Although the Silence of the Lambs is a beloved well known film classic, few know that it is technically a sequel to this movie, Manhunter. The Silence of the Lambs book was a sequel to the novel Red Dragon, which was adapted into this film. Although not as masterfully crafted as Lambs, Manhunter is still worth a look. Especially for those who enjoy the 80's. The colorful and grainy visuals set the atmosphere perfectly, and William Peterson owns the role of Will Graham. Although I will say later adaptations of the novel have portrayed the titular Red Dragon killer far better than he is here. As to be expected, Scream Factory's release of the film is guaranteed to satisfy. It features 2 cuts of the film, plenty of bonus features and even a two-sided cover insert so that you get to decide which cover you want to display the film with.

10 Cloverfield Lane is a masterful suspense thriller, with an incredible performance from John Goodman and edge of your seat excitement. One part Hitchcock, one part H.G. Wells, this film is filmmaking at it's finest, and stands out from the countless reboots sequels and adaptations flooding the market place each year. Highly recommended.

A minor misjudged masterwork.

Crimson Peak was slammed by critics when it was released, as the trailers had made it look like a haunted house fright fest with ghosts as villains. So naturally those expecting that, were massively disappointed when the movie turned out to be a gothic romance, high on atmosphere and set design. But don't let that fool you. Crimson Peak is still a horror film. And an eerie one at that. The true horror, is love, and the terrible things it can drive people to do. The set design is some of the most extraordinarily amazing I have ever seen. The house is more scary than the villains it's so thoughtfully creepy, and all actors involved sell the environment and it's scares like pros. If the Victorian era is your cup of tea, Crimson Peak makes for a great Halloween treat.

Spotlight is an important film. It sheds light on the controversy and events surrounding the Boston Globe's investigation into molestation charges in the Catholic Church. It wholly respects the victims involved with the event while also detailing it for those who were not there to witness it. It features powerhouse performances from all involved (especially Mark Ruffalo) and the writing and directing is tight and chilling. It's a movie everyone needs to see, and well worthy of it's best picture win.

Napoleon Dynamite is like a Wes Anderson influenced high school comedy centered around "the weird kid". It has little plot, but lots of laughs and quirky character moments. But at times it's quirkiness can be overwhelming and off putting. Still, if your a fan of Wes Anderson and weirdness, you'lol feel right at home with Napoleon Dynamite.

After 3 unsuccessful attempts to star in a comic book franchise, Ryan Reynolds finally struck gold with Deadpool, a genre bending absurd comedy action film with balls and teeth to boot. The humor is on point for the character and Reynolds gives a career defining performance. But the real heroes are writers Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick who's humor style as comedic writers fit Deadpool perfectly. The blu-Ray also has lots of great bonus features including the hilarious "Deadpool's fun sack". Highly recommended.

The Hateful Eight is the appropriately titled eighth film from Quentin Tarantino. It's like playing Clue, but really really intensely with an Ennio Morricone score. The film is only for those who like their movies stylistically brutal, stone cold, and mean as a hornet. If you've seen a Tarantino movie before, you know what to expect. Unfortunately the disc is light on special features, which is quite desirable for a film like this. It also would have been nice to get the overture that played before the movie in its theatrical release.

Watchmen is an incredibly dark and philosophically rich film that both dissects and parodies superhero films. With the current influx of Adam and Marvel films I would argue it's satire is more relevant today than it was when it came out. The directors cut is the superior cut without a doubt as you get to spend even more time these fascinating characters. The film is also one of the most visually stunning of the 21st century.

British Insanity: the Movie

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is an incredibly odd movie. It's complicated beyond comprehension, but your always on board and having fun. The characters are insane and enjoyable and all have THICK accents that are fun to listen to. The movie is like a British coked up version of Resevoir Dogs, as it flips around from character to character and constantly adds layers to the plot in nearly every scene. Also has a very dry sense of humor, and witty dialogue. Unfortunately, visually, the film is ugly. Everything is so yellow it almost looks like somebody urinated on the film negative. It does kind of work for the movie, but it can be repulsive at times. Overall, it's not for everyone, but those with a fondness for punchy dialogue, British humor and post- Pulp Fiction "hip gangster" movies will find little to dislike.
