Can I give this more than five stars?

I can't remember where I first read about Fullbright a couple of months ago, but I want to find whoever wrote that article and thank them profusely for introducing me to my favorite new songwriter of the past few years. Recommended for people who like the kind of song craft that folks like Jackson Browne and Dawes specialize in, not to mention lesser-knowns (but equally awesome writers) like Mary Gauthier and Robert Ellis. If I'd listened to this last year when it came out, it would have been my favorite CD of 2014 hands down. I also picked up his debut from 2012 when I got this one but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet because I can't stop listening to this one!

A pleasant surprise

I didn't expect much from this CD. Top 40 music usually sounds disposable to me, which leaves me cold. But I sampled it via iTunes and was drawn in by the classic doo-wop vocal stylings and the catchy hooks. The lyrics are pretty fun, too. A couple of my favorites were only on the deluxe version, so I had to pick that one up instead of the regular version. I'm not sure if I'm All About That Bass, but I'm definitely all about Meghan Trainor.

An Unlikely Delight

I've been reading Marvel's comics for over 30 years now, and picked up on Guardians of the Galaxy when it was relaunched a decade or so ago as a contemporary cosmic comic (as opposed to the original, which was set in the far-flung future). And although I've found the comic to be entertainingly offbeat, I scoffed when I heard the announcement that it would be adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I should have known better than to doubt. This is one of the tightest and most entertaining entries in the MCU - up there with the first Iron Man and Avengers movies in terms of self-contained story, entertainment value, and openness to folks who haven't been steeped deeply in the comics. I'm happy to own this on shiny discs and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Solid Live Album From a Band You've Forgotten
on November 22, 2014

Sister Hazel made a big splash with "All For You" back in the mid-90s and had a couple of other radio hits before falling off most people's radar. But they've never stopped performing and releasing new CDs. Their latest is a 2-CD live collection of 20 songs taken from 20 different shows, released at a bargain price. The hits are here, as are some deeper album tracks, all played with high spirits. They pull off the vocal harmonies that are a big part of their sound, and they avoid falling too deeply into the ultra-long jams that are often the downfall of similar bands. Stretch it out, but not past the limit. This probably won't convert any new fans for them, and it's not going to surprise any current fans (aside from the whole "Oh, they're still around?" thing), but it's a solid addition to their catalog.

Tribute to Legendary Songwriter and Bluesman

You've probably never heard of Chris Smither, but you should have. He's a songwriter and a mostly acoustic blues guitarist who has a knack for writing a hook, humorous and otherwise. This collection is a solid entry point for his songs, as about 20 of his peers, friends and "students" take on highlights from his catalog and put their own spin on them. You may not recognize most of those names either - again, you should - but that really doesn't matter. These are terrific performances and reinterpretations of songs that deserve to be more widely heard. Check out "No Love Today" and "Killing the Blues" for an introduction to a couple of different sides of his songwriting. Then dig deep into his catalog because there's not a bad album in the bunch.

Another Solid Album
on November 22, 2014

Scars on 45 make anthemic, mostly acoustic music, with shared male and female lead and harmony vocals. It's poppy enough to fit well as the background music played under the emotional montage at the end of your favorite TV show, yet interesting enough sonically and lyrically to hold up to more direct scrutiny. I heard them on a late night talk show a few years back and picked up their previous CD based on that performance. I really enjoyed that one, and Safety In Numbers fits perfectly alongside it. If I had a criticism it would be that it's a bit too perfect a fit - as if Safety In Numbers was a bit of a motto. Would love to hear them play it a bit less safe next time around and take a few more risks, but as long as they continue to put out solid, memorable efforts like this, I'll be listening.

Solid Debut Effort

I read about Hozier in my local college newspaper because where else are you going to find out about under the radar new artists who don't follow the rules of image over talent that make the mainstream media take notice? Hozier is a little bit bluesy, a little bit folky, and a bit of a rocker. He'll appeal to folks who like the more rhythmic recent Iron & Wine releases, to people who want to enjoy Bon Iver but find him too floaty, to people who remember Cat Stevens before he was Yusuf, and to people who have gotten into the recent upsurge of upbeat acoustic bands like Mumford and Sons and the Avett Brothers. I'm looking forward to seeing where he goes next.

Another Stunner From the Barr Brothers
on November 22, 2014

I caught the Barr Brothers in concert as an opening act a few years back and was spell-bound by the aural tapestry they wove. Beautiful, sometimes almost to the point of being fragile, yet never wimpy. Two hallmarks of their sound - an acoustic guitar bowed by a piece of wire to eerie effect and washes of vocal harmony - intrigued and excited me, and their debut CD lived up to the live show. Happily, this new CD brings everything that I loved about the first and adds more propulsion and more experimentation to the mix. Make no mistake, these are songs first with plenty of hummable hooks, but the Barr Brothers aren't satisfied with just recreating what's been created before. If you're looking to branch out from the mainstream but want to keep a foot in the familiar, check this CD out.

Something Different From Members of Jellyfish
on November 22, 2014

This is a good CD judged on its own merits, but not what I was expecting from a couple of the songwriters who made Jellyfish such a paragon of power-pop. Think fewer hooks and harmonies, more electronic and dance-oriented leanings. It's nice to have a wide-release of this mostly lost project, and some bonus tracks, too. This label, Omnivore, has really been knocking it out of the park with their high quality, carefully assembled releases, and this is no exception. I'll follow the guys from Jellyfish to any musical project that they put together, and while I may not have enjoyed this one as much as I'd hoped, it's a welcome addition to my library.
