I wrote a longer review of the Blu-Ray and don't want to repeat myself, so I'll keep this one short and sweet: you won't see a better movie, or hear a better soundtrack, this year than "Sing Street." Director John Carney, his (mostly) young cast, and his songwriting partners have created the sort of movie that Hollywood has forgotten it ever knew how to make. That's ok; I'll just keep watching this one over and over again.

I can't recommend this one highly enough. I've been buying copies to give to friends and family. It's an Irish indie that only got a limited release in the U.S. but deserved a wide release and big promotional push. The quick-pitch summary is Conor, an Irish teen in the mid-80s, forms a band to impress a girl, but it's so much more than that. It's got the heart of a classic John Hughes movie. And the soundtrack, a mixture of songs from the era (The Cure, Hall and Oates, Motorhead, et al.) and spot-on originals co-written by director John Carney and Gary Clark (the songwriter behind 80s/90s power pop hit-makers Danny Wilson), is perfect. You'll want to own it on vinyl. "Rock and Roll is a risk," says Conor's brother partway through. Watching Sing Street? No risk at all. It's the best movie you'll see this year.

Take one of our best songwriters, who also possesses one of its least mellifluous voices, and have him add his vocals over the top of fairly standard arrangements of well-worn standards. It's a risky idea (and the second release in a row for which he's done it) that somehow doesn't feel dangerous at all in execution. Not as bad as it could have been, but not really as interesting as it could have been either.

I've been following these guys since they first formed at Indiana University - Bloomington (where I was attending graduate school) back in the mid-90s. That's several years before they hit bit with the viral video of their version of 12 Days of Christmas. I loved them then because they were doing what I'd done in college (I was in an all-male group at a small liberal arts college as an undergrad and still sing with them from time to time). This CD is reminiscent of the styles and arrangements they were doing back then. Which isn't a bad thing at all, but if you're expecting the kind of dynamic vocal interplay that The Sing-Off has popularized (as epitomized by the success of Pentatonix), you might be a bit disappointed. This is classic, old-fashioned a cappella. And while a few of the arrangements could use the sort of polish that a Deke Sharon, Ben Bram or Robbie Dietz might bring to them, there's nothing wrong with classic, old-fashioned a cappella at all.

This is Jesse Malin's second full length CD this year, and he also released a couple of EPs as well as new music with his old band D Generation. And he saved the best for last. Amazingly, though it veers widely between styles, it sticks together nicely as a cohesive whole. He's continuing to grow as a songwriter, and the performances here are excellent. Loved it!

I don't know if "Waitress" is a real or fictional musical. All that I know is that the always reliably tuneful Sara Bareilles has outdone herself here, with melodies that melt in your mouth, delicious vocal harmonies, and a story that I'd love to see on stage if the opportunity ever arises. So many wonderful moments here. This is one of my favorite albums of 2015.

I've seen The World Is … live a few times and they tend to come across as loud and unruly, with so many instruments playing so many parts - and so many vocalists participating - that some songs almost devolve into chaos. And while I love that side of them, this CD embodies something completely different - emphasizing melodies, acoustic instrumentation, and a fair amount of order. This is by far the most pleasant sounding recording they've made thus far (their live show is a bit toned down, but still raucous, if the one I saw earlier this month is any indication). A great way to ease into a really top-notch underground band.

I picked this up, and the matching lightning-to-usb cable, to bring to a music festival and leave in a common backstage area - so semi-secure, but lots of people filtering in and out. It charged my iPhone 5 and other people's devices throughout the weekend, and nobody stole it. Job done. These are available at clearance prices now in many stores because Best Buy is rebranding their Dynex products.

This title contains every episode from the third season of the British sci-fi thriller series Orphan Black starring Tatiana Maslany as a woman who discovers there are numerous clones of her walking the Earth.

Orphan Black is probably my favorite TV series nowadays, and this third season only increased my love for it. Tatiana Maslany is the clear standout, playing several very different characters who sometimes masquerade as each other. It's uncanny how different each of them is physically and psychologically. I'm glad to be able to watch and re-watch the episodes to find nuances that I missed. Don't start here, though. It won't make much sense if you haven't seen the first two seasons.
