Never been to a psychiatrist?

This HBO series follows a series of patients visiting a psychiatrist. A half hour at a time. We also see the psychiatrist's family life.
Gabriel Byrne plays the Psychiatrist, Paul. Everything revolves around Paul. His patients are played well by a host of well known, and not so well know actors. Melissa George does a wonderful job as the patient who turns into a heart throb. Blair Underwood is Alex the egotistical-vulnerable Air Force pilot. Embeth Daviditz is the wife with a conception problem. And Diane Wiest plays Paul's psychiatrist, who becomes a crucial process of this month long, five days a week process. But must important is the find of the series: Mia Wasikowska who plays the would olympic gymnist, Sophia. (Try to remember that name. Mia is going to be a major star.)
If you want action, this really isn't for you. But if you like to delve into what makes people tick, try watching it a day at a time. Little hailed, this is one of the best cable series done.
What's great about it: Weeks with five patients at a psychiatrist
What's not so great: Some sick people get boring

Heigl has come a long way since Rosewell. But she'd probably be better off if she had stayed back with the aliens.
I'm sure many people, not just women, would identify with this film. Weddings are usually fun for the bridal couple and their parents. Until the parents pay for the whole thing.
There aren't really any jokes here. Instead there is a "feel good" attempt at a pleasant movie. The 27 Dresses really prove that if you put an attractive woman in just about anything and she makes it look better. But she can't make a film out of nothing.
What's great about it: It's Pretty and predictable
What's not so great: Predictable

A Song for a Title

This film has some interesting performances. Jeremy Sisto, Vanessa Marcil, Poppy Montgomery. . .all before we had much of an idea who they were.
Sisto ties everything together as a screen writer who returns to Frisco and meets up with old Friends and Not So Friends.
Montgomery provides a nice turn as one of his old friends. She certainly is not Without A Trace in this one. Marcil is barely here, but she does provide some interesting twists.
The female musician is very nice. The music is interesting. The plot has some nice turns. And we wonder if we ever know what happened to Marcil.
Worth a Saturday Afternoon.
What's great about it: Some nice early performances
What's not so great: This is Indy Style

A Well Done Film
on July 25, 2008

This is one of those films that used to be made in Europe. A nicely developed story, with a real purpose. Great acting. Nice conflict. Nice feeling. Nice resolution.
That's the definition of comedy, after all. A happy ending.
Stanley Tucci does some of his best work. Jena Malone shows she is much more as she grows up. The scenery is wonderful. The music is interesting.
If you want a movie, skip this one. But if you think the word film means something else, then put it on your list.
What's great about it: Well composed, well acted
What's not so great: If you're into action, not your cup of adrenaline

When your dreams are better than your life
on July 23, 2008

This is a film about lucent dreaming. Unfortunately it decides to turn lucent dreaming into a horror film of sorts.
A semi-successful former musician decides that his dreams are better than his real life. He has a dream girl. And lusts after her.
He goes to a guy who holds dreaming classes at a Y or some such community center. He wrote his own book in the form of concrete poetry.
All of this is good. Penolpe Cruz doesn't say much but is a great image.
But this is a psychological horror film that begins to plant psychological seeds. It's not Exorcist. But one of those things that can haunt you later.
What's great about it: This is a tightly developed film
What's not so great: If you're a dreamer, stay away

Too much War Imagination
on July 22, 2008

Here's the premise. The US moves from Iraq to Iran. And now we don't have enough soldiers. So we reinstitute the draft. Day Zero is the first day of the new draft. We follow three guys as they cope with being drafted.
And there's the first problem. They're all guys. If we reinstute a draft it will be for everyone. Second problem, they're drafting people up to 35. That's WWII level. Third they have all of two weeks to report for service.
The three guys we get to watch are a Lawyer, a Writer and a Cab Driver. Gee, wonder how they chose those three types. And they all know each other because they drink together.
Now here's the thing. These people aren't real. They aren't really facing being drafted. Viet Nam isn't that far away. There are enough people still alive who knew what was going on. There were movies done back then. And the makers of this film present three totally absurd reactions.
Go talk to your grandparents. Or parents if your a bit older. Go watch some late sixties and seventies films. This one just is too much imagination.
What's great about it: Good performance by Hirsch
What's not so great: Done by someone without real memories

