Great option for a niche market
on August 13, 2019

This is a simple cooking device without a lot of the odd settings that almost everything has these days.
This is a nice little mp3 player! Also, it is a very satisfying throw-back item to use with actually employing physical buttons.
If you have someone older who is more comfortable with physical buttons than a touch-screen, this is an excellent way to go in a fairly empty field of products. The set-up is easy to use, and you can pretty easily get audio onto the player just by connecting a micro-USB cord between it and your computer.
As for exercising with it, this is definitely where it excels. If you don’t want to carry your phone while running, you have a great option in this little device. I’ve dropped my phone while running before. Even with wired headphones (as would be required here), the momentum of the phone just pulls out the wire and the phone is barely slowed before hitting the pavement. With this light-weight player, I’ve actually bumped into something while working out (the only way I can imagine this coming off since the clip is just as big as the player), and the player was so light that it didn’t even pull off of the headphone wire. I was using headphones with a right-angled connection, so this may have helped, but still, I wouldn’t expect any real damage from the occasional drop.
As for the interface, it is very intuitive. You can also remove options from the menu if you know you won’t be using them. For example, there is a folder for podcasts. Since a podcast isn’t going to download directly to this, I knew I wouldn’t listen to them on here. Through the menu, I was able to remove that option from the menu so I don’t have to scroll past it repeatedly.
As a bonus (which really should be available on any phone), you also have a radio tuner in this little player. You should be good to go, even if you manage to listen to everything you can save on here.
All in all, I’d say this is a nice player. If you have any worries about dropping your phone while on a run, this is a great option. Or, if you have someone older in your life who isn’t comfortable with a touch-screen but still wants to listen to music (and buying a walk- or disc-man can be fairly expensive these days), this is an excellent option as well.

Achieve the deep-fried flavor you love, without all the oil and added calories. The Chefman TurboFry™ Air Fryer allows you to bake, fry and roast like a pro. This airfryer requires little to no oil, so there’s less of that fried oil smell lingering in the house and less fat that you’re consuming. It’s large 3.5-liter capacity and flat basket gives you the ability to cook enough for a hungry crowd all at once. Skip the microwave! Reheat soggy leftovers in the air fryer to return them to their original texture. Make better-for-you fries that are just as crispy and tasty, roast chicken thighs, or heat up leftovers for a quick and easy meal. The temperature control with 60-minute timer automatically shuts off once food is done, so you never have to worry about burning or drying out your food. Its space saving basket is removable and dishwasher safe for easy clean-up, so you’ll have more time to dream up your next air-fried meal!

Good if you're starting out...
on August 13, 2019

I’ve tried a few recipes from the included book, and they have all been straight-forward. Particularly the bacon and parmesan Brussel sprouts and the sweet potato fries.
If you haven’t used an air-fryer before, essentially it works as follows: whatever you’re cooking, you toss it in oil (they recommend olive, I used avocado) before putting it into the basket; set the temperature and timer; most likely you’ll pull the basket out and toss the food around mid-cooking; once the timer is done you just pour out whatever you’re cooking.
The recommendations in the recipes seemed fairly spot on, assuming you’ve pre-heated the air-fryer. The first thing that I cooked was the Brussel sprouts, and step 1 was cooking the bacon. The instructions said to cook for 6 minutes, but that the bacon would likely be done by 5 minutes. After the full 6 minutes, the ends of the bacon were crisp, but most of the rest was still fairly raw. Perhaps this would have been better with pre-heating.
Further, it is very easy to use for drier vegetables like the sprouts. With the sweet potatoes, you have to be careful to not overfill the basket. Whatever is standing on it’s own will be well cooked. If two of the fries are lying together, the air doesn’t get in between them and they will be largely un-fried (they’ll be hot, but won’t get the crisp outside).
I think this is useful if you’re cooking a lot of vegetables and don’t like to lay everything out for a toaster oven or regular oven (or if you just don’t want to heat up the full oven to cook a small amount of vegetables. Is this an absolutely necessary kitchen appliance? No. Does it have uses? Definitely. If you like the idea of the air-frying, go for it. If you’re living alone and only need to cook small portions, go for it. If you’re cooking for large groups, this won’t have the capacity to feed more than 2-3 people.

