The Upgrade My Gaming PC Needed

Not too long ago, I bought a pre-built gaming PC. While its specs were impressive, I still wanted to tweak certain components to make it even more powerful. The motherboard that came in the PC is good. It’s one of those “gives you what you need” components, but I wanted “the best.” So, I decided to upgrade to this Dark Hero motherboard, which is a huge step up.
I’ll admit that a motherboard isn’t necessarily the first component I would recommend upgrading in a gaming PC. If you’re happy with your CPU, GPU, and storage, changing the motherboard isn’t suddenly going to give you a bunch of extra FPS. In my case, though, I wanted a better foundation for the rest of my system, and that’s where the Dark Hero really makes sense.
The biggest difference I noticed compared with the original motherboard is just how much more I can do with the Dark Hero. The original motherboard gave me the basics I needed, but the Dark Hero gives me considerably more room to expand. There are multiple M.2 slots, PCIe 5.0 support, USB4, Wi-Fi 7, 10Gb Ethernet, Bluetooth, and a huge number of USB connections. I’m much less likely to run out of options as I continue upgrading the PC.
I also really appreciate the attention ASUS put into making this board easier to work with. The tool-free M.2 installation is one of those features that sounds minor until you actually have to install or replace an NVMe drive. Not having to deal with tiny M.2 screws is fantastic. The PCIe Q-Release is another feature I didn’t realize I would appreciate so much until I had it. Removing a large graphics card can be awkward, and being able to release it more easily makes working inside the PC much less frustrating.
The onboard diagnostic display is another nice addition. With the original motherboard, troubleshooting wasn’t nearly as convenient. Being able to see diagnostic information directly on the motherboard gives me a much better idea of what’s happening when I’m working on the system.
The build quality is also noticeably different. The Dark Hero feels like a premium component. It’s substantial, the heatsinks are massive, and the all-black design looks fantastic. I really like that ASUS didn’t go overboard with the gamer aesthetic. It has some RGB, but overall it has a much more understated look that works really well in my system.
The BIOS is another area where I noticed the difference. ASUS gives me an incredible number of options for configuring the system, including extensive memory and CPU tuning options. I don’t necessarily need to use every one of them, but I like knowing they’re there. As I continue upgrading the PC, having that level of control gives me a lot more flexibility than I had with the original motherboard.
The storage options are particularly appealing to me. I can add multiple NVMe drives without immediately worrying about running out of slots. There are some bandwidth-sharing limitations depending on which M.2 slots I use and what other features are enabled, so anyone building a system like this should pay attention to the motherboard manual when planning their storage. Still, having this many options is a huge improvement over the original motherboard.
For me, though, the point of the upgrade wasn’t simply to get more FPS. I wanted to build a system that I could keep upgrading without constantly running into limitations. The Dark Hero gives me that flexibility. I’m getting substantially more connectivity, expansion options, storage support, power delivery, and enthusiast-level controls than I had with the original motherboard.
After using the Dark Hero, the original motherboard feels much more like a starting point. It did its job, and there was nothing particularly wrong with it. The Dark Hero just gives me a much better foundation for the kind of system I want to build.
Overall, I’m extremely happy with the upgrade. The Dark Hero is definitely overkill for a lot of people, and I wouldn’t recommend spending this much on a motherboard just for the sake of having a flagship model. But if you’re already building a high-end AM5 system and want a motherboard that gives you plenty of room to expand and customize, I think the Dark Hero is worth considering.

