NASA and underdogs!

This is a story about the unsung heroines who helped calculate the orbits for the space program. We always see the astronauts and mission control, so it was refreshing to see a story behind the trenches. Not only that, but these women were brilliant at a time when women and especially black women didn't do math or science (or full time jobs!). I had no clue these women even existed and am rather ticked that they are only now getting widespread recognition. This is such an inspiring story for any young women looking to break into science, math, computer or engineering fields.
The acting was excellent and there was plenty of humor sprinkled around. There was a mix of old footage to supplement the new to give a well rounded look at what went on during the time of the launches. Anyone else bite their nails even though we know John Glenn made it ok? lol!
Although there was some uncomfortable racist/sexist stuff these women had to slog through, it was more of the subtle type which can be harder to deal with than in your face stuff. I liked how the people changed when confronted directly. I especially loved the 'this is the way it is' entrenched mentality that both whites and blacks had to overcome. It gave a mild yet realistic portrayal of the obstacles these ladies had to deal with in addition to their work and made me respect them even more.
I totally recommend this for anyone interested in the space program and science stuff.

Great addition to Star Wars saga!

I repeat. It's been a while since I've seen a Star Wars film this awesome. Star Wars hasn't been this great since the Original Trilogy. I thought the prequels were fun, but nowhere near as good as the OT. The Force Awakens was ok, but it isn't as great as so many people are proclaiming. Rogue One on the other hand feels like a Star Wars film. Looks like a Star Wars film, too. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is the daughter of the man who helped design/create the Death Star. Thanks to the Empire, she loses her mother and is raised by a pretty shady guy named Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) who then abandons her at 16. She eventually joins forces with a quirky band of Rebels in order to steal information about the Death Star. This is the same group of rebels that gets mentioned in the opening crawl of the 1st Star Wars film.
The movie kept my interest and gets better after a second viewing. Donnie Yen, who plays Chirrut Imwe, is the highlight of the film. Not only because of his martial arts skills, but because of what his character represents. His unfailing faith in the force is something that really hit home for me. The Droid K-2 (Alan Tudyk) was another cool character in the film that provided a lot of comic relief. This is a great companion piece to the Original Star Wars Trilogy and it gives me... HOPE that The Last Jedi will be an improvement over The Force Awakens. I think 5 stars is fair.

One of the most recent best zombie movies

Watching this movie makes a person realize what is wrong with most zombie movies; they're over the top to the point of being stale.
This movie uses ideas from other movies and tones them down enough so that they're able to be appreciated. A lot of zombie movies have someone being bitten, and suddenly all their intestines are flying out all over the place. It's not something people generally think about, just even thinking about it right now I notice, even hungry lions don't disembowel people that quickly. Additionally, and something that is much appreciated, on this movie people don't just offer up bodies parts to be bitten by zombies like they do in most movies. They get turned to zombies from being taken by complete surprise or being overwhelmed or being much physically smaller, to the point that they cannot defend themselves. Basically, it's more realistic. One on one, unlike on other movies, these zombies would get the beat down of a lifetime. Additionally, people actually use defensive measures against the zombies, like wrapping their arms up while fighting zombies so they can't be bitten. Just small, common-sense stuff that bad directors and/or writers simply choose to ignore with lesser zombie movies.
Come to think of it, almost all good zombies movies have humans eventually winning the fight against zombies (in one form or another) once they regroup. Really, how long would humanity lose against a creature that's slow (compared to other predatory animals, like lions or really almost anything) that can only attack with its mouth? Not only that, they're dumber than animals. It just doesn't make any sense. And this movies indirectly addresses that.
The story is really basic; it is a man who hadn't been that great a father, and he is taking his daughter to see her mother for her birthday. He's the main character of the movie, and by the end of the movie he has developed into a more likable and much more interesting character. Very minor spoiler (because the movie does not go into this at all), but apparently the main character worked at a biotech company and they were responsible for the zombie outbreak. I wish the movie were long enough to delve into that more, but even without it, it made the movie just that much more interesting. It also gave the main character a chance to show his humanity, while talking to a co-worker on the phone. They could make a sequel to the movie based on this bit of information alone, but I don't know if I want a sequel, because unless they do as amazing a job as they did on this one, it would only cheapen the story, in my opinion.
The film also delves into a large variety of emotion for such a basic plot; it covers human decency, human depravity, disgust, love, revenge, hope, despair, relief, tension, protective instincts, vulnerability and relying on others (especially the husband with the pregnant wife), and more. The plot may be a "standard" plot, but it's by no means boring.
Also, there's a cute Asian cheerleader in it! That never hurts. But that does remind me one one point; there is no nudity in the movie, the gore is not overdone so even that and the blood are not that bad. Basically, it's a movie I would watch with my family. Maybe not really little kids, but it's not a movie I would be like "Darn, can't watch that with my grandma." And that felt surprisingly nice.

