Good 1st effort, but app holds it back
on December 14, 2017
Posted by: callmeageeth
from Louisville, KY
I always thought of Epson as a printing company. So I was a bit intrigued to find out they were making a running watch. I think the running watch looks good, some might not like it because it's plain and black but that's what I like about it. There's no color screen, which is unnecessary and it does not have a touchscreen (again, not necessary). I assume these latter omissions were to conserve battery life. My big gripe about the watch itself is the length of the nonreplaceable strap, it barely reaches around my wrist.
The buttons on the watch are pretty intuitive. I found it easy to figure out how to navigate the watch. There's a start/stop button, select button, and two other buttons (basically up/down to go through the menus). Again, getting around the watch was no issue, but the app on the other hand...
The app is what holds this phone back. Let me start from the beginning. I charge my watch completely, while it's charging I download the app and set up an account. Then I'm told to update the firmware, which could take UP TO AN HOUR. That long to update ANYTHING is unacceptable, particularly when it's brand new out of the box. Thankfully, it didn't take that long, but I had issues along the way. There's no progress bar for the update, so several times I thought the app was frozen (and one time I left the app to do something else on my phone). After a few hiccups, I decided to just sit my phone down next to the watch and let it update. Finally, after about a 30 minute process it was up to date. But then, the time and date wouldn't sync. I went to the menus on the app (and even the watch) and made sure it was supposed to sync with my phone. But it didn't. Finally I set the time to sync with GPS and that worked. Everytime you connect the watch to your phone, it takes a few minutes to sync. It seems like every menu you go to on your phone (while it's connected to the app) takes a minute to load which makes navigating the app frustrating. Luckily, I don't do it all that often. I run, the watch saves my data and I look at it every now and then.
The battery life is just OK. I turned off continuous HR and the GPS and it lasted two full days. BUT I only went on 2 runs (I used GPS during the runs). To me, this isn't "world class battery life" as advertised. It's not bad, but I expected more, especially given it's limitations as a "smartwatch". (BTW, I didn't expect it to be a smart watch, nor do I want it to be, I'm just saying the battery life should be better since it's not doing more complicated processes as a smart watch).
AS to the smart watch component, you can receive notifications from your phone on your watch, but they're limited. First, that means you have to stay connected to Bluetooth which means the battery drains faster, second when you get a text, you can't read it on your watch. It just says text message received (and it lists the sender). So you have your phone and watch vibrating when you get a notification. Without being able to read it on your watch, there's no point to using that functionality.
As a running watch this is a competent watch. The data is accurate and I've had no issues with using it as a running watch. The first time I used it, it took a second to get the GPS signal, but since then no issues. It finds a signal pretty quickly. The dedicated start/stop button makes it quick and easy to get a run going, which is much appreciated. I haven't used it for other activities so I can't comment on its accuracy when say, biking. The HR monitor is good. I don't think any wrist based HR monitor beats a chest strap, but this is a good alternative if you don't want the additional equipment.
I must also add that this app does allow you to transfer data to other apps (such as MapMyRun and a few others), but I didn't try that out so I can't comment. I don't use other running apps. I used my FitBit before
All in all, this is a good running watch. It's problems are its app (which you can get over, unless you spend an inordinate amount of time viewing your stats within a running app) and the fact that it does nothing to stand out in the crowd. Your likely to lean towards a Garmin because of name recognition, but you can't go wrong with this watch if you need one to track your runs.

Great way to watch shows but no remote

I like the Google Chromecast integration with Google Home and I like being able to control things with my phone, but sometimes I need a remote. Don't get me wrong the Chromecast works well and seemless, and while most people always have their phones with them, I do prefer to use a remote. I just use Chromecasts because I'm invested in the Google ecosystem and Google Home.
At the end of the day, if you use Google Services, this is the best (I think only real) option. But if you have no major investment in any other ecosystem, I would give pause to the no remote thing. It's a fundamental change in how we watch TV; easy to get past, but a minor annoyance nonetheless.

Awesome budget content consumption tablet

I must admit, it was difficult going from Apple iPad screen to the Fire HD 8 (clarity still doesn't compare), but honestly, you can get over that pretty easily. If all you need/use a tablet for is media consumption like streaming shows on the go, reading kindle, reading online newspaper and the occasional websurfing, this is the tablet to get. Best part is the microSD slot. You can put in a card and get the ability to download and store a lot of shows for those time you don't have the internet. If you use Amazon Kindle books and watch TV shows on the go, this is the tablet to get.