Great Hardware With a Few Software Rough Edges

I’ve been using the Turtle Beach Command Series KB7 for gaming as well as everyday typing, and I’ve been pretty impressed with it overall. There’s a lot going on with this keyboard, and while it isn’t perfect, the hardware itself is really good.
I love the design of the keyboard. The TKL layout give me plenty of room on my desktop, which keeps it comfortable for everyday use as well as gaming. Since I use Apple Magic keyboard with my Mac Studio, I really like the low-profile keys. The aluminum top gives it a nice premium feel.
The keyboard is very comfortable to type on. The Hall Effect switches are incredibly smooth and responsive and it’s great that I can adjust the actuation point. The KB7 feels extremely fast, and I haven’t noticed any latency while using it.
The programmable buttons and media controls are also handy. I like being able to adjust the volume and control media without reaching for the mouse. There are a lot of ways to customize the keyboard, and Turtle Beach gives you plenty of room to make it work the way you want.
The 4.3-inch touchscreen immediately grabbed my attention. I have used another keyboard that has a similar feature and it’s actually a suprisingly useful feature. I can set up shortcuts, control different functions, access macros, and monitor things like system information. It’s basically a little control center built right into the keyboard, which is pretty cool and saves me from having another device taking up space on my desk.
Where I’ve run into some frustration is with the Swarm II software. It gives you a ton of customization options, but it can also feel slow and a little clunky. Some changes take longer than I’d expect to sync, and the firmware update process could definitely be more straightforward. I’ve also had the touchscreen occasionally feel sluggish, particularly when switching between pages. It’s easy to accidentally hit a button when you’re trying to swipe to another page.
That’s probably my biggest complaint about the KB7. The hardware feels like a premium product, but the software doesn’t always feel like it’s at the same level yet. Hopefully Turtle Beach continues to improve it with firmware and software updates.
One other thing worth knowing before buying is that Turtle Beach’s Swarm II software is Windows-only. The keyboard itself can be used with a Mac, but you won’t have access to the full customization experience through the software. That’s not necessarily a deal breaker for a gaming keyboard that’s primarily designed for PC, but it’s something Mac users should know before spending this much on it.
I’d also pay attention to the USB requirements before buying. Depending on your setup, the keyboard can require two USB-A connections, which could be a problem if you’re using a laptop or already have most of your ports occupied.
Despite those issues, I really like using the KB7. The switches feel great, the keyboard is responsive, the customization options are impressive, and I actually find the touchscreen useful. It’s definitely more keyboard than most people need, but if you’re a serious gamer, streamer, or someone who just likes having a lot of customization options, there’s a lot to like here.

Big-Screen Entertainment Without the Big Price

I’ve been blessed with more than one large-screen TV over the years and one of the things that has impressed me lately is how affordable they have become. This TCL model stands out because of this. I had heard about other large-screen 4K models from TCL so I was eager to try this one.
With it being 75-inches, I wanted to make sure I had the right amount of space set aside so I got a TV stand in my office and attached its stand so it would sit balanced on the stand. That was very easy, but it did require two people because of its size.
So far, I have watched videos using the built-in Roku TV and played some video games on my Xbox. At first, I wasn’t sure how I would like this TV for game playing since it’s only 60Hz for a refresh rate, but the motion enhancement feature really smooths out gameplay. It’s not exactly the same as a higher refresh rate television, but it’s a decent compromise for the price point.
Another feature I love is the sleek design of the TV. Since it has a bezel-less design, it really blends the screen into the surrounding environment. This was absolutely intentional to keep the viewer’s attention on the picture rather than the television itself. For me, it absolutely works.
I’m very impressed with the picture quality of this TV. It’s surprisingly bright and the colors are very vibrant. Even though it’s an LED monitor, this TCL TV doesn’t have local dimming, mini-LED backlighting, or QLED technology so there is still room for improvement. All it really means is that buyers should keep their expectations of this budget-friendly TV reasonable and realistic. It’s a great picture, but it’s not meant to compete with the high-end OLEDs.
All in all, this TV is a solid option. It isn’t trying to be something that it isn’t and it delivers a familiar smart TV experience along with useful modern features.