Nice, but better to go for the 1000s
on July 25, 2019
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
I’ve used Sony’s 700 and 1000 series before, and now the 900s, so let’s compare…
The 700 series didn’t have very good noise cancelling. My girlfriend would run the water in the sink, and I heard it like my head was in the sink. The 1000 series almost entirely eliminates the sound of the water. The 900 is in the middle, but closer to the 1000s. The noise-cancelling is good, but not quite as good as the 1000 series.
For the sound quality, I think all of the offerings from Sony have great sound. The only point that bothered me with these was their “extra bass” focus, which definitely adds bass, but it tends to sound superficial. It works well with electronic and pop music, but can sound odd when listening to easier acoustic music or podcasts. Otherwise, the sound quality is very nice. If you spend time digging through the EQ settings in the Sony app, you may be able to dial this in to your liking.
The feel of the headphones themselves is definitely a less premium experience than the 1000 series. Where the 1000s have smoother plastic, metal, and nicer leather, the 900s have rough plastic all over, no metal, and thin-feeling leather. This goes to the 1000s, hands down.
The controls on these headphones work just like all of the others from Sony. Swipe your finger across the cup to move forward, back, volume up, or volume down. Double-tap to play/pause/answer/hang-up. Great intuitive controls.
The app does add some functionality, but generally I just find it annoying. These headphones adjust noise-cancelling when you’re walking or sitting. Unfortunately, every time it switches, you get a chime in your hears. So, if you’re getting up and down from a desk with regularity, you’ll be getting these chimes all the time. It’s better to just turn off this functionality.
Overall, I’d say that these aren’t worth the relatively small difference in price when comparing to the 1000 series, which has been around for a few years now and can regularly be found on sale.

Good sound, poor design
on June 16, 2019
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
The sound from these headphones is really nice. I would say comparable to higher end sets from Sony or Bose. However, the audio quality is where the benefits really end.
I prefer an “over-the-ear” style to this “on-the-ear” style of headphone. These squeeze the head more than I am comfortable with, particularly with the glasses frames that I wear on a daily basis. Further, there is no padding on the head-band, making it uncomfortable for me to wear for any extended period of time. I do keep my hair short (about 1”), so perhaps this is better for those with longer hair.
The touch controls, while functional, are a bit difficult to use. They only put a raised line that you can feel on the power button, and a dot on the volume up. The other buttons are not only unmarked, but the same material as, and flush with, the rest of the ear cup. You just have to trust that once you’ve found the power button, you’ve moved your finger enough to hit the play/pause button. Further, given this lack of tactile feedback, I’ve found myself pressing on the edge of the charging port thinking that it was the power button before realizing my mistake.
Overall, the sound is great, but there are serious limitations to the design of these headphones.

The two devices can fall out of sync...
on May 26, 2019

This is a nice little transmitter! I’ve never used Bluetooth to connect a speaker/headphones to anything other than a phone or tablet, so this was a new experience. It was very easy. All you do is plug this transmitter in, push the pair button, and turn on whatever you want to pair to it. If you only have one connection to it, you can do it again to add a second speaker or pair of headphones.
In using this, I found that the speakers I connected fell out of sync regularly. If you want to set up speakers for a surround-sound effect, you may have difficulty. However, I cannot confirm if this was due to my specific speakers (different models may work differently).
For only $30, you can add Bluetooth to anything. Nice. Here are my thoughts in video form and hopefully you can hear what I mean with being “out of sync”: https://youtu.be/mJ_Qh2iZXg8

Transform any TV into a home entertainment center with the Denon DHT-S316. The low-visibility, wall-mountable sound bar features high-fidelity sound with two-way speakers and a wireless subwoofer. Denon Virtual Surround technology creates a powerful, realistic home theater experience through Dolby Digital, DTS Decoding and the Denon-proprietary Dialogue Enhancer for crystal clear dialogue at any volume. With a low-profile design and 2" height it fits most spaces and won’t block your TV’s bottom edge or IR remote sensor. Easily connect your TV to the HDMI (with Audio Return Channel) with the included HDMI cable. An Optical input allows for connecting an additional device. Wirelessly pair your Bluetooth capable devices to the Denon DHT-S316 and stream your favorite music easily.

Perhaps the best sound-bar I've tried
on April 30, 2019
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
I’ve tried a variety of sound-bar systems, and this is system is definitely worth the money. I currently use an upper-end Bose system which is no longer made/sold (from the Solo line, but a single large box to put a TV on top of). The sound quality of the Denon S316 is not quite on par with that, but it is a really good system for the money.
I have tried the newer Bose systems which are the same form factor as this Denon system, and I was not impressed with the sound. It seems that the sound-bar form limits the mid-range that these systems can produce, which results in an artificial-sounding bass-boost to dialogue, particularly with informative programs like the news. However, this system is something that I’d say is pretty comparable to the Bose sound-bar/subwoofer systems.
What this system has that the Bose sound-bars do not is an independent bass adjustment on the remote. This can address the odd bass-sound in newscaster voices. Additionally, the Denon system has different settings to not only adjust the audio for movies or music, but even voice clarification. I’ve seen this be very helpful for people who are a little hard-of-hearing or who have a hard time picking out dialogue over background music. The Denon has 3 levels for this, so you can set it to your needs so you can hear the dialogue without affecting the other sounds any more than necessary.
In total, I’d say this system is well worth the sale price of $300, and likely still worth it at the MSRP of $350. If you want better sound, you’ll likely have to go for a much larger system that isn’t just a sound-bar/subwoofer, which will take a lot more money, and even then you’ll likely not have as many simple-to-make audio adjustments.

