the three non-replaceable batteries. 2 year limited warranty on the rest of the devices.
- A separate metal Charging/Carrying Case that can protect and recharge the ear-buds away from any other electrical source.
- LED lights on the Charging/Carrying Case that give the state of charge of both the ear-buds and the Charging-Carrying Case itself.
- Good audio quality throughout the normal human audio frequencies.
- Uses Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) to communicate between the left and right ear-buds with high resolution and very low power consumption. This works much better than Bluetooth in this application since the density of the skull would block or attenuate Bluetooth signals.
- Available in a variety of colors and textures
- Includes a large selection of ear canal sized soft ear-tips and “wings” to modify the contours of the ears-buds themselves to match your unique ear size and shape for a secure fit.
INCUDED ACCESSORY ATTACHMENTS:
- USB-3 to USB type C-out charging cable.
- An Adapter to add to the out-end of an older style USB-3 to Micro-USB-out cable to convert it to USB type C-out.
- Self powered Charging/Carrying Case
- Cloth Pouch to carry the Charging Case with the Ear-Buds inside the Charger
PROS:
- No Wires
- Good Audio Quality
- High Tech
- Ear-buds can be recharged by the Charging Case 3 times while away from other USB power sources.

CONS:
- More easily lost because, “No Wires”.
- If the Charging/Carrying Case is lost, there is no way to charge the Ear-Buds.
- The Right Ear-Bud will work alone, but it contains the Bluetooth transmitter, so if it is lost, the remaing Left Ear-bud will not work alone.
- The Volume, Pause and Bluetooth Pairing buttons are hard to use without dislodging the Ear-Buds from the ears. If during volume adjustment you separate the left and right Ear-Buds by more than about 12 inches, the Near Field Magnetic Induction shuts off and the volume can’t be adjusted.
- The ear-buds themselves have a relatively short 3.5 hour run-time between battery charges.
CONCLUSION:
- “True Wireless” Ear-Buds are today’s State-of-the-Art and from strictly an audio perspective, the Master & Dynamic - MW07 True Wireless In-Ear Headphones are great. However, as I mentioned above, everything comes with a trade-off and you have to decide for yourself if the true wirelessness makes it worth dealing with a few other issues. Even Master & Dynamic still offers fully wired Ear-Buds if you don’t mind the tangle of wires to get the same audio experience. You have to decide.
Please Note: Three Stars means "Average" not "Bad". These ear-buds are good at what they do.

A Real Workhorse
on October 12, 2018
Posted by: Daddio
from Wesley Chapel, Florida
In an effort to “Have the latest Gizmo”, I’ve moved over the years from an old HEAVY traditional upright vacuum to both a Robot vacuum and a cordless Stick Vacuum. Those two certainly lowered the physical effort required to clean the house. However, we live in a pine forest and I began to notice that as the batteries on the robot and the stick vacuums aged, I was manually picking up more and more little bits of debris like sticky pine needles stuck on the hardwood floors and bits of miscellaneous debris snared in the carpets after vacuuming with the lightweight battery units. I decided that I needed to go back to the POWER of a plug in. I was amazed at the volume of dirt that the Shark Apex DuoClean picked up the first time I used it. Not just the amount of dirt picked up, but the Apek’s capacity to hold so much dirt before emptying was required. I could do the whole house without stopping to empty the bagless canister. I can still let the robot do its thing every couple of days, but I’ll use this Workhorse for the weekly cleaning to really do a thorough job.
FEATURES:
- An extremely powerful suction that lifts dirt from deep within carpets.
- A rotary bristle brush and a rotary soft roller that together separate carpet fibers to remove embedded dirt and polish smudges from hardwood and tile floors.
- 5 year limited warranty

Surprisingly, This Camera Fills a Real Need
on September 19, 2018

Older People like me think of 1970’s cameras as dinosaurs with no practical modern value, but perhaps it’s because I’m living as a (very) mature adult and forgetting how young people socialize. When I asked my 22 yr old daughter to suggest a birthday gift I was surprised to hear that she really wanted one of these modernized Polaroid OneStep+ cameras after seeing one used at a party. Of course most everyone carries a technically far superior cameras to this one on their cell phone, but in a crowded table at a restaurant or party it’s not very practical to hand your cell phone around to everyone in the room, to get a laugh at a funny or poignant picture you just took. That’s a good way to lose a cell phone. Apparently a real film camera that produces a physical picture that they can actually handle and pass around is a unique and conversation starting experience for today’s young people. Most of them have seen Polaroid cameras in movies, music videos and old TV shows, but they’ve never seen one of them function in person. It’s quite a novelty.
What makes this modern duplicate of the original OneStep+ camera a modern camera, is its Bluetooth connectivity. Not only can the OneStep+ shutter be controlled (remote, manual mode, self timer, double exposure, noise trigger, light painting) from a free phone App, the App also saves every picture taken digitally and allows the user to email copies with captions to anyone they want to. It’s the best of old and new, blended together into a real party pleaser.
FEATURES:
- The user can experiment with three different film pack types (2 color, 1 black and white).
- Light exposure is adjustable.
- The OneStep+ camera electronics and flash can be charged from any cell phone charger or USB port through the included USB to Micro-USB cable. 60 day battery life.
- 1 year warranty
- Produces both physical and digital copies of each photo.
- Self timer and shutter can be triggered on camera or from cell phone within Bluetooth range.
- Close-up (1 foot) or wider lens can be selected with manual lever
PROS:
- Lots of fun at an adult party or for children at a family event.
- Three different film packs available for different effects and light conditions.

