This release compiles every episode from the debut season of The Knick, a period medical drama that details the private and professional lives of the staff at New York's Knickerbocker Hospital in the early twentieth century. Grainger Hines, Katrina E. Perkins and Clive Owen co-star.
This is a fascinating series that takes place at the turn of the century in a hospital called the Knickerbocker aka The Knick. Clive Owen plays Dr. John Thackery who uses "revolutionary" medicine to treat his patients all the while battling his own demons. Best buy has an exclusive bonus disc that has extra content from the regular release (look for the sticker).
Two incredible stories of desert survival packed into one disc. The Way Back is based on the amazing true story of Siberian gulag prisoner Janusz (Jim Sturgess) and his daring escape walking over 4,000 miles of desert and snow-capped mountains to freedom in India. Day of the Falcon dramatizes the early days of the Arab oil industry as two rival sultans (Antonio Banderas and Mark Strong) come to terms with the vast river of "black gold" that runs beneath the neutral zone between their kingdoms.
I only watched The Way Back so I can't comment on the other film. Directed by Peter Weir, the man who made Fearless, The Truman Show, Witness, Gallipoli, Dead Poets Society, Master and Commander. He knows how to make a good drama and this one is no different (quality wise). Frankly anything he makes is worth watching once, especially when you have Ed Harris as one of the actors. Video and audio quality are great. One real special feature which is basically a making of.
This is one of those films that you're not sure where it's going or if there is a point to any of it, but, by the time the credits roll, it all comes together. Some people may not have the patience for it (it's a long movie at 147 minutes) but if you like good dramas, it's worth it. Picture and sound quality are great. Good supplements include audio commentary and q&a with the writer/director Paul Haggis (he also did Crash), making of.
There have been a LOT of movies made about WW2 (of which I've seen most), yet this film is still incredibly captivating. Performances all around are excellent and the technical specs of the disc are demo-worthy. The Best Buy Blu-ray bonus disc is icing on the cake with interesting extra features not found on the regular blu-ray disc!