Great speaker, but no real change from the XB31
on April 20, 2019

I made a video of my thoughts, which you can see here: https://youtu.be/tYpyhu5pd84
You can also just read below.
Overall, this is a great speaker for indoor use (which is how I generally use it). It definitely has the volume for use outdoors, but unfortunately my life is more sitting at a desk than sitting on the beach.
The sound quality from this little speaker is great. The extra bass really gives it a full sound, and this only gets better if you have a second Sony speaker to pair it with. When you have multiple speakers, the lights automatically switch to showing the full rainbow of colors and flashing strobe lights on either side.
These lights are really my only issue with the speaker. It can be annoying to have the flashing going constantly, and the colors constantly changing, having no real relation to the music playing. They say you can use their “Fiestable” app if you want to control the lights, but I don’t see the app doing anything at all. Individually, you do have more control over the colors and can select just cool colors or all warm colors, things of that nature.
My other issue with this speaker is that the only changes from the previous generation are aesthetic. This speaker has the textured speaker fabric over the front, and a matte grey plastic for the rest of the body. The previous speaker is entirely covered in fabric. This is the only change between the XB31 and the XB32. The sound, battery, inputs/outputs are all identical. If you can save money by getting the older model, do that.

Very sensitive antenna, in a good way
on March 30, 2019
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
I've tried a couple of antennae from Mohu in the past, and this is the most sensitive thus far. I have the bar, and I had to struggle with the placement to make sure that channels were coming in clearly. With this antenna, I just tossed it on top of a bookcase near the window, and every channel comes in clearly. Only one channel gets fuzzy when the blinds are closed.
I do live in an urban environment, so perhaps I'm closer to the signals than I would be elsewhere, but I have the antenna laid out flat 3 feet from a window without using the amplifier, and every channel comes in perfectly clearly.
For a video that includes my thoughts, you can look here: https://youtu.be/m0w5nSQs_o4
Definitely a great antenna for cord-cutters!

Nice if you're new to gluten-free, drawbacks
on January 26, 2019

This gluten sensor is a great way to start off if you are new to eating a gluten-free diet. If you are just learning what to look for in foods, this sensor will be very helpful for you.
I’ve been following a gluten-free diet for more than a decade, so this isn’t terribly useful since I know what to look for. There are a couple of points to keep in mind where this sensor doesn’t work perfectly. They specify that it doesn’t work for detecting gluten in fermented foods. This includes soy sauce. Unfortunately, that is the place where you can get in trouble at restaurants. If meats are marinated in soy or teriyaki sauces, they are not gluten-free, and this little sensor will not pick up on it.
When testing food, you get a reading in about 3.5 minutes. Other than the issue with soy sauce, it correctly identified gluten in the foods that I tested. I’ve put together a video with my thoughts here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHt7kp4sGmU

Great shave for an electric.
on January 8, 2019
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
This is a great electric shaver. It is the first that I’ve used in almost a decade, but they have definitely made progress in that time. All that I had tried previously ended up feeling hot and giving me a portent of razor burn to come. This shaver was comfortable under all conditions and I haven’t had any irritation since I started using it.
I tested this razer on sequential days, after letting my facial hair grow for up to 3 days, dry, wet, and with shaving cream. It did well under all conditions. I never had any straggler hairs which refused to be cut; I never had any irritation, razor burn, or ingrown hairs. It only takes a couple of minutes to shave, so the battery should last for weeks at a time.
I don’t think that the included trimmer attachment is really worth using on a regular basis, but it is nice to have in a pinch. It just doesn’t make the cleanest lines or get very close.
I have created a video review as well, which can be seen here: https://youtu.be/auKloJ4JOOE

This speaker pairs wtih BlueTooth, or has a standard size line in (1/8 inch, just like any headphone jack). So, if your TV has BlueTooth or a headphone-out jack, it can connect to a TV.

Each side has different controls (volume on left, play/pause on right).

You can connect the right side alone. This may be possible with the left, but I haven't tested it.