Greatest WWII movie since Saving Private Ryan...

I was astounded! I finished the movie and realized that WWII soldiers were truly the greatest generation. It is an incredible portrayal of an amazingly courageous man who stared into the face of death and wrangled a true miracle from the flames of death and destruction. "Just one more..." - and to maintain his convictions in the face of ridicule with such an intensity - his steadfast beliefs and his true integrity - he changed their minds. Point to note - NOT FOR CHILDREN!! They spare nothing in portraying war and how soldiers die. America should be honored to have had a son of such true conviction.

Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke star in the fifth season of the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, a show based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George R.R. Martin and adapted for television by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. All ten episodes of Season Five are featured in this collection, as Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) joins the mysterious House of Black and White to become an assassin, Daenerys (Clarke) and Tyrion (Dinklage) join forces, Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) continues her quest for power at the expense of Cersei (Headey), and the villainous Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) continues to leave a trail of terror.

Game of Thrones continues to amaze!

Season 5 is very good. There's a new king (because honestly, what's a GOT season without a new king waiting to be killed by 6 different armies). The power struggles continue between.....well....everyone. While highly entertaining, the whole season does feel like a transition to set up huge changes for season 6.
Arya Stark continues her journey to Braavos to meet the faceless man, in what is one of the most interesting story arcs of the series.
Sansa Stark is FINALLY starting to be an interesting character after laboring through 4 seasons of her expecting everything to just turn out well because she's rich. She's finally realized that there is a 'game' to game of thrones and that she has to play it. (She stinks at playing the game. But at least she's playing it.) Her fate is left unclear.
Oh, and there are finally dragons in this show that is supposed to have a lot of dragons. They don't show up for more than a few seconds until near the end of the season, but when dragons finally show up to do something they do it with a vengeance! It makes the wait for drag action well worth it! And the White Walkers stop being imaginary boogeymen and show up with authority as well.
Overall the production value of the series continues to be insanely high. The sets, the costumes, the props....they all create a visual image so real that by the end of each episode you feel like you just spent an hour in Westeros. The acting adds so much more on top of that, without a single bad player in the cast. The CGI is flawless and blends naturally with the live action and live sets. It doesn't look hokey or "updated Star Wars" at all. It's solid use of CGI, which is a refreshing change.
I won't talk about the details about how this season ended, but to call it a cliff hanger is an understatement. Before the credits roll on the final episode you're already excited fro season 6 to start.
Blu Ray is the only way to own this series. Regular DVD just doesn't present the detail that makes this show so phenomenal.

