In 2004 a little road trip dramedy called Sideways created a surge in popularity for California Wine Country and gained an Oscar for best adapted screenplay. The acting across the board is tremendous and the dialogue is truly memorable and quotable. If you have not seen Sideways in HD you are in for a treat because it looks fantastic with lots of pop and saturated color bring all the vineyards to your living room. Plus the lossless soundtrack brings you closer to the music and dialogue so you can hear every zinger of a line delivered by either Miles, Jack, Maya, Stephanie, or anyone from this classic ensemble. Sideways, now, 14 years old, has definitely cemented itself as one of the finest road trip comedy dramas of all time. It has laughs, beautiful locations and music, and plenty of heart.

Accurate and Responive for iMac

I purchased this mouse when the Apple trackpad broke down after years of use. I wasn’t ready to drop $150 on a new trackpad so I needed a quick solution.
I visited the local Best Buy and was told by a helpful member of the computer department that this Logitech mouse would basically take care of all the browsing, navigating, and scrolling as needs and would operate without issue with a Mac and he was right.
Even on a mouse pad that’s a little bit rough and over a decade old the mouse is quick, accurate, and very responsive and produces a satisfying clicking sound with a metallic edge that lets you know that you are highlighting and pinpointing whatever you need to and that you can click with confidence and there is no lag whatsoever. The pre-installed battery should be good for a year before replacement is needed and this is Wireless USB based.
I definitely recommend this mouse for those who do not need a trackpad right away for their Mac and just something simple and accurate to navigate with.

30th Anniversary of a Comedy Classic

Before we got the glamorous remake of the Ocean’s Eleven movie there was another con artist movie that truly won your heart for how charming and clever it was. This movie features brilliant performances from Michael Caine, Steve Martin, and Glenne Headly.
I am a huge Steve Martin and Caine fan and cannot believe that I missed this movie but it was a pleasure to watch it on its 30th Anniversary.
I don’t want to give away any plot spoilers especially since this is a con artist film but I highly recommend Dirty Rotten Scoundrels especially if you’re looking for something funny with an old-school charm that mixes comedy of manners and very clever writing and brilliant acting all around.
The Blu-ray looks terrific and the images or costal Europe shine in high definition while the lossless soundtrack gives you the full feel of the soundtrack as well as clearly delivering all the superb dialogue and writing.
It’s a great time altogether and should be available at a bargain price.

What happens when you take the director of such movies as the Bourne Identity and Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow and give him the ability to make his own version of Goodfellas? You pretty much gets American Made which is the true story of professional pilot Barry Seal and his adventures working for both the CIA and Pablo Escobar during the 1980s when America was heavily embedded In South America and its efforts to fight the war on drugs and the thwart the spread of communism.
Barry seal is truly a fascinating character and director Doug Liman allows Tom Cruise to truly shine and give an electrifying performance.
The movie is shot documentary style to make you feel like you were truly in the heat of the jungle or in the cockpit of a plane dodging bullets.
This is definitely an edge of your seat thriller which has humor and heart and also once in a while makes you scratch your head as to how so much of our history has been swept under the rug in regards to South America.
But don’t let the politics get in your way because this is a movie about Barry Seal and how he tried to get filthy rich by just being the best pilot in the sky and doing what he did best while also taking care of his family and hometown.
Filmed in a gritty, hand-held, verite style the 4K image is absolutely amazing in how it pushes the colors to make you feel the sweltering heat of the jungles and the the saturated blues and greens of the Louisiana Gulf Coast as Barry flies drugs into the United States.
The lossless sound is explosive and you can feel all the impact from bullets tearing into Barry’s plane to a Barry crash landing to dodge the coast guard. And the often humorous dialogue is crystal clear.
Highly recommended for fans of historical thrillers and those who are Tom Cruise and Doug Liman fans.

New Jack City can definitely be considered a classic in the gangster genre from the 80s and early 90s together with such films as Carlito’s Way and even the Untouchables.
Like those movies it is heavily stylized but when it really gets to the heart of depicting the dangers and allure of the drug trade and how it affects both the innocent and even destroys those who exploit the trade from the inside the movie really stands out.

The subtext is also about urban decay and neglect and how the war on drugs, now 30 years later, still rages on. But New Jack City does not glorify being the head King pin of a drug empire even though some may argue that it does glamorize certain aspects of being wealthy and living on drug money.
Ultimately for casual movie viewers though the movie is a dramatic thriller and has well staged action scenes and moves at a very quick pace so you won’t be bored and the movie does not attempt
to preach either so you can take from it what you will in terms of the social aspects.

The image really pops in high definition on the Blu-ray and the lossless soundtrack does pull you into the forbidden world of cops and gangsters from the late 80s early 90s New York which was one of the worst places in the world when the streets were under siege by the drug trade.

