This may be my favorite Hard bop lp. One could easily dance to this album. Art Blakey plays drums and is a little more restrained than on his own albums. He, along with Paul Chambers on bass and Wynton Kelly on piano keeps this album bopping right along.Great sax from Mobley. I will definitely get more Hank Mobley
I was a little disappointed when I received this vinyl. I did not realize that it was a picture disc. It looked great but I have heard that picture discs had poor sound quality. I was blown away by the sound quality, so clear and crisp. The original engineering must have been amazingly good. I would highly recommend this lp/cd. The song selections are quite varied and very interesting (many different styles). If you like Zappa then you would really like this one.
This a piano less quartet (although Ike switches to piano on a couple of songs and then back to sax). Grant Green's guitar is the perfect substitution for piano. This lp has maybe more ballads than the average hard bop record but this is where Ike's smooth playing excels. Imagine that instead of a smooth crooner you have Ike's beautiful sax. Highly recommended...put on late night with a glass of wine.