CONS:
- The different Film packs cannot be removed, swapped and reused without losing one picture each time, because of light exposure to the top film sheet.
- It doesn’t fold flat like the higher end old Polaroid cameras, so it is bulky to pack or carry by its neck strap.
CONCLUSION:
I never would have considered this reimagining of an old film camera if my daughter had not expressed interest. It is affordable and it will gather lots of attention wherever you use it. Enjoy.

Pays for Itself with No Modem/Router Rental Fees
on September 10, 2018
Posted by: Daddio

Many of us pay a monthly rental charge of $5 or more for our cable modem/routers without even being aware of it. If you are renting your modem, the sooner you purchase your own modem/router of any brand, the sooner you can begin to break even. Different cable companies use different proprietary software and communication protocols so you need to check that any potential purchased modem is compatible with your cable companies equipment. Most cable companies publish a list of acceptable modems on their website. This particular model of Arris SURFboard cable modem is mainly suited to Spectrum Cable, but Arris makes other models with the exact same features, but slightly different innards or software to suit every North American cable company.
The ARRIS SURFboard SBG7400AC2 Cable Modem/Wi-Fi Router has a fast processor and relatively powerful Wi-Fi transmitter, so chances are it will give greater Wi-Fi coverage and higher LAN speeds than your standard cable company rental equipment particularly if your had it for a few years. When I removed my Spectrum provided modem and replaced it with this Arris SURFBoard, my average speeds increased slightly, but otherwise everything worked the same and the change was unnoticeable.
FEATURES:
- DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) 3.0 speeds
- 4 Ethernet ports
- 2 year warranty
- Front mounted USB port for charging devices like cell phones or laptops.
PROS:
- DOCSIS 3.0 can provide Fiber-like speeds from cable companies using older copper coaxial wire networks to the home.
- Comes with a downloadable but optional Arris Secure Home Internet App (by McAfee) for extra internet security.

CONS:
- The Arris SURFBoard is slightly taller (9”) than some modems and should not be laid down horizontally because of the location of its ventilation holes. This could be a problem in tight spaces.
CONCLUSION:
- The ARRIS SURFboard SBG7400AC2 Cable Modem/Wi-Fi Router can save money over the long run and is at the high end of performance.

Does it work with a i Robot clean base?

Yes, it will after you add an evacuation port to the i6. That plastic piece comes in the box when you buy the charge base that sucks the dirt out of the i6's chamber when it docks to re-charge.

Does this include virtual wall?

Yes, after you send it out for the first-time to map all of the rooms, you can look at the map on your phone app. There you can create virtual barriers that the i6 will not cross. You can also name the rooms and create square "Do-not-go" zones in any of the rooms or halls. With this information you can instruct the i6 to clean just one or more of the rooms or throw-rugs you named and avoid the rest of the rooms.

Can the vacuum mop??

No, the i6 does a good job, but it's just a vacuum for hardwood/tile floors and carpet. Roomba has another model that squirts water on dirt and pulls it up with a "Swiffer" like disposable pad. You can see it on their website.

Would this work in a house with a guinea pig? I.e. be able to pick up poop and some hay (that’d be a huge bonus)

I owned a guinea pig MANY years ago so I'm sure it will pick up its poop as long as it's normal (for a guinea pig) and not diarrhea. The hay is another matter. As you can imagine, it all depends on the length and consistency of the hay. If it's too long or piled too high, almost no household vacuum can take stiff hay in. In this case, if the hay is relatively short (up to 1.5" or so), it should pick it up.

Do you have to have internet for it to work?

Technically it will vacuum without an internet connection, but it will never create a map of your floor plan or cover the rooms logically. Instead, it will bounce from wall to wall like a billiard ball until it runs down its battery. You can do this to cover a room or floor of your house that you don't intend to do again, but you would be wasting all of the advanced features this model has to offer.

Lighten household chores with this SHARK® ION™ vacuum system. The lithium-ion battery supplies a long-lasting charge, and the 0.66-quart dust cup and HEPA filter collect dirt, hair, and dander to prevent allergen buildup. This SHARK® ION™ vacuum system comes with a built-in power vacuum to help with those extra cleaning jobs.

Does this one map a grid to use each time like the robot one? Thanks

No. The Shark Ion is the less complicated type of Robo Vac that uses the Billiard Ball Navigation method where it goes more or less in a straight line until it bumps into something. The "Map a Grid" type has advantages, but they are larger, more expensive and if the home's entire floor plan doesn't have really good Wi-Fi coverage, it can get lost an confused in a far back corner of the house. I have both types and they both have their advantages and disadvantages.
