Better than the first, and the best since Avenger

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is not only a great sequel but perhaps the best standalone Marvel Studios film to date. Trust me, I don't say that lightly. I wasn't overly fond of the Captain's first feature, and my reaction to most of the Marvel Studios films has been mixed. With that in mind, coming out of the theater I have to say 'The Winter Soldier' isn't only a great superhero movie, a great standalone Marvel Studios film, but that Captain America: The Winter Soldier may even be better than The Avengers!
At the start of the film Steve Rogers (AKA Captain America) is still acclimating to modern life after having been frozen since WWII, and is working under the orders of Nick Fury and SHIELD. Already having doubts about SHIELD's motives and methods Rogers suddenly finds himself at the center of a conflict festering at the heart of SHIELD and must fight alongside other agents to stop a villainous plot to establish a new world order. Along the way he'll have to face a dark figure which may be connected to his past and decide what freedom truly stands for.
The Winter Soldier is arguably the smartest Marvel Studios film to date. While still providing the fantastical set-pieces, humor, and over the top action spectacles one would expect from a Marvel film The Winter Soldier's antagonist is grounded in real-world fears, and possibilities. For this reason I felt more invested in the film's action than any other Marvel film to date. While movies like The Avengers and the first Iron Man were fun superhero romps The Winter Soldier actually feels like it is addressing real-world concerns regarding government secrecy and drone warfare in a way which made me feel invested in the characters, and the stakes they were up against. The decision to make it an internal, spy-movie type struggle also quelled any questions like "Where the rest of The Avengers?!" While that constantly bothered me in Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 I never asked that during The Winter Soldier because the nature of the villain makes it believable that most of the film's events are covered up and kept from the other heroes' knowledge.
Then there's Rogers himself who truly defines himself as a superhero in this film. In his first outing and The Avengers Captain America always seemed like a wet blanket, coming across as a giant flag draped Boy Scout. While he was likable enough he never warranted in-depth analysis. That all changes in The Winter Soldier. Here Rogers' reflects on his past, question his own values and whether or not he can uphold them in this cloak and dagger modern world. He is a fish out of water and he knows it. His commitment to remain true to the values that carried him through WWII becomes his character's greatest strength rather than holding his character back. Through clever writing, and tender character moments The Winter Soldier transformed Steve Rogers into quite possibly my favorite character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (sorry Tony Stark).
What ultimately sets the Captain's new adventure apart from other Marvel Studios films is that The Winter Soldier is the first standalone Marvel movie since the original Iron Man I've felt actually stood proud on its own two feet. It features everything we know and love about this universe without feeling burdened by references other Marvel Studios films. While Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World had me saying "Can't wait to see the next Avengers" The Winter Soldier had me leaving the theater saying: "I can't wait to see the next /Captain America/ movie!"
For this reason I am giving my full recommendation for Captain America: The Winter Soldier!

Containing 18 episodes, the fourth volume of Simpson creator Matt Groening's Futurama follows Fry, Leela, and Bender, and the rest of the Futurama crew as they contend with wacky intergalactic adventures as only they can.

Robots Rule!

I have never laughed so hard as I have at the Planet Express crew. Matt Groening pokes fun at everything imagineable and it all adds up to absolute hilarity!
You've got a displaced human, a one-eyed alien love interest, a homicidal robot, a scientist boss with a love of sending his crew on hopeless missions... and, of course, I can't leave out Kif, the straight guy to Zapp Brannigan (an even more arrogant send-up of Captain Kirk). In other words, great characters with equally funny storylines. The writing is absolutely brilliant and never underestimates the audience's intelligence.
You just can't go wrong with this set. I have pared down my DVD collection, but couldn't bring myself to part with ANY volume of Futurama. In my opinion, it outshines The Simpsons by far. So do yourself a favor... order all four volumes and sit back and enjoy!

There is only one choice, and it's Divergent!!!

A lot of folks compare Divergent to Hunger games, and they're right! I saw this at the theater on opening week and wanted to go back, but never made it. So I've been waiting anxiously for it to come out on DVD. In the interim I began to wonder if I was going to enjoy it as much on the small screen. I've gotta say, I love it at least as much now as I did then, if not more. The characters are solid creations, the writing is fabulous, and even the sets are easily believable. You can look at this future Chicago and say "yeah, I could believe that's how things could look in 100 years. Shailene Woodley is fabulous as Tris. You can believe that this young woman is just that good, and has the strength and courage to face the things she does. And Tris' relationship with Four is genuine and strong, without it taking over the plot. Not to mention that Theo James, as Four, is a handsome young man! They learn that they can trust one another early on and that trust deepens throughout the movie. It's very nice to have a relationship that just grows, without the soap opera angst that you so often see in this type of movie. Kate Winslet, as Jeanine is a very low key, driven villain, quietly frightening as she creates her own version of hell on earth. One actress/role that I fell in love with instantly, was Ashley Judd, as Tris' mother, Natalie. She was very much the earth mother type, but shows her fangs and claws when things got rough. I just wish she had a bigger role in the movie! Finally, as this is the first role I've seen her in, I have got to say that Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet created quite a lovely, talented child in Zoe Kravitz ;) Finally, Jai Courtney, as Eric, is the embodiment of cold, heartless evil!
I could go on and on, but I'll simply finish by saying, see this movie!

