90s Slacker Classic - Are You A Mallrat?

Love comics? Pop culture? Have issues with communication and relationships? Still trying to find yourself and your true purpose?
If you answered yes to more than one of those questions chances are you will get some enjoyment from this movie as long you enjoy absurdist comedy and Kevin Smith style dialogue and philosophizing.
And while Mallrats covers all of the above questions there are obviously no firm answers but there is great exchange between comic book legend Stan Lee and Brodie (Jason Lee's character) that suggests that no matter how big your dreams are life still comes back to the basics: finding someone to love and being true to who you are Brodie seems to have a fascination with how "big" certain Superheros are that implies that he's got major insecurity issues...and all Lee can say is don't worry how "big" those heroes are...just be "big" enough to go after the things that really matter.
A crazy cocktail of social satire, Jedi Mind tricks, love for Batman, and how guys really are jerks to their women and need to wake up...Mallrats is a rewarding film with many layers to consider.
So next time you hit the Mall take some time to consider where you are in life and if you're really happy with where you are while browsing the latest video games, fitted ball caps, big clothing sales, or chowing down at the food court.

Well Made Cautionary Tale

I missed this film in the 90's but the Hughes Brothers have made a memorable film on the vicious cycle of gang violence affecting low income neighborhoods in Los Angeles.
Performances are solid and heartfelt and while some aspects might feel a little dated in terms of fashion the movie takes you into the heart of the neighborhoods that to this day, 24 years later, are struggling with same issues of poverty, drug addiction, and gang violence.
Along with Boyz N The Hood, Menace II Society is an important film because of it's unflinching portrayal of the toll and horror of gang violence and neglect that our most vulnerable neighborhoods still face and that we all pay the price for each day the struggle continues because that's one more day that a child is forced to grow up under such dire conditions and potentially turn to crime as a solution.
The movie at the very least encourages conversation and dialogue about where our country stands in regards to the most pressing issues affecting our urban population almost 25 years later.

Intimate Yet Intense Survival Thriller

Doug Liman (director of The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow) shapes a script by Dwain Worrell into an unconventional war film that is basically once solider against another. Set against the backdrop of the Iraq War circa 2007, The Wall, focuses on two expert snipers from both sides and takes you deep into the psychology of what it means to be pinned down with no where left to turn but wit, limited resources, training, and survival instincts, The movie is well acted all around and Aaron-Taylor Johnson gives a raw physical portrayal of an American solider stuck in the desert heat and in the line of fire. Even though the film is light on big action sequences The Wall has a ticking clock urgency that keeps you on the edge of your seat and is given first class treatment by a first class director who knows how to push the action/thriller genre and surprise you while keeping you invested in the characters.
Shot on 16mm film the Blu Ray looks fantastic and preserves the sun scorched, desert feel while maintaining sharp details while the lossless DTS-HD soundtrack delivers precise dialogue which is key along with well placed and occasionally hard hitting sound effects.
Highly recommended for Doug Liman fans and thriller enthusiasts looking for something different.

