`The truth is out there,' and FBI agents Scully and Mulder seek it in this sci-fi phenomenon about their quest to explain the seemingly unexplainable. Their strange cases include UFO sightings, alien abductions and just about anything else paranormal. This release collects every episode from all nine seasons of The X-Files.

Being the progenitor of many sci-fi TV shows that became global trends in recent years, the most legendary television programme of the '90s, THE X-FILES, is finally making its blu-ray appearance, after years in the process of remastering from the original 35mm negatives, presented in 16:9 widescreen format, and including new DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks. All 202 episodes are featured, with more than 23 hours of special content across all 9 seasons, and including bonus features from the previous DVD releases, such as audio commentaries, deleted scenes and featurettes. For the first time, we have the chance to own a piece of television history in superior quality, in the fasion of the glorious "TWIN PEAKS: The entire mystery" set from last year that was also finally presented in HD and in its entirety. Having created a huge buzz months before its release, here is the complete and official details, for those who wish to know exactly what the box includes, and also what it looks like.
Packaging: The box contains 9 cases, 1 for each season, and leaves a space reserved for the upcoming mini-series set (due to be released next year), all housed in a glossy, sturdy slide-off box set. All seasons are 6-disc sets (except for Season 2 which, being the longest, is spread over 7 discs), presented in double, not regular-sized, clear blue amaray cases. Each season contains all the episodes and special features from the individual seasons, which are now also available individually on blu-ray. No guides or booklets are included in the box, the only info available is an episode list and a special features list on the inside of each case. The discs of each season have different artwork on them. (Australian release features an additional 2 blu-ray discs for the feature films "Fight the future" and "I want to believe"; Japanese box, also, includes the 2 films, plus, a poster, a set of cards with commissioned artwork, and an episode guide).
Picture/Audio: The entire show was originally broadcast in standard definition. As the series was launched after the early widescreen TV boom of the early '90s, it was filmed with widescreen in mind. The first 4 seasons were produced in 4:3 format. The series then went to a 16:9 widescreen format for the remainder of its run, as anamorphic widescreen displays were starting to become common. Thus, it now appears as originally intended, which is rather amazing to watch after 2+ decades (only the pilot was shot somewhat differently, and so the result is some unavoidable cropping in order to get it looking right; but that is a minor gripe that only eagle-eyed viewers will notice). The sharpness is astounding, it's even more impressive than some HD footage I'd seen on German TV a couple of years ago. The audio is equally impressive, crisp and clear. The extra features are presented in HD as well, indicative of the effort made to present a pristine package altogether.
To those interested in buying this, this will be of interest: I bought the UK box set for €140 (about $150). Amazon.com's $270 price is ridiculous, but amazon.uk's £100 plus p&p is one of the best deals at the moment. Both UK and US boxes feature the exact same material, which is exactly what one will get when purchasing all seasons individually (but why not have the complete thing when you can buy it at a good price?). If I could recommend one of the 2 sets, I would go for the UK box, because the packaging is better-looking (thicker outer-box, and all 9 cases are double ones - US box has 8 normal ones + 1 double for Season 2). The notes I have included about the picture and audio quality and the remastering are based on selective viewing. Obviously it will take a while to watch everything on here, but I will make an update if I encounter anything worth sharing. Let's all rejoice, this is super exciting, I'm sure most avid fans of the show can share my enthusiasm! The truth is - finally - out there!

Horror fans wishes are granted with the sequel Wishmaster: The Prophecy Fulfilled. Artisan has done a fine job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. While there are some inherent flaws in the image due to the film's low-budget production (including a slight amount of softness and edge enhancement), overall the colors are solid and black levels bright. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English. This is a fairly bombastic track that features a few well placed directional effects and surround sounds. Though the track isn't going to blow away anyone's surround sound system, the bulk of this mix is clear of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are optional Spanish subtitles and a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround soundtrack in English. Artisan has decided to include a few extra features on this disc, starting with two commentary tracks: one by director Chris Angel and actors Michael Trucco and Jason Thompson, and a second by Angel and actor John Novak. Both of these tracks are informative and funny, especially the second track which includes a very chatty Novak. "Wishmaster Piece Theater: An Inside Look at the Film" sports some behind-the-scenes footage with the cast and crew while "The Djinn's Guide to Dating: A Question and Answer Session" features the demonic Djinn answering some probing questions about his sex life. Finally there are a few selected storyboards, and a theatrical trailer for the film.

