Inspired by real life events, Orange is the New Black stars Taylor Shilling as Piper Chapman, a woman in her mid-thirties who is convicted and incarcerated for a decade-old crime. The unlikely prisoner is a standout at the correctional facility and earns several enemies as a result -- as well as a unique group of friends, including her former girlfriend (Laura Prepon).

Unearths all the feelings

An adaptation of the incredible ordeal suffered by the Chilean miners in 2010 was so desired by Hollywood that a film was in the works before they were even out of the ground. It adds a slightly oily touch to Patricia Riggen's inspiring if broadly predictable human drama, The 33, a film which is bolstered by the direction of Patricia Riggen, whose Under the Same Moon proved she knows how to reach audience's hearts.
Based on Hector Tobar's book, Deep Down Dark, what audiences are treated to is a two-hour look at the 69 terrible days those mine workers endured after the San Jose Mine collapsed with them in it. Their story is one that made Chile more news-worthy than it's been in years, but also captured the attention of the entire world. Riggen's biggest hurdle isn't overcoming that everyone already knows how the story ends; it's overcoming a largely homogenized screenplay that rarely endeavors to go beyond being just another survival drama with all the familiar Hollywood checkpoints.
As such, this probably isn't the most accurate retelling of events, but the one that could get made with just the right number of recognizable stars, wherever they may be from. Antonio Banderas plays "Super" Mario Sepulveda, who became an international superstar as the public face of the trapped miners. He's a bold, boisterous guy and a natural leader, while Lucho (Lou Diamond Phillips) is a mine supervisor but too passive to take charge. It's Lucho who leads the men into that death trap after voicing concerns with upper management about the mine's safety, but of course he's ignored because the owner doesn't want to spend the money. Most of the men are given fleeting glimpses of personality; one is an Elvis enthusiast, one has a baby on the way and has dreams of a better life, one has a mistress, and still another is due to retire in a few days. Want to know a good way to spoil a retirement party? Getting trapped 2,000 feet underground.
There's both too much and too little ground for Riggen and the screenwriters to cover. What's going on below ground mostly amounts to the men trying to ration what little food they have, until personality conflicts inevitably begin to flare up. Riggen finds moments of levity in their tragedy, especially in one great scene in which their culinary fantasies are dreamily visualized. As the men fight to survive, the more interesting tale is being spun up above as the women in their lives struggle to keep the faith. Setting aside her French accent and trying on a Chilean one is Juliette Binoche as Maria, an eccentric who sells empanadas on the street and battles with the government (led by Rodrigo Santoro as the Minister of Mining) to get the proper drilling tools to rescue her trapped brother. Kate Del Castillo, Cote de Pablo, and a number of other Hispanic actresses bring soulfulness to what are largely under-written characters. Rather than being a story about the pain they are going through as their loved ones are buried underground; it's about the bonds these women form to help bolster one another through this nightmare.
While Binoche handles herself pretty well, some of the other casting choices are just plain weird and comically distracting. Bob Gunton couldn't be less Chilean if he tried, so seeing him as President Pinera is flat-out absurd. A real momentum killer is a protracted but important subplot involving drill bits. In fact, drill bits and finding the right drill bits is a pretty big chunk of the film, which is about as exciting as it sounds. Those lulls aside, Riggen achieves everything she intends to on an emotional level. There won't be a dry eye in the house by the time it's done, and she consistently finds way to inspirit the audience. It's a terrific story, one that epitomizes the best in all of us. What The 33 isn't is especially memorable. It does what it sets out to do, which is turn a horrible tragedy into feel-good fodder.

Strange but Good

I was entertained all the way through. You can't really ask much more of a movie. If you enjoyed the Ken Burn's documentary series, "The West" then this movie may be worth a watch. Tommy Lee Jones capably directs and shines a unique light on the pioneer life of the 1850's. What makes this movie unique is that it shows the hardships that women had to endure in a very unflinching way that is not seen often in westerns. It doesn't do it in a boring or preachy way which is why I enjoyed it. I don't want to spoil anything but I will say that this movie goes to some dark and gritty places that I was not expecting and then shows the resulting debilitating psychosis that is the inevitability of such a harsh life.

Better than the first movie

I actually loved the first movie but I understand why some didn't - it was too compartmentalized. In the first, everything takes place in one home for the most part and while I found it to be an excellent idea and even execution, many did not.
With the sequel, things are much more vast and we get to meet many people - victims as well as "purgers."
It's rare that a sequel is better than the first but in this case, that is exactly what happens. There's more insight into the people doing the purging as well as the victims you meet along the way and the action is almost non-stop. Are there plot holes? Of course there are! However, they aren't so apparent that it ruins the movie. You can ask questions all night such as why people would be out a few hours before the Purge starts or what happens to the hospitals during this time but that only takes away from what is an enjoyable ride.
I loved it so much that I do hope there is a third installment coming but not too many that they ruin the whole franchise. However, look at the Final Destination movies - they can come up with different scenarios each time and it works; I think it'll work in this one too.

Watching The Purge makes you a dirty participant

Family man who makes a living selling home security finds himself a victim of his own success in a yearly free for all called The Purge. It's a horrid, bloodthirsty movie, more real than Night of the Living Dead without the zombies. I found it shocking in that i couldn't turn it off making myself too a participant in the wanton killing. Strangely the younger children in the family and the trapped homeless stranger were the ones to show sense and compassion. By the movie's end I felt dirty just for watching it.

If you like Johnny Depp then this is a must see. As with a lot of his movies, his makeup and acting skills make you completely forget it's him in a very short time. You can always tell how much he researches a character by his performance. Once agian a great job by Depp.

Minnie Mouse is on her way to singing stardom, and her pals Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto are happy to be her backup band. But when the gang realizes their musical instruments are missing, they've got to use problem-solving and the right Mouseketools to make sure the show will go on. Includes the bonus episodes "Mickey's Big Band Concert," Minnie's Bow-Toons," "Rooftop Repair" and "Alarm Clocked Out".

Great and Perfect addition to my Disney Collection

Based on the Grimms Bros fairy tale, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" remains the greatest film achievement in animation history. Filmed between 1934-1937, "Snow White" was the first full length colour animated feature told as a dramatic fairy tale. 79 years later, it still impresses viewers with its technical brilliance as well as with its emotional power. Presented in its original 4:3 aspect ratio, the film made its HD entry on blu-ray with 1080p HD picture quality and 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio on 2009's Diamond edition. The Disney company did a spectacular job at remastering the video and audio tapes for that edition (which remains the definitive one), and that same transfer is used on this new edition, which further presents for the first time the film in HD digital version. The quality of the image and sound is superb, the clarity and fullness that has been achieved is astounding. The film is available to play with "DisneyView" which essentially replaces the black bars that vertically appear on either side of the 1.78:1 frame, necessary to preserve the film's original aspect ratio, with artwork from the hand of Artist Toby Bluth (this feature was also available on the Diamond release). A crowning achievement that deserves a place in every home library, this is probably the best family film ever to deal with the foundation for growing up, in mythical terms at least. Most may have seen this movie as children, but I think only when watching it again as adults becomes obvious why this film is held in such reverence. It is much more than a movie, it is art at the highest level, and like all great art, its magic is timeless. Here is the list of the contents of the brand new 2016 Signature edition, filled with exclusive bonus features, another precious addition to a film collection, one to cherish forever.