Essential Superhero Movie and Blu Ray
on September 14, 2016

Here is the first thing that needs to be understood about Batman V Superman (BVS): it is not a feel good super hero movie for kids, rather it is a movie that is basically rated R, in fact the director's/ultimate cut is rated R, and is a movie that explores the dark and dangerous side of having "super heroes" exist on Earth.
The second thing that needs to be understood is that BVS received disastrous reviews when it was released in theaters and mostly because critics felt the movie "took itself too seriously." So if you are going to give this movie a chance I ask that you put everything you heard aside and make up your own mind. As a helpful measure to understand if you'll even like this movie try to remember if you enjoyed Man of Steel, if you did then think of this movie as Man of Steel 2 mixed in with The Dark Knight and you've got a good idea of the serious tone and weighty, mature themes that the film will deal with.
The third things that has to be understood is that if you missed the theatrical release of this movie but are still on the fence about seeing it then it's best you watch the Director's/Ultimate cut of the movie that fleshes out what was already a solid story and connects the dots of the plot more precisely, most specifically in regards to Lex Luthor's devious plan.
I look at BVS as the super hero movie that a lot of grown up comic book/and even action fans have been waiting for that deals with tough subjects ranging from the nature of God, the nature of having power (superhuman and human/scientific/technological), to what true justice means, to what the obligations of individual citizens are to uphold the law and protect basic human values.
You have to realize that Super Heroes are great metaphors for all our fantasies, desires, and the best and worst aspects of who we are as humans.
This movie is a celebration of the power of comic books to help us look inward and examine exactly who we are and what we stand for.
And don't get me wrong there is plenty of action and the Blu Ray is a blast with a first class audio and video that will give your home theater a workout but this movie is best enjoyed when you are not comparing it with other movies (Marvel specifically) and just let it play out as it's own story.
So for serious comic book fans and action movie fans and those looking for something different in a super hero film, I encourage you to add BVS to your collection, especially for the Ultimate Cut.
This isn't cheap DC Universe World Building, this is a stand alone movie about the price of having Superman existing on Earth.
So it is a sequel to Man of Steel but also the introduction to arguably the best Batman on film.
Oh and Wonder Woman is truly ready to win the hearts of cinema goers world wide. She's one of the classic superheros finally brought to life on the big screen and she stands strong besides Batman and Superman.
I've watched this movie several times and it gets better with each viewing because it has a lot of heart and a lot to say.
It's richly packed with big themes, great action, strong performances, and will reward patient views who like their movies to take chances once in a while to say something.

Well Deserved Best Picture Oscar About Newspapers
on September 14, 2016
Posted by: BBCincy
Verified Purchase:Yes
Spotlight is a much smaller movie compared to many of the big costume dramas and historical epics that are released around Oscar season starting in October that compete for the Best Picture statue.
That's not to say that period movies and costume dramas don't have their place but this movie was positively refreshing.
There were no big, loud scene stealing performances and no big orchestral scores or moments that tugged at your heartstrings. Spotlight simply presented the working life of investigative reporters that usually remain in the shadows of print journalism because all we really see as average citizens is the end result and not all the work that goes into bringing a story to the public.
The focus of the investigation is disturbing and may not to be appropriate for those under 17 (the movie is Rated R) as it has to do with the child abuse scandal that shook the Catholic Church to it's foundations in the early 2000's.
And as important as the story is, as critical as it was to reveal the truth about what went on and to bring the issue to the public so justice could be served and the voices of the abused would no longer have to remain silent, the movie could have been about any important case that needed to be brought to the public's attention.
That's the beauty of the film. It's universal message is that the search for truth is one of the most important duties of any true journalist and is also what functional societies should be built on: the consistent demand for truth and accountability so no crime or wrong doing does unnoticed, no matter how small or powerful the perpetrator is.
So whether it's the Flint water crisis or investigations into our Presidential candidates or the recent stories about police abuse and use of force or the even the Heroin epidemic that claims thousands of lives every year, Spotlight brings much needed attention to the fact that journalists are one of the key protectors of our democratic values because they seek the truth and see it as their duty to bring it to our attention.
So whether you appreciate movies about true stories or want to understand more about how print journalism work (this movie ranks among the best on the subject up there with All The President's Men) or like intelligent movies that are understated but well crafted then you will like this movie.
The audio and visuals are solid on blu ray and dvd and the package comes at good deal with an HD digital copy to watch the movie on the go on your portable devices.
So if you missed Spotlight in theaters and like award season movies do yourself a favor and watch this great film.
It's a tough subject but you will walk away knowing a little more about how our modern world works and may even look at your newspaper and what they do a little differently.