The Wishmaster set of movies are, or should be, classic horror movies. They're a little campy for modern times, but still very good movies. Made during the "Freddie Kruger" and "Jason" times they should be in any horror collection from that period.

Chris Angel's Wishmaster 3: Beyond the Gates of Hell comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that produces an image with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials include a commentary track with the director and the cast, behind-the-scenes footage, filmographies of the cast and crew, and production notes. Horror enthusiasts and fans of the Wishmaster series will greatly enjoy this disc, but there is little here for anyone else.

I must say that the wishmaster films rank right up with the: halloween, friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street series. the storyline was fantastic for this film, and the directing and production was superb. The most beautiful and hot A.J. Cook played Diana, and her boyfriend Greg played by Tobias Mehler. the chemistry was just right between the two, and i could not take my eyes off diana... what a great figure she has. While watching this film the viewer is constantly thinking about the wishes that the wishmaster gives to those unfortunate souls. The special effects were awesome and the pace of the film goes very smoothly. The wishmaster character was super evil and quite scary. There is excitement every minute of the film and some very scary scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat. Was hoping that there would have been more intimate scenes between diana and greg that would have spiced the film up a little. i plan on adding this film to my collection, and think that this movie would be liked by young couples watching tv at home. Hope that if there is a part four wishmaster film made the same actors and actresses star in it... A.J. Cook is such a talented and attractive actress.

Visually stunning but devoid of human emotion

"The last word always belongs to the mountain". It's interesting that Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur has taken the helm for the 3D mountain-climbing spectacle, Everest. Just a few years ago he tackled another man vs. Mother Nature survival tale, The Deep, depicting a true triumph of the human spirit over the elements. Things aren't quite so rosy in Everest, though; a film of literally high adventure, superhuman exploits, and devastating loss. In depicting the sheer danger of the moment, the awe-inspiring majesty of the mountain itself, the film is beyond reproach, but its characterization of the men and women who risked all is slippery as Everest's icy face.
Based on the tragic true events depicted in author Jon Krakauer's book, Into Thin Air (although other material was used as well), the film centers on multiple 1996 expeditions to scale Everest's summit. Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) is the man who helped turn such expeditions into a profitable business, and those corporate concerns clash mightily with the brutal reality of Mother Nature when she's all worked up. Through brisk introductory setup we meet Rob's pregnant wife (Keira Knightley), left behind to worry while he takes on one more climb. There's also 100% Texan Beck Weathers (played by 100% Californian Josh Brolin); everyman Doug Hansen (John Hawkes), who has tried to reach the summit twice and failed; Yasuko Namba (Naoko Mori), a woman who has reached 6 of the world's 7 summits; and Krakauer himself (Michael Kelly), documenting the journey. There are also a trio of ladies, played by the incredibly talented Emily Watson, Robin Wright, and Elizabeth Debicki, who are left behind to man the fort or just to worry. They don't get a lot to do but are essential for drawing an emotional connection, because there aren't many opportunities for that once the expedition actually begins.
The mountain is, obviously, treacherous in just about every respect. The weather conditions are unpredictable, every movement or errant sound could trigger a landslide, and there are any number of ways a person can die attempting something like this. "Human beings simply aren’t built to function at the cruising altitude of a 747", Rob informs the already-experienced team, all customers who paid a hefty sum to reach the peak. But the real conflict, at least initially, isn't with the mountain, it's with rival climbers leading similar expeditions. Long-haired hippie Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) is leading one, while other groups make for a crowded field. Tension mounts as climbers are forced to wait in sub-zero temperatures while others go ahead of them, creating a potentially lethal scenario. Not everyone has the experience, the concern, or the temperament Rob has, either. If there's an undertone explored by screenwriters Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and William Nicholson (Unbroken) it's that Everest has been shamelessly exploited as just another commercial product. In a way, it undercuts the "Because it's there" gung-ho mentality of those who dare climb the mountain. You can now buy an expedition to the top of Mt. Everest like you buy a trip to Hawaii. Conversely, those in charge feel obligated to get you to the summit because you are a paying customer who could give them bad press. There's danger in that kind of compromise, one that Everest should have dug into further.
But that would take away from the IMAX 3D escapade at hand, and this is a film that the format was designed for. It's literally breath-taking to follow the aerial ascent, reaching heights up to 29000 feet where every gasp for air could be the last. It's true that the mountain itself gets a far better treatment than the human characters as Kormakur and DP Salvatore Totino impressively capture every jagged foot.
However, through all the thick fog and snow the human drama gets buried, exacerbated by the inability to tell who is who underneath all that massive gear. Basically, most of the climbers make the summit, but a severe storm strikes soon after, rendering the journey home nearly impossible. Everybody isn't going to make it back, and the deaths start piling up quickly...perhaps too quickly. In an effort to be as authentic as possible, the tragedy is shown with as little theatrics as possible. It may be honest, it may be how things actually went down, but it makes for a low-key, downbeat survival thriller when all is said and done. There's also a great deal of confusion about the specifics of what actually doomed the climbers, so much so that it may be wise to check the Wikipedia entry, or Krakauer's book, to figure out what really happened. That's not to say the performance during these scenes were bad, though. While this all-star cast don't get enough to build fully formed characters around, individually Clarke, Gyllenhaal, Brolin, Hawkes, and Kelly are great. It's just disappointing to not get more of a sense into who these people were, especially Namba as the one woman in the group attempting a record-breaking feat.
Ultimately, Everest succeeds in capturing the experience, putting you right there thousands of feet in the air where no man was meant to go. But like the air at that incredible height, the film is pretty thin and never strives to be about anything in particular. There's no triumph of the human spirit here, just endless tragedy.