Fantastic true story

Robert Zemeckis is clearly a director who loves to push the boundaries of new visual technology. He used visual effects very skillfully in Back to the Future and Forrest Gump and used new motion-capture technology for the computer animated characters in The Polar Express. The Walk is an awesome visual experience, which comes as close as a movie can to making you feel like you are there in the space between the two World Trade Center towers. I’ve not yet seen the documentary Man on Wire about the high-wire walker Philippe Petit’s 1974 walk between the twin towers, but I’m even more interested now that I’ve seen this brilliantly made movie.
The casting of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as the impetuous French high-wire walker Philippe Petit, is perfect. As a character, he’s both likable and unlikable, but like with other brash “artists” (which is how the character views himself) such as Van Gogh or Beethoven, you as a viewer become obsessed with watching him even though he’s a hothead and completely obsessive. The tasks he went through to illegally get up to the top of both twin towers, with the aid of several accomplices, are fascinating to watch. I hope to learn more on the documentary or his book about what specific plot elements were made up for the movie.
One of the ways the movie kept me from getting more scared when he’s doing the walk is that there are only a few shots which look down toward the ground, and they looked to me more like a computer game image than like a photographic image, so my mind didn’t get tricked into thinking I was about to fall. If someone is really scared of heights, I’m sure they’d not even be considering this movie anyway.
There are excellent visual transitions between scenes, an example being where he looks at a building and then it transitions to a model of the building which he built for envisioning a high-wire-crossing. The swift pace of the whole movie is due to the visual transitions, the narration, and the music. Because of the energetic pace, I was enthusiastic by the time he was finally making the triumphant walk between the World Trade Center towers. The suspenseful events of the night of preparation also add a lot to the movie’s dramatic power. There’s one part where a guard comes within about an inch of discovering one of his accomplices on the ground, like the climax of The Sound of Music. I have a suspicion that was added for dramatic tension, but I guess I’ll find out in either his book or the documentary.
Complicating his difficulties, he has an injured foot from stepping into a nail, but has brought his friends over from France and can’t delay too long for their sakes. He additionally has a friend named Jeff (who looks kind of like Elijah Wood) who is afraid of heights but quietly loyal to him.
The energy of the movie is fantastic. One scene moves into another at such a swift pace that I felt almost excited for him to do something that is pretty foolhardy. However, I came to see that Philippe Petit and Nik Wallenda know exactly what they’re doing when they do high-wire crossings with no safety net below them. They have a rod in their arms to help them be more balanced, and they wouldn’t do it if there was a heavy wind. The sense of balance high-wire walkers have within themselves is really hard to believe.
It always improves the movie, rather than killing the energy of the movie, when the Philippe character narrates what happens between scenes, standing atop the Statue of Liberty. It’s an interesting narrative device to have him standing at the Statue of Liberty’s balcony and showing you where the twin towers are (were, I mean). I wasn’t even that sad as I thought about September 11, because this movie immersed me so much in its 1973-1974 world, in such an enthusiastic “joy of living” way.
Alan Silvestri is always a great composer. I suspected he was the composer when I heard some of the music, knowing that he had done work for previous Zemeckis movies and also knowing his style of melody and orchestration. His music in The Walk is good at capturing a sense of wonder and adding elements of danger to that beautiful melody, kind of like his Night at the Museum melody does. The sound effects are also really important for making you feel like you’re watching Philippe really walk across the wire. Sometimes an alternative reality gets presented in the movie which he narrates, as he talks about what he fears will happen and you start to see and hear it for a few seconds. That narrative device is made more effective by the sound effects.
There is so much imaginative collaboration that went into this movie, which really paid off. It feels like every component of the moviemaking became a unified whole