The great thing about The Prestige is that the first time you watch the movie it completely messes with your mind. But what truly makes it a modern classic is that it’s highly re-watchable. There are so many layers to this movie but ultimately I feel it’s about obsession and how certain driven individuals place their pursuit of making history and claiming greatness over dedicating themselves to their family and the ones they love. And ultimately that comes at a very heavy cost. But if you do not want to get that deep with the film it’s a viscerally thrilling ride all the way through and nicely blends authentic magic with a touch of science fiction to further heighten the sense of being in a forbidden world where tragedy, magic, revenge, and obsession intersect.
The 4K image is glorious in revealing richer colors and really fine details that the Blu-ray cannot match and the lossless sound definitely pulls you into the world of early 20th century London as well as Nikolai Teslas hidden laboratory in Colorado.
Highly recommended for Nolan fans and those who enjoy mindbending, psychological dramas.

A True Story from a Master Filmmaker

Dunkirk is divided into 3 sections: the fight in the air pitting British Royal Air Force fighters against enemy planes, the survival of British soldiers on the shore of Dunkirk in France, and the rescue of the soldiers by British private citizens using day to day pleasure boats who have to cross the English Channel and face the potential of being struck by torpedoes or enemy planes.
On the surface this may sound like the movie would take 3 hours but Christopher Nolan, as if assembling a fine tuned clock, weaves through the 3 stories in less than 2 hours and literally keeps you on edge of your seat.
For the duration of the film you feel like you are on the beach with the soldiers, in the cockpit of a fighter plane, and on a pleasure boat called the Moonstone on it's way to Dunkirk.
This is movie is really unlike any other war movie I have seen or any war movie in recent history because it's less about actual combat and more about an historical rescue operation where literally every hour counts before almost 300 Thousand allied soldiers face certain death.
Visuals and audio on the Blu Ray are first class but the 4K benefits from HDR for richer colors. The 5.1 lossless mix is the same and totally immersive.
If you are a Nolan fan, war history buff, or enjoy well made, thrilling films based on true stories I highly, highly recommend Dunkirk.

10th Anniversary of an Underrated Bond Film

Quantum is so different from Casino Royale that fans didn't know what to make of it. It's a faster, tougher, grittier Bond film and about 30 minutes shorter than Casino. In some ways it's an extension of Casino as it picks up right after that movie but it definitely has it's own style and sense of purpose. In many ways this is a darker more emotional Bond film in that it deals with love and loss and revenge. Bond is drunk with rage and heartache and uses that pain to go after the bad guys. It's a brave film in that it didn't want to give fans more of the same and is worth the price of admission for just the first 20 minutes where you see an edge of your seat car chase and then a foot chase where Bond hunts down a double agent on the rooftops of Siena, Italy that culminates in one of the most inventive gun fights in action movie history where, let's just say, Bond loses his sidearm and only has seconds left to live. I would say Quantum, now it's in 10th Anniversary, really deserves a second chance and no longer has to be overshadowed by either Casino Royale or Skyfall. It's aged well and has it's own style, identity, and purpose in telling a modern Bond film that's about combining the action and thrills fans demand while also taking some risks in showing Bond as a wounded and vulnerable killer who is paying the price for his decisions and actions while also coming to terms with his role as an agent for preserving justice and serving his country. In addition Quantum looks and sounds fantastic on blu ray with reference quality audio and video.

Released in 1992 Batman Returns showed Tim Burton tapping into the deepest, darkest corners of his imagination and transposing them onto the world of Batman. Is the movie bleak and at times nightmarish? Yes. Is it for kids? No. I would say it definitely is a hard PG-13 in the way the new Dark Knight trilogy is more oriented toward mature audience members. But in many ways it represents the purest comic book adaptation put to screen in that it celebrates the alternate reality that Batman lives in and makes it feel like a world that is deeply troubled and scary and needs heroes like Batman to help bring law and order to society. Danny DeVito is the definitive Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer owns the role of Catwoman. The blu ray looks and sounds fantastic and preserves the twisted, grotesque vision of Gotham that was seen in the theatrical exhibition and is accompanied by a meaningful set of extra features. Highly Recommended for all Batman and comic book movie fans!

Essential Collection for DIE HARD Fans

Let's be clear...Die Hard 1-3 form a loose trilogy when McClane still had hair and when Die Hard was at the peak of pop culture. Parts 4 and 5 however are a treat for fans to see a different take on John McClane in how he not only adapts to the internet/digital age but how he reconciles his lone wolf personality and his relationship with his kids. Live Free Or Die Hard is well made and quite scary in how it shows digital terrorists taking over the East Coast but A Good Day to Die Hard is more about John coming to terms with the fact that he's basically a superhero but is nothing without his unwavering sense of justice but more importantly his love for his family. Part 5 is definitely uneven and for many it's considered the worst of the series but this box set gave me the chance to revisit it and put bias aside and it turned out to have more depth than I expected. I'm under no illusion that the film is tongue and cheek and mostly and excuse to see McClane kick bad guy butt but it's also a kind of commentary on the whole series and how McClane really is, at the end of the day, a man looking to do right by his family. The last shot in the movie is a nice moment that is a heartfelt cap to the series if they decide not to make a part 6. Audio and Visual is strong throughout and this blu ray set is the best way to see the series on your home theater.