Strong Gaming Performance in a Laptop That Works

I’ve wanted an Alienware laptop for a very long time. So I was very excited to get this Alienware 15. It does a good job of finding the balance between high-performance gaming and everyday productivity use.
The initial setup took longer than I expected, although most of that time was spent installing Windows updates rather than actually setting up the laptop. It took approximately a minute and a half to reach the update process, followed by about 19 minutes of updates and reboots. After that, it took approximately another three minutes to log in and finish the setup process. Once I completed the initial setup, there were still additional updates required, which took another 13 minutes and 14 seconds.
For my setup, I chose to configure the Alienware 15 as a new PC. I skipped phone synchronization, customization, photo backup, and the various optional offers for Microsoft 365, OneDrive, and Game Pass. After setup, I found 67 apps installed, including six Dell or Alienware-related applications. There were also 246 processes running at startup. The number of processes by itself isn’t necessarily a problem, but I would have preferred to see a slightly cleaner software setup out of the box.
The 512GB SSD is another strong point. Using CrystalDiskMark, I measured sequential read speeds of up to 5,210 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 4,029 MB/s. Those are very good results, and the drive feels fast when launching applications, opening files, and working with Windows.
The capacity is the part I’m less enthusiastic about. A 512GB SSD doesn’t give you a tremendous amount of usable space once Windows, applications, and games are installed. Gaming laptops can fill that space surprisingly quickly. Fortunately, storage can be upgraded, so I don’t consider the 512GB capacity a deal-breaker. It’s just something I’d keep in mind if you’re planning to install a large game library.
The 16GB of memory is probably the specification I’d be most likely to upgrade eventually. It has been enough for everything I’ve done with the laptop so far, including productivity and general multitasking, but gaming laptops in this class can benefit from additional memory, particularly if you’re planning to use the system for more demanding workloads in addition to gaming.
The design is unmistakably Alienware with the familiar Alien logo on the top of the lid. The only thing I’m not a big fan of is the offset keyboard. Because it includes the 10-key, the main part of the keyboard and trackpad are off-center with the frame of the laptop. Other than that, I like the overall design of the computer.
The display size and resolution is very nice. I verified the 165Hz refresh rate using UFO Test, and the higher refresh rate makes everything feel noticeably smoother. Scrolling through websites, moving windows around, and navigating Windows all feel responsive, while games can take advantage of the higher refresh rate as well. The 1920 x 1200 resolution also makes sense for the RTX 4050 in this laptop because it doesn’t ask the GPU to drive an unnecessarily high resolution.
Performance has been very good for my everyday use. The Intel Core 7 240H has handled everything I’ve thrown at it without any issues, whether I’m browsing with multiple tabs open, working with several applications, watching videos, or switching between tasks.
I ran several benchmarks to see how the Alienware 15 performs beyond my normal day-to-day use. In Geekbench 7, it scored 2,393 in single-core and 12,363 in multi-core, with an OpenCL GPU score of 61,420. I also ran Cinebench 2024, where it scored 585 in single-core and 2,884 in multi-core.
For AI performance, Geekbench AI returned scores of 3,336 for Single Precision, 1,491 for Half Precision, and 6,770 for Quantized. These results give me a useful baseline for the system’s AI capabilities, particularly for workloads that can take advantage of quantized models.
The single-core results indicate that the Alienware 15 should feel quick and responsive during everyday activities such as launching applications, browsing the web, and working with individual programs. The multi-core performance is more important when you’re asking the processor to handle multiple demanding tasks at once. While this isn’t positioned as an extreme workstation, the Core 7 240H provides plenty of performance for the way I use this laptop.
The RTX 4050 also gives the Alienware 15 a solid foundation for gaming. I ran a FurMark benchmark and received a score of 6,658. I would still recommend looking at actual game performance rather than relying entirely on synthetic benchmarks, but the results give me a useful baseline for the GPU.
Of course, benchmarks don’t tell the entire story. What matters more to me is how a laptop feels when I’m actually using it, and the Alienware 15 has felt responsive throughout my testing. I haven’t encountered any problems with everyday multitasking or general productivity.
The speakers are decent and get louder than I expected. At only 50% volume, I found them plenty loud for normal use. The sound quality is also very good overall. My first test was listening to “Everlong” by Foo Fighters, and I initially thought the sound was a little hollow. I was concerned that the speakers might be one of the weaker parts of the laptop. However, after watching videos featuring “Duel of the Fates” from The Phantom Menace and a scene from X-Men: First Class, I came away much more impressed. The soundtracks sounded full, and the mix was strong and even. I wouldn’t replace a good set of headphones or dedicated speakers with them, but they’re more than adequate for watching movies, playing games, and general use.
After spending time with the Alienware 15, I’ve come away impressed with the overall experience. For me, the Alienware 15 is a good choice for someone who wants a gaming laptop that can also handle everyday productivity. It has the performance, display, keyboard, and overall usability to work as an everyday PC while still providing the gaming-focused hardware you’d expect from Alienware.