Good M. Night film

In THE VISIT, Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and her younger brother, Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) set out on a week-long trip to spend and visit with their mother’s parents. Their mom (Kathryn Hahn) left home as a teenager after horrible fight and has never spoken to them since then. Through the miracle of the Internet, her parents have located their long-estranged daughter and have begged to spend a week with their grandchildren while they still can. Becca and Tyler’s father abandoned his wife and children and moved out to California with a younger woman and Becca’s mom has really been stressing out lately. She and Tyler convince their Mom it will be a great idea. Also, while the kids are gone, they are sending Mom on a cruise with her boyfriend for some needed rest and relaxation (none of them have been away from each other since dad left). In the meantime, Becca is a budding filmmaker and decides to make a documentary of the whole experience, in the hopes that it can bring some much needed catharsis and closure to her mother.
So, the kids board a train and set out to meet Pop Pop (Grandpa played by Peter McRobbie) and Nana (Grandma played by Deanna Dunagan). The couple live away from town in the country, foreshadowing the sense of eeriness and foreboding that will occur. At first things are fine. Nana loves to bake, Pop Pop is funny, and both grandparents are so pleased to see their grandchildren. However, that night after bed time, things start to get spooky. When morning comes, it’s as though nothing happens. But the kids know something just isn’t quite right and the strange things that happened on the first night of their visit quickly escalate.
I really enjoyed THE VISIT. I found it an entertaining romp of good fun. There were parts that I found really, really funny. There were other parts that scared me. There was even one scene in the movie that completely grossed me out. I enjoyed the variety in tone of the movie, but I know some people won’t. The movie has some great acting. There’s a major twist in the movie, but neither me or none of the people I was with figured it out. Also, Kathryn Hahn plays the mom and I really like her as an actress.
The film is being marketed as a “found footage” movie, but it’s really not that. Instead, it’s actually a faux documentary (not a mockumentary). Found footage movies are just that: they are supposed to be pieces of film footage that were “found” after some horrifying event. Mockumentaries are faux documentaries that mock the documentary format (thing anything by Christopher Guest). THE VISIT isn’t either one of those. It’s a fictional movie, but one that if filmed and edited together as a real documentary. Although the subject matter is different, THE VISIT most reminded me of a small little movie I saw several years ago entitled AMERICAN ZOMBIE. I liked that movie and I liked THE VISIT.
With that said, one really can’t talk about THE VISIT without talking about the director, M. Night Shyamalan. Fifteen years ago, Shyamalan was one of the biggest director/writer/producers in Hollywood. Things started going downhill in his career with THE VILLAGE and until now have just gotten worse. I actually liked THE VILLAGE, but didn’t think it was as strong as other Shyamalan movies. I also love LADY IN THE WATER. However, I hated THE HAPPENING and have yet to see THE LAST AIRBENDER or AFTER EARTH, although I’ve heard they are both awful. Although the past few years have been rough for Shyamalan, THE VISIT is a movie that shows he still has it. I believe years from now it will be the film that is pointed to as the turn around for his career. Hopefully, he will be able to build upon the success of this feature and continue making the great movies he used to make.

Great action thriller

I have waited ever so patiently to see this movie. When I saw the trailer earlier this year, I did research on the movie which led me to discover that director Denis Villeneuve (who also directed 2013's Prisoners and Enemy) also directed Sicario. Not surprisingly, his movie Sicario is not only suspenseful and thrilling, but it delivers some outstanding performances.
From the moment Sicario starts we see Emily Blunt's character Kate Macer graces the screen with a fearless but alert mindset. Josh Brolin's character Matt Graver is one you never are sure whether or not if you should trust. And while both Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin are terrific in their respectable roles, one has to truly appreciate the dark and serious portrayal of Alejandro by actor Benicio Del Toro. His character is both towering and intimidating by all means, and I would not be at all surprised to see his name pop up come awards season.
Even better, the story of Sicario is easy to follow. Mind you, Sicario is not one of those non-stop action films, but because it mixes suspense, action, and plots the scenarios with the Mexican Cartel/FBI in a believable way. I can not help but to applaud Denis Villeneuve for the crafting this timely and well shot thriller that is Sicario. Make no mistake, if you are looking for a thrilling time at the movies, then look no further than Sicario. Great cast, believable story, and brilliantly directed.
My Consensus: GO SEE Sicario