A Stunning Achivement of Physical Filmmaking
on September 12, 2016

Here is the bottom line: I saw this movie in IMAX and found it physically tough to experience because of how intense the climbing sequences are and because the entire story is true. So I picked this up on blu ray and I can assure you that if you have a big TV and nice speakers and appreciate what some people will do to get closer to nature and come to terms with the their mortality and find out what it means to be alive then this movie is for you.
Excellent performances and direction. First class audio and video on disc.
Again, you have to appreciate true stories and movies about survival and be willing to see the harsh side of nature to get anything out of this movie.
And yeah, maybe dress warm for this. The cold will grab you through screen and that wind blowing through the speakers will chill you to the bone.
What a great HD Blu Ray experience. So turn the lights out and the volume way up.

An essential classic gets a huge A/V boost

Many books, articles, reviews, and essays have been posted or published about Goodfellas that all confirm one big thing: it's an absolute classic of modern cinema and one of the top 10 gangster movies ever made.
Released many times on home video from VHS, to DVD, to special edition DVDs and blu-rays, The Goodfellas 25th anniversary edition finally brings us much closer to the way the film was meant to be seen and heard.
Remastered from 35mm celluloid film source elements with supervision by director Martin Scorsese, the new version was scanned in 4k to bring tremendous amounts of new details to the digital realm then re-colored to match the original release and in addition had the sound re-mixed and upgraded to lossless DTS-HD surround sound.
All this was done to pull you in closer to the world of Henry Hill, Tommy D, and Jimmy The Gent.
Many of you who purchased Goodfellas on blu-ray years ago many already be happy with the way the movie looks and sounds but that version released in 2007 lacked HD sound and had technical issues with the video that limited the true colors and details of the image from being seen.
This new version not only makes the image pop even more with better, natural colors and details and textures but it feels more like a movie shot on 35mm film should look. The best way to describe it is it feels like stepping back and seeing the movie being projected on 35mm but with the convenience of being on a digital HD disc.
For those with big sound systems the lossless DTS-HD remastered track definitely puts your investment to good use by bringing to life lots more detail and clarity to the dialogue, classic music tracks, and expressionistic sound design and effects. Now all the scenes feel much bigger and again pull you closer to the world of Goodfellas.
If you're a fan of the movie, do yourself a favor and pick up this classic that has been remastered with love and care and is priced very, very well!

Great deal on underrated but important Bourne film
on August 20, 2016
Posted by: BBCincy
Verified Purchase:Yes
The Bourne Legacy has been misunderstood since day one. It was not meant to reboot or replace Matt Damon's Jason Bourne, it was actually doing 2 things instead: buying time for Matt Damon to return while also expanding the Bourne world for additional characters to emerge.
Taking place before, during, and after the events of Bourne Ultimatum, Legacy presents an eerie and even more disturbing premise: what if there are many more illegal black ops programs being run beyond just the one Bourne was trying to stop (Blackbriar) that the public as well as Bourne don't even know about. And what if these programs were taking human conditioning to the next level by not only "brainwashing" the assassins but enhancing them using cellular and gene therapy to boost their strength, speed, endurance, and cognitive skills.
This many seem far-fetched now but this is exactly what is being researched as we speak. Tony Gilroy the director in fact confirms in the commentary that he consulted with a respected scientist/researcher about soldiers using gene/cellular therapy and the scientist confirmed that it is only a matter of time till this is put into practice in reality.
If you can get past the "viral boost" aspect (which is treated well) then the movie is a solid action film with uniformly good performances, smart plotting, and essential Bourne elements including daring escapes, conspiracies, shadowy back room deals, car chases, and hand to hand combat.
Plus it casts an ominous pall over the entire series when you realize that Bourne is "only the tip of the iceberg" and that there are many more "super assassins" out there doing the government's dirty work.
Lastly, if you haven't seen Jason Bourne (Bourne 5, 2016), I recommending watching the original trilogy plus Legacy to get the complete backstory.
The blu ray presentation is top notch with a high quality 1080p visuals and lossless DTS-HD sound plus informative extras and digital copies (UV and iTunes) so you can watch the movie on the go.
If you're a Bourne fan grab Bourne Legacy at this great price!