Impressive Battery Life and Great Features

I’ve been wearing a smartwatch for many years, so I was curious to see how the Amazfit Bip Max would compare, particularly since it offers many of the same types of health, fitness, notification, and smartwatch features at a much lower price. After almost a week with the Bip Max, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much it offers.
Setting up the Bip Max was very straightforward, especially if you’ve used a smartwatch or fitness tracker before. After downloading the Zepp app for iOS or Android, you simply follow the on-screen instructions. The watch displays a QR code that makes pairing with your phone easy, and I was prompted to install a software update. The update took about five minutes.
I was also impressed by the number of watch faces available. There are plenty of options to choose from, making it easy to customize the watch to your preferences. The touchscreen is very responsive, and navigating through the watch feels smooth and intuitive.
The one area of setup that I didn’t particularly like was the watch band. Attaching the band was a little awkward, and I ultimately needed a small flat-head screwdriver to move the locking mechanism into place. Once attached, the included band also felt a little large on the underside of my wrist. Fortunately, Amazfit offers other replacement bands, and they’re reasonably priced.
One of the things I noticed almost immediately was how responsive the Bip Max is with notifications. While testing the watch, I happened to be waiting for an Instacart delivery. Every time the shopper made a change to the order, I received a very noticeable haptic vibration on my wrist.
In fact, I found the vibration more noticeable than what I typically experience with my other smartwatch. That’s a small thing, but it’s exactly the kind of feature that makes a device like this useful in everyday life.
Battery life is one of the Bip Max’s biggest advantages. After almost a week, the watch is still at 56% battery. I have been switching back and forth between the Bip Max and my other smartwatch during testing, so I haven’t been wearing the Bip Max continuously. However, even when it wasn’t being actively worn, the battery drain at idle was minimal.
I obviously haven’t had enough time to verify Amazfit’s maximum battery-life claim, but the battery performance I’ve seen so far is very encouraging. Coming from an traditional smartwatch, not having to think about charging the watch every day is a welcome change.
The Bip Max provides a wide range of health and fitness tracking features, including heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep, stress, workouts, and other activity measurements.
The stress tracking is particularly interesting because the watch uses physiological information such as heart-rate variability to estimate stress levels. I wouldn’t consider this a replacement for an actual blood-pressure monitor, but it can provide another way to observe changes in your body’s response throughout the day.
The watch also works with Zepp Aura, which adds additional sleep and wellness insights, coaching, reports, and other personalized information. I like that Aura Premium is available for people who want more detailed analysis, but I don’t feel that it’s necessary to get value from the Bip Max. The watch itself provides plenty of useful tracking without requiring a subscription.
The Bip Max isn’t an traditional smartwatch replacement in every respect. Other smartwatches have much deeper integration with the their respective phone operating systems, a larger app ecosystem, and more extensive communication features.
However, the Bip Max does a lot of the things that many people actually want from a smartwatch: it tracks activity and health information, provides notifications, offers GPS and workout tracking, has a bright touchscreen, and provides excellent battery life. And it does all of that without requiring you to charge the watch every day.
After almost a week of use, I’ve been impressed with the Amazfit Bip Max. Is it perfect? No, but it’s very useable and at its price point, I think it’s very capable for most smartwatch and fitness tracking functions.