I'll let you know right now, these FIVE BDs come in one
of those horrible--cardboard and glued plastic---tri-fold holders with SLOTS. That is, if you want movie #5, you remove it like any OTHER
push and press spindle-post. If you want disc # 2 or #4, you push the spindle post and set disc #1 or #3 someplace else. Then, carefully,
push and press, while sliding the disc away and down from its holder. Re-insert the disc you DIDN'T want, and do the process, reversed, to
get back to "normal" again...after you see the disc you WANTED in the first place.
Oh! Read my headline for another problem with t-h-i-s, heavier, unusual disc holder. And, YES!, I prefer those REGULAR disc holders!
SHORT 'n' SWEET 'n' S-O-U-R:
B-A-D NEWS==> The first t-h-r-e-e movies are just---2006---ten-year-old [re-packaged] Blu-Rays of current DVD-quality with subtitles,
and, 5.1 Dolby Digital sound, in ENGLISH; FRENCH; and SPANISH. In fact, the video quality is actually WORSE than many HD-DVDs
MI:III's Blu-ray disc actually says "disc #1" on it!
GOOD NEWS==> MI:4 is ENGLISH 7.1 DOLBY TRUE HD; FRENCH; PORTUGUESE; and SPANISH 5.1 DD.
" " " " " " " " " " ==> MI:5 is ENGLISH DOLBY ATMOS (backward compatible to 7.1/5.1 Surround Sound); French/Spanish/Portuguese:5.1 DD.
There A-R-E other collections of the, previous, THREE and FOUR of the franchise's movies' collections, but, many of the reviews mention
that the Blu-ray mastering of the---first three---movies were inadequate in, both, audio a-n-d video.
The reviews, I've read, OFTEN mention "only the fourth movie LOOKED like an actual Blu-ray". And, indeed, the sound, come up short
----VERIFIED!----on Mission Impossible movies one through three. Mission Impossible four and five blew my size 16 socks right off!

The plot of Terminator Genisys basically revolves around John Connor (Jason Clarke) sending Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to save John's mother Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke, no relation in real life to Jason Clarke). Sounds pretty familiar to us Terminator fans, right? What Genisys does is builds on the plots in the previous films by keeping the main plot similar to the first movie, but having Kyle meet with an altered timeline in 1984. This Sarah is much different from the Sarah he was expecting (and much different from the Sarah we saw in the original film) in that she's already a bad-A and knows all about Kyle being sent back to save her and the Resistance and the war against the machines. In fact, she's been being trained by the reprogrammed T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) for many years prior to Kyle showing up.
You know in Back to the Future 2 when Marty goes back to 1955 Hill Valley for the almanac and you see the other Marty (from the first Back to the Future) trying to do his thing and get his parents back together? So you have a new movie but still get to see events from the first movie again, like the Enchantment Under the Sea dance scenes? Every time I watch BTTF2, getting to revisit and experience that scene from a different perspective than the first movie makes me so excited, and Terminator Genisys made me feel that same way at times. I've seen all of the Terminator movies multiple times, mostly because my husband is a huge fan of the franchise. They're all enjoyable to an extent (some more than others), but, to be honest, it's been a couple of years since I've watched the previous movies. Even without having seen the other movies in the series recently, I still enjoyed Genisys and have to say that I don't think it's necessary to have seen the previous films recently, or at all. That being said, I do think it could be beneficial and add to your experience to watch or rewatch them before seeing Genisys. The parts about this film that I thought were the most fun were when we got to revisit scenes or hear similar lines from the previous films. It brought the nostalgia factor way up for me, which I loved. There were some things I missed that I didn't realize were nods back to previous films in the series, until my husband leaned over and whispered to me about them, so it doesn't hurt to rewatch the series beforehand, or at least the first two. Again, not necessary, but could amp up your enjoyment.
Bottom line - I've always enjoyed science fiction and time travel movies, and this one was a winner in my book. I honestly thought this movie was great. It was action-packed but also pretty funny. It was nostalgic while still being inventive and feeling fresh. I ended up enjoying it way more than I expected and had a really fun time.
