Gov't Mule were a throwback side project for Warren Hayes that morphed into a full blown band. The idea was to explore the power trio format, popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s but out of favor largely since. These are the first 'demos' from 1994 - before the band really had time to road test the material, and they are sharper and harder than the album versions that later appeared. The drumming in particular is more aggressive, although the mix is loud and proud over all. An excellent look into the true 'birth of the mule'.

Small Town America Done Big

This is an intimate film with a big cast, with some big name supporting players. Whoppie Goldberg gets her best role in decades and Jenna Elfman plays the town eccentric to perfection. The plot is long and complex, and the people change as the movie progresses. The cast keeps growing until you feel like you know half of the people of Big Stone Gap as friends. I have not read the book, but this movie, while primarily a comedy, also has many dramatic moments, especially towards the end. A great movie for the entire family and a great look at small town America, both the good and the not-so-good.

Equal to the British Films

"Paul' seems to have flown slightly under the radar, but I consider this film about equal to 'Shawn of the Dead', 'Hot Fuzz', and 'The World's End'. Perhaps the editing and direction aren't quite as good, but the special effects are perfect and the plot is hilarious. Once again, Simon Pegg and company take a genre and hit all the important high points while subverting it simultaneously. The supporting players, especially Kristen Wiig, are perfect. It all comes to a wacky ending with more than a few surprises while incorporating some American "Apatow' humor via Seth Rogan. A personal favorite and an excellent comedy movie.

The unique stage was supposed to make this a concert about new technology, similar to 'The Claw' on the last tour, and it is impressive. Watching the band interact with the screen was pretty trippy. The camera work was excellent and the sound immersive.
But events conspired to make this the most political and emotional U2 concert in decades. Giving the stage over to another band at the end for two songs - The Eagles of Death Metal, whom I had never heard before and who didn't seem particularly death metal either but were enjoyable - took a lot of stones. they were the band whose concert had been bombed by terrorist just months before.
Some nice bonus features on this disc, including videos and alternate versions of songs from other nights with
Hats off to U2 for a concert that put tears in my eyes. Bravo!

Every movie director manipulated their audience - it is a contract we sign when we agree to watch a movie. Michael Moore has a reputation as an opinionated documentary maker, but this movie was surprisingly funny and informative. Not as one sided as expected, or even anti-American, this should be seen by more than the faithful. Who knows, you might even learn something.

An existential action film like they only made them way back when, "Vanishing Point" is nearly all movement. Towards what goal is not exactly clear. I love this film and it is a giant cult item for good reason. Well shot and directed, with some interesting actors doing different stuff, it makes you think while raising your adrenaline level.

Carlos Santana is always worth a listen, but to an old school guy like myself some of his recent albums have sounded to "American Idol' for my tastes, Getting as much of the original band back together certainly helps things along wonderfully, with Greg Rolle's vocals and keyboards skills especially evident. The album goes from very commercial work to flat out jams, and the variety helps as well.