Powerful Gaming Performance

I’ve used plenty of gaming laptops over the years, but this is my first time using an ASUS TUF gaming laptop. The A16 has been very impressive so far. It balances gaming performance and everyday use really well. It has the power I expect from a gaming laptop, but it doesn’t feel like I can only use it for gaming.
The finish gives the A16 a clean look that I really like. It definitely has a gaming laptop design, but it isn’t overly flashy or covered in unnecessary lighting. I could easily use this for work without feeling like I’m carrying around something that looks like it belongs exclusively in a gaming setup. It does feel heavier than other productivity-centered laptops I’ve used, but it’s not what I would consider ‘bulky.’
The screen looked nice and sharp and honestly, it’s better than what I expected with a 1920 x 1200 (full HD+) resolution. The 165Hz refresh rate is especially nice for more premium games and even outside of gaming, I can tell the difference when scrolling through websites or moving windows around. Everything just feels smoother.
Performance is probably the biggest reason I’d consider or recommend buying the A16. The processor handled everything I threw at it without much effort. I wanted to see how it performed beyond just using it normally, so I ran several benchmarks.

The much higher multi-core scores are where the Ryzen 9 8940HX really shows its strength. With 16 cores and 32 threads, it’s well suited for demanding workloads like video editing, rendering, compiling, and heavy multitasking.
The GPU score also shows that the RTX 5070 has plenty of graphics processing power for gaming and other GPU-intensive applications. The Geekbench AI results indicate that the system also has good potential for AI-related workloads, particularly when using quantized models.
Of course, benchmarks don’t tell the entire story, but they give me a good baseline for what this hardware is capable of. More importantly, that performance translates into the real-world experience. The A16 feels extremely responsive, and I can have multiple applications running at the same time without the laptop feeling like it’s struggling to keep up.
The 512GB SSD is fast. Really fast. Using CrystalDiskMark, I measured sequential read speeds of up to 6,306 MB/s, while sequential write speeds reached 3,604 MB/s. Everything loads quickly, and I haven’t had any complaints about the drive’s performance. The capacity is another story. 512GB just doesn’t feel like a lot of storage anymore, especially on a gaming laptop. A few large games can eat up a huge chunk of that space, so I’d really like to see a 1TB SSD included in a laptop like this. Thankfully, the storage can be upgraded, so I don’t consider this a major problem. It’s just something I’d plan on doing eventually.
I’ve also been using the A16 for plenty of regular typing, not just gaming, and I’ve been comfortable with the keyboard. I tested myself on Monkeytype and managed 81 WPM with 99% accuracy. That’s obviously a personal result rather than a laptop benchmark, but it gives you an idea of how quickly I was able to get comfortable with the keyboard. The only thing I didn’t like was that I kept tapping the up arrow when I reached with my right pinky to tap the Shift key. It’s a shorter shift key so I made a lot of mistakes as I was getting used to that layout.
The speakers are very good. I ran a Dolby Atmos 5.1 surround sound test on YouTube, and I was genuinely impressed with what I heard. The volume gets plenty loud, the sound quality is very good, and the surround channels were reproduced accurately during the test. I’m not going to say the built-in speakers replace a dedicated surround sound system, but they’re good enough that I don’t feel like I have to immediately connect headphones or external speakers whenever I want to watch something.
If I do any upgrades, the two things I’ll probably look into is the storage and RAM. This model only comes with 16GB of RAM and that spec feels a little out of place. So far, it’s been fine to drive my gaming habits and productivity needs, but having a little more power under the hood would help with multitasking more. I also think the processor and GPU deserve more than 16GB of RAM.
After spending time with the ASUS TUF Gaming A16, I’ve come away pretty impressed. I’ve been able to use it for regular productivity, typing, multitasking, media, and other everyday tasks without feeling like I’m using a gaming laptop that’s being forced to do office work.
For me, the ASUS TUF Gaming A16 hits a really nice balance. I get the performance I want from a gaming laptop, but I also get a machine that’s comfortable to use for everyday work. That’s what makes this laptop stand out to me.

