Since laptops don't come with players any more, my son needed something to put his games, etc. in his laptop. This was the way to go, because it is small in size and he could put it in his laptop case with no problem. My son had a desk top computer on his truck and it was having problems, so he decided to go with a laptop this time. He always wanted Alienware, so that is what he went with. My son, the truck driver wore out the flat screen he had on his truck. The lifespan on a truck is not as long as one that sits in a house that doesn't move or vibrate. Since we have all Samsung TV's and other appliances, he decided to get one too. He really likes having a smart tv now. My son needed something to store all his movies and books, both audio and e books, and music so that he did not use up all the storage on his new laptop. He is a truck driver and is gone for weeks at a time. When he comes home he gets any new movie we have and puts it in the external hard drive so he has movies to watch when he is not driving. We have many WD external My Book hard drives that we use for the same reason..

Our sons cat chewed on the cord that connected my old computer to our network! Since it didn't come with it in that computer, we couldn't get online. The card in my husbands laptop didn't work very well either, so he would use it on both of the computers. We decided that this would be the best way to go, since it went between the two devices. We needed these to hook up the 4K to TV, DVD, etc. This is necessary to view anything in 4K. The regular cables will not allow you to see the 4K, so if you have that in your electronics, I would suggest you upgrade your cables. Most of the time the salesmen don't tell you that you need to get special cables to be able to view this kind of upgrade in viewing. It does help!

Is window 10 different from office? How important is office?
Office is important only if you want to use the programs that are in it. If you plan on using any of the applications in office you need to get it. The templates they have are endless for everything from writing letters or even just making a list of Dvd's like I did for the boxes and boxes of movies we own. What is available in office is not available on Windows 10 in that Windows is an operating system. Office is like putting an app in your computer to make you computer do the things you want to do. I always have office in my computer so I can use it when I need it. Go online and check out what Office can do, and what different programs are in it. It even includes a free email service called Outlook that is excellent.

Can be used like a normal cd/dvd player that comes on desktop computers. Have used them with laptops and netbooks since they don't come with them.

1. Is this compatible with macbook and windows 10? 2. How do you install? Is there software? If there is software and macbook DOES NOT have an internal drive, do I use this external drive to install cd?
It should say on the box if it is mac or apple compatible. No problems with windows 10. Your computer probably already has the software in it. This drive is to be used to install any program or game or movie that is on CD or DVD.

Will it connect to a Lenovo thinkpad Y14 (20y). Or does it need a special y-type usb 2.0 connector? Im using windows 10 and the thinkkpad also has a usb 3.0 Port.
Should just connect through the USB port. I have used this type, but a little older and they always were USB.