The fourth season of Workaholics continues to follow three hard-partying friends just out of college: Blake (Blake Anderson), Adam (Adam DeVine) and Anders (Anders Holm). Though the roommates have entered the next stage of their young adult lives working as telemarketers, debauchery gets in the way of their profession more often than not.

If you have a couple of good friends that you like to be goofy around and be dumb with then you'll enjoy this show. Ders, Blake, and Adam are three friends who live in a house together and work together as well. They do everything from partying together to going on crazy adventures. It's an awesome show and this has been the best season yet. Adam is the funniest on the show and overall its's just a awesome show to watch!

Hard to Imagine That Kind of Courage

Lone Survivor brings to life the events of Operation Redwing as first brought to us by Marcus Luttrell in his bestselling book of the same name. The story is well known and has been discussed far and wide for years. The overall theme of the movie is true to the book but there are differences as would be expected from Hollywood. In some respect the movie tones down some of the more difficult and gut wrenching parts of the book like when the name “Marcus” repeatedly gets yelled by his dying friend and fellow warrior. This does not detract from the overall content of the movie and for some viewers it may actually make the movie more palatable and less painful.
I like that the movie begins with real footage of SEAL training and uses pictures of the real SEALs of Operation Redwing throughout the movie in a variety of scenes. Director Peter Berg adds many subtle touches that may go unknown to the casual viewer yet pays tribute to the SEAL community. The actors do a very good job throughout the film and show the camaraderie of SEAL Team 10 and the SEAL community as a whole. While many of these subtleties may go unnoticed they add a personal touch. There is a feeling and a sense that this is not just a movie but that real people are impacted by the events that occur as the result of this operation. The loss of the warriors lost in Operation Redwing touch not only the friends and family of those operations but the nation. It shows that morals and ethics matter and doing what is right is not always easy. Choices have consequences. If these warriors had made a different choice this would be a completely different movie.
If you are looking for the movie to completely follow the book you won’t find it. If you are looking for the movie to leave out the Hollywood factor you won’t find it. What the movie does is a phenomenal job in its ability to show ordinary men who do extraordinary acts. Each of the men in Operation Redwing suffered severe injuries but stayed in the fight and not one time do you see an example of weakness or the feeling that this is too much for them. They are warriors with the best training in the world. Their mindset and actions do not know the words quit or defeat. This movie provides the opportunity to honor the lives of Mike Murphy, Danny Dietz, Matt Axelson, Marcus Luttrell, and all those lost on the Chinook. These men are the essence of character, courage, and commitment.

Fantastic movie

I thought this was an amazing film - full of energy and great performances. Specifically Leonardo DiCaprio. He is always a really amazing actor, but here he displays something I don't often see from him - humor. He is hysterical. The whole movie is really funny and moved at a great pace - I didn't feel the 3-hour length at all. Also, Jonah Hill - I think this is his best performance. He's fantastic too. If you like Scorcese, you won't be disappointed. This has the same kind of drama and humor you'd expect from him, but he's really at the top of his game with this film. I will be buying this as soon as it's available.

Inspiring movie for all ages

Nothing could have prepared me for Catching Fire; it was, quite simply, an astonishment on every level. It is so much more than just an action movie; it is also a thought-provoking look at hope, revolution, rebellion, and the importance of government. It's themes encompass grand ideas and touchy subjects with utter fearlessness.
Let us examine what sets The Hunger Games: Catching Fire a cut above the rest:
1. CAST: Surrounding the amazing Jennifer Lawrence (who has matured into a riveting young actress) is a supporting cast to die for. Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth give good roles, but it is the incomparable Donald Sutherland, who oozes quiet menace from every pore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who chews the scenery with a subtle performance, and the amazing Jeffrey Wright who truly astonish. Look also for Jena Malone as Johanna Mason in a brilliant, scene-stealing performance of incredible charisma.
2. CINEMATOGRAPHY: Filled with gorgeous and eye-catching shots, Joe Willems's cinematography fills Panem with striking, practical, gritty, but never dour visuals. From the browns and greys of District 12 to the lush, green, cramped hell of the arena, Catching Fire is one of the best photographed films of the year.
3. COSTUMES AND SET DESIGN: Catching Fire offers, courtesy of small genius Trish Summerville, some of the most luscious, gorgeous, and eye-catching dresses this side of Lord of the Rings. Look for the marked contrast between the grit and the ash of District 12 with the gleam and color of the Capitol. THG's realistic set design and costuming brings a whole new field of "real" to the game.
4. ACTION: The perfect blend of psychological build-up and riveting action, the last hour of Catching Fire is an absolute powerhouse of action. Prepare to be glued to the edge of your seat as poisonous fog, lightning, monkeys, psychological torture, and floods beset our heroes. The stakes are raised, and the action is upped, but GONE is the shaky-cam that plagued the first film. Catching Fire has matured in every way.
5. THEMES: This is what astonished me the most; the subtle, devious, brilliantly convoluted game of cat-and-mouse ("moves and counter moves") played by President Snow, Plutarch Heavensbee, and Katniss Everdeen over the course of the film. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is a thought-provoking and stimulating look at fascism, revolution, revolt, and the dangerous side effects of hope. Bravo for the decision to insert such smart material into a film of this calibre.
On the whole, the cons of Catching Fire are few, and it's pros are many. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the blockbuster event of the year. 5 tributes out of 5.