I'm glad to have the next DVD set in the series...aaaand now I'm caught up. After growing up with the original series, I'm quite impressed with this one. They do shout-outs to the original series and there are so many references to things that adults (who were kids in the 80s/90s) would catch. I've also collected most of the figures and accessories (I still have my collection of figures/accessories from back when). Definitely looking forward to rest of the series.

The Green Inferno revolves around Justine, a college student who joins a group of activists who plan on helping a forest in the Amazon from being destroyed. However, their plane crashes and the activists are eventually kidnapped by a cannibalistic tribe and must do everything they can do to get rescued before they are eaten. The movie is directed by Eli Roth, who has directed a few good horror movies like Cabin Fever and Hostel, and his wife Lorenza Izzo plays Justine in this movie. The movie wasn't as good as I was hoping it would but it wasn't terrible either. The movie has it's fair share of suspense and some unrelentingly gruesome deaths that most definitely adds to the horror tone of the movie. One of the biggest flaws with the movie is some of the characters being a little bland and boring to a certain extent. In the end, The Green Inferno is not one of Eli Roth's best movies but it does show that he can work well with the horror genre. If you like some of Eli Roth's movies, you'll probably enjoy this movie.

The Return to Form of M. Night Shyamalan

In THE VISIT, Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and her younger brother, Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) set out on a week-long trip to spend and visit with their mother’s parents. Their mom (Kathryn Hahn) left home as a teenager after horrible fight and has never spoken to them since then. Through the miracle of the Internet, her parents have located their long-estranged daughter and have begged to spend a week with their grandchildren while they still can. Becca and Tyler’s father abandoned his wife and children and moved out to California with a younger woman and Becca’s mom has really been stressing out lately. She and Tyler convince their Mom it will be a great idea. Also, while the kids are gone, they are sending Mom on a cruise with her boyfriend for some needed rest and relaxation (none of them have been away from each other since dad left). In the meantime, Becca is a budding filmmaker and decides to make a documentary of the whole experience, in the hopes that it can bring some much needed catharsis and closure to her mother.
So, the kids board a train and set out to meet Pop Pop (Grandpa played by Peter McRobbie) and Nana (Grandma played by Deanna Dunagan). The couple live away from town in the country, foreshadowing the sense of eeriness and foreboding that will occur. At first things are fine. Nana loves to bake, Pop Pop is funny, and both grandparents are so pleased to see their grandchildren. However, that night after bed time, things start to get spooky. When morning comes, it’s as though nothing happens. But the kids know something just isn’t quite right and the strange things that happened on the first night of their visit quickly escalate.
I really enjoyed THE VISIT. I found it an entertaining romp of good fun. There were parts that I found really, really funny. There were other parts that scared me. There was even one scene in the movie that completely grossed me out. I enjoyed the variety in tone of the movie, but I know some people won’t. The movie has some great acting. There’s a major twist in the movie, but neither me or none of the people I was with figured it out. Also, Kathryn Hahn plays the mom and I really like her as an actress.
The film is being marketed as a “found footage” movie, but it’s really not that. Instead, it’s actually a faux documentary (not a mockumentary). Found footage movies are just that: they are supposed to be pieces of film footage that were “found” after some horrifying event. Mockumentaries are faux documentaries that mock the documentary format (thing anything by Christopher Guest). THE VISIT isn’t either one of those. It’s a fictional movie, but one that if filmed and edited together as a real documentary. Although the subject matter is different, THE VISIT most reminded me of a small little movie I saw several years ago entitled AMERICAN ZOMBIE. I liked that movie and I liked THE VISIT.
With that said, one really can’t talk about THE VISIT without talking about the director, M. Night Shyamalan. Fifteen years ago, Shyamalan was one of the biggest director/writer/producers in Hollywood. Things started going downhill in his career with THE VILLAGE and until now have just gotten worse. I actually liked THE VILLAGE, but didn’t think it was as strong as other Shyamalan movies. I also love LADY IN THE WATER. However, I hated THE HAPPENING and have yet to see THE LAST AIRBENDER or AFTER EARTH, although I’ve heard they are both awful. Although the past few years have been rough for Shyamalan, THE VISIT is a movie that shows he still has it. I believe years from now it will be the film that is pointed to as the turn around for his career. Hopefully, he will be able to build upon the success of this feature and continue making the great movies he used to make.

