Another R.E.M. compilation
on October 20, 2007

This compilation showcases some of REM's songs from the late 1980s to early 2000s. The style of the songs range from pop-like and mellow to harsh rock.
Seeing the songs that were chose for this "Best Of", I wonder what happened to my favorite REM tunes (I only see 2 that I'd consider putting on repeat for hours). The songs on this album aren't bad, I just believe there are better songs that could have made it.
If you own the majority of REM's music or if you prefer REMs older sound, then you can skip this. For me, I think I can make a better compilation of this group that will better suit my taste.
What's great about it: Lots of songs
What's not so great: Choice of songs could have been better

Another classic from R.E.M.
on October 19, 2007

Reckoning is another early REM classic . When this cd plays, I doubt there would be a single song anyone would want to skip over. My favorites include "Camera", "Pretty Persuasion", "Rockville", and the hit "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)".
My only complaint is that this album only contains 10 tracks and has less than 50 minutes worth of music. However, the music from Reckoning is beautiful and timeless. Definitely worth the purchase.
What's great about it: Beautiful, Easy on the ears
What's not so great: more tracks would have been nice

UP kinda brings you down
on October 18, 2007

This album wasn't as popular as previous REM albums, and I think I understand why. Besides the bands seemingly new mission to continue different paths from their original sound, the overall feel to UP is a bit gloomy and dark. The overall musical sound is murky but the lyrics still run deep (Stipe is still an amazing poet). I remember "Daysleeper" and "At My Most Beautiful" being pushed as the breakout songs, but unsure of how well they did. My personal favorites include "Lotus", "You're in the Air", and "Walk Unafraid".
This album is good, but it isn't one of R.E.M.'s best. I don't listen to the majority of the songs that often anymore, but since I'm an REM fan, I had to get this album.
What's great about it: More exploration, different sound

The beginning of change & experimentation
on October 17, 2007

When comparing this album with R.E.M.'s previous music, it seems as if REM wanted to do something completely different from their previous albums. Listeners will definitely notice more of a edgy rock sound, even in the slower songs. There is a lot of electric guitar present in most of the this album.
Hits from this include "What's the Frequency Kenneth", "Star69", and "Crush with Eyeliner". My personal favs are "Band & Blame" and "Circus Envy".
This album is where some longtime REM fans began to lose interest in the band's experimental sounds in their music. I however embrace it and think the band does a very good job with this and later albums.
What's great about it: Different style, Rock edge
What's not so great: Different style, Rock edge (for some)

REM turning mellow?
on October 16, 2007

Music that only REM can do: flowing, harmonious rock music accompanied by lyrics so deep that one can easily become swallowed. This album was good when I first got it and it's still good today. The songs are mellow and somewhat similar that one can tell that there is definitely a theme associated with this gem. I've enjoyed listening to all songs including the hits "All the Way to Reno" and "Imitation of Life". My personal favorites include "Disappear", "Saturn Return", and "Lifting".
This is another mellow album by R.E.M. that I really enjoy as well as listen to from time to time. If that's not your thing, then this might not be for you.
What's great about it: Great music, amazing lyrics
What's not so great: No huge range in style (if that's a bad thing)

REM 1st Album + bonus stuff
on October 15, 2007

Many of the songs from this are outtakes and things that REM did back in their early days. For instance "Voice of Harold" uses the music from 7 Chinese Bros (from another REM album) and "Toys in the Attic" is a cover from the original Aerosmith song. The last 5 tracks are from the very first REM album, Chronic Town. The lyrics aren't very complex compared to those on later albums, but understandably, the members were very young aa lot less seasoned. The melodies are still there (a good thing).
Though the group sounds much different today I'd tell anyone to pick this album up, especially if you have a desire to know where R.E.M. has been.
What's great about it: It's R.E.M., nuff said
What's not so great: Not really a "polished", studio album

Another good album by REM
on October 14, 2007

Not exactly sure which album number this is for R.E.M., but regardless, it's a very good, mellow album. The majority of the songs are either relaxing or make you think (the only exception is "Wanderlust", but even that won't make you get out of your chair). Though the style for the songs are somewhat similar, there are a few that jump out, like "Leaving New York," "The Outsiders", & "Boy In The Well".
If you want something more up-tempo, then you may want to skip this one. But if you do, you will miss out on a good album.
What's great about it: Beautiful songs
What's not so great: Hardly any variety in song pace

Early R.E.M.

This is one of REM's early albums. Though this is one of their first albums, the lyrics are deep and complex with music that will reach anyone's emotions. There aren't any bad songs on this, really, though my favorites include "Driver 8", "Kohoutek", and "Feeling Gravity's Pull".
Great album by REM.
What's great about it: Another early classic

Mercyme does it again
on October 11, 2007

Of all the Contemporary Christian artist, MercyMe is one of the best. With past albums including "Almost There" and "Undone" it is very easy to see why. They don't disappoint with Coming Up to Breath".
There are so many great songs including the hit "So Long Self" (my favorite) as well as "Something About You", "One Trick Pony", and "3:42 AM (Writer's Block)."
This is my second MercyMe album that I've purchased and I look forward to their next album release.
What's great about it: so many good songs to listen to
What's not so great: none

The Lips do it again

This as well as their latter albums have a bit of "pop" flare in comparison to their earlier work. Older fans may complain but for me, it shows how much the band has matured.
There are so many good songs, but I think my favorite is "Sound Of Failure, The / It's Dark...Is It Always This Dark?"
Excellent job by the Lips.