Unique swappable battery stands out as a great fea

I’ve used a lot of gaming headsets over the years, so it takes something different to really grab my attention. The Glorious GHS Wireless InfinitePlay did exactly that with its hot-swappable battery system, but after spending some time with it, I found there’s a lot more to like than just that one feature.
Getting everything set up was quick and easy. I used the headset with both my PC and my iPad, and Bluetooth pairing was about as simple as it gets. As soon as I put the headset into pairing mode, it showed up almost immediately in my iPad’s Bluetooth settings and connected within seconds. Connecting to my PC with the included 2.4 GHz wireless dongle was just as easy, and I was ready to jump into a game within a few minutes.
The headset also made a good first impression. Even though it’s mostly plastic, it doesn’t feel cheap at all. It’s lightweight, feels well put together, and the ear cushions are soft enough that I had no problem wearing it for gaming sessions that lasted three to four hours. My ears got a little warm by the end of those longer sessions, but never sweaty or uncomfortable, and the headband never created any pressure on the top of my head.
I tested the headset with Call of Duty, Gears of War, and The Finals using the default sound profile. I never felt the need to install the Glorious Core software or change the EQ because it sounded good right out of the box. Footsteps were easy to hear, which is always important in competitive shooters, and explosions had enough bass to make the action feel immersive without overpowering everything else. If I had one complaint, it would be the maximum volume. I found myself turning it almost all the way up during gameplay, and I think it could benefit from having a little more headroom. Even so, the overall sound quality was balanced and enjoyable.
The detachable microphone also worked well. My teammates never had any issues hearing me, and voice chat stayed clear throughout my gaming sessions. I also like that you can remove the boom mic when you don’t need it, which gives the headset a cleaner look for listening to music or watching videos.
The feature that really sets this headset apart is the battery system. I never actually needed to swap batteries because the battery life is excellent, but I tested it anyway just to see how it worked. Swapping the battery while wearing the headset was surprisingly easy, and the headset stayed connected the entire time. Having a second battery charging in the dock means you’re always ready to keep playing without having to plug the headset into a charging cable.
Overall, I was really impressed with the Glorious GHS Wireless InfinitePlay. It’s comfortable, lightweight, sounds good for both competitive and casual gaming, and the battery swapping system is one of those features that quickly makes you wonder why more headsets don’t do it this way.
If you’re looking for a wireless gaming headset with some genuinely useful features and solid all-around performance, this one is definitely worth checking out.

A impressive option for crypto security

I’ve been interested in cryptocurrency for a while now, but I haven’t ever invested in it heavily. I do have one small Bitcoin account through a different financial platform, but it was gifted to me and I’ve never really done much with it. That said, I love the idea of the Tangem Ring acting as your wallet. It seems much more convenient than carrying around a separate hardware device every time you need to access your crypto.
Even though I’m not a crypto expert, I found the setup process surprisingly simple. After downloading the Tangem app, I paired the ring and the two included backup cards with my phone using NFC. The app walks you through each step, so it never felt overwhelming or overly technical.
One thing I like about Tangem’s approach is that the ring isn’t trying to be another smart ring. It doesn’t have a battery that needs charging or features that you’ll probably never use. Its sole purpose is to securely authenticate access to your wallet, and I appreciate that simplicity.
The ring is very well-built. The ceramic finish gives it a clean, premium look, and unless someone knew what it was, they’d probably assume it was just a stylish black ring. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and doesn’t really draw attention to itself. I like that it’s plain and there is no branding on it.
As I mentioned, I had some bitcoin stored on a different exchange. In order to get it into the Tangem system, I had to basically transfer it over. That way, Tangem became my new wallet.
The Tangem app is well designed. It’s clean, easy to navigate, and makes it simple to view your assets, receive cryptocurrency, or transfer funds when needed. I never felt like I was digging through complicated menus to find what I needed.
Overall, I came away impressed with how approachable the Tangem Ring makes hardware wallet security. If you’ve been curious about moving your cryptocurrency off an exchange and into a wallet that you control, this feels like one of the easiest ways to get started. It combines strong security with a simple setup and a design that doesn’t feel intimidating, even for someone who is still fairly new to crypto.

