Featuring a unique visual style, impressively gruesome deaths, and some disturbing imagery, it's easy to see why "Suspiria" has been so influential over the years. This DVD's A/V presentation is rather lacking, however, and anyone looking to buy should consider waiting for the 4K restoration (happening now), and a definitive release on Blu-ray.
Seeing "magic" performed in modern films is often a source of frustration. Given the current preoccupation with CG, there's never any sense that what you're seeing onscreen is anything more than special effects. Thus, the craftsmanship required for sleight-of-hand is unnecessary, and the spectacle that's left is empty: a feat performed by animators unbound by the laws of physics. "Now You See Me" is just such an example. The film itself has some amusing bits, but in the end it's nothing more than empty spectacle.
The debut English-language film from renowned French filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz, Gothika is a supernatural thriller starring Academy Award winner Halle Berry as a woman struggling to keep her grip on reality when she suddenly goes from psychiatrist to asylum inmate. Along for the eerie festivities are Penelope Cruz and Robert Downey Jr. The film has been given a widescreen transfer for this DVD, with the original soundtrack mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. An optional French-dubbed Dolby Digital 5.1 track is also included, as are subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. Along with the film, the disc provides insight into the production with a feature-length audio commentary track by Kassovitz. Additionally, the trailer is included, and fans of the film's music will be pleased to find the Berry-starring video for Limp Bizkit's cover of "Behind Blue Eyes." A full-screen version with identical features was released simultaneously.
Slightly above average film with good set pieces (a haunted asylum) and a great cast. The scares and story are largely predictable, but won't insult your intelligence. Worth a look.
Part of Chan Wook Park's "Vengeance" trilogy, "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" is haunting and effective. It thoughtfully examines the concepts of justice, revenge, and forgiveness. Not for the faint of heart.
I found the trailer to be intriguing and really looked forward to seeing the film itself. It appeared to be unique and fresh, with much attention paid to the science of the story. Unfortunately, the film rather devolves into what's become typical for "found footage" movies, and ultimately has little that's truly new to offer.
Without getting too far into spoiler territory, this film is about loyalty. It's a bleak tale, but not without some humor. The performances are excellent, and the story is captivating. Highly recommended!
A hilarious take on what it means to be an adult, yet steeped in vulgarity and gross-out humor. Nice picture, and sound -- listening to the rave portions at high volume will likely test the patience of your own neighbors! Worth a watch.
Easily one of Jim Jarmusch's best films, "Only Lovers Left Alive" presents vampires as you've never seen them before. Mournful observers over the march of time, immortality seems a thing to be endured as they are forced to watch the inevitable decay of all that they love. Wonderfully crafted, deliberately paced, and deftly acted.
Based on a French series of comic books, "The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc Sec" is tremendous good fun! Besting the source material (which is itself quite good), the film is popping with imagination, and maintains a deft balance of humor and action. Though some images (such as the resurrected mummies) might frighten young children, it's highly recommended for family viewing!
Filmed against gorgeous Mediterranean backdrops, "Purple Noon" tells the chilling story of Tom Ripley. Twists and turns abound throughout this suspense-filled film. Recommended!