A Slow Building Knock Out
on March 28, 2016

Denis Villeneuve burst onto the scene in 2013 with his chilling American directorial debut “Prisoners”, and later cemented himself as a director-to-watch with last year’s “Enemy”. Both films are excellent, and treat the audience as the smart moviegoers they are, letting them freely infer and fill in the blanks when it comes to things that aren’t fully spelled out. So it should come as no surprise that his latest effort “Sicario” succeeds in much the same way. This time he’s teaming up with the likes of Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro, who prove to be a fascinating trio in this slow-building thriller.
The film follows Kate Macer (Blunt), an FBI agent eager to make a difference after several members of her team are killed while searching a home containing evidence linked to a prominent Mexican drug cartel. She volunteers to help search for the men responsible as part of a special task force led by supposed Defense Department contractor Matt Graver and his mysterious partner Alejandro Gillick (Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro). But things begin to get messy and many of Kate’s preconceptions are shattered quickly. We trail her on this spellbinding journey of moral ambiguity and blatant violence, and her perspective is what makes the majority of it so surprising.
The thing that struck me immediately about the picture was the astonishing cinematography, which was beautifully done by the legendary Roger Deakins (most known for his work on films like “Fargo” and “No Country for Old Men”). When paired with the superb acting from each and every cast member, you get a knockout of a movie. Emily Blunt is the true stand out here, and seeing her lead the film after so many great supporting roles is extremely satisfying. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite films of the year so far, and continues to grow on me the more I think about it.

Lucas Vaughn' (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) works at the 'Swan Casino' owned by Mafia-Boss 'Francis ''Pope' Silva' (Robert De Niro)
'Luke's' young daughter is hospitalised, seriously ill and in need of expensive treatment, trouble is, 'Luke' has been unable to
keep up the Medical-Insurance payments, she may not be treated if he can't meet the costs.
Fellow employee 'Cox' (Dave Bautista) has plans to rob his employer but needs the knowledge that 'Luke' who has worked there
for many years has, 'Luke' initially is reluctant to take part despite his desperate needs.
He decides to approach his old friend and indeed employer for a loan to cover hospital-fee's but is told.....'no favours'
'Luke' agree's to take part in the Heist, but has his own ideas on how they should go about it......things seem to go to plan, however
security are alerted before they have time to get away, after an exchange of gunfire, they make a break for it, however, spooked by
the sound of gunfire their getaway driver takes off.
Being pursued by Casino-Security they hi-jack a bus, they now have hostages to bargain with....they are almost immediately pursued
by the police, 'Cox' is a loose-cannon and is perfectly willing to demonstrate that he will kill in order to escape whilst 'Luke' try's to
keep the passengers safe, he doesn't want a killing-spree, he'd only agreed to be a part of the robbery to save his daughter,
The bus is pursued by both the 'law' and 'Pope's' henchmen....'Pope' needs the money back, it's not just Casino-Money, its also 'Mob'
money which is laundered at the Casino.
'Luke' strikes up an understanding with one of the pursuing cops 'Kris' (Gina Carano) who has realized that 'Luke' is a steadying influence on-board the bus and wishes it's passengers no harm.
It becomes a tense affair as options become fewer for the robbers....can they avoid being either captured by the police or indeed being killed by 'Pope's' henchmen.
Well worth a spin, a cut above the average movie of this type....tense at times with some action/ fire-fight sequences......whether you buy
or indeed catch it on a movie-channel - it is worth a viewing