Great features, but difficult for unexperienced

I really really want to become a Photoshop wiz. I like the idea of making my new photos pop. But I was always intimated by Photoshop, so I thought I would give Elements a try thinking it was the "beginners" version of Photoshop. Well, I think it is, but it is still difficult to use for those with little to no experience with any photo editing programs.
After installing the software, you are given no instructions. You have to kind of click around to navigate the menus. What I did is click "on Guided" mode and I was able to edit my photos. The coolest thing I did was Photoshop a face onto another photo. It was surprisingly easy.
Once you run through the guided mode, things get easier. You can also utilize the walk through videos which are helpful, but you're better off going on YouTube and watch instructional videos.
Elements also acts as a photo organizer, but I didn't try it out, all of my photos are kept on Google Photos so I don't need another program to organize my photos. I just download the photos that I need/want to Photoshop.
It's a great, powerful photo editing software. But you must put in the time. If you don't think you're patient enough to teach yourself, this may not be for you. Just know you'll have to teach yourself.

Convenient and simple but not perfect
on November 19, 2017
Posted by: callmeageeth

I'm was using Bose SoundSport headphones but I kept having issues with them falling out my ears while working out. And, they tend to die in the middle of a run if you start with the battery level at 40%. I wanted to jump on the completely wireless fad and I was too nervous about the ear bud types, so I was excited to try the "hook" design of the JB Labs version.
First the packaging. It sounds silly, but you can tell how much care a company puts into their product by the packaging. The headphones come in a hardshell plastic case and when you open it up, you have easy access to the vast number of ear tips (they get props for giving you MORE than they should have).
If you're like me and normally go with the default ear tips because you're lazy, you should rethink it. I foudn the default tips didn't stay on my ear very well. I spent some time testing out almost all of the tips and found the ones that worked great. Take your time and try them out for the best possible experience.
That charging case... I was impressed that JB Labs not only gave you a microUSB charging cable, but they smartly designed it to be Incorporated in the case. It literally wraps around the case so it's always there when you need it. Very impressive. The case also has a battery meter on top. Very convenient. The headphones fit in the case and the lid shuts down with a satisfying snap to keep them in place and charging.
The setup was pretty simple. The included instructions are dead simple and easy to follow. I recommend reading them first. You set up one earpiece to your phone and then the second earpiece connects to the first earpiece. After setting it up the first time, you turn on the earpiece you set up first (which connects to your phone and the other earpiece connects automatically).
Once it's set up for the first time, it's pretty easy to use. I love the charging case as it always makes sure your headphones won't die in the middle of a workout. And all you have to do is look at the gauge on the case itself to make sure there's adequate charge.
Now, on to my quips. The audio regularly drops out in one of the earpieces when working out. It's only for a fleeting second, but it's enough to mention a warning here. It doesn't bother me while I'm working out and it could be the phone I use or interference (I Use a Pixel 1). It always reconnects without me doing anything, so to me it's no harm no foul. BUT that might be a problem for others. If I were using these to lounge around and relax and listen to music, then yes, it would be a problem. But for me, I'll take the minor annoyance for the convenience of charging case and no wires. And I must point out this is my experience, it may not happen to you.
Sound quality. I'm no audiophiliac but I can say that these sound pretty good. The bass doesn't resonate quite like my Bose SoundSports but they are acceptable. And I keep going back to the fact that these are workout headphones. For me, I'm not looking for perfect sound quality but decent sounding headphones and are immune to sweat. These fit the bill.
If you are looking for completely wirefree workout headphones, these have to be on your short list. I can't find many (actually any) that have the hook design that are in my humble opinion essential for strenuous workouts. I'm extremely satisfied with these headphones.

I really loved the primitive future storyline. I think it's a refreshing take. The graphics are phenomenal and the controls are tight. The game does a good job of holding your hand when needed, but not being too much. It's a great time (I haven't finished it yet) and I like the simple RPG elements. It's not too overbearing for people like me who don't have a ton of time to invest in games but like to pick up and play when you can.