Great for Basic Computing, Limited for Power Users

I’ve always been intrigued by all-in-one machines. One of the first machines I purchased on my own was an all-in-one and it was great. It was at the beginning of that craze so even though they tried to bill it as a simple way to have a desktop, I still ended up having a lot of separate components and peripherals.
Today, the story is quite a bit different. This OmniStudio is slim, and other than a power cable, it doesn’t require much. It has built in WiFi 6, which is more than powerful enough for most people’s needs and even though it comes with a wired keyboard and mouse, you can swap those out for wireless options if you want. The computer also has built-in Bluetooth 5.4 and a generous USB hub on the back of the screen.
Given it’s form factor, I think it has the capability to be very versatile for many different uses. It can be good for students, general home use (email, web browsing, etc.) and in some cases, it can handle general productivity tasks. The thing to know with this unit is that it is not a designed for photo editing, video editing, or gaming.
I did run some benchmark tests on it that I thought would help paint a full picture of what it is useful for.
Geekbench 6: This test measures overall performance of a system. It runs a series of workloads that simulate different tasks like web browsing, document processing, photo manipulation, and other everyday computing tasks. The test results I got were Single-Core 1,182 and Multi-Core 3,076. These numbers are in line with what you would expect from the processor included on the OmniStudio. The scores also indicate that the computer is good for email, Microsoft Office, web browsing, streaming videos, video calls, and basic school work tasks. The scores also confirm that it’s not ideal for photo editing, video editing, large spreadsheets, or running multiple demanding applications simultaneously.
CrystalDiskMark: This test measures a system’s storage performance. The sequential read speeds were 1,089 MB/s while the write speeds were around 746 MB/s. The random read speed was around 190 MB/s and the random write speed was approximately 22-32 MB/s. This is decent for a budget all-in-one machine like the OmniStudio. The read speeds are much faster than traditional hard drives and should allow Windows and applications to open reasonably quickly. The weaker random write performance is typical of lower-cost storage solutions and may become noticeable when installing large applications, performing updates, or moving lots of small files. Some limitations a user might encounter are large file transfers, heavy application workloads, or maintaining lots of locally stored files.
Cinebench: This test actually locked up. It ran most of the test and then when it came to ‘finishing the render’, the test froze. It didn’t lock up the computer, but I did have to force quit Cinebench. Because Cinebench measures CPU performance by rendering a complex 3D scene, it is designed to push processors under a heavy workload. Therefore, a lockup would suggest that this system is definitely not designed for sustained heavy CPU workloads.
After running the benchmark tests, I also made note of some real-world system tasks.
Startup: I took approximately 22 seconds for the system to full boot up from being shut down. While this timing isn’t as fast as higher-end PCs, it’s an acceptable startup time for a basic system like the OmniStudio.
Initial Background Processes: After getting it set up for the first time, I checked to see how many processes were running in task manager. There were 208 tasks running. This is important to note because even though this isn’t unusual, with this system only having 8GB of RAM, there isn’t much room for multitasking of applications.
Everyday Performance Test: To see how much memory and CPU usage the system uses with typical tasks, I opened a web browser and then opened several tabs. One of the windows in the browser was playing YouTube video at 1080P playback. The CPU usage was between 11-18%, but the memory use was 6.6GB or 86%. This means that while the processor can handle multitasking well, the memory usage is the bigger limitation. Normally, this would be the point where adding more RAM could improve the experience, but the memory in this configuration is not upgradeable.
Storage Capacity: This is another area of concern. It comes with 128GB of storage, but after Windows, HP applications (there are 11), and system files, less than half of that storage remains available. Typically, this would still be fine for document storage, but not photos or videos. You could add an external storage device or rely on cloud services for additional storage.
Webcam: The computer comes with a built-in 1080P webcam with a shutter that you can close with a switch for privacy. It seems functional enough, but the picture quality using the included Camera app seemed grainy even though the room I was using wasn’t dim.
WiFi: I did a speed test and found that it the computer was getting excellent speeds. We have a 1GB fiber connection to our house and a WiFi 7 wireless router. The OmniStudio was getting 500+ MB/s download and 430+ MB/s upload, which is more than enough for streaming 4K video, cloud storage, online classes, and general browsing. WiFi is not a limitation on this system.
Keyboard and Mouse: I mentioned this briefly, but the system does come with a keyboard and mouse. They aren’t much to write home about, but they seemed to work well with the computer. I would probably upgrade to wireless peripherals, but if you don’t have that option, they should work fine for standard tasks.
Screen: The 1080p screen looks great. I didn’t have any issue with the color, brightness, or text clarity. It’s very easy to read on and work with.
Overall, this isn’t a bad system, but it could do with some cleanup/optimization to run smoother and to make the most of it. It is solid for basic work though. And at the price it’s being offered, I think it can work well for the right user.