A Teen Tapes His Last Day
on July 21, 2008
Posted by: hroeder
from Fort Thomas, KY
One young man who has been emboldened by reading philosophers like Kant has decided it's time to end his life. And he's going to do this by recording his last day on earth, his family, his classmates at the local high school.
He's a pleasant, intelligent young man. And his friends are normal kids. One learns what he is doing and decides it should be a more than one person event. Soon we have a suicide pact.
The tape is going to be States Evidence when investigators look at what has happened to cause the young man to take his life.
There are some cliches here. But all in all this is a chilling spiral that goes where angels fear to tread.
What's great about it: Insights into News Around the Country
What's not so great: This is Chilling

A Decent Remake of a Standard Western
on July 20, 2008

from Fort Thomas, KY
This is a nicely developed story. A Bad Guy with a little bit of heart. A Good Guy trying to make good against the system. A wife who disappears from the plot early on. (It is a remake of a 50's Western.) And a rebellious son who has to come along in search of danger.
It's probably realistic that a 14 year old would take on this journey back in the Old West. But somehow this version just doesn't sit well. Seems unbelievable.
Crowe is good, as usual. The directing is well done. There is some tension.
So why wouldn't I recommend it to a friend? Because it's the same old same old. This is a Clint Eastwood type of tale. Again. This is a posse chasing a bad guy chasing money, again. And despite the style, it is still just a Western. Clint Eastwood provided a Few More Thrills.
What's great about it: Maintains your interest
What's not so great: Nothing New under the Sun

Henry's first acts
on July 19, 2008

If you're interested in Henry VIII then you might want to try the cable series The Tudors. Natalie Dormer is much more convincing as Anne Boleyn than Natalie Portman. Scarlette Johansen somehow can't pull off the period piece. She just looks too modern and doesn't qualify as a Tudor.
Everything here is pretty. But nothing is really convincing. We get the idea that the Boleyns were an ambitious family. Dad and Uncle were really bad guys. And Anne was just a plain shrew. Who would hurt anyone for her own benefit. But it isn't convincing here. It's not real here. And Momma Boleyn just is too modern in her concerns. A good actress here, but the writing just isn't period.
The extras on the DVD are almost inaccessible. Someone got fancy with their set up. It's way too late to be making that kind of mistake with a Blu-ray disc.
All in all, go buy the first season of The Tudors. You'll be more entertained and learn more about British history and be more immersed.
What's great about it: Probably historically accurate
What's not so great: Some people just can't lose modern
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Civ jumps to Gaming Platforms
on July 18, 2008

I've played every Civilization since the first one. In fact I believe it should be in every Middle School classroom. That said:
There are things I don't like about this one. I can't customize the game as I'd like. The maps are uniformally too small. And the showing of the building of the Wonders has been eliminated. The new gifts from the Phoneicians is OK. But kind of silly.
Fireaxis has promised a weekly game. I did the first one and didn't like the fact that I couldn't save it. It took me several hours to complete and I don't really always have hours to play a game.
In previous versions each of the advisors actually spoke in the language of the leader. This all seems gibberish. And some of the cartoon advisors, and leaders are a bit, well, cartoony.
Overall it's a good port. I realize there are limitations with the graphics of the PS3 system. It takes a lot of memory. But if games like Assassins Creed can make Kirsten Bell recognizeable, then so should a game like this. Yes it's memory consuming for each character to speak in language and the game systems have limited hard drive space for this type of file.
It's Civ. It's replayable. Hopefully the scenarios will add some life. And hopefully updates will allow for different resolution maps with more players.
What's great about it: It's Civ on a PS3
What's not so great: Not playing as many opponents, some of the cartoons