Google Home features with better sound
on October 31, 2017
Posted by: callmeageeth
from Louisville, KY
Sony is clearly taking their design inspiration (for Google Home products) from Google. Which in my opinion is a good thing, I like the modern aesthetic with muted gray. I personally like the Sony speaker better than Google Home because of the complete coverage of the speaker with fabric, rather than the bottom third of the Google Home. The Sony speaker is a bit taller and also has more heft. I can't describe it, it just feels more premium (that's not to say the Google Home feels cheap or anything, just personal preference).
I have both Google Home and this Sony speaker, I keep the Google Home in the kitchen and the Sony one in my bedroom. Reason being, I liked the clock in the Sony speaker and wanted it on my night stand. Well, that was a mistake. In the middle of the night, those tiny little digits practically illuminate half of my bedroom. I can't figure out if you can turn down the brightness. For now, I've turned it away from my bed (eliminating it's usefulness) and while it's still bright, it doesn't bother me as much.
In terms of setup, it's identical to Google Home. If you've already installed the Google Home app and used it before, adding the Sony speaker could not be easier. You literally plug it in, and bam, it's in the app and it's essentially set up (you tap a few OK buttons). If it's your first go with Google Home App, it's still simple, you just need to download the app and go through some simple tutorials.
The sound is better than the Google Home, but only marginally. You won't notice it when Google Home is talking, or probably even with a podcast playing. But when you're listening to music, it does sound better, as it has richer bass and higher highs. It seems more clear. But again, the difference is negligible. It claims to have 360 degree sound, but that seems like a marketing gimmick. I didn't put it in the middle of the room and walk around it to test it out. I mean, generally it will be near a wall where an outlet is.
Speaking of outlet, the AC plug is HUGE! It requires the bottom plug in your outlet. Not only is it long, but it extends out from your wall pretty far. So keep that in mind, doesn't sound like a big deal until you're trying to plug it in so it's in the perfect spot in your home.
In terms of Google Home features, there really isn't much to say. The microphone is extremely responsive, I found no difference in response time or understanding my voice than the Google Home. It works as advertised.
The one big knock are the physical buttons. So, on the Google Home, you can touch the top and spin your finger in a circle to turn the volume up or down. I don't do it much, but it's convenient when you're in your room laying in bed. Sometimes I've been listening to music, so the volume is up, and when I set my alarm through Google Home, I don't want the alarm to be as loud as the music, so I want to turn the volume down (when no music is playing) when I get into bed. I also don't want to wake my wife up by saying "Hey Google" and risk Google waking her up. So I want to turn the volume down manually. The touch controls on the Sony speaker quite frankly suck. It responds to touch maybe half of the time. Google Home is 100% of the time. The Sony speaker has no touch gesture controls, but that is no good either. You're supposed to wave your hands in specific directions but that's too dicey. I just want to turn volume up and down, that's it.
Other than the small issues of bright clock digits and nonresponsive volume controls, this is a great sounding Google Home Speaker. I can live with my little complaints and would take this one over the Google model for the better sound quality (even if it is negligible, the Sony speaker gets louder).

Just curious what the flight time experience has been like. Says 20 minutes with no payload; however, is the camera considered "payload"? Is it 20 minutes WITH the camera? Also, how close to 20 minutes is the "actual" flight time?

Given that the camera is required to fly I wouldn't think that the camera is considered payload. I've never tried to fly with any payload mostly because I haven't needed to and it doesn't seem equipped to hold anything (you would have to use some ingenuity to attach something to it). I can speak as to how long it flies without any payload but obviously with the camera. And in my use, it's been between 18-19 minutes of flight time. The very first time I flew it, it landed itself due to low battery around the 18 minutes mark, even though on the handheld controller, the screen said there was 2 minutes of flight time left. I haven't flown it enough while taking video/stills to determine how much that drains the battery. Hope that helps.

Is the camera of this bundle the latest one? The ps4 camera? Or the ps3 camera?

Yes, the bundle comes with the newest model camera. The packaging and promotions for the PSVR actually show the older model (which as I understand, will still work). This camera is completely different than the PS3 version.

I can't confirrm that it will work sims from other countries (depends on bandwidths) but I can absolutely confirm that putting a T-Mobile sim into this phone will work. Sorry couldn't give you a better answer!

Charge 2 GoPro lithium-ion batteries simultaneously with this GoPro AHBBP-301 charger that reliably draws power from select USB chargers, USB-enabled computers or GoPro wall or vehicle chargers (not included), so you can keep your camera ready for use.

Does this have the cable to connect charger to computer? Is there a cord that connects camera directly to computer or wall charger for charging? I think we lost ours.

It comes with a mini-USB cable which you can plug into your computer (I wouldn't recommend because of slow charging) and a wall charger. The same mini-USB cable plugs directly into the camera itself