Solid compact laptop option

I am constantly amazed by the quality of smaller laptops like this 14-inch Zenbook. While its exterior isn’t aluminum, the performance definitely gives you a premium experience. It has an amazing OLED screen and a comfortable keyboard to type on. The speakers also provide a great listening experience. The volume level is impressive, and I found myself only needing to keep it around 14-16 for comfortable listening.
The setup is standard for a Windows laptop. I walked through the setup screens and waited for close to an hour while updates were finished. This was longer than I expected, but Windows updates usually take some time, so I wasn’t overly concerned. The laptop comes with a 100W power adapter with a USB-C connector on it.
When I started setting up the laptop, I noticed how nice the keyboard on it is. It doesn’t include the 10-key number pad, but the keys are nicely spaced out, and when I completed a typing test, I got a score of 86 WPM with 99% accuracy. This is much higher than my usual 73-75 WPM.
After I walked through the setup and general use cases of the laptop, I moved on to some benchmarking tests.

Geekbench 6 shows strong overall performance across the board, with excellent single-core speed that translates to snappy everyday responsiveness. Apps open quickly, the system feels fluid during general use, and light tasks are handled effortlessly. The multi-core result also points to plenty of headroom for heavier workloads like video editing, multitasking, and creative work. The GPU compute score rounds things out by showing capable performance for acceleration-based tasks such as photo and video processing, making this a well-balanced system for productivity-focused users.

Single Precision Score: 1779 / Half Precision Score: 3042 / Quantized Score: 6594
Geekbench AI highlights how well the system handles modern machine learning and inference-style workloads. The scores that were returned after the tests were completed show performance is solid across different precision levels. This suggests it can comfortably support AI-assisted features in productivity apps and Windows tools. The quantized result, in particular, shows efficiency in optimized AI tasks, pointing toward good readiness for newer AI-driven workflows without relying on dedicated hardware.
FurMark Benchmark
Score: 2404 points
FurMark pushes the GPU under extreme stress to test sustained performance and stability. The results show the system is able to maintain consistent output under heavy load, even if this type of workload is far beyond normal day-to-day use. While not reflective of real gaming performance, it does provide a useful look at thermal behavior and sustained GPU capability when the system is pushed hard for extended periods.
Overall, this 14-inch Zenbook is a really well-rounded small laptop that feels great to use day to day. The OLED display looks excellent, the keyboard is comfortable, and the speakers are better than you would expect at this size. Performance is strong for everyday work and even holds up well in heavier tasks based on the benchmark results. It ends up being a solid all-around option for productivity, media, and light creative work.

No. Unfortunately, Google has limited functionality to only the Nest thermostat. At this time, I don't see them opening up support for third parties as they are probably trying to push it with their own hardware, but that could always change.
